Can someone explain the bass traps they made using cardboard tubes (like the ones they sell at Home Depot for concrete) and then filling them with sand. Since the guy doing the room is a Home Theater professional with an engineering degree, Im assuming the sand is an effective media for bass traps -- but does anyone know why sand and the technical/acoustical explanation of using sand ?

Carl, How would you compare the differences in listening to a CD on your JD-100A vs. your Denon DVD-2900 ? What mods does your JD-100A have ?

I called my electric company about 15 years ago and here's the formula they gave me to calculate how much it costs per hour to run any electrical unit: (amps * volts) / 1000 = KWH then multiply (KWH * your electric companys KWH cost) = cost per hour to run unit Example: I have a small fan in my office that is rated at 0.8 amps, therefore: (0.8 amps * 120 volts) / 1000 = .0960 KWH .0960 KWH * .10604 KWH cost = .0102 cents > so my fan costs me about 1 cent per hour to run I got the .10604 KWH cost from my recent electric bill or you can call your local electric company and theyll have that cost for you.

Colin, Parasound will be sticking with their C1/C2 because the units are upgradeable. A new software upgrade with lots of new features is said to be released next week. Bill, Define "If a room is big enough". My room is 14x21 and I have one RC-35 in the back. I also have two RF-35's that I'm not using and was going to try them in the back. Is my room too small for two rears, or would it help the rear sound ???

Hello, I'm told that I want the lowest possible capacitance cable I can find, is this true ??? I need a pair of RCAs between my Scout and phono preamp -and- a pair of RCAs between my phono preamp and preamp. Can/should these two pairs be the same type cables ??? Thanks Michael - I'm now understanding better the need for more uniform co-efficients at all frequencies. Unfortunately, since these panels are going into my living room I cant use 4 thick, so Im going to review the co-efficients of the Knauf 2 panels tonight to see if they are more uniform. Another possible option is hiring Rives Audio. They claim to be able to get your room acoustically near-perfect without huge panels and such in the room (it will still look like a living room, not a sound studio with huge panels everywhere) but this is at a price of $900 for their designing and engineering plans, and then I would do the actual work in the living room myself has anyone used Rives design services ??? Is it worth the $900 cost ???

What size are the covers your sister made for you ??? And you're using them how/where - you hung them on the walls and/or the corners ??? What about your ceiling ??? And I'm guessing they are working well for you ???

Ive been reading and reading about room treatments and heres what Im going to do to start: 1. Put one 12 diameter by 3 foot high bass trap behind each of my front RF-7s. (The traps will be DIY per Jon Risch and Adam Salisbury plans.) 2. Put one 12 diameter by 3 foot high bass trap in each rear wall corner. 3. Centered on front wall, put one 1 x 2 x 4 sheet of Knauf 3.0 PCF FSK Insulation Board mounted directly to wall. (covered with burlap or Guilford acoustical cloth) 4. Centered on rear wall, put one 1 x 2 x 4 sheet of Knauf 3.0 PCF FSK Insulation Board mounted directly to wall. 5. At RC-7 reflection point on ceiling, put one 1 x 2 x 4 sheet of Knauf 3.0 PCF FSK Insulation Board mounted directly to wall. 6. My room is L-shaped so I have no left side front wall, but at the RF-7 reflection point on the right side front wall, put one 1 x 2 x 4 sheet of Knauf 3.0 PCF FSK Insulation Board Am I on the right track to start - and then experiment from this point on ??? Critical Question: Is the 1 thick x 2 x 4 Knauf 3.0 PCF FSK Insulation Board the correct board to get ??? The coefficients are: 125=.21, 250=.63, 500=.84, 1000=.93, 2000=.51, 4000=.22. Where I live it is impossible to buy any kind/brand of rigid fiberglass insulation board, but I found a Knauf dealer that will ship it to me so I want to be absolutely sure that I order the proper board. Is there a unit on the market that DOES NOT affect sound quality but DOES protect against lightning ???

I too am going to 7.1 in the near future. With the RB's in the back, how far apart should they be from each other ??? I've read that they should be right next to each other (within a foot or so) and I've read they should be inline with the fronts - your opinions and experiences ???

In your owner's manual on page 28 Basic Setup, it shows you how to get into the Setup screen where youll select Manual Setup. Then on page 47 Set Menu, it walks you step-by-step through all of the settings. On page 49 it shows the Sound Menu->Speaker Set which is where youll set your small and large settings. From the Sound Menu you need to set ALL of the settings - including Speaker Set, Speaker Level and Speaker Distance. Since you already ran the auto mic, most of these settings are probably already properly set, but you should check and confirm that the auto mic did a proper setting.

You can configure the 2400 using the 'auto mic' which will automatically set ALL of your settings, or you can get into the 2400's setup (my preference) and manually set the settings. I initially did not have great bass with my 2400s setup, but after some experimentation I found that when my RC-7 was set to small and the RF-7s were set to large and crossover set to 80, the bass was pretty good. Since you say that you have not found the "large" or "small" setting on the yamaha receiver, I recommend that you first use the 'auto mic' -- this will adjust ALL of the settings in your 2400 to give you a starting point for the settings per the acoustics of your room, and then get into the 2400's setup to manually tweak any settings you want.
