  1. Okay, I've done a few searches and I've come up snake eyes. I'm looking for the really soft squishy foam that we've all seen around some of the high end speaker cables. I've looked for it in the Parts Express Catalog and done a search via google. Any suggestions? Thanks all, Bill Woodward
  2. I'm the first to admit I know relatively nothing about subs. Usually when I know so little about any subject it's my nature to learn as much as I can. I've read quite a bit on this site a few others,...and I've taken up about half an hour of a salesman's time at one of my local hi end HiFi shops in town. It's so difficult to learn something from someone who makes their living,..selling. No doubt it's an honorable way to make a living, but as with all my HiFi gear I've always tried to get as much bang for my buck, this usually means used equipment. I really wanted to get a sub for my upstairs system. (my main pride and joy) So, the other day I picked up a Carver/Sunfire original MKII sub. I've always liked Bob Carver's gear in that he's a bit of a renagade and many times delivers higher end sound for less than competitor's products. I'm going to do a bit more tweaking, but now I do understand the difference between "Boomey" and "Punchy" sub bass sound. I got a pretty good deal on this sub and at one point in time I may upgrade, but for the moment I'm happy with what I've got. This little sub with it's 2700 watt amp. puts out ajustable bass that one can make "Boomey" in theatre mode and fairly tight bass in the music mode. I do have much more to learn, but $425.00 was about right to me for what I got. Regards, Bill Woodward
  3. I know I could do a search and find some more information but this place is such a wealth of knowledge. I just picked up little sub made by Carver/Sunfire. (used) It's a MarkII 2700 Watt sub and so far I love it but I am unsure how to go about setting the crossover point. I have it working with a McIntosh C11 Pre, a Dynaco ST70 Amp, and a pair of La Scalas. Thanks in advance, Bill Woodward
  4. I'm glad you've found your nervana! The best advice I've ever received,...Take some time, read, and learn about HiFi BEFORE you go and spend your hard earned money. The advent of multi channel systems and the buying craze has a lot of high quality gear made many years ago, real bargans. Honestly, this site is a harbor in a storm of media bologna that says good sound only comes from spending huge money. This site is a great place,... Regards, Bill Woodward
  5. The best part about this web site is that it bucks the school of thought that says one has got to dump megabucks into a HiFi system to get high quality sound. The same is true for the Dynaco ST70, most all tube gear made by Scott, and several other manufactures. For slightly less than five hundred dollars over a three year period, including the purchase price, I believe I'd have to spend three to four thousand dollars to equal the sound of my lightly modified ST70. (and it's been a real education and a lot of fun to boot!) I have a old McIntosh C11 tube pre amplifier that I feel the same way about. (not to mention my completely redone Scott 299D) It's all out there, one just has to read and learn a little bit. Regards, Bill Woodward
  6. Thanks Piranha, but I've tried a search on THIS the Kilpsch forums and cannot find "arf228" and I also tried a basic search on the Audiokarma site but cannot find him there either. Part of the problem is that both site only allow you to do what I would call a "Basic" search in that it will only search ONE of the sub forums on their site. (Unless I'm not in the know on how) Any other ideas on how I can find this guy? Bill I appreciate the tip Fairchild but this guys cabnets don't look so hot to me. (Just not what I'm looking for) I'm going to try Piranha's tip on finding the guy on Audiokarma.com hopefully it will be the man. Thanks again all, Bill Woodward
  7. AudioKarma, I'll give it a try. The cabnet I saw was so nice it really caught my attention. (I guess not enough for me to get his name then!) I'll do the search, thanks for the lead. Bill Woodward
  8. Hello all: Recently I saw an ad, (don't remember where) for a guy who will build new cabnets for Scott 299D's as well as some other models. They were very nice looking and had wooden slats built into the top of the cabnet rather than a metal cage of some kind. Anyone know who or where I can get in touch with this guy. I want ot mave him make one for my 299D. Thanks, Bill Woodward

  10. I just hooked up my "New" Scott 299D (completely redone by Charlie at Vacuum Tube Valley) and I'm just blown away with the clairity, the gutsey bass, (as compared to my ST70) and I never knew how to hear what the audio reviewers called "Tight," both bass and overall sound wise, but now I do. I've never owned or listened to the megabuck systems except in my local high end Hi Fi shop, but to me this is about as good as it gets in the real world. I listened to Diana Krall, Best of Simon and Garfunkel, AC/DC Back in Black, Miles Davis, kind of blue, and Joni Mitchell, Hits. Everything sounded miles ahead of my Dynaco ST70 and Carver C4000 pre amp. (Overall sound was no better then my Dynaco ST70 with my McInotsh C11 Pre, but the bass was noticably better with the Scott I guess because of the 7591 tubes verses the EL84s in the Dynaco) Charlie Kittelson at Vacuum Tube Valley told me my 299D was made in 1963 or 1964. These guys had it so right all those years ago, it's difficult to see how many more years, (and how much more money) it took them to equal this kind of sound with solid state gear. I will be buying more Scott products, even if they're old to have them redone. It's got to be one of the best values in sound out there. Thrilled, Bill Woodward
  11. Last year I was in exactly the same spot you are in now. I got a lot of good advice and I found a very nice original Dynaco ST70 and a old McIntosh C11 Pre amplifier. Now I'm the first to admit that I'm a neophite interms of two channel stereo, but hooked into my La Scalas it sounds out of this world. My opinion. But the guy from one of my local high end hi fi shops has come over to the house and told me he understands why I went the route I did when looking for the best sound I could find,...for the money. Total cost $2100.00. Then I found a very nice Rega Planet and I just can't see how a guy could go wrong,...for the money. Recently I had a Scott 299D completely redone by Charlie at Vacuum Tube Valley. What a great integrated amp/pre!! There's so many good deals if a guy is trying to put together a nice system and is on a budget. This site is a wealth of information for someone who seeks good to great sound and is on a budget. Good luck, Bill Woodward
  12. Keep them happy,...I THOUGHT they were relatively happy until the other day when I got a "Nastygram" waiting for me when I got home form work. As it turns out they just thought I had a bit too loud for a short time when I got up every morning at 0400. I went out between the houses and listened to it and could barely hear it. So I asked her to go into her bedroom and tell me if she thought it was too loud. She came back to the door and told me she could still hear it but it didn't sound too loud. I told her I would not turn it up past this level any morning before I went to work and this was all I could do. She was not happy, but I had to hold my ground. Needless to say she will not even look at me anymore. Oh well,... Bill woodward
  13. Hello all: I don't want to open a can of worms on my lack of understanding but here goes anyway. One of my systems consists of a Dynaco ST70 that had been out of service until I recently had tunbes4hifi.com install his new board on it. I just got it back, (see my thread on the great Roy did on my old Dynaco) and I wanted to try it out before I had a chance to wire it in with an old McIntosh C11 tube pre amp it had been woring with. Sooooo, I plugged it in with a Carver C4000 solid state pre amplifier I have. (and love) It sounds great but does one lose most or all of the benifits of a tube amplifier when you integrate it with a solid state pre amplifier? Is there a "Burn in" time for a amplifier with all new tubes? Thanks, Bill Woodward
  14. P.S. I hope it's not aganist the rules of the site to post a shameless plug for a vendor who I have had good dealings with.
  15. While I was in College I worked in a biomedical research lab, with baboons. (Papio anubus) It's a long story and I won't bore you but the long and short of it is that I have been around all sorts of sub human primates and let me tell you chimps can be bloody vicious! Not the cute little things dressed up like humans most people think of. The biggest part of working with or socializing with any primate is letting them become used to you. This is true in the lab and in the wild. A new person in a group of primates is nothing more then a threat and like all primates, humans included, if they see you as a real threat they may just go nuts. Working with those baboons all those years ago taught me so much about human nature, it was a real experience. Bill Woodward
  16. Just short note to let everyone know about a guy named Roy Mottram who operates a site tubes4hifi.com and sells new boards partially finished and fully finished with tubes primarially from ebay. He lives in the Seattle area and he let me drive up from Portland, Oregon where I live to drop off my ST70 for him to work on. My girlfriend and I went shopping for about three hours and he installed the borad with tubes and set the bias on a new "Stuffed Board" for my beautiful old Dynaco. I just got home and the old Dynaco soulds like a million bucks. (Well maybe like about four thousand bucks!) He sells a great product and charges a more than fair price, and he's a heck of a nice guy too. He even fixed a few little things I didn't ask him to. Needless to say I've very happy with the work he did. Order from this guy with confidence. Bill Woodward
  17. Very cool that you guys should be such a wealth of information, I really appreciate this site. Bill Woodward
  18. Man, I love you guys! You guys have been a big help, now if I could only get the poor overworked bloke who runs SEB to get back with me on constructing a pair of cables to go between either my Dynaco ST70 or my Scott 299D. (both the same spade size on the amp. side as my La Scalas) Any Takers? Seriously, the information I've received from this site is the kind of real world audio I want to be involved in. Once again much thanks guys, Bill Woodward
  19. Okay guys I have no pride because once and for all I'm going to ask a question I've been too dumb to ask before. It all started when I wanted to get a new pair of speaker cables made for my La Scalas. I thought I read somewhere on this site that the spade size that would fit the screws in original type La Scala crossovers, (I have AA in mine) is a "Number eight" size. When I told a prospective maker he seemed stumped in that he only wanted to know the measurement of the spade. Bottom line "Number eight" spade meant nothing to him....I let it go not wanting to order something that might end up not fitting. Now a new thread starts about someone who wants to get a new set of speaker cables made. SEB labs was recommended and I went to ebay just as the thread said and sent SEB an email telling him I wanted to have a set of cables made for my La Scalas. He wrote back that he "Thought" the La Scala "Barrier strips use a number eight screw, please vefify." Jeeze I feel dumb! I've been expecting someone who would make me a new set of speaker cables to KNOW what size spade or what size screw the La Scala barrier strip uses! PLEASE once and for all let me know what size the screws are in a stock La Scala barrier stip are and what size spade I will need to request to get the cables I want. Thanks all,... Bill Woodward
  20. I'm sorry, I took it for granted that most of the people on this site would have a pair of fairly efficient speakers, and such may or may not be the case. I'm no real expert but if your speakers are 90db or better efficient this Scott will be more than enough to drive them. I have a pair of Kilpsch KP301, (professional 3 way) speakers and they're 101db and my La Scalas are 104db and 35 watts, (rated) of Dynaco ST70 will give anyone more gain than they need. I would love to snap this amp. up but there's just no place for me to put it! Bill Woodward

OK there. Big points (way more than for the usual bossa nova) for Cuban music on the Klipsch Forum! Who said miracles didn't happen..... C&S ---------------- Love the stuff! Ruben Gonzalez is outstanding on "Introducing" and Toda Cuba Baila Con Chucho Valdes & Irakere is tops. I also like the Afro Cuban All Stars on "A Toda Cuba le Gusta." Listening to this stuff through my La Scalas is as close to Audio heaven as I ever want to get. Regards, Bill Woodward
  22. For those of you who aren't big Scott fans this is a great buy. The LK72 is the kit version of the 299 integrated amp. Knowing it's been redone buy someone who knows Scott's, it's a real bargan. (No I don't know Tommy) : ) If it wasn't for the fact that I am about to recieve a completely redone 299D from Charlie at Vacuum Tube Valley I'd snap this up in a New York Minute! Between 28 and 31 WPC of much stronger than the numbers indicate warm tube power. Damm, if I only had another room in my house for another Hi Fi system,.... Bill Woodward
  23. I was sitting right next to my ST70 listening to Buena Vista Social Club working on my computer, (there's no sound on my computer!) and out of my Klipsch KP301s came a low "Hum" that very slowly began to get louder and louder. I looked up and glanced over at my Dynaco to see one of the Ram Tube Works EL34's beginning to glow cherry red. I quickly turned off the amp. That's my dramatic story of a good tube gone bad! : ) Bill Woodward
  24. Hi Guys: I was e mailing with a guy from this site,...I think he lives in New York and is attending or attended medical school who makes some outstanding speaker cables. I wanted to send him some small copper spades, (the size that will fit in the limited space provided on La Scala crossovers) and have him put together a pair of cables for me.) Any help greatly appreciated, Thanks again guys, Bill Woodward wjwoodie@aol.com (please reference this on the subject line or I'll erase it,... : )
  25. I've been a fan of Bob Carver's for a few years, he's always been a renagade...I've had quite a few pieces of his stuff including some Phase Linear too. I still think his C4000 pre amp with two twenty watt amps built into it for background delay speakers is a very good sounding pre amp and a lot of fun to play with as well. That being said, Bob Carver is a very weird individual... Bill Woodward
