  1. I am currently using the Sumiko Blackbird high-output MC with my Linn LP12/Ittok LV-II.
  2. Been considering upgrading my LP12 tonearm cable as well...what cables are you considering?
  3. I was (re)watching my Beach Boys documentary DVD last nite...Carl Wilson said..."...by virtue of the fact that he played no instrument...Dennis became the drummer..."
  4. Isolation!!!! In my recording studio, I use modified Office Isolation Panels....ie....we cut rectangular openings and inserted plexiglass...so that the drummer can see! Does wonders in the realm of recording.
  5. I like my Bag End Infra18 with my Heresy HT setup.
  6. Hey Tarheel... I have tried different tubes. I replaced the stock Tesla EL-34's with Sovtek 6550's for a few hundred hours...now using a matched quad of RCA blackplate 6L6's (all manufactured in the 13th week of 1960). The 6L6's blow away all the others I've tried thus far. But I think the most audible difference in the amps was when I replaced the stock Ei 12DW7's with Telefunken 7247's. I recently totally retubed the pre as well....now using an Amperex Bugle Boy (treble clef) 5AR4...2 Sylvania 12FQ7's...2 Telefunken 12AX7's, and a Telefunken 12AU7. Big difference! Hal
  7. I didn't think we were supposed to talk about that sorta' stuff on here! Hal
  8. I've had a great experience using the Quicksilver Horn Monos with my Heresy pair. I use the Quicksilver Full-Function preamp as well. Hal
  9. I use a Jolida 202A to power my surrounds...formerly to power my Heresy pair. I am still using the stock Chinese EL-34's (tried a quad of EH EL-34's...one of 'em failed after about 100 hours). I noticed more of an improvement after replacing the stock driver tubes (ie,12AT7's and 12AX7's) with NOS Telefunkens and RCA's. Hal
  10. I use Furman Power conditioning/distribution products....no complaints....one of mine has 3 sequentially-engaging outlet groups. Hal
  11. I haven't tried the Mullard 5AR4, but I recently installed a NIB 1964 Amperex Bugle Boy (treble clef) in my Quicksilver Full-Function preamp with marvelous results. Hal
  12. Many moons ago...circa 1980, my roomate at the the time, and I shared a grand old mansion that had belonged to his Aunt. It had a huge living room with chandelier and marble fireplace. We removed the space heater from the fireplace and inserted my Heresy pair. Used his LaScalas for Mains. It was great! Hal
  13. Hi Pete. I was a Sophomore in college 1n '76....my roomate had a pair of the Decorator's model Heresy (you know...no grille). I fell in love with 'em and had to buy a pair. I had worked in the oilfield the previous summer between semesters and saved enough $$ to buy the Heresy pair, a newly introduced Kenwood KA9100 integrated amp, and a Technics SL2000 TT. Been hooked ever since. Hal
  14. Islander...I agree. I've always thought that it's better to overheat the voicecoils slightly via too much power than to send square waves from a clipped SS amp to shred the diaphragms. Hal
  15. Hey Chuck. Sorry for the delayed response. I retubed the preamp with the Quicksilver replacement set of tubes just after I bought it about a year ago. Then I recently put together a premium (IMO) set of tubes from various sources (Tejas Tubes, Brent Jesse Recording, and eBay). A noticable difference to my ears. The 5AR4 I bought from Brent Jesse Recording was a 1964 NOS Amperex Bugle Boy Treble Clef. Hal
  16. I bought my Heresy pair new in 1976. After listening to SS for decades, I switched to a pair of Quicksilver Horn Mono amps and a Quicksilver Full-Function preamp about a year ago. I definitely prefer the tubes over SS. And should I desire more from the bass region, I blend in my Bag End Infra18 sub. Marvelous!!! Hal
  17. You might try Durham's in LR. Their number is 501-224-2349. They service McIntosh gear. Hal
  18. I just replaced a quad of Sovtek 6550's with a quad of RCA Blackplate 6L6 manufactured in the 13th week of 1960. Got 'em on eBay for $122.00. All test circa 85%. I think the sound quality is much more open. Perhaps a slight drop in bass response as compared to the 6550...but not much. Definitely a more accurate midrange and a more open top end. Hal
  19. Hey Chuck, I replaced Sovtek 6550's with the RCA 6L6's. Used em' for about 8 months. A friend of mine who repairs Hammond organs gave em' to me. I thought the 6550's showed a great improvement in the bass region with perhaps a little sacrifice of the upper mid and high end. But I think the MOST NOTICABLE change was when I replaced the stock Ei 7247's with Telefunken 7247's. Hal
  20. An update to my 2006 Quicksilver posting... Have listened regularly to my Quicksilver Full-Function Preamp/Horn Mono pair (pushing my '76 Heresey pair) for about 10 months now. WOW!!! I recently retubed all three pieces. Pre: NOS Amperex Bugle Boy (treble clef) 5AR4, (2) NOS 12FQ7's (no logos), smooth-plate Telefunken 12AX7 (phono section), smooth-plate Telefunken 12AU7 and ribbed-plate Telefunken 12AX7 (line section). Amps: Telefunken 7247's and 1960 RCA blackplate 6L6's. WOW!!! Hal
  21. I just installed a matched quad of RCA 6L6 Blackplates (manuf 13th week of 1960) in my Horn Monos. Had already replaced the Ei 7247's with Telefunkens. Incredible difference over the stock stuff. Hal
  22. I have the Horn Monos driving my 1976 Heresy pair. Just a few nights ago I replaced the stock Ei 12DW7s with a newly acquired pair of Telefunken 7247s. I'm currently using Sovtek 6550s as well. The Teles made a HUGE difference in soundstage and definition. I am anxious to try other power tubes as well. However, I believe that a noticable difference can be achieved by replacing the stock Eis with higher quality tubes. Stringmun1
  23. I have an IMMACULATE McIntosh C-28 for sale. I've been using it in conjunction with a Mac 2505 (among several other Macs) for several years. Just switched to Quicksilver electronics and am therefore desiring to sell some Mac (I own 13 pieces). Lemme know if interested...I'd take $500. Located in Warren, AR.
