  1. Well this brightens my eve a little!!!! Just got to work, ready for a 12 hr shift (in a radio room), and I am running a 101 fever. Only 11 hrs and 50 minutes left till I egt to go home sleep all day and do it one more time....can you say lucky kids????? I just picked up some RF-35's myself. My wife and I demoed them against some Paradigms and then went for a walk to talk. I was very interested in the Heritage line but the WAF factor was to powerful. Still working out some kinks with my amp but everything is sounding great. We don't have a lot of room to spare though for various setups. How do you have your new toys setup, and nice nice to meet both of you. your hurt-box, Jon
  2. Thanks, I'll look at your past post and figure it out; if I can't I'll be in touch. I tried the REC out of the mixer but it was too much for it. Does it have more gain or less than the phono stage? I think it is not a normal tape loop as ryan mentioned that before. thanks Jon
  3. Craig, Yeah it's a 2mv I believe. I can try that shorting plug tonight. Can I use a cheapy RCA that came with my denon cd player? Or do I need something more substantial? So do you still think I shouldn't be having as much noise? It starts at about 12 faintly, but at 2:00 you can hear it clearly from across the room 13-14 ft. Also, what is up with the TAPE input...is this for an ultra low signal.....it seems to have an ENORMOUS amount of gain...more than the phono stage!!!! Wonder if I could use it for that? I really love my X5-MC and I like this Sherwood even though seperates would have probably been less of a headache or $$$. thanks, JC
  4. I like to use the DJ mixer because I have so many sources. When I plug in the cd player to the Sherwood AUX input I am getting a lot more gain for a couple reasons. I was using the REC out of the DJ mixer not the MASTER to avoid any amplification and overload of the Sherwood preamp. I was only rasing sliders to 7 (which is marked for use with Master). Now I see that for the mixer to have equal gain as the cd player the sliders have to go to ten. So....I haven't been able to try shorting yet, but my ratios were all screwy. I will set the volume as mdeen suggested and then try the cd player directly hooked up to the amp and then through the DJ mixer. If I raise the sliders on the dj mixer to equal what I was hearing with the the direct cd connection I should be okay. Ryan says this is a high gain high impedance amp and when it was directly connected to the amp I couldn't turn the dial to 2:00...just too loud. My turntable cart is a high ouput moving coil so of course I am getting not much as much gain out of the phono stage as I'd like but it's good enough. Others have commented that they have no hiss at all even with the gain cranked to max. I wonder if my experience is just inherent to this amp. Jon
  5. NOSvalves, thanks I tried that and then put in three black plate rca's and two tele's....same result with cd player and a dj mixer. My wife can hear the hiss at 2:00 at 13 feet ...at that distance it is "subtle" but at half that it is plain tough to bear. I just turned the amp on again and from the couch (13') to me it is not subtle. I turn on a Miles cd and while the cd his its own noise, when coupled with the amp's hiss it gets purdy loud. The rightmost AX7 is a telefunken and it starts to whining as my finger gets near it ...if I touch it it howls. I wonder if it's the tube or the socket ...I'll have to check. The 7199 just beind it seems to respond to a light tap like none of the other tubes, it too sounds off but not like the tele. Jon
  6. Well I am getting this hiss on AUX and Phono. I don't use the tape input. The AM and FM sections when I switch past them going between phono and aux have a hum on them; nothing is plugged into them. I have a Ferrite core on the power cord for the heck of it. Tonight I will re-check how loud this hiss is. This amp has had some weird experiences...it blew two tubes in the pre-amp section somehow. I had to send it back to Ryan to be checked out. As I said earlier, the amp sounds great, just too much hiss, and I am starting to think it's more than I should expect. Ryan has been amazing supporting this amp and me with my questions and I am in no way saying anything bad about him and his work here; he has truly impeccable integrity. Just trying to get to the bottom of this hiss. Hopefully I will hear from him via email tonight. If I get some tubes that are renowned for being exceptionally quiet, I wonder what kind of change I can expect. This is all assuming the tubes are at fault so.... who knows? I am probably overreacting but last night that classical music just bugged me the way the hiss hung over it and blocked the quiet passages like a cloud. Jon
  7. This hiss increases with the volume control and is independent of any hiss on recordings or created by components (TT). It's really more than I'd like but I don't know how much to expect to have since it's a vintage rebuilt integrated (my first). Even at a reasonable listening level the hiss really "confuses" the music, especially classical. JOn
  8. Well I can hear the music, it just seems the hiss is quite loud, so...in a way I guess your right actually. Assuming the amp is okay...how beneficial is a pair of NOS Mullard, Mazda, RCA 12AX7's in the phono or entire pre going to be? Compared to getting a set of EI elites. I would like to find an X7 that is most importantly quiet but sounds great. I will try something tonight that I have been pondering to relieve the hiss. Jon
  9. Thanks. Ryan Inman did an amzing job on this integrated and it sounds incredible. I just picked up some RF-35's and they are sounding better every time I sit down for a listen. They are just so sensitive, that hiss is really overwhelming. The S-5000 is about 20-25 watts...I can't remember exactly. At noon, the hiss isn't present, but I find I am listenning at a louder level like 2:30 which is 0db on the dial; at this point when listening to classical the hiss is overwhelming the quiet passages. I have some other tubes I 'd like to try, my uncle has two more RCA black plates that would give me the 5 I would need for the preamp. I attribute the hiss to the fact that is a tube unit and just want to see if I can do anything else to help. Are those O rings for elimating microphonics? Can anyone recommend some new or NOS 12AX7's I could try. How are the new EI or Sovtek 12AX7's. thanks JOn
  10. Can changing pre-amp tubes make a big difference in tube rush/hiss? Right now I am using 5 RCA 12AX7's but I have three black plate RCA's and 2 Tele's sitting around that I might try tonight. DC

  12. So Dean's upgrades are replacing parts in the cross-overs and not 'changing' anything? Also, what about jumpers? Are people replacing the stock ones? They're brass right? thanks DC
  13. The Band - Jubilation (or any of the remastered albums) Culture - Humble African (a gem for both content and quality) Secret Chiefs - Eyes of Fire Eyes of Flame (was given this....reminds me of Bungle) DC
  14. Okay....good advice. I will be using a Inmanized Sherwood S-5000 that has been a "picky beast" but it runs quiet adn sounds great. We'll see how it gels with the RF-35 if sound good this weekend; maybe they will let me take them home or something, I don't know? Anyone know a general break-in time for these speakers? Jon
  15. Hello again folks! Lately I have posted a couple questions regarding the Heritage line and there WAF discussion. I have come to realize I really cannot make enough space for something like Cornwalls or Lascalas. So. this weekend we are going to listen to a pair of RF-35's at New England Hi-Fi here in Maine, and whatever else they have on the floor. They want 849$ and they come w/ some monster cable. Buying online would be a bad idea I guess; 100$ cheaper but no warranty etc. Any opinions on bi-wiring these? Since they would come with speaker cable, I am interested in trying to to bi-wire them by getting some Belden CC89259 from Alexcable or make some myself. Opinions anyone? keep tuckin' DC
  16. If it looks okay, I 'd say next step is to test the suspension by lowering it to a record. Is this an expensive cart? I know some have a hollow cantilever and liquid cleaning must be done a very small/careful amounts so as not to draw any up the cant/ DC
  17. Find a registry editor that list out author/software or go into the registry by typing regedit into the RUN command bar on your "start" panel. Look in Local Machine>Software and delete any windvd entries. try www.shareordie.com instead of peer to peer DC
  18. Audio: EAC (free) for ripping.....Fuerio! for burning DVD: Sonic RecordNow is better than Nero
  19. You can go into Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Disk Management and format away, but it is mostly recommended to use 3rd party software like Part. Magic 8. I assume your reading up on dual booting so good luck! DC
  20. Okay....okay...just kidding, We live in an apartment until this Nov. when we move to Tampa or St. Pete, and ...........probably into another apt. Hopefully not though. We have our bedroom and with her closet...and "my" room with my closet... it's the media room....nothing atop my speakers....I can't stand for that it's nice, computer/stereo setup, futon, and we had a nice wood coffee table that I finished until I had to move things around to accomodate the drum kit LOL. I like being able to practice but the room was just so mellow with the low circular beautifully stained table etc. "That rug tied the room together man" ala The Dude from the Big Lebowski Anyway....Greg....600$ Corns...although I am a newbie, my newborn Klipsch-sense is telling me this is a deal.....! If I can get my money together in a month will you still have them. What finish do they have??? More info more info...I salivate Klipsch-drool!!!! And, Greg, how far north of Portland are you...I would really love to come up this this week or next. I know it's short notice but also this trouble I have been with sound card amp etc. it would be great to see & hear something that works...I could eye those corns too. I have thurs, fri, sat, & sun off this week. And next week....fri, sat, sun, mon. DC DC
  21. Hey guys, This thread is both informative and hillarious....y'all have some good advice. I dumped her.... ...hello Khorns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DC ps Can anyone take a roomie?
  22. Any Rolling Stones album....? Just from what my uncle always says so I dunno, just throwing it out there...most likely their older stuff. DC
  23. Hey Griff, I need to elaborate here. When I turned off my Sherwood tube amp while the mixer was on I got a massive feedback loop that fried my soundcard. when you mute the inputs on a Delta 44, yes the signal still is monitored as it shows up on the input meter, but the Delta master volume meter will not monitor it until you unmute it. When I want to record a Real audio bcst or a winamp mix (can't seem to get kernel streaming to work) I could take the output right back into the input. I would only get feedback if I unmuted that input signal and raised the fader. If you do that you get that tin can echo feedback. I think this explosive loopback was something else. I remember reading that the mixer should be turned "on last off first" I think that was it. I use the REC out of my mixer because my impression was that it was not amplified like the Master out. The master fader does not change the levels on the channel faders. The other outs are zone and send which are for other "rooms". Zone has a little vol. know and send doesn't. The other night I was using the 1&2 sound card outs to the mixer and then the mixer feeding back to soundcard inputs; I kept those channels muted and let Wavelab record it. I really think this was a result of turning off the Sherwood before the mixer. I haven't tried it again because I don't want to risk damaging the Sherwood....since the card or its breakout box already bit the dust. Jon
  24. I was thinking that since I had the inputs muted and turned down they would not create the loop but I remember now they will pickup or monitor rather, anyting that is hooked up as you said. I was hoping to run everything through the mixer first because I didn't want to rely on the PC being on to listen to the radio, tape, cd, etc. and also trying to get the tubed signal of the components into the PC via the Sherwood when I make a mix. One way to get around this would be to disconnect the PC audio out or pull the Sherwood's rec out of the breakout box depending on what I want to do make a mix with all the components or archive Lp's. I was trying to use the PC audio out as another source going to the mixer as you said it just won't work. I just didn't htink this through. I upgraded from a 24/96 because I thought it would be nice to have all the components controlled by the mixer then sent to the tubed Sherwood and output to the pc for making a mix. I didn't want to have to unhook or change cables around....but that's exactly what I am going to have to do. Fortunately, I have an XLR mixer and some mics so the card will come in handy for that type of recording. *whew* thanks, Jon
