  1. So, I figured I'd post this here on this thread...from my FB post in the Klipsch Fanatics group.

I finally got the living room to the point where I could put together some of the system and compare the CF-4 v3's to the KLF-30's. Each pair were connected to a Yamaha MX-800u amp, running off the speaker A output. They are 170w RMS / 270w peak, per channel, driven from a Yamaha RX-A2050.

Overall, I have to pick the CF-4's for 2-channel use, if you can only have one pair. The CF-4's have more low bass where the KLF's seemed to be a little tighter, but didn't go as low. The CF-4's also had more in the lower mid range and more at the very top from what I heard. The KLF-30's had more in the midrange, were more vocal, but not as bright on the very top.

The KLF-30's will make an excellent center channel speaker in my HT setup though, once I get to that in this house. I will say that having both pairs running at once sounds FANTASTIC. The two models complement each other very well.

BTW, I'm still on the hunt for a third pair of CF3 v1's. The next theater setup I do will have a CF3 center. So if anyone wants my CF4 v3's, I'd love make a trade.

So you're looking for some CF3 v1's and want to trade off some CF4 v3's.  I've got a pair of CF4 v3's now and would love another set.  Where are you located?

And there is no better person than @JRH to review your work, give guidance and help spot any errors.

His forte is the company and products when Paul owned the company, but he continued to be the company Historian until he retired a year ago.

Please be prepared, a lot of valuable digital information was lost when they made a change of some sort and so some things are lost forever.  However, he has personal knowledge of many, many products either because he was directly involved in the development and engineering, or he was in charge of the people who were.

I suggested a post in Museum section,, Ask The Historian, because that is really the only area he visits on here.

That sounds great too.  Did your @JRH tag him or something, or does someone need make him aware of this thread and his requested brilliance on the subject?

I like your project.  I just sent you a Heritage prices spreadsheet and a Word document.  Maybe we can find some way to combine info into one spreadsheet using different sheets.

Edit:  I've been looking at your spreadsheet.  There is some more technical info I think should be included.  For instance you have HF size, that should have more detail and list the drivers.  The Khorn uses the K-77 compression driver, a K-55v (for instance) mid driver and I think a K-33 or K-43 woofer.  We should note the models and sizes.

Also, the Khorn was a model for 70 years.  We could sub-divide it into eras, such as Type A XO, Type AA,  Type AK, AK-2. etc.  It's a whole project just documenting the Khorn.

And if we really want to get fancy, we could also include sales brochures and pics. (CF-4)

Love the brochure pic you chose (CF-4's, which I have).  :)  All great idea...see, I knew you guys would be able to suggest how to make it better.

Did you have a chance to look at the links that @wvu80 posted above?   I'm not sure  if the answers are in there, but I think it would give you a head start.

Yes, but that group only focuses on the Epic line, made for 3 years.  I'm still looking for a list of all the lines Klipsch has made over the years, when they were built, basic specs, etc.  When I see a set of KG3.5's, it would be nice to be able to look up what the specs of them were, when they were build and what was build before/after them, all in one place.

    What are those?

    Just kidding.

That stuff is pretty easy to look up, here is info on CF-4 for example.

I'm not aware of anyone doing a combined timeline that includes multiple lines, but someone else may have seen something posted on here.

I was thinking something more like:

    1994-1996:  Epic CF-1, CF-2, CF-3, CF-4; KV-1,KV-2, KV-3, KV-4

    1996 - 200?:  Legend  KLF-10, KLF-20, KLF-30

    ???? -????:  KG-3, KG-3.5

And then some specs like 2-way/3-way, what horns, woofers, woofer size and quantity, etc.

  7. Nice looking setup.  There's a guy on Ebay trying to sell a KV-4 in Snohomish right now, if you're looking for one of those.  He's a bit high on the price IMO, but it's for sale and close to you.

I have a pair of the CF-4's as well.  Currently have an old Infinity Video 1 center that doesn't do justice.  I've been watching for a KV-4 for a long time, but none come up in what I'm willing to pay.

How do you think the CF-3 compares to a KV-4?  How about dual CF-3's as centers?  My Yamaha DSP-A1 has dual center outputs and there's a pair of CF3 V2 or V3's locally that I could pick up.

  8. Well, I'm happy with how they sound, just want to put both my amps to use. If I go with an active crossover, I can still cross it at the same point they are crossed at stock, right? Should sound the same, just easier for the amp to give them what they want.

Oh, and a sub isn't an issue. My Yamaha processor has a sub-out which goes to a Crown CE2000 powering a Resonant Engineering XXX 15. :)

  9. I currently have my CF-4's bi-wired and want to go to a true bi-amp setup. This will require an active crossover to do so. Can anyone make a recommendation/suggestion on what is decent out there. Not looking to spend a fortune, but want to put both of my amps to good use. :)

    Thanks!

  10. So are you saying that this setup is not pushing 170w to each cabinets hi freq and 170w to each cabinets low freq? I don't understand that, please explain. If I turn the low amp off or turn that channel down, that cabinet loses all sound. It would seem to me that if they are independent enough that turning off one amp stops all sound from the drivers which they are connected, and the other amp and drivers can be running independently, then how can you not have the sum of the power going to the cabinet?

    OK, I'm lost. 14.gif

  11. Thanks Ray...I did pull it out last night. Nothing loose. Pushing on the cone, I can't feel anything rub (like a voice coil binding). The woofer is a K-30-KN, retail of $199.82. OUCH! For now, I have just removed that one speaker and turned the gain up on the amp for the lows in that cabinet. At normal levels, almost can't tell it's gone.

  12. I originally wanted to run them off a single Yamaha MX-1000, but I've been unable to locate one. Those are rated at 270w/channel. The CF-4's were rated for 300w RMS/1200w peak, so I though this would be a good combination. I know my current hookup exceeds that, but it works well.

Yes, I can be in the room with them, but they are very bright. The Yamaha's have level knobs from -infinity back to 0. I run the highs at around -8 to -10, and the lows around -6. Plenty of volume there...especially since this setup is just in my bedroom. :)

  13. They are both rated at 170w RMS, with a dynamic of 255w for the M-65 and 270w for the MX-800. I know that's up there, but I don't have the gains up too much. I think having more power and turning the gains down sounds quite good on these things.

I did run a meter on the inputs, but the readings were way out there...not sure what was going on.

  14. Hello. I have a pair of CF-4's I bought new back in 1996. An outstanding speaker, I've never had to touch them and they sound great. Until recently, I had always powered them off my Yamaha DSP-A1000 with only 80w/channel. I have recently purchased a Yamaha M-65 (which runs the highs) and a Yamaha MX-800 (which runs the lows). They are bi-amped - a nice feature with these speakers. Both amps are rated for 170w/channel with 2.7db headroom at 8ohms.

First, in bi-amp wiring, are the high freq and low freq inputs 4ohm or 8ohm? Second, what kind of power should this setup take? The old specs said 300w continuous, so I'm assuming 300w total, or 150 on the high and 150 on the low. Is that correct.

Also, where can I go to get a replacement K-30-KN woofer driver...I seem to have hurt one last night. It's rattling and buzzy now when playing. :(

    Thanks!
