  1. Hey 76Scala, nice to know you're in Forest Grove,...but are you saying you have RCA 7199s? I'm going to pick up a new matched quad of EL34s (JJ) and a Rectifier today and while I'm at it I'm going to shake the bushes at another pal of mine's shop to see if I might be able to find a couple of 7199s I can come close to matching, if I run out of luck I' might just be willing to break down and go for the RCA 7199s,...IF you have them. I appreciate the feedback everyone, this site has been a wealth of information for the kind of Hi Fi I want to be involved with. Bill Woodward
  2. Hello All: Everyone on board here have has given me some get information in the past so I thought I'd throw this one out and see what you guys threw back at me. One of my Hi Fi systems is driven by a Dynaco ST70 and I need to find some decent 7199 tubes, (2) for replacements. (ANYTHING but SOVTEK tubes) I've not only had bad luck with Sovteks but I think they sound very poorly on my system. For those who have suggestions please list a supplier and a rough cost so I might pursue your suggestion(s). Thanks in advance, Bill Woodward
  3. I personally have not tried any other Mapleshade products but pal of mine has installed the heavyfeet on a old pair of Altec speakers and the Mapleshade heavyfeet are top notch interms of their quality. I want to have the front of my La Scalas about two and a half inches high and the rear about a half inch high and this fits with what Mapleshade offers. They also offer some cool brass spun "Domes" called furniture savers that slip over the heavtfoot spikes that are cheap enough so that I'll be ordering them as wel to see how they work. I'll let you guys know, Bill Woodward
  4. Thanks guys, I'm assuming that you then used the AR interconntcts Craig at NOS Valves recommended. Believe me I'm hip on not spending any more that I have to especially knowing I have a couple of extra pair of very high quailty 75ohm digital interconnects with Neutrik RCA connections that I assembled waiting in the wings. If I had the amp I would simply try them, but I hate to wait until the amp arrives only to find out what I have won't work. No I have not purchased the DH Labs BL-1 interconnects he recommends/sells. I'm sure they're fine interconncts but I still don't want to to drop another $119.00 for two meters unless I have to. What's everyone else who own Scott 299 gear doing? Thanks again, Bill Woodward
  5. Hello All: I am about to recieve a Scott 299D that I purchased sight unseen that has been completely redone by the same Scott Expert that I purchased it from. He mentioned that I might have the same issue with interconnects that I have had, (and solved) with my Dynaco ST70 in that the interconnect jacks are too close together for many modern interconnect jacks built today. He has offered to sell me some but I have some very high quality digital interconnects (CD being my primary playing method) that I have made with Neturik jacks and I don't want to have to buy more. What are the rest of you using? Any suggestions? Thanks, Bill Woodward
  6. Thanks Rick, One of my main isues is that I would like to raise both speakers up slightly with the front of each speaker being slightly higher than the rear. "Grippers" eh'? What are they and how high would they raise the speaker off the floor? Thanks again, Bill Woodward
  7. I'm wondering how thick the plywood is on my La Scalas because I'd like to purchase some of the brass Mapleshade "Heavyfeet" to screw into the bottom of my speakers. I'm looking at the self tapping woodscrews Mapleshade offers but I'd like to aviod screwing them into plywood that's so thin the plywood falls appart on my mint La Scalas. Any advice? Thanks again. Bill Woodward
  8. Great post. A couple of years ago my Brother sent me a link to a fellow who I believe was a design audio engineer at McIntosh for many years. He went to the trouble of starting a web site to let everyone know about the "Snake Oil" many of the audio vendors are selling us all in the way of speaker cables. One need not be an audio engineer to see that NO ONE can change the laws of Physics. These are "Fighting words" to so many people because many people have spent small fortunes on speaker cables! Bottom line, cable/speaker manufactures have perverted an industry and thus the listening pleasure of millions of people. Flame on folks, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  9. Man, I love you guys! I went through this thread and drove over to Best Buy and found a Toshiba 3960, (24/192 sampling) and it was priced at 69.95, went to the register and bought it for 49.95! I figured even if it was a pile of crap how could a guy go wrong at 49.95!? I can't believe anyone says anything bad about this little player. No matter what one says about this little player you MUST follow it up with the fact that it costs 49.95! I have loved my Rega Planet, mind it's a bit past it's prime, but this little 50.00 player makes my Rega sound cheap. Now I can only hope that the manufactures will take heed and put together a decent 24/192 that will come in under $500.00 I'm going over to Best Buy and pick up another one. My La Scalas never sounded so good! Thanks guys, Bill Woodward
  10. Thanks, especially "D Man," one of the things I'm most interested in is what size spades are being used. I find it a bit difficult to get a good connection on my La Scalas given the same "Standard" size spades "D Man" is using. I'd like to be able to find some nice small copper spades that will be a perfect fit for my La Scalas. Regards, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  11. Hello All: There's such a wealth of information and opinions here I've just got to know what some of you folks use for speaker cables and spades. I don't mind if there's some hi end/big buck examples but of course I's also like to know, (and see) what others use so I can get a pair for my new La Scalas. Thanks, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  12. My dos centavos: I'm surprized no one thought about "Blue Jeans Cable." I'm alway up for a do it yourself project providing the tools needed aren't too spendy, but shot of the DIY I really don't believe Blue Jeans Cable can be beat. (for the money) Google "Blue Jeans Cable." Regards, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  13. Hello All: I've had a pair of Klipsch KP 301's in my basement and I've loved them, (even though they're a bit on the homely side) for all types of music I enjoy. I just happened upon my deal of the decade in that a friend just lined me up with an old fella who bought a pair of La Scalas in the mid eightys. Even though it sounds too good to be true I recieved them in their original boxes and they look mint in every way. I'm astounded how good they could make birch plywood look. The number and dating code are as follows: 8663323 and 8663324 and they both have the letters "LS-BR". Could someone date they for me? Secondly, they both have AL crossovers and after I cleaned them up I hooked they up to a Naim 50 wpc solid state power amp and they both have the slightest little high frequescy "Hum" to them. They sound wonderful, but I'd like to track down the cause of the "Hum." I purchased a new set of AA crossovers from a nice fella on this site from Arkansas and I'm wondering if the "Hum" will go away with the new crossovers installed. Lastly I have an orogonal Rega Planet CD player that is vuite well isolated with spikes, ect. ect. ect.. Recently it had begun to skip with I apply even a moderate amount of bass to ay one of the three systems in my home. I love the player but the skip is too much at this point. Does anyone know if this could be repaired/serviced without the coast being more than the thing is worth? Thank you in advance, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  14. Wow dean, mine have fuses to the tweeters on that can be viewed from the back through the screen, guess mine are the later serial numbers. I never drove them very hard,....I used the light meters on the Carver cubes as a reference. Not a problem in the world. In fact a buddy and I were listening to them last week, (some informal classical recordings) and we could hear sheet music's pages being turned. Lucky me...
  15. I'm no expert on DQ10s but I have a pair that I got from a fella I work with who bought them new along with Dahlquist's "Passive Matrixing" crossover with their 13 inch 400 Watt passive sub. They were new in their original boxes. I had to have the woofers refoamed, (professionally) and other than a slight marr on the wood of one of the DQ10's they are as new. I'm told Dahlquist recommended at least 165 watts for DQ10's so I used one of two Carver M400 "Cubes" I had sent up to Rita at Carver/Sunfire to be completely reworked and burnt in before she sent them back to me. Then someone told me one couldn't even begin to explore DQ10's unless you're running at least 200+ watts,....Sooooo, I bridged my two Carver M400 "Cubes" at it really woke them up! I have a motive for borring you all to tears with my story,....Now that I have a pair of La Scalas, (about the same footprint at my DQ10's with the optional stands) I have no place for my beloved DQ10's! : ( I won't ship them but If anyone is interested in a coming to Portland, Oregon to pick up a BEAUTIFUL pair of DQ10's with the crossover and 400 watt pasive sub, (in MINT) condition I'll make you a heck of a deal on them. (You might even be able to talk me out of a better than new Carver "Cube" to drive them with) My dos centavos, Regards all. Bill Woodward aka 126Mhz Portland, OR. wjwoodie@aol.com (reference DQ10 under subject) P.S. interesting trades?
  16. Actually the klipsch logos for the front of La Scalas are $2.26 each, I ordered two this morning. Klipsch is a very responsive company. I'm applying a black veneer to my vintage La Scalas who's finish is a little beat. I got two new AA crossover networks from a nice fella named Bob from this site, and now two new Klipsch logos and my old La Scalas are like new! Regards, Bill Woodward aka 126Mhz Portland, OR.
  17. Seriously thanks you guys. What a luxury to be able to punch a few keys on your computer and get all this information in a matter of minutes. Regards,

  19. Thank you and Yes I have been to that page and I'm unable to get anything but the picture and brief description. What else can I do? Thanks again, Bill Woodward aka 126Mhz Portland, OR, P.S. I even try to go into "Details" but my arrow doesn't even turn into a hand as one would expect to allow me to open the "Details" menu.
  20. I've been to the Klipsch website, (not wanting to ask a question here that could be answered there) and I can pull up a picture and a BRIEF description of the La Scala, but no specifications. Any hints? I've like a fairly complete product specification. Regards, Bill Woodward aka 126Mhz Portland, OR.
  21. Hi Mike: Once again thanks for the information. 126Mhz is the precessional frequency of Hydrogen when it's exposed to a 3 Tesla magnetic field. I've been involved with NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) as it used to be called and MRI, (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) as it's now called since before it was a clinical imaging modality in hospitals. I used to work for General Electric Medical Systems teaching MRI which kept me on the road three hundred nights a year for almost eight years. Now I'm at a University in Portland scanning patients and doing a little research on the side. Now if I just knew of a place here in Portland that could veneer a pair of vintage La Scalas. Regards, Bill Woodward aka 126Mhz Portland, OR.
  22. Thank you Mike. It's very nice to have a resource to go to for information when I'm shy in it. It's really appreciated. Regards, Bill Woodward Portland, OR.
  23. Hello all: I was just able to pick up a pair of these monsters and I'd like a little information on them. Any help is greatly appreciated, Bill Woodward aka 126mhz Portland, OR.
  24. Thank you for the quick reply. Since last night when I hooked them into my old Dynaco Stereo 70 and PAS pre-amp I wired them in at 8ohms, but I wanted to make sure. I need to get them off the floor of my basement, at about half volume with the bass set at netural the KP301s will cause my Rega Planet to skip! Fantastic clairity of voices too,...The Best of Sade, just beautiful! Any ideas about the differences between the KP301(a) and KP301®? How old they might be, are they still making them? Thanks again, 126mhz Portland, OR.
  25. Hello all, I just picked up a unmatched pair of KP301 speakers. One is a KP301(A), and one is a KP301®. In a perfect world world I'd like to get an owner's manual but short of that: Are these 8ohm speakers? How old are they? Thank you, 126mhz Portland, OR.
