  1. Will opening the speaker myself void the warranty? I once opened my brothers cd changer to pull out his discs before it went in for sevice. They charged him for the repair and said it had been opened up, yada yada. And if I do open it up is there anything that I need to know first? Short wires, etc.? Thanks for the input.
  2. I was wondering if any one has had any problems with their RF-7's? Mine are only a few months old, and I already have a woofer that is not working. It has no sound at all. All the other woofers are fine, it is just the one.
  3. I agree, I wish my wife said thaat also. As I read on in the threads I realized that you were using an oil finish. The cab. maker is right! I belive that I read something about 200 grit paper? Way too fine! I realized it was oil when you said you were having weeping problems. And I have never heard of Linseed Oil refered to as BLO. But then again I just learned that EVO was Ex. Virgin Olive Oil! The finer you sand wood, the more you close the grain. In an oil finish you need open grain for penitration. And he is also right about the weather. Oils are very hard too apply in cold, and also damp weather conditions. I use Bio-tec, an oil finish from Germany. I bought a case when I used to be a sales rep. for a wood flooring co. out of Germany. Very few people request it though. Poly's have taken over. Sound like you already got good advise, so you don't need me. Good luck again with your project. Remember "Just say no to Rugs!"
  4. Try light sannding between each coat with about 150 grit, this will knock down the popped grain, as well as give each coat of finish something to grab. But almost always Oak, Red or White, will pop the grain when appling and type of finish, just natural with an open grain wood. If you do start over and take it down to bare wood again, after you have done your finish sanding, try rubbing your wood down with denatured alcohol. It will pop the grain, then finish sand again, it will keep the following finish layers from popping dramaticly. I have never used the finish that you are talking about, but I have been prof. installing and re-finishing hardwood floors for about 15 years now. My cousins own a custom cabinet shop, and they have me come lend a hand all the time. Give me more info about your project, mainly the finish BLO that you are useing. I would like to know exactly what it is. My choice on alot of projects is Last n Last Grand, a Oil-H2o mix product out of New York. Great stuff!! I am currently working on a wood flooring Nautical inlay that we are hopeing to enter into the National Wood Flooring Assoc. contest. Alot of work with Can. Maple, Hon. Mahogany, and a variety of Braz. Cherry cuts (quarter sawn etc.) This is our first entry, so a top ten finish would make us really happy. Wish us luck with our project, as I wish you luck with yours. Sorry for rambling, but i get excited when It comes to wood.
  5. You dont ever see the glue, but the materials are so thin that, trust me the glue residue is there. It begins to atract dust, and you get lines that you can not make go away. Stapleing also alows for easier corrections while you are working with the material. If you find that you have stretched the grain too far in area and not enough in another, you can pull your staples, and re-adjust the fabric. If you are using th foam type fabric, glue them.
  6. I did a set of older refubished JBL's, (before I was turned on to Klipsch). I also refinished the cabinets, but thats another story. The trick is to staple, and stretch at the same time. Most of the fabrics have a grain. align the grain so that it is even with the edge on one side staple that crap out of it . then stretch tthe other side evenly, you will then understand why you use so many staples! No puckering, or uneven grain. (Grain is the straight line of holes in the fabric) The big question is your corners! fold or stretch? If you can do a good fold and cut, it will look alot better than stretching the corners, stretching will pull the grain out of wack! Take your time and the will end up looking factory. NO GLUE! Glue will soak throught the fabric, and collect dust! When I took my speakers in to my local JBL shop, for crossover work, the reapir guy stated that he never new that JBL had made Decade 36's in black! When I told him that I had done the work myself, he dropped his jaw! He said that he had never seen a re-finish turn out this good. He wanted to know how I got the finish so smooth! Hardwood flooring trick of the trade! And the grills were tips that my Uncle had taught me! Take your time!!
  7. This is driving me crazy!!! I just spent another hour on the phone with another moron in the tech dept. at Dish Network. He claimed that he had fixed the problem by down loading the new software to my rec. Half an hour after hanging up it shut down again!!! This is B.S.!! And the HD programs suck!!
  8. Hey thanks for the advise! I think I will give it a try! Take my time, the screws that are holding it in are phillips head, so it sounds like I have just saved 3 hours and 15 min. Glueing the frames first is a great idea, that is what I saw as being the key problem with allignment! Next question, are all foam surrounds the same? Is there a brand that I should look for? And do any last longer than others? Thanks Guys!!!
  9. Just wondering how hard it is to install new foam on my speakers. Is it as simple as the repair kits say it is, or should I leave it to a pro? I have a set of speakers, we leave the brand name out since we are being bashed lately for talking about non-Klipsch speakers, that I would like to run in my office. The foam on the radiators are shot!! I know it is fixable, but I need to know how hard. Also, do you have to remove the cones? Advise and tips please! Thanks!!!
  10. Just wondering how many of you guys have Dish HD Receivers? And have you had problems with them shuting down on you? I am getting sick of having to reset my box 2-3 times a day. They have sent me a new box and it does the same thing! My neighbor has the same problem. I am wondering if it is the area I live in (So. Cal.), or if everyone is having the same problem?
  11. Hey, I have to let you know that I would like to purchace 1 lottery ticket!! What a great job! I have been working on my house know for seven years! 5 projects at once right now. Ktchen, Theater, Two kids bedrooms, and the back yard. I would be content to just work on the theater, but I have a wife that likes to start me on several projects, and then complain because nothing is done. So I know how excited you must be to have finished such a grand project! Congrats!!! And by the way the Detroit Sweater is the perfect touch!!!
  12. Thank you! Your stories of misfortune are makeing me feel alot better!!!!
  13. It always happens right after the warranty runs out! I lucked out this time, my sub was still under it's ext. warranty! But it still hurts, alot!! Good thing is now I pretty much have an all new sub! New amp., and now a new woofer. But the bad thing is that I was hopeing that they couldn't fix it the first time, and that they would have me upgrade! I read an earlier thread that the guy had dropped his heritage down a flight of stairs! Ouch!!!
  14. My sub has been in the shop for about 3 1/2 weeks, getting a new amp put in it. I seems like a lifetime without it. But I got the call that it was in today!! Great I've got the day off, I'm gonna play allday! I pick it up, bring it home, hook it up, and it sounds like crap!!! Not just bad, really bad! I couldn't figure it out. I flip it on it's back, and find out that in transit, some moron used a dolly to move it. They shoved the dolly right through the speaker, a five inch gash! I could stick my hand in the hole!!!! Iv'e now got another 2 weeks min. before I will get it back. This sucks! Anybody got horror stories that will help me feel better? Other peoples misfortunes make me feel better about mine!
  15. Hey, you guys have pretty much answered my question! I am not looking to spend a ton of money on a CD player. I am looking for a way to kill two birds with one stone. My CD player is very old, and I have over 300 CD's that get shuffled around the room, it's quite a mess. Both the Sony 400 and the Pioneer Elite have great features, I was most concerned about load time and overall operation. Sounds like those who are using them love them, so it's off to the store for me. Thanks a bunch!!!
  16. It's time to pick up a new CD player. Question is Single drawer, or multi disc changer, like the 300+ jukebox. Anyone had any problems or advise. Storage is one of the reasons that I am looking into a change. Looked at the Pioneer Elite and a Sony. But not sure?
  17. I need to pick up a new CD player. I have looked at several options, Disc changers, cd recorders, SACD player (but I will get that with the new DVD player my wife is going to get from me for Christmas, always thinking of others!) Does anyone love or hate their disc changers, and why. And do you have any recomended brand and models? I dont want to fight a changer, but we have run out of storage area for all of the music. I was thinking it might solve my problem. I looked at the Pioneer Elite and the Sony (400 cds). But just want some feed back, Thanks!!!
  18. I agree, you are smokin crack!!! The reason you are hearing such a big diff. is that you have lowered the resistance! But you would have had the same results using Moster Z Cable, wired single. The only time it is going to really pay off, is if you are Bi-amping. And if you can afford to do that, then I coming to your house for a party. Beers are on you!!!
  19. Listend to RF-7's, shopped around, listend to RF-7's, shopped around, went back and listend again, and pulled out the wallet! It depends on what you listen to, and how you listen to it. Soft Jazz and Classical at a volume level that will keep the wife happy? Go buy some Monitor Silver, or dump a little more a get their Gold Series. Many of my friends that keep their nuts in their wifes hand bags have very, very nice monitor systems. Very nice! I on the other hand run my house. And when I don't want to here what she has to say, I turn it up! Past loud! Some Rev. Horton Heat shuts her up quick! And the RF-7's just keep giving and giving! Screaming for more! If you are going to Rock out with your c*** out, go with the RF-7's!!!! But you don't have to pay full price, everyone is right! Around $800.00 bucks, which leaves room for the new CD's, some great classic vinyl and alot of beer!!!
  20. Just to chime in on this debate. You have to remember that you are dealing with power. The heavier the guage the less resistance there is for the power to travel. You can not shove all 100,000 people going into the Rose Bowl, down the same tunnel at the same time. The same therory behind electrical cords. Ever try and use a thin gauge electrical cord with a compressor? It heats up if you travel too far. It can not carry the load. If you are only pushing 65w or less 16g lamp cord goes up against anyones $3.00 per foot cord! But if you start to move into the 100w game you are going to need to increase your gauge to a min. of 14g. Some, but few benifits of name brand cable. But when you start moving into 120w plus 12g name brand wires are a must. I did a test for myself using Monster Z cable vs. standard Monster 14g wire. Using the A-B selector, I wired up my speakers. Hands down the Z cable blows it away. Besides being able to push the signal without effort, it is time sensitive. Multi-gauge strands to push the bass and treble so they arive at the same time. Worth every penny. But when I Bi-wired, I noticed no diff.!!! Period! None! Ziltch! Not with my ears. I think the only people that can truly hear a diff., are those who have systems that cost as much as my house. And they only hear it because Jerry, Their system designer says so! But don't get me wrong, IT LOOKS COOL!
  21. Have you set the perameters for the center channel. I found that when I had hooked up my RC7 that I was having the same result. I was told to play around. So I first played with setting the center to small, and large. It sounds better at large. Then I set the EQ for the center, increasing the bass and treb. I do not know if your Yamaha has that option, but it worked great. I was told that the receivers were set up for a much smaller center. We do not have a smaller center. They are concerned with it overpowering the rest of the set up, so they factory set it a little flatter than the rest. I went home and tried what I was told to do, the above, and it is just about as perfect as I can get it. Good Luck, let me know if it works!
  22. Just a few to check out............ Queen DVD......picture sucks!!! but it's re-mastered in DTS 96/24, sounds out of this world!!!! ACDC Live DVD.......Old, from The Mosters of Rock in Europe. 5.1 Dolby, I didn't know that I could crank it up that loud!! Made our ears ring. Sounds Great!! Picture Sucks!!!! I am looking for a few other good ones. Freinds told me to pick up both Alice and Chains Unplugged, and Nirvana Unplugged DVD's. Anyone check these out yet? Or does anyone have any good picks?
  23. Great choice on speakers!!! My RF-7's have never let me down! My sub is in the shop, and I can say that I don't really miss it. O.K. I miss it alot, like a kidney! But the 7's hold up well with out it. Enjoy!!! In my opinion, you need a reciver that fits your needs, and do not settle for anything else. Make a list of the things you want and go for it! I went Yahmaha RXZ-1. Great receiver!! I looked at Pioneer, and Denon, but fell in love when they turned on the Yahmaha! A top notch piano manufacturer knows music, and they have nailed natural sound. If I had the extra money, I still think I would have choosen the same receiver. They have great units starting at around $800, and you can move up from there. Have fun!!
  24. Hey Mike- I had been shopping for headphones for awhile. Everything costs way too much for the way they sound! My wife was shopping for crap, and I got dragged along with her. I found a BOSE store, I hate BOSE!!! But they do make a great set of headphones!!! You can get the Noise cancelling for around $300, or you can get the Non-NC for around $130. I went with the later, and I am very happy!! I listen to my music so loud that they are nise cancelling anyway! Great bass, very, very clear! Outrageous for PS2 games also, didn't know that there were German soldiers hidding behing a wall, but I could here them whispering! Blew me away, actually I blew them away, but go check them out. Very affordable, I give them 2 thumbs up when it comes to price vs. sound!
  25. I am looking to start spending some cash on rear speakers. I am planning on going with RF5's for L & R, and the RS7 for the RC. Of course I am looking for any coments on this set up, but here is my real question: How important is spending big cash on the rear sub? I have heard alot about running a less expensive sub in the rear, but I have dropped alot of cash so far, and still have alot more to spend, I don't want to waste any money on a great sub if it isn't needed. Nor do I want to go cheap, if it going to make a big diff. Help me out!
