  1. Where did you get them at? I only saw two dealers listed in Western Washington for Heritage speakers, Bry's and Soundbroker. Flat TV in Seattle is no longer listed on the Klipsch website. 78Khorn
  2. Worked for me by just copying and pasting to the browser address and hitting go.
  3. Meagain, I believe in way you are right it is a crapshoot. One you need to figure out by spending as little money as possible. The amp, crossovers, and room EQ could each or all be a problem. Earlier I think it was said that someone offered to bring a McIntosh amp over for you to try. Do That. Contact Al, Dean, or Bob and see what it would cost to have your crossovers checked out. Not much money spent to see if/where your problems are. Then try the EQ. By the way if you look at the equipment that people own on the forum you will see lots of owners of older Khorn that list ALK's right after the year of their speakers.
  4. Jeff, have you ever tried updated crossovers? If noI i will use your logic about amps and tell you that you have no idea what you are missing. Mine sounded really good but I chose to try the crossovers after reading the threads on this forum I had listened to my speakers for over 26 years and didn't realize a change had taken place. I only knew I didn't listen to them as often as I used to. Now I listen to them a lot more. May have been fatigue I didn't even realize I was experiencing.
  5. Meagain, I don't recall seeing much in the way of negative comments about Al K's, Dean G's, or Bob Crites's crossovers, but I have seen a lot of positive. Al K's ALK universals cost about $429.00 for a pair. less than the extended slope but more than some of the others. I think Dean G does what he calls Super AA's, I'm not sure of the price but it is easy to find out. I also think that Bob Crites will redo your AA's for less money. Dean and Bob would give the the cost on what they do. There are many threads about crossovers that you can read. I have a pair of 1978 Khorns and a pair of 1978 Belles. I put new ALK's in both pairs and I can tell you that it is the first thing I will do if I buy any more older heritage. I have worked with placement and sealing the base bins and it helped the sound quality, I have changed the crossovers and that helped the sound quality, next will come an amp upgrade from my HK 6650 and Pioneer 1014 to probably either NAD or McIntosh (known for their warm sound, not harsh/bright). This last move will by far cost the most and probably have the least effect. I'm very happy with my current sound at all volume levels but you never stop working to improve once the quest begins. 78 Khorns Might do a Beringer down the road but my Pioneer has the MCACC EQ and I prefer the sound of my Khorns without any EQ as compared to the auto-MCACC.
  6. In this case, it was the source material. But yes, the S's & T piercing goes away with the auto HK setting. So I know it can be tweaked somehow. I'm listening to Peter Gabriel's 'Up' album. Track 2: "Growing Up". Some cymbal crashes are a bit painful at high volumes. Though I imagine no matter how clean, cymbal crashes can hurt at very high volumes compared to other stuff. Then when I switch to the HK's auto mode, that is fixed, but it bury's other stuff down more that I'd rather hear more upfront like brushes on the drums. Rather than try and fix a probable crossover problem (25 years old) with an EQ (treating the symptoms and not the problem), I would have the crossovers checked out first. See earlier posts 78 Khorn
  7. What did you have hooked up to your TV before this HDTV DVR? Was it using the input to the TV that you have this HDTV DVR hooked up to? Have you used the input on the TV that you have this DVR hooked up to before? Have you tried a different input on your TV? Sounds to me like your connection from the DVR to the TV is bad and since you tried another DVR , I wouls suspect either a bad input on the TV or a crossed cable. I bet your menu would work fine with the S-Video or RG-6. Again leading you to a bad input on the TV or a crossed cable Your HDTV DVR probably has a DVI connection and maybe even a firewire conection that can connect up to a HDTV also. Depending on what method you use you may have to adjust a setting in the set-up menu.
  8. Meagain, only by listening to your receiver vs another amp will you know if there is a big improvement. A change is this area will be your largest expenditure and possibly not the most noticable one (again easily proven by having another amp hooked up to your speakers and compare). I don't think I've ever heard anyone here on this forum who has 20+ year old Khorns who didn't think that a crossover network update/upgrade made a big difference. On my Khorns the bass became fuller, the sound smoother (warmer/ less bright) with no loss of detail. I'm sure others could give you there experiences as well. Or you could go look up a crossover thread. 78 Khorn
  9. Meagain, if you have the opportunity to have someone bring a McIntosh amp over to your room to hear your speakers powered by it I would take them up on the offer. It will validate the sound you are hearing from your current receiver. As long as your current receiver passes muster then I wouldn't make that your first move for improvement. Since your speakers are 1981 vintage I would think that the best improvement you can get for the buck after ensuring you have good corners and seals would be: 1) Have crossovers reworked. (made a big difference on my 1977's Khorns and I didn't know there was a problem) 2) Equalization if you have room EQ problems 3) Different amplifier. I will say that placing my speakers on the long wall of my room made a difference. 78 Khorn
  10. I originally had one speaker on top of my 65" HDTV and didn't like the sound coming from the top of the picture. I tried the speaker on one side of the TV and didn't like the center channel sound coming from there either. I finally decided to buy two speakers and place one on either side of the TV. To power these two speakers I used the amp section of an integrated HK only and ran the center PREAMP OUT from my surround receiver to the Left CHANNEL AMP IN of the HK. I then hooked up one speaker to the LEFT CHANNEL of SPEAKER "A" terminals on the HK and the other to the LEFT CHANNEL of SPEAKER "B" terminals of the HK and selected the SPEAKER "A+B" setting. I believe this allows the center channel to be played out of both speakers at 8 ohms. The sound is now centered to the picture of my TV. The only issue I didn't have to address is volume since my two speakers are identical. If you can't use the same speakers to provide the center channel then the use of an independent amp for one of the speakers will need to be used to obtain the desired volume level you are looking for no matter where you place the speakers. Also if you place the speaker providing sound to the back seats in the overhead you may not like the sound of the voices coming from the ceiling unless you keep it close to the picture. If you use separate amps to control the volume to the two center speakers you may have to independently adjust the volume to one of them every time you make a volume change to system to maintain the appropriate balance based on where you are sitting. My recommendation would be to use speakers of similar timbre and efficiency for both center channel speakers so one amp can power both center channel speakers, balance in sound can be then be maintained when making system volume changes no matter where you place the speakers.
  11. I just added a pair of Belles to go with my K-horns. I'm using them for the center channel and they match the K-horns perfectly. I have heresy's for the surrounds. Both the K-horns and the Belles have ALK universal networks. If you have the room, Belles or La Scalas are the way to go unless you can do more K-horns. 78 Khorn pictures posted on the forum under 78 Khorn
  12. I added a couple of pictures of my HT in my HT photo folder 78 Khorn.
  13. I just installed my new ALK networks in my 1978 Belles that I bought from Soundbroker. These networks have the Kimbers for the tweeters. They sound great, especially compared to the old AA's that were in the Belles. I'm using the two Belles on either side of my TV as my center channel for my HT but I did listen to them as mains for awhile before and after I put the ALK's in. I also switched my HT around putting the 1978 Khorns on the 24.5 ' wall instead of the 21' wall. I like the sound of the Khorns better on the long wall and the EQ showed a noticably flatter response as well. I also moved the Heresy surrounds from the back to the sides. All these changes made improvements in the sound. I'll post some pictures in my new folder soon. The next move needs to be the purchase of a new amp/amps and a processor to replace the Pioneer 1014 receiver I'm currently using. Any recommendations for amps and processors to fit my system would be appreciated. 78 Khorn
  14. This flagship of the ESS AMT line offers superb performance throughout the full audio range. Utilizing the unparalleled Heil air-motion transformer in a bi-radiating configuration, it provides unmatched imaging, definition, and detail throughout the critical mid-range and high frequencies. Superior bass performance is achieved through the use of our 12-inch cast woofer in a large volume cabinet, coupled with a front facing bass radiator. The classic styling and acoustic performance make this the natural choice for those who desire the best.
  15. No such luck on the pictures. I told the dealer that they should post the K-horns on the Klipsch forum if they really wanted to sell them. I don't think that they are really anxious to sell and that is why the price is so steep. One of the owners spent some time with Paul Klipsch at his home and they actually have a picture of Paul signing this set of speakers. Sounded to me like they are still prettty attached to this memory so they priced the speakers accordingly.
  16. While visiting San Diego I stopped in at Brier Stereo (Klipsch Heritage dealer) to look at their equipment. In one of their listening rooms they had a fabulous pair of laquered Brazilian Rosewood Klipschorns signed by Paul Klipsch. Talk about a beautiful piece of furniture that can be yours for $14,000. The dealer also sold NAD and McIntosh so I'm going to go back and have them hook up the Khorns to some surround separates to see what I think. I've been wanting to upgrade to separates for awhile and this will give me a chance to hear some that I'm interested in hooked up to khorns. 78 Khorn
  17. Back in 1978 I traded in my ESS monitors (6 ohm speakers) for my K-horns. The ESS had a Heil Air-motion Transformer for the high and midrange sound and a 12" bass with a passive radiator for the low end. The highs that the HAT put out were excellent but the lower midrange and bass were a little week. The speakers were capable of biamplification but I never got that far. The dealer I dealt with had a policy that you could trade in your speakers in the first year you owned them and receive full value against a set of speakers costing at least twice as much. Bye bye ESS, hello K-horns. 78 Khorn
  18. I did a little sanding and applied linseed oil and the tops look a whole lot better. Click on links below to see the pictures. Also ordered some ALK Universals for Christmas. 78 Khorn http://home.comcast.net/~tlferguson/belleright.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~tlferguson/belleleft.jpg
  19. This link should work if you paste it into your address and click on go. I couldn't make the picture work on this site so I put a picture on my web server space and listed the address to it. http://home.comcast.net/~tlferguson/HT.jpg 78Khorn

  21. I've been out of town since I bought the 1978 Belles from Kevin and I just got them hooked up to the Home Theatre. I have them both hooked up as the center channel on either side of my 65" HDTV replacing the RC-7 I used to have. They sound very good and obviously match my 1978 Khorns with ALK's better than the RC-7 did. I will probably get some ALK crossover for them pretty soon. Below is a link to a photo of the front of my HT. My Christmas break project will be working on the Belles to remove the water stains that are on the tops. Other than the water stains, these speakers are in great shape. When I'm done with the work on the tops I will send out some better photos. 78 Khorn http://home.comcast.net/~tlferguson/HT.jpg
  22. The link below is a picture of my set up. With this arrangement and the RC-7 gone, what do you think for a center? A Heresy on top, a Cornwall on top, or two La Scala or Belles on the side of the TV? http://home.comcast.net/~tlferguson/HT.jpg
  23. This a my current set-up minus the RC-7 which has been sold so I can buy a center that is a better match for the Khorns. The corners are 21 feet apart on this wall. If I went to the adjacent wall to the right it would place them 24 feet 6 inched apart.
  24. How do you wire up two speakers in parallel for a center channel? If I did that and placed them on either side of my TV then the sound should be centered. This would allow me to use Cornwalls, La Scallas, or Belles. I used to have an RC-7 on top of the TV and that weighed about 42 lbs. I could probably put a cornwall on top but that would look pretty big up there. I would really like to use a Belle for the match and looks if I could figure a way to make it sound centered. Maybe I will have to wait on that until I buy a TV that could be placed above a Belle. More comments are appreciated.
