  1. Yes, it's time to come full circle. Father, thank you for the men and women you have given us who put it on the line, and I ask that you spread your wings of protection over them. Please remove all anxiety, and give them a measure of courage held by the warriors of old. Give them the keenest of senses Lord, so no confusion exists. Clear the battlefield of obstructions, and present the enemy in the open. Let victory be swift and decisive. Let not one be lost -- with you all things are possible.
  2. Man, that's not what I wanted to hear you say. I wanted you to say, "yeah dude, ultralinear's the bomb". I'm a little nervous to change anything right this minute. I need to get some hours on the new boards in the RF-7's. Thank God I didn't muck 'em up -- it sounds really good. Leo was right about the noise floor going down, and the treble goes on forever. No amount of equipment changes could have given me the boost in performance that yanking those mylar caps gave me. I used to talk in terms of less grain -- now there is none. OTOH, Bob Gassel was right too. He warned me that they might end up too forward in presentation, and even though I managed to keep the signature intact for the most part -- it does sound a little more forward. It seems the bottom has dropped back somewhat. It's tough to sort out, because I remember my AE-25 sounding very similiar to this when I pulled the KT-88's and put the Siemens EL-34's in. One thing that is bothering me though, is that they sound a little 'spitty' when I get up to 100db. Of course, that is pretty darn loud, and I only do something like that once in a blue moon. I did go down to just two binding posts per speaker -- and got rid of the biwire option. I soldered both the woofer and tweeter wires directly to the posts. I'm hoping that in a week or two things will settle down. I'm just going to wait and see. Something I don't understand about these amps is they are rated at the same power output into any impedance. I don't get that. The manual says, "60 watts into 4 or 8 ohms", and then, "peak current -- 100 watts (8 ohm tap, 4 ohm load). Of course, that's confusing, because the amps have 4 ohm taps for the speaker cables, and why would someone hook up 4 ohm speakers to the 8 ohm taps? Man, I sound like a rambling fool. At any rate, what I was thinking was that if I stay with ultralinear, the amp will stay in Class A longer, right? I don't remember what you ended up thinking when you dropped those Dynacos into triode. How would you describe the difference you heard? I've been staring hard at the chassis in Kelly's post. My brother-in-law is a sheet metal worker, and there is a place here in Dayton that does chroming and such. I'm going to do some legwork on this.
  3. I'm getting good synergy with silver inside the box and copper on the outside. I think the silver in the box is a must do. Seems to me the easiest way to make a weighted riser is just to make good use of the one already attached to the bottom of the speaker. Cut two pieces of MDF that would fit into the inside edge, and make the fit good enough so that they have to be wedged in. One would be pushed flush with the bottom of the cabinet, the other would act as the bottom 'plate' -- and would get tribond around the edges to keep it in place. A tight fit would act as a natural clamp so the glue would take hold better. When dry, I would drill a hole, pour in lead shot until full, and then plug the hole. What can I say -- I'm lazy.
  4. There's nothing really wrong with the Philips 6922. I ran them in one of my Anthem preamps, and I thought they sounded pretty good. The Amperex white labels were slightly warmer -- but nothing to get all worked up over. I'm starting to think we need to get over this triode fixation. I've been burning in the Quicksilvers, and they sound dynamite. The EL-34 is a little lean on the bass side of things, but the freaking midrange and huge soundstage are all enveloping.
  5. You can get a nice pair off of eBay shipped to you for $250 less.
  6. I now declare the '2 Channel Forum' under the authority and direct control of the 'General Forum'. I'm going to go live with the Inmates for a while.
  7. I'm going back to the '1 2 3 what are we fighting for' thread.
  8. Paranoia runs deep...into our lives it will creep
  9. I don't think anyone is trying to "further" their political views -- we all have our opinions, and they are not likely to change even with a 2 by 4. It's just debate, lot's of point-counterpoint. It's supposed to be fun. Iron sharpening iron. It's part of what makes up Americans. There is really no need for anyone to get bent.
  10. If what you are saying is true, then even 5692 Redbases, made from different runs in different years -- should sound different. I've compared the RCA Redbase and CBS Brownbase -- I couldn't tell a difference at all. Of course, this doesn't mean you don't. Looking at them both side by side -- they look identical in every way.
  11. Dag gone Andy, lighten up a little. What does it matter if it's this thread or another. Most threads start as one thing, and turn into another. Greg started the thread, and has popped in several times -- he certainly doesn't seem upset. We are Americans. We are not supposed to agree with each other. We are free thinking individuals who have the right and privilage of saying anything we want, anytime we want. Debate is part of our nature and system. Without it -- we're just freaking robots.
  12. Orders will be coming any day. I have a friend who's son is a 'Pathfinder' -- he left for Iraq last night. Poop will fly soon.
  13. Randy, I thought the Laurels did have 6SN7's? At any rate -- If you need another pair, I have a brand new set of CBS Brownbase 5692's over here that you can have. Kelly won't agree, but it's the same tube as the Redbase. Made by RCA for CBS. I think I put 4 hours on them with my AE-3 DJH. Just get me your mailing address -- and you can have them. Passing along the grace and generosity shown to me by Edmond.
  14. Craig, I apologize, and I hope you can forgive me. I just wanted to throw a little salt in your eyes, I didn't mean for you to take it as you did. Looks like Hussein blinked. He's giving up those two missles. Interesting. Andy, you may be right. It may be a done deal. Like I said, once it starts, I'll be changing gears. I went to bed last night praying for special protection on Ranger and Craig's son. I prayed for a swift and decisive victory. I prayed confusion on the enemy, and I prayed for the Iraqi people. I then prayed that God keep the rest of Middle East out of this one. Looks like I'll be adding Andy to the list tonight. In my head, I rebel against this whole thing -- but in my heart, I'm with the warriors. 100%. No reason for anyone to stay upset with each other. Venting is good. We need each other for that.
  15. I didn't mean it as a low blow, and I think you know that. I meant it in the sincerest way. You see, that's the way I look at this whole thing. Is it worth the ultimate sacrifice? I have a 17 year old son who could end up in this thing if it gets out of hand. I look at him and think -- would I give him up for this? HELL NO! I'm the kind of person that if it's worth it, if it's a must do -- I'm first in line. If world peace could come by putting a bullet through me head -- I would pull the trigger myself. To put this whole thing in it's proper perspective, we HAVE to personalize the issue. I'm sorry, but the ultimate sacrifice demands the ultimate argument -- and I just don't see it. My dad goes out and gets drunk every November 23rd, comes home and cries himself to sleep. He's been doing this since 1967, when Uncle Pat was gunned down in the back pushing two wounded friends into a chopper. I don't want to see anyone go through that for the wrong reasons.
  16. I just don't get the sense of urgency on this thing. He's had these weapons for a decade -- and NOW we wanna get him. GET HIM, GO...NOW, GO...HURRY...GET HIM NOW NOW NOW NOW. Yeesh. Some of you sound like rabid dogs. So which is it? Are we going after him as part of the war on terrorism, or is it because of Resolution 1441? Does this mean we go after Israel next -- since they are currently in violation of quite a few themselves. I guess bulldozing Palestinian homes and schools, and throwing people into refugee camps isn't "terrorism". Consistency thou art a jewel.
  17. 1 trillion or 10 trillion? How about 1. Tell me the truth Craig -- would you give up your son?
  18. I enjoyed reading that post.
  19. I was actually thinking that since you had the sub -- you could get by with some nice monitors like the RB-5. However, you really didn't tell us anything about the size of your room, or what you like to listen too, or how loud, etc...
  20. Take my word for it. Dennis is The Man. He's going to figure it out, stumble onto something interesting, turn it into a jewel, send yours back -- and then make another 1000 of them. Don't sweat it and be patient -- it'll work out.
  21. Mark is right on with everything he has said, and I'm astounded that with all the gripping logic, it has failed to take hold. Forget the complexities involved with the issue, and just focus on the obvious. Hussein has WOMD -- what the hell are we doing sending anybody in there? You don't think this clown is going to use them? We back him into a corner and this is going to get ugly fast. You think Israel is going to sit this one out after he launches an Anthrax laced scud into Jerusalem? Think Syria is sleepwalking through this? Turkey, Greece, and Saudi Arabia? Can you say dubya dubay dubya III? Since Saudi won't cooperate in our endeavor to root terrorists out of their society -- we now feel the need to potentially off a million people so we can have a presence in the Middle East. One more thing. The chances of Hussein and the secular Baath Party doing ANYTHING to help out the Wahhabis, or that the Wahhabis would take a single dime from Hussein -- is about 0%
  22. "Mr. Bush is unique in this regard of divining the direction of our nation through the Word of God..." Seriously Mark, there is nothing unique about this. Think about it. There is no way a person can separate out their belief system from their decision making. At any rate, if he were really driving the direction of the nation using the Word of God -- he wouldn't be doing this. "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world...Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness." http://www.castlebar.ie/news/printer_no_to_the_iraq_war.html And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam; And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The only thing men learn from history, is that men never learn from history. Klipsch Out.
  23. I don't even want to know what Kelly was doing at the site associated with the link he provided. Egads. Mark, though I agree with your analysis, and have been enjoying the thread with your marvelous posts (which have saved me a multitude of keystrokes) -- I think you went over the line. Please be careful with this kind of thing. Judas Iscariot was a religious/political zealot, who had little in common with the other disciples of Christ. I'm also offended that you correlate a lack of intelligence with religious zealotry. Again, please refrain from stereotyping. I am a religious zealot. Yet, I have no intention of dragging anyone, kicking and screaming -- into God's kingdom. I am also Historical Amillennial from an eschatological perspective, which puts me at major odds with the Dispensational Premillennial teachings prevading the majority of churches. The doctrines associated with the latter are responsible for much of the lunacy regarding Christian political positions and the country's infatuation with Israel. Raw Christianity as Jesus, Paul, and Co. taught -- is a far cry from much of what is out there. There are many of us just trying to live decent, quiet lives.
  24. Geepers Doug -- your'e slipping. Didn't you read the poor guys post? "I'm living in Belgium- Europe, and that doesn't make things easier. Buying in the USA is virtually impossible, because of the very high shipping costs, taxes and so on. In Europe these speakers aren't so widely spread, so chances to find them are much less."
