  1. sorry to hear your first tube expierience was'nt so good! I find that tube amplfication is not as bright as SS amps IMHO What brand of tube amp is it?Maybe something is wrong elsewhere in the system. We all have our own likes and dislikes when it comes to the sound we hear,if your B&K rig is better for you then I hope you enjoy! Greg
  2. might be of interst to some http://www.hifilit.com/hifilit/Klipsch/Klipsch.htm http://www.hifilit.com/ Greg
  3. Hello, Happy Holidays! Here is a link to some good info on many aspects of subs. Many of you have probably read it before but I'm sure it could be helpfull to some: http://sound.westhost.com/subcon.htm Greg
  4. Hello, Got a project system on my hands!I am currently running my La Scala's 2way with an Altec 511/902 driver combo. They sit on top at this time and I had planned to make the appropriate incisions to the front baffle but I dont think I can bring myself to do it! These Scala's are just to beautiful to cut up.They are factory black and almost perfect. They look cool and mean and wow!!!... love that Scala look. I was gonna split the tops and do some serious vibe control to the bass bins and make the tops so a person could rotate or rather toe in for best imaging. I guess I need to move on to plan B which is to find a set of bins to restore and do the vibe mods. The tops I can probably build. Does anyone see them around? Is there someone here to build a set and what kind of money? If so I'll let you in on my secret vibe control theorys! LOL Seriously I can't cut mine up so plan B is on. Greg
  5. Yup for the most part. Although I bet there are at least some differences that your audio memory isn't able to pickup. To me though if this ends up being a wash why not just stick with your PP amps? Craig Craig, I have wanted to hear this SET sound and so far I like! Another reason is that I am running the La Scala's 2way with the Altec horn for everything above 500hz.The PP monos I have are rated at 50watts,a little more power than the Altec 902 is rated for. Then you have that 1st watt theory...guess I am exploring that idea. BTW this system plays extremely loud if I want and with only the 4 watts hooked directly and dedicated to that horn...WOW!!! I am really liking the SET and the simplicity of the circut.I have always believed a system with the least amont of weak links sounds better, this is just another step in that direction for me. This system is SWEEEET!!! and a review is forthcoming once I get some more seat time with it all. Greg
  6. Happy Holidays everyone I have read that PP amps are better for rock&roll music. I have pulled my PP amps in favor of SET amps. The system is configured as follows: Decware SET powering my Altec 511B/902's for everything above 500hz, The bass bins on my La Scala's are powered by a Bryston 3B SS amp, The lowest freq.are handled by 2x18 Bagend passives also powered by a Bryston SS amp.All signals being divided by an active xover. This configuration is a week new and I'm still getting a feel for the sound.I really liked the sound of the PP's and the Scala's...lots of toe tappin goin on.Still theres lots of tappin with the new rig as well! My question would be is this a myth or have I negated the issue using SS amplification for the lows? When I got into tubes a few yrs. back I chose the PP circut for that toe tappin and my music genure is mostly R&R.That is what I had read about the different topologies. Is all that rythym issue related to bass ie. the driving force behind the whole presentation? What I'm hearing with the new rig does'nt sound any different from the PP's..and I am trying to listen for it. Thanks,Greg
  7. LOL,now thats thinking! Greg
  8. He can't work there anymore because his article flies in the face of everything Stereo@#%$ brainwashes us with!!!! I got an attitude... yea I know, but I blame them for my trip through the dark forest...how many other people are they leading astray? Greg
  9. Well folks this thread has alot of meaning to me! I read the whole thing...kind of boring except for the emotional part which I can relate to! I had a La Scala based system for about 10 years and my freinds RAVED about my SYSTEM....sometime in that time period I started reading STEROPHILE(what a mistake!!!!!). I was convinced that I could build a better system and sold the Scala's for a killer $20,000 system that I put togetther. My old friends said it was OK,my new friends that never heard the Scalas RAVED about the sound of the new system(and I kept saying ...man you should have heard my KLIPSCH LA SCALA's I used to have) After 5 years of reading Stereo@#%$ I was so frustrated...oh I had killer sound from 20hz to 20khz,cleanest ever heard to this day!!!!!WOW...but something was missing...I was into that soundstage,definition...BLAH BLAH BLAH..,insanity,chasing my tail but I got there and WOW the sound was just as THEY described it SHOULD be...I hate stereo@#%$ as they represent the Dark road in my audiophile expierience. All along I knew I made a mistake and denied it ...I no longer have a subscription to this magazine, from the day I bought my present La Scala's. My new subsciption is this forum and the kind members who know what real music reproduction is all about...the emotion it produces. This thread has prompted me to say what I wanted to when I joined this forum.I was going to start a thread called I'M BACK...to Klipsch, my audiophile journey. The system I have now is built around Klipsch and TUBES!!!! with a little SS thrown in for the bass reproduction not what Stereo@#%$ recommends. To bad they can't review a Khorn or La Scala...guess they don't cost enough to warrant a reviiew,or horns are to colored to review or WHATEVER the excuse of the day is!!!! Who is this guy,I missed this one, would have saved me alot of money, time and frustration...not to mention that Klipsch sound I love so dearly. This article is old as someone said...wished I would have seen it as I was an avid Stereo@#%$ addict. Like another member said OVIOUSLLY they havent changed their format much(can't say because I have'nt read them in @3yrs)but maybe there is hope for the future? A great post IMHO and hits home for me...I'M BACK folks and lovi'n it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greg
  10. Kool I'm not the only one,my ex said I was wierd...she'll never understand,I guess thats why I use the term EX!!! Greg
  11. I would like to add that if I chose the passive route I would definately check some people out on this forum as they are well versed in getting the best out of a passive unit paired with Klipsch speakers. I might still go that route...never know but gotta play with what I have for now. Greg
  12. Luckly I have gain controls on both of my bass amps as well as the Rane 2way and have alot of control...I hate attenuating anything and prefer to do it to the bass, the mids/highs get a straight thru signal, dont want to mess with that range of freq.So far its pretty good. Greg
  13. I have to agree with all the fussing,I have had my setup for about a week and still trying to dial it all in.I'm close but not there yet,I am having fun but feel like I am chasing my tail sometimes. But overall I think my configuration is better than before....I'm learning to turn down the gain to the low drivers, that bass plays havoc with the mids if it's out of proportion at all. Greg
  14. I only need to know 2 buttons on my remote and they relate to volume!
  15. Cant do that no more, work and all them sample bottles that just might have your name on one!!!!
  16. Has anyone ever listened to music in the dark?...no lights or anything on except our pride and joy music machines! All I will say to any naysayers is...can a blind man hear? Try it sometime, you might just get closer to the music...after all that is what this is all about right? Greg
  17. Hello, I am currently using an active 2way xover(Rane) My reasons for this are my current system conf. and the associated power losses with passives. My system is configured as follows: I am running a La Scala 2 way utilizing an Altec 511b/902 driver combo for the highs ie.above 500hz,this is powered by Decware SE84CS SET monoblocks with @4 watts output.I wanted to have the most available power for this horn/driver.The amp is conected directly to the horn.Signals are divided before the amp with the Rane that has a Linkwitz/Riley 24db slope that ensures inphase outputs to the associated drivers. Here is a great article that gives you the pros and cons of using an active vs. passive xover. http://sound.westhost.com/bi-amp.htm Its a long read but will give you lots of info to make a sound choice! Greg
  18. Here is one to check out, might fit your your price range. The Ear would be able to tell you if this is a good fit for your situation. I think it would be,got a coulpe of them! with the same EQ/INTEGRATOR outboard and an outboard amp(mine are passive, this one has the amp/integrator onboard) Greg http://cgi.ebay.com/Bag-End-Infrasub-18-Powered-Subwoofer-New-Condition_W0QQitemZ7375098339QQcategoryZ47095QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  19. Any opinions? Tubes included! Greg http://cgi.ebay.com/Dared-VP-300B-SET-Power-Amp-NR_W0QQitemZ5841125815QQcategoryZ39783QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  20. Bob, Give a serious look! I have 2x18 passives with the same control/integrator...WOW Greg http://cgi.ebay.com/Bag-End-Infrasub-18-Powered-Subwoofer-New-Condition_W0QQitemZ7375098339QQcategoryZ47095QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  21. the system powered by a Bryston 4BPro amp.BagEnd's approach to low freq. reproduction is to take a sealed enclosure designed to have a resonent freq. at 60 hz which has a predictable roll off below that at 12db per octive(laws of physics), and use the ELF unit to provide gain in proportion to that roll off. This ELF also has a x-over which rolls off the high pass 12db per to the mains. My system is configured as follows(soon to change with addition of 511B/902 in 2way operation).A Mark Levinson #39 player connected to the ELF integrator/x-over, lows going to Bryston 4B/2 x18in. BagEnd passive subs and the highs to my Shannling EL34 50 watt monoblocks driving my La Scala's. This is the best bass I have ever heard in my system and I have been running Velodynes for 15 years w/La Scala's.Yes its new and I want to like it,I know all about that dark road and feel I am beyond that.REALLY...LOL. I have obsessed over this bass issue since my first pair of La Scala's in 1985 and I have heard/owned a few different subs.I would say Velodyne is the best I have heard till now... This is amazing, very defined with impact at low volumes.I always find myself turning it up to get that untill now.The BagEnd's seem to add to the dynamics of the system without getting in the way...like some subs I have owned. There is alot of signal information down low that adds ambience to the presentation(IMHO).They seem to integrate reallly well with the La Scala's.They are sealed enclosures like the La Scala's.Sound is fast and detailed, lots of pitch definition, no one note bass here,a quallty I enjoy about the La Scala's.Time to turn it up.... Wow...can you say impact, yes they are 2 x18's in the corners. It better have it.Better yet it's very detailed and defined and blends seamlessly with the mains, the couch I'm sitting on is vibrating, things are falling off the walls(just the poorly attached absorbtion panels for side reflections). This is crazy, never heard this kind of dynamics to the presentation(the Velodyne did it,but not like this)yes 2x18 does alot. The Bryston amp dedicated to this SUB SYSTEM vs. a plate amp probably helps the presentation. If I could'nt see the subs I would not know they are there.Having 2 subs helps as they x-over kind of high with the ELF integrator(95hz).I have always set the x-over on my subs at about 70hz for the La Scala's and was worried about the higher x-over point but everything sounds awsome.Ideally I would like to get the full benifit of the La Scala's range(lots of roll off at 60hz).I have thought that localization of the bass started at about 70hz and I would hear(feel) the difference, oviously not so with 2 of these 18's, with 1 sub you would probably be able to localize the sound.I say that because the presentation is so clean. Am I impressed...yes,is it less distorted than a Velodyne, not on paper/rated spec.but damn it sounds good, the way it blends with the La Scala's is as good yet better in many ways.I like tube amps on the La Scala's and they are totally distorted compared to SS spec's but sound better IMHO,so it doesnt have the servo control to reduce distortion,I can tell a little difference,I have to say the Velodyne may sound a little cleaner but distortion may be over rated(can't believe I just said that),these subs are more distorted than a Velodyne on paper, in my system there is a different sound vs Velodyne for the better I believe. Disclaimer LOL: I have only tried to pass on to you my expieriences with BASS and my new setup.I don't think this is the cats meow for everyone(unless you own La Scala's)I am not a profressonal reviewer and my spelling might be off at times(I do try). Here is a list of music listened to(not all) Candlebox(first one,no album name) Works of art mastered by audioqest(very good recording) Patricia Barber/Modern Cool Extreme/3sides Doors/Greatest hits Nickelback/All the right reasons(new lots of GOOOOOD bass) Stevie Ray/Sky is crying Metalica/Black cover Lyle Lovett and his LARGE band(this one is VERY good) Velvet Revolver/Contraband a disc called RHYTHMcountryand BLUES(XXXWOW) Creed/My own Prison Scorpions/Best of Poco/Legacy Heart/Greatest Hits + many more this is what was stacked in front of me when typing this. Well I have been typing for too long, hoped you liked my little BagEnd vs. Velodyne shoot out.Velodyne makes a good product but for me I like what's goin on with these BagEnds Greg
  22. Charlie, Saw your post,I am interested, contact me thru PM,looking to getting into SET for my LaScalas on the horns in a bi-amp configuration. Greg
