    dvds

Ive had a Panasonic DMR-E60 DVD Recorder for about a year. It is a very nice unit. I use it almost every day. I can record directly to DVD-R or DVD-RAM. Using DVD-RAM you can record over and over again, just like VHS. Using DVD-R you can record only one time on it. I paid almost $600 for mine a year ago, but you can now get them for under $500. I just did a search for Panasonic DMR-E60 and found a site selling it for $458 including shipping. If you buy it online just make sure you ask about the warranty many sites do not offer a warranty or it is extra cost. I haven't bought any DVD-RAM's in a while but I think they are now about $15 each. I just bought 200 Bulk DVD-R's for $97 including shipping.
  2. The Radio Shack analog sound meter is now available again -- I bought one last week at my local RS store. I just went to their site and they're now listed there again too, here's the link. http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=33-4050 I also have the AVIA Guide to Home Theater DVD and it definitely improved my sound and picture.
  3. Ive had a DishPVR 721 for a year now and I absolutely love it. It has a 120 GB hard drive for 90 hours of recording time and it will record two shows at the same time. I also have a Panasonic DMR-E60 DVD Recorder which I use almost every day since I can record directly to DVD-RAM or DVD-R this is also a great unit.
  4. ---------------- are you sort of getting the "consensus" from what most of us think???? ---------------- Yes, if you have a very, very, very thin wire power cable then MAYBE a higher quality power cable could improve your sound -- needless to say, I will stay with what I now have -- thanks everyone for your comments!
  5. Whats the consensus here on upgrading power cords for processors and amps ??? Should the power cord for both the processor and the amp be upgrade or just the amp or what ??? I just read this on Signal Cables site: An immediate improvement in bass extension and details, as well as a wider and deeper soundstage. Is this actually true ??? Is there such a noticeable difference as suggested by this statement ??? Which brands of power cords are best/recommended ??? (Signal, CobaltCable, others ???)
  6. Depends on if his posted prices are the same as the list prices. If it's 10% off list prices then I think you can do better. For example, when I bought my RF-7's from Good Guys I got them for $849 each, which is 23% off their posted list price of $1100 each. Hope this helps.
  7. Thanks everyone for your comments! I ordered two of the Aura PRO Bass Shakers -- so I look forward to receiving them next week.
  8. Parts Express offers the Aura Standard Bass Shakers for $29.80 per pair and they offer the Aura PRO Bass Shakers for $24.88 each. Which ones do you guys use and recommend ??? Do the Standard shakers perform well enough or are the Pro shakers required ??? This will be an experiment for me. Ill be putting them on a loveseat or, I read that you can put them on your floor joists is putting them on the floor joists a good/bad idea ???
  9. It sounds really great but I wanted to make sure that they were not interfering with each other being close and especially since the RF-7 ports are aimed directly at the SVS.
  10. I just got my new SVS 20-39PC-Plus sub and I have a question about its placement. The owners guide recommends a corner, but the only corner I have is directly behind my front right RF-7. With the SVS in that corner there is only 16 inches clearance between the SVS and the back of the RF-7 -- is this okay ??? Will the SVS and the rear ports of the RF-7 somehow wrongly interfere with each other ???
  11. Dean - a few questions please: ---------------- On 3/30/2004 4:08:19 PM DeanG wrote: Bill is right. The crossover design for the RC-7 was designed by Klipsch for that particular cabinet, port sizes, as well as those particular drivers and their alignment. I still think 'timbre matching' is something that is achieved by making sure all of the drivers in the system are of the same type. ---------------- Please clarify the above - you're saying that someone with a pair of RF-7's and an RC-7 should get new crossovers for all 3 speakers for proper 'timbre matching' ??? Have you actually tested your crossover on an RC-7 and achieved/heard the same improvements as you did on the RF-7 ??? ---------------- On 3/29/2004 5:20:41 PM DeanG wrote: You mean cost? The same. I figure anyone willing to do three should get some kind of a break. ---------------- The above is saying you will do all 3 speakers for $425 ??? Once you receive our boards, how long does it take until we get them back from you ??? If 2nd day or overnight return shipping is requested, what is the additional cost ??? This is probably a dumb question, but I assume this mod will void the warranty with Klipsch ???
  12. Thanks everyone for your comments -- great info! It seems the preferred way is to use a calibration disk. I bought the AVIA disk several months ago but I have not even opened it yet -- so as soon as I figure out how to use it, that's what I'll start using from now on.
  13. When I calibrate my speakers I use my SPL meter and the built-in tones of my receiver. What Im wondering is why do I sometimes read that its best to use a calibration disc like the ones from Digital Video Essentials or Avia to calibrate your speakers ??? Is there a preferred way ??? What are the pros and cons of using the built-in tones from a receiver or pre/pro vs. using a calibration disc ???
  14. I'm getting a Parasound C2 and want to know which amp to use, the A51 at 250 watts RMS x 5 or- the A52 at 125 watts RMS x 5 or- should I just use my 1205A that I already have ??? I can't demo these so I have some questions: 1. Im told that my 1205A is a little too bright for the C2 vs. the A51 and A52 - true or false ??? Will I really hear a difference between say the 1205A and the A52 ??? 2. Is the A51 at 250 watts RMS x 5 an overkill for my RF-7's, keeping in mind that the A51 is 2 times the cost of the A52 at 125 watts RMS x 5 ??? Will I really hear a difference between the A51 and A52 ??? Any and all comments appreciated.
  15. steelie: What did you do to get the RB 35s in the right place -- can you explain please ???
  16. Yes, you can biwire the RF-35's and the RC-35. Each speaker has two sets of posts, one set for the high freq and one set for the low freq. I agree with JTS8 to borrow a set of biwires from your local shop and let your ears decide.
  17. After a couple months of using my Yamaha RX-V2400, for me, something was missing in the sound quality. After reading messages on this board and others, and talking to a local HT dealer, everything pointed to getting a separate amp. I bought the Parasound 1205A. I considered the 2205A but Parasound tech support and others said it was overkill for Klipsch speakers. Now, my overall sound quality, especially the clarity of dialog in movies is noticeably better Im very happy with the 1205A. Im now considering a separate pre/pro which Im told will also noticeably improve my sound quality.
  18. Im now using RS-35s for my left/right surrounds and one RC-35 for rear center for 6.1. I just read some messages where some are using RF-35/RF-5 towers for left/right surrounds. I thought that left/right surrounds were supposed to be about 3 feet above ear level, hence the RS-35s and RS-7s - so can someone explain the reasons to use (or not use) towers for surrounds ??? I want to go from 6.1 to 7.1 -- heres my options -- which option would be the best sounding: Option # 1: Buy another RC-35 for the rear, then Ill have two RC-35s as rear surrounds (see my sig below). Option # 2: Move my two RS-35s to rear, then move my RF-35s for left/right surrounds, then buy two RF-7s for my fronts. Option # 3: Sell my rear RC-35, then buy two RS-7s for my left/right surrounds, then use my two RS-35s for my rear surrounds. Or, any other suggestions ??? In case anyone is wondering, my current setup sounds fantastic, I just want to go to 7.1.
  19. Would you be interested in a new RC-35 ??? I just decided to sell my new RC-35 that Im currently using as my rear surround for a 6.1 system. Once I sell the RC-35 Im going to buy two RS-7s for my surrounds and then use my two RS-35s for my rear surrounds for a 7.1 system. Im selling it for $265 (firm) and I will pay UPS Ground shipping costs. The RC-35 is only two months old and has only been used in a smoke-free environment. The RC-35 is in perfect condition -- no scratches or nicks. I will ship the RC-35 in the original double-boxed packaging with the manual. Msg me with any questions you may have.
  20. ---------------- To make life easy, you could use video cables (including your RG6 DIYers) for ALL your connections, except for speakers of course. ---------------- dougdrake: I also bought a Parasound 1205A amp and when I asked the salesman about usding RG6 Quad as interconnects from the 1205A to my receiver, he said absolutely not because the RG6 was the wrong ohms ???
  21. I bought a Denon DVD-2900 today from Good Guys and the salesman also wanted to sell me about $500 in cables ouch! From reading the DVD-2900 manual heres all the cables I think I need: 1. For Video: One set of Component Video Cables - can I use RG6 Quad-Shield with RCAs ??? 2. For sound: A Digital Optical or- Digital Coaxial - which is better to use ??? If I use the Digital Coaxial connection can I use RG6 Quad-Shield with RCAs ??? 3. For the Multi Channel cables for SACDs - can I use RG6 Quad-Shield with RCAs ??? The reason Im asking about the RG6 Quad-Shield with RCAs is I have a hundred feet of it and I have the RCAs - BUT I DO NOT want to use the RG6 if it will in any way degrade the quality of the DVD-2900s picture and sound output. Any help and suggestions are really appreciated, thanks!
  22. When I first got the RX-V2400 I had mixed feelings about it, but now that I've had it for several months, I do really like it -- although just for curiosity, I'd like to try a Denon 3803/3805 with my speakers just to see if there is any difference. I got it from etronics.com.
  23. What is the major difference between Pro Logic IIx and Pro Logic II ???
  24. tillmbil: Yes, the Yamaha does have preouts. Watchengineer: Yes, the 2400 does have a center equalizer. I found the problem last night! When I bought the RC-7 3 weeks ago I also bought a new AR Pro Series II Digital Optical cable which I connected from my satellite receiver to the Yamaha RX-V2400. And for 3 weeks I've been trying to tweak the Yamahas sound settings and trying different speaker cables with no success. Well, last night I started changing every cable going into the Yamaha, and when I changed my new AR Optical cable with an old $4 Optical cable, bingo, the RC-7 now sounds absolutely great! I then started tweaking the center channels equalizer and I am now a happy camper! I do have a question about the equalizer: I can change 7 different settings which include 63Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1k Hz, 2.5k Hz, 6.3k Hz, 16k Hz what I dont know is which ones should I change that will mainly affect the dialog/speech in a movie ??? I was going to do a +2db on these settings and then tweak it from there to suit my ears. Thanks to everyone for your comments!
