  1. Hey there, My amplification quest continues. After a few week long audition of NAD's Silver Line dual integrated, I've just come across someone who has a Phase Linear amp with a matching pre in great shape. Haven't got the model number yet, but he says it's 300+ watts. From the few reviews I've read, they seem to be pretty robust pieces with a lot of clean, Carver-power, but seem to be over kill with the Heritage. Any input that can be given will be HIGHLY appreciated. -F
  2. Dean G and others, I've been trying to follow this and other posts about crossovers, and, frankly, am quite lost. I feel bad asking here because I'm completely novice at this, so where can I read about how much and what sort of a difference changing the crossovers really make? To give you an indication of the sorts of questions that I have: - What effect does it have on the sound? - What are auricaps? - I think the network in my KHorns are Type AA's. How do they compare to the seemingly superior ALK's. Do the letters mean anything or are they simply model number? Sorry to break this interesting discussion up... would just like to be a part of it, or at least understand some of it! -F
  3. Hey there! Mine: 1) Black / Note: Jungle Music. Not classical in period, but very classy and talented: 2) Buck Clayton: Jam Sessions. Only heard vol 2 but man, oh man. 3) Herbie Mann: Jus Wailin. 4) Coleman Hawkins: Body and Soul (A Collection) 5) Charlie Haydn: Nocturn (Again, new, but ME-LLOWW! -F
  4. Doshi, Yes, you will most definitely hear a sonic difference in the speakers you mentioned as opposed to the KHorns. And I'm sure you'll find the difference better sounding also. However, the Rotel 1080, imho is not a very good match for these speakers. Having used them for a little while with my 71 Khorns, I just was not happy with their sound. Very tiring very quickly. Almost boomy. Regarding your reservation about not being able to afford tube amplification, I think there have been an enormous number of threads about inexpensive such amplifiers which might be a good place to start. Good Luck and buy them already! -F

  6. Great post! Personally, I'm still working on my first system... But I visited a friend the other day who had passed his stereo setup to his son. What a sad waste. He had a BEAUTIFUL pair of MC-30's with a 110 (I believe) as the pre. They were hooked up to an old pair of Snells (don't know the model.) It was sad enough that a bad cd of Terence Trent D'Arby (remember him?) was playing, and what's worse was it was playing in an old Pioneer Laser Disc Player (remember those?) Tips on how to convince my friend to pass on the electronics (minus the LD player, of course) to someone who would appreciate them more? -F
  7. Hey there! Just picked up his Jam Sessions Vol. 2 (couldn't find Vol. 1 yet) cd, and man can this boy play! I don't know much about him, nor had I heard any of his other stuff, but was a little (a LOT!) blown away by their pieces. Noticed Coleman Hawkins is part of the ensemble also. What are some of his others that are worth listening to that are still easy to find. -F

For some reason, in my mind, mono holds the same place in the hifi chain as multi-channel audio. Stereo just feels more natural (for lack of a better way to put it.) As for multi-channel audio, I don't know when it'll end. I'm sure, several years from now, we'll see the entry of 11.1 surround music. Mono, well seems kind of unintuitively retro. I'm sure both have their own charms, but I can't figure out what they are. What am I missing? -F
  9. It's been a loooooong time in coming but I finally did it! From newbie, to Cool Newbie, to.... err... Fast Newbie! Ok ok... not that impressive. But in celebration, let's have a totally and utterly useless contest that'll have no prize at the end of it whatsoever! Who out there has been, well, out there the longest? Most posts? Highest average daily posts? Most hate-mail posted in one day? This post is already claiming the prize for the most-unrelated-to-2-channel topic! -F
  10. I know it's nearly heresy (no pun intended) to recommend newer ss amps, but I love my NAD C230 Power amp with it's matching pre amp. Yes, it clips when really driven, but for moderate volumes, at about $400 for the brand new combo, I think it's a really good deal. Especially when you consider that the highs and mids they produce are fantastic. I've had them hooked up to my KHorns off and on for about 2 years now, and I'm very happy. Ofcourse when I pick up a pair of MC-30's sometime this summer, they'll probably never see the light of day again! -F

Although I can't help but shake the feeling that I may be doing something wrong. (Or at least my equipment is!) There seems to be no punch in live recordings. And I just can't seem to get an image of the music at all... Does this get better with tubes? -F

  15. BTW, what speakers are you planning on hooking these up to? Your Klipschorns? -F
  16. Gilbert, Just checked out your profile. Make sure you have a nice space on your rack for the 30's. They might get just a tad bit intimidated by your "2000 Watts of Krell Class A Amplificaton"!! Though they've been known to hold their own against the biggest and baddest of them! -F
  17. This is only kind of related... I've heard so much, especially on this forum about live music sounding so good on heritage speakers with the right amplification. On my Khorns, with numerous different powers amps (all SS, mind you) I have yet to encounter a good "Live" feel on any concert recording. Is it just me? I love the way music sounds on most studio tracks, but I have yet to find a live track that sounds realistic. And trust me, I've heard a ton of them, so it can't be just the recording. -F
  18. Randy, Your post is taken in the light that it was meant. You're absolutely right. There are many, many injustices and misfortunes in the world that (thankfully) we are not privy to witness, save for what we see on the news. I have been feeling for the Iraqi people ever since Saddam climbed the military ranks into his seat as a dictatorial ruler. And our company has also done a lot in the form of huge donations of food products through the World Food Program over the years. The point is not whether one tragedy causes greater despair than the other. My point was simply that this tragedy is affecting me in ways that I am at a loss to verbalize. However, one thing is for certain. There definitely is a light at the end of this tunnel if any of the earlier posts in this thread are an indication of how caring and concerned people can be. Feeling much better, thanks! -F
  19. Max, Kinda brings to mind your ealier post about the near miss you had with the biker... Just starts to make one think. You're absolutely right about the giving money bit. It's perhaps the only thing that one can do... besides praying. Thanks for the website... will look it up. -F
  20. Hate to be a downer, but I just had to get this off my chest. I was just wondering if others are going through similar thought processes... Since this tsunami disaster, I find myself enjoying my music (and this site, and other hobbies) less and less. Since the 26th morning, I can't help but feel a slight dark cloud hanging over many things that I do. Perhaps it's a sympathy thing. Or perhaps, like I felt when 9/11 happened, I can't get over how unlucky those people were to be at that place at that time. Or perhaps it's a painful realization of how trivial our hobbies and other day to day activities are in the larger scheme of things (whatever those may be!). Maybe it's the fact that Karachi, Pakistan is one of the few coastal cities around that ocean that were just not affected in the slightest. And perhaps, in that fortune I find some more guilt. Or perhaps, the first hand stories that we hear from some of our friends and relatives that were vacationing in the area are too mind-boggling for us to even attempt to comprehend. Whatever the reason is, I know that I'll come out of it one day, completely unscathed. I just pray that there is such a day for the survivors of this terrible, terrible tragedy. Once again, I apologize for the downer. It has absolutely nothing to do with 2-channel stereo. Just wanted to get it out there. Regards, -F

  22. Hmmm... I think I may not have clearly showed what was happening. ALL the controls of the Marantz (i.e., volume, source, power, etc.) were able to be controlled by the Arcam remote, and vice versa. I would imagine that manufacturers would have a number of different "combinations" of frequencies or signals for the different operations of the remote. How is it possible that two very different manufacturers from two different countries would end up with all the same signals for all the same functions of two very different amps? I would imagine the answer is no quirk of nature, but perhaps testament to the fact that a lot of manufacturers are now using generic pre-assembled components to their products. I wouldn't be surprised if the insides of the two remotes are actually generic Asian components bought from the same source. -F
  23. Hey there! Trivial, but interesting. While shifting my HT into the other room in order to be able to have a dedicated listening area for my Khorns, I somehow ended up with my Marantz HT receiver sitting next to an Arcam A80 that I was testing on the Horns. I was quite freaked out when, upon turning the Arcam off with the remote, the Marantz turned on! I found that all the many remote controllable functions common between the two were able to be controlled by each others' remotes. Is that common? I would think there are so many thousands (if not more) of frequencies that IR can work on, how would this happen? -F
