  1. Today, I was updating some of my bass management settings on my receiver, and I went to this website to quickly recheck the specs on my center, the RC-35. All of a sudden, the model is not listed on the Klipsch website, either under current or classic products. Anyone know why? Could it be that Klipsch is updating promotional information on the speaker? ---------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: RF3II Center: RC35 Surrounds: RS35 Rear: KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD (incredible!) 2. I have a RC35, RF3IIs(predecessor to the 35 series), and the RS35s, and I love the sound. One thing I didn't catch. What type of amplification are you running? To some of us, a number of Klipsch speakers, including this series, have been known to sound "shrill" or excessive "bright" when running at very high volumes with certain amplification. Depending on what amplification you are currently running, that may factor into your overall analysis. However, with warmer amplification, the sound is very, very, very nice!! ------------------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: RF3II Center: RC35 Surrounds: RS35 Rear: KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD Upstairs Yamaha RX-V1300 Mains, Center: Onkyo SKS-HT500 Surrounds: Axiom QS-8 HSU VTF-2
  3. I agree that the performance of this new sub could be still an open question. There are some aethestic differences between the two Hsu subs, and ironically, the STF-2 looks a bit like a smaller version of the SVS PB1-ISD. The port configurations are also probably different between the two. I am also not sure if both Hsu subs use exactly the same 10-inch driver or not. The bottom line is that the VTF-2 is tried and true, and its output capabilities for a sub of that size and driver are fairly well-documented. There are also enough VTF-2 owners out there, like myself, that can personally vouch that it is a fine sub. We will just have to wait until we get some feedback from new STF-2 owners or from others who have demoed the sub.

  6. Frankie, you are correct. The deal at Comp USA is a tremendous bargain for those looking for a sub in that price range. I believe the main differences between the VTF-2 and the STF-2 are essentially two-fold performance-wise. The VTF-2 uses a more traditional vented Class A/B amp rated at 150 watts while the new STF-2 uses a BASH amp, which some describe as a hybrid between a Class A/B and digital amp. The other performance difference is that the VTF-2 is switchable between 25 and 32HZ (32HZ for mainly music), whereas the standard setting for the STF-2 is 25HZ only. The performance of the two models should not be that far off since SVS has used BASH amps with some success! However, I am not sure how long the discounted price will last. There was thread started in the HSU forum the beginning of this week commenting on the discounted Comp USA price, which resulted in a number of upset HSU owners who recently purchased their subs directly from HSU. The latest posting today from a HSU representative indicates that Comp USA is not supposed to be selling the model for a "discount" below HSU's direct price, and HSU has vowed to remedy the situation. -------------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: Klipsch RF3II Center: Klipsch RC35 Surrounds: Klipsch RS35 Rear: Klipsch KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD (incredible!) 7. I think that is an excellent idea. It is not as important to have an ideal match with your rear center as with your front three. I have been using my KLF-C7 as a rear center and even though the speaker does not voice match the reference series, you cannot really tell the difference due to the limited applications of the rear center. ------------------------ Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: Klipsch RF3II Center: Klipsch RC35 Surrounds: Klipsch RS35 Rear: Klipsch KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD Upstairs Yamaha RX-V1300 Mains, Center: Onkyo SKS-HT500 Surrounds: Axiom QS-8 HSU VTF-2
  8. Pistol Pete: I smiled to myself reading this thread because our significant others do not quite understand our fascination with getting things "just right" with our "toys." I demoed a RC3II and a RC35 for about a week on the same system before making a decision so by no means am I any kind of "expert" with respect to both centers. I have, however, listened to RC3IIs and RC35s on other systems, and to my ears, the primary difference is in the "huskier sound" of the RC35 (due to the front ports),primarily for dialogue. All of that being said, easylistener is right. The only way to tell for yourself is to order a RC3II and then listen to both centers with your system (if this is possible). The sound of speakers is one of the most subjective enjoyments in this world, and where the RC3IIs sounded "sharper" to easylistener, I had the opposite experience, with the RC3II sounding slightly sharper than the RC35, but only at high volumes. To me, other than the bass difference, they both tonally matched. One question to also ask yourself is how many hours do you have on your RC35? Some believe in break-in periods for certain speakers; others do not. To me, the sound of my RC35 smoothed out even more after I put considerable hours on the speaker, and I am one that falls into the "break-in" camp. The sound of my RC35 has evolved somewhat over time. It still has the great horn sound, but now there is no hint of any harshness, even at higher, higher volumes and even with the treble setting at neutral. So prior to making a decision, you may want to wait a little while longer if you do not have that many hours on your RC35. Just some thoughts. --------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: RF3II Center: RC35 Surrounds: RS35 Rear: KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD (incredible!) 9. Dave R.: You might also want to search the archives with "KLF-C7." Under the Trouble Shooting section, there is an interesting thread starting by Jaq, with last posting of 5/25/02. Also, look for a thread entitled "KLF-C7 v. RC-3" in the Home Theater section, last posting of 1/4/02. Unfortunately, there have not been any easy answers to your question. I have also seen threads in this forum and some other forums claiming that some KLF-C7s do not perfectly voice match their intended mains during certain applications, such as listening to movies. That being said, you are still probably best off going with a KLF-C7, if you can swing the size. 10. I agree that a RC35 would probably not be a good sonic match for KLF-20s but Dave R. indicated size constraints with respect to a center in a HT setup and he wanted input on the other two centers mentioned. Any KLF-10 to 30 owners out there who have viable, smaller alternatives for a center speaker? Is something custom the only realistic option? Go Rams......... 11. Dougdrake, you are correct. I own a KLF-C7, and it is virtually the same size as the RC7 (ok . . . 4 lbs. lighter, 1 inch longer, and 1 inch less in width). Whoa Nelly, it is big and heavy. However, it is the supposed match for your mains. Perhaps you could place it under your TV or entertainment center somehow? As for the other centers, I found the RC35 slightly smoother than the RC3II at very, very high volumes (when playing music in 6.1). At lower volumes and with movies, not much difference between the two. Maybe a tish more bass for dialogue with the RC35 because of the front ports. You would expect both centers to be fairly close in sound since Klipsch calls the RC35 a "refined version" of the RC3II. I am very pleased with my RC35. A great Klipsch center for those who desire a smaller speaker in both size and weight (compared to the monoliths). You could always purchase a RC3II or a RC35 and return it immediately if the difference with your mains was too glaring. 12. I had just the opposite experience. I originally purchased both centers (RC3II and RC35) and to my ear, both of them voice matched my RF3IIs. I ended up keeping the RC35 because I found that it was slightly smoother than the RC3II at very, very high volumes (when playing music in 6.1). At lower volumes and with movies, not much difference between the two. Maybe a tish more bass for dialogue with the RC35 because of the front ports. All in all, the two speakers are pretty close. 15. The SVS manual does "highly recommend" using your receiver's internal crossover to manage the bass frequencies instead of the subwoofer. I cannot recall what the bass management capabilities of your particular Denon is, such as whether you can specifically set the low crossover for each of your speakers (as with my 525) or whether you have one lower setting for all. I would recommend setting all speakers to "small," even your RF3IIs. Once you get it where you want it, the PB2-ISD is pretty simple to use. Man, what a subwoofer! The worst part is moving it around to different areas of your room while experimenting on the best placement. Ok, ok, there could be worse things ........ With respect to calibration, yes, you still use your Radio Shack SPL meter and adjust via test tones, etc. I currently just use portions of the AVIA disk. Many people run their SVS slightly "hot," that is, approximately 2-3 db higher than the rest of their speakers. Other insane people, like myself, run our SVS as much as 8-10db "hot." Trust me, your PB2-ISD, you are going to love it. ------------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: RF3II Center: RC35 Surrounds: RS35 Rear: KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD (incredible!) 17. A nice, unsubstantiated knock on SVS subs and their owners. Most of the SVS owners in this forum have extensively listened to a variety of Klipsch subs, and therefore, we have some basis for providing opinions on Klipsch subwoofers versus other subwoofers. gcoker, exactly which models of SV Subwoofers have you listened to? My advice for the original poster is that if you are considering purchasing a RSW-12 from an authorized dealer, you may want to consider a SVS PB2-ISD or a SVS PB2+, for that amount of money. Either unit, with dual 12 inch drivers, will surpass a RSW-12 in terms of both music and HT. 18. Yes. That may be somewhat normal. Most new Harmon Kardons now come with a thin, plastic protective sheet/film that covers and protects the display until the new owner takes it off. I initially received my first AVR 525 from an authorized online dealer and shipped the first one back because it had scratches all over the front display. The customer service rep at this company did not immediately explain that there is a "sneaky" protective cover over the display, and it was probably this plastic, protective film that was scratched on my initial unit. I removed the film from my second AVR 525, and the display was perfect. See if you still have a protective cover on the display . . . 19. I have to respectfully disagree. Sure, there have been some purported reliability problems with some HK in the past, but the latest offerings seem to be performing just fine. Even at a conservatively rated 70 watts X 8, my AVR 525 drives my Klipsch very loud and very clean. I also love the warm sound the high current amplification provides (as opposed to my Yamaha, for instance). The reliability of my unit has been fantastic to date. Sure, separates are great, but you do not have to purchase separates to achieve fantastic sound with efficient Klipsch speakers. 20. Very, very, very good (even exceptional) bass subwoofer for home theater. This weekend, rewatched the opening sequence to Saving Private Ryan and the lobby scene from the Matrix with my PB2-ISD (and 20-39PCi) and the bass was so tight, low, and loud - I honestly questioned the structural integrity of my downstairs windows. You will love this sub for home theater, and many SVS owners will tell you that the SVS sound finely compliments the Klipsch sound. I am currently runing my PB2-ISD one port open (16hz) for HT, and two ports open (20hz) for music. Just outstanding.... Or, at the very least, use that sub in another part of your house (with a different system). I have a PB2-ISD, and it is incredible. However, that SVS puts out such tight, clean bass that you will notice the different sound of your KSW 12 in comparison. Plus, with the PB2-ISD, you should not immediately need another sub. The only reason I am still running my 20-39PCi in conjunction with my new PB2-ISD (phase adjusted) is because they both have the same drivers and vocally sound very similar. 22. It somewhat depends on how loud you like to listen to your music and what role you expect your subwoofer to play in your music. My personal opinion is that SVS subs are great for music; in fact, that is what I have primarily used them for. I think some opinions about SVS subs being primarily "HT" subs come from the fact that the subs are not "boomy" but they provide clean, tight bass. As a result, the subs do not "jump out" at you at lower volumes; they just do their job. For example, comparing my 20-39 PCi to my HSU VTF-2, the HSU sounds richer and fuller at lower volumes for jazz, classical, pop, and rock. However, once you get to medium volumes (and on up), my 20-39 PCi presents clean, tight, noticeable bass that can dust the pants off of the HSU. Now, the exception to the above would be my PB2-ISD. Awesome musical sounding sub at any volume. In another world by itself . . . . I think you wanted to stay in the 20-39 PCi's price range, however. ----------------------------------------- Downstairs Harmon Kardon AVR 525 Mains: Klipsch RF3II Center: Klipsch RC35 Surrounds: Klipsch RS35 Rear: Klipsch KLF-C7 SVS 20-39PCi SVS PB2-ISD (incredible!) 23. It depends a little bit on whether you anticipate using this for primarily music, primarily HT or a mix between the both. Originally I went with a 20-39 PCi because I wanted the sub to dig deeper for movies, and I do not believe I sacrificed that much on the overall volume side (will go plenty loud and deep!) 24. The PB2-ISD is worth every penny of the extra money. When I e-mailed Tom and Ron regarding my downstairs "area," they suggested a PB2-ISD. It arrived a week ago Friday. "Wow," basically sums it up. My other SVS (20-39PCi) is a very, very good sub, but this thing is in another league. The 25-31 PC+ is also an outstanding choice, but I really appreciate the output and capabilities of the twin 12 inch drivers. Low, clean, and loud. (Did I mention loud?) E-mail SVS with your room dimensions and listening preferences (type of music, HT and volume levels), and you will get sound (no pun intended), realistic recommendations.
