stringmun1
I just replaced a quad of Sovtek 6550's with a quad of RCA Blackplate 6L6 manufactured in the 13th week of 1960. Got 'em on eBay for $122.00. All test circa 85%. I think the sound quality is much more open. Perhaps a slight drop in bass response as compared to the 6550...but not much. Definitely a more accurate midrange and a more open top end. Hal
paully
I can't tell you that definitively. I have never spent any serious time with the 6550. Only really know the EL34 family which I liked but I have to admit that I am moving a completely different direction and heading toward single ended. I would say that that would be a good post to search for in the archives at http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/bbs.html where there should be a wealth of information on what you are looking for. Of course the only way to know.... But from what I heard of the JJ KT-77, it was one of the most eloquent tubes I have ever heard.
