    Why LOTR?

---------------- On 12/26/2004 9:20:14 PM TBrennan wrote: Some fella said---"LOTR movies are a testament to how large, beautiful epics should be done - they are a benchmark of directing, sets, costumes and special effects, and as such they represent the highest achievement in audio and video production thus far. So yes... there is a reason why people use them as reference pieces - it's cause they ARE." Hardly. You need to see the VistaVision and 70mm epics of the 50s and 60s. Quality of picture, sets and costumes exceeds anything done in LOTR. And none of this cartoonish CGI nonsense: when DeMille and Kubrick put thousands of people on the screen there WERE thousands of real, actual, honest-to-God people on the screen. As for direction---well DeMille shot The Ten Commandments, Anthony Mann did El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire (for which a set of the entire Roman forum was built INCLUDING the temple of Jove on the Capitoline Hill, talk about sets), William Wyler did Ben Hur, John Ford did a 70mm epic western, Cheyenne Autumn (not his best but Ford in his dotage was better than most in thier prime, mind too the magnificent look of The Searchers, shot in VistaVision with Winnie "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" Hoch being Ford's cameraman), Joe Mankiewicz did Cleopatra, Nicholas Ray did King of Kings and 55 Days at Peking. Oh yeah, and a fella you may have heard of named David Lean. Shot a little picture called "Lawrence of Arabia". And don't forget Stanley Kubrick and Spartacus. I submit that Jackson has a LONG way to go to be included in the company of these guys. Some of these pictures look very good indeed on DVD; when I want to showoff my video rig I reach for The Ten Commandments, the superbit Lawrence of Arabia or Cleopatra. And the new Gone With the Wind, it looks superb.(I'm using the new Sony 975 upscaling player into a new 55" Sony LCD RP, through the HDMIs, TV is set to the patterns on the AVIA disc) By the way, I recently saw a 70mm screening of the restored Lawrence of Arabia at Roger Ebert's filmfest in Champaign. People were oohing and aahing at the lifelike quality of the picture. If you haven't actually seen these 70mm and VistaVision spectacles (I've seen them since the 1950s) you've missed the boat as far as picture quality. And the sound was damned good too; magnetic multi-track with wide range and low distortion in the case of 70mm. And none of the wretchedly overemphasized bass that gives so many immature HT fans an erection. I haven't even talked about Cinerama yet, I mean real 3 panel Cinerama. Ahhh, you kids will probably never know. You'll have to be content with CGI dragons and big subwoofers. If you ever have the chance to see any of the old spectacles in 70mm run, don't walk, to do so. ---------------- i , along with almost every other member of this forum have a 70 mm projection system built into our basements...NOT they used thousands of extras "because they had to" they couldnt have done LOTR with real people they would have needed 40,000 just for the main battle scene of Return of the King. or maybe they could have rounded up 10,000 just to march out of the witch kings castle, oh, but that would only be after they built a 40 acre 100 story tall mock up of the castle. compare the sound tracks of the older flicks, no way( dont even argue it) you cant even compare any of the older "EPICS" to the LOTR movies you must be one of the guys who brag about the 8 watt tube amp that you power your subs with (no disrespect to the tube heads out there) but sorry i dont agree, the reason the bass tracks wernt "overemphasized" on the classics was because they , at that time could not have reproduced it in any but the "state of the art theaters" of their time( and there were not alot of them) im 42 so.................call me immature!! man there is so many things wrong with your reply to this post i could go on and on and on............................ jay

IOW, I have to turn my receiver up higher. Cannot really tell if it sounds better becuase of the biwire or the new wire. But there is a little more crispness. But seems I lost something... I removed Monster XP that was like 9 years old. Replaced with (rat-shack) Monster XP that I made into biwire. Any Thoughts? Chris ---------------- after reading most of the way through this thread a would have to say (1) snort some coke (2) smoke some weed (3) grind up some doggy downers and dust your woofers and give it another listen or you might just check to see that all your wires are "fazed" jay

  8. after reading through this thread (twice) i have to say a couple of things (1) some of you guys use really big words? (2) surround has its place(like it or not , 2 channel purists) (3) i dont always do 7 channel, sometimes its only 3 channel or only 2 channel it depends on the recording (4)the lexicon is a ss pre/rpo(dean g) (5) i find this interesting , but wouldnt have given it a sesond thought if it wern't for a dope from hope article that was posted here some time ago. after reading that article i started playing with 3vs2vs5vs7vs9 channels (6)for the guys who have played aroung with multichannel sound you know what eric is talking about. for the ones who havent tried it...you should a link to the" dope from hope" that i refer to http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/files/Center%20Loudspeaker.pdf jay
  9. the local bbs that sells klipsch to the masses recently relocated to a brand new building. i had an opertunity to go there looking for a superbit dvd, the didnt know if they had it or not. so i grabbed the regular version. when i was there i decided to go shopping and found my way to the ht speaker section. they have these little octagons with a touch screen control, a flat screen tv and speakers. i walked in on a sales pitch by a young man who was in his late teens. his customer was interested in the klipsch speakers, but the salesman was pushing the other brands. every time the customer asked to hear the klipsch the salesman always switched to the smallest model, and comapred it to bigger ones of the other brand. he told the customer that "its obvious which one is the better speaker, brand "a" has more woofers, and a midrange to boot. the klipsch doesnt even have a midrange!!" the customer walked away with that miffed look on his face. the sales guy turned to me and asked if i needed any help. i politely declined. he left and i started playing with the system i put on the biggest floor standing speakers with the largest rear set they offered and cranked up the big sub. (all klipsch) they have a volume limiter on the control but it still cranked up pretty good and the sound was very impressive!! (they sell the whole 5.1 system for $2100!) the guy who walked away stopped back in and asked me what speakers i had playing and i showed him on the touch screen he told me thanks and walked away with a smile on his face!! things that make you go HHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMM jay

The largest I've heard of Klipsch making is 18" which is already huge. ---------------- thats why i wanted the model # .if it is indeed a 24 inch sub it might be worth buying ,just so you could say that you have one!!! jay
  11. whats the model # on that sub?? what are you going to do with it, sell it?? jay

  18. ---------------- On 12/20/2004 5:35:39 PM tgourlie wrote: NAD 2200's for amps, going to heresy II's for now, k-horns soon enough. The fisher price model that I looked at was a little complex. Each button was a different color, I would have liked to see a little more uniform design and operation. ---------------- thanks for having a sense of humor!! in your case id look for a good used reciever that has pre outs. that way you will be able to power the center channel. you may need to think about spending more than 200 smacks to get what you want. good luck jay
  19. the soft clipping is a limiter that will round off the top of the output signal of a clipping amp. it will save your speakers. that said with k-horns i would leave it off unless your playing really, really loud.( its just an other circuit in the signal path.) as far as having any issues with my stuff, never, and some of it ive owned for 20 years!! jay
  20. over on the two channel board iv'e seen a couple of threads where a bunch of guys get together and check out each others systems. i think this sounds like fun, and its always good to put faces with names. im in omaha, anyone else?? jay

    Voom

nebraska furniture mart has voom set up in the bigscreen room. its kinda cool because they have multiple recievers set up and have several differant channels playing on differant hd sets. the salesman said that the service if very reliable. as a side note iv'e never been to the 'mart during any kind of bad weather so i cant speak for voom under thoes circumstances. i will say that it been up and running every time ive checked jay
  22. i checked your system profile and you dont have any info there. what kind of amp/ amps are you going to use with your new processor? for $200 i was going to something smart, like fisher price..... but i decided to hold off
