  1. hi all, i've been a lurker for sometime but have been a bit loth to contribute because even tho i am a klipsch-fan and have klipsch speakers i don't have either high grade components or even a good room set-up for the klipschorns. i still love their sound even tho i don't have the full bass response or stereo seperation i could have with the right room. i also have a klipsch 5.1 home-theatre setup and 5.1 computer speaker setup. anyway, the point is i would still enjoy joining the group for the concert and listen to how the klipsch speakers should really sound (something i may come to regret). so please count me in for this event. i live down around the charlottesville area, a couple hours from Bethesda. if needed, please e-mail me at the following address: petealmquist@wmconnect.com. thanks a lot and maybe i might be able to express a thought or two at times on the forum. pete
  2. getting back to the man's original question i have to wonder if it's simply a function of the equipment that he is observing. in my case, when i switch from normal listening mode to the dts and other digital modes when playing either vhs or dvd, i have to crank up the volume a touch to maintain the same db's. i always attributed this to the possibility that its using more of the decoding circuitry or some such and needed to draw more power to do so thus also reducing the volume.
  3. hi all, out of curiousity i went and auditioned the rf7s. they were hooked to a macintosh system and the room offered pretty much ideal placing, etc. frankly i wasn't really that impressed. they had a tremendous amount of power. the equalisation was biased towards the bass end of the spectrum until i adjusted according to my tastes but even at neutral it seemed to my ear to be more of a 'knock your socks off' powererful sound as compared with the klipschorns more full-range clarity. i was listening to a digital cd recording of handel's messiah. is it possible it was reflecting more the qualities of the macintosh system than the intrinsic sound of the rf7? i didnt have the oppurtunity to switch back and forth with any other speakers in the shop so it's just my initial impression i'm expressing. this shop doesn't have any klipschorns to compare with and the room mainly has klipsh and b&k speakers. just wondered if anyone else had a similar or different reaction compared to mine. i also have to wonder if it's possible the recording itself might have had something to do with the sound i was hearing. any thoughts would be fun to hear...
  4. hi all. thanks for the replies. i downloaded some info on setting the parameters for the arm, cartridge, etc. and played with it some. it seemed to improve slightly but not much. still an incredible difference from the sound of the cd player and the phono. way too much bass and muddy sounding mid-range from the record player. i wonder if i can try out another cartridge from an online store with the possibility of returning it if it doesn't solve my problem. has anyone done this? thanks again for any advice you can offer.
  5. good song but was done by harry chapin... cat stevens has a lot of good stugg though...
  6. hi all, i'm almost embarrased to post this question to such an august crowd but since there is so much accumulated knowledge within this group i hope for some advice. i have a set of klipschorns driven by an NAD 320bee amplifierand usually listen to cd's played on the best Pioneer cd player i could buy at the time from crutchfield. my wife has a really nice collection of lp's that she listens to but only recently i found at some local antique shops (?!) some classical lp's that are in excellent condition and therefore developed more of an interest in listening to vinyl. i didn't realize the turntable we have, an old technics direct drive with a technics replacement cartridge, played with so much bass. to my ear it's all bass and lower midrange with the upper range very subdued. i crank the tone controls full on with the treble and full off with the bass to try to half enjoy the music. it's awful. so here's the question. in your opinion, would a different cartridge make any real difference? i can't afford a good turntable and can't really afford a very good cartridge. still i would really like to get some decent sound from playing lp's. what would you suggest as the best low cost solution? by the way i'm using the NAD phono preamp that mates with the amplifier. it's a small box that sits seperate from the amplifier. thanks for you advice...
  7. pardon my ignorance but i have to inquire...you say the amp is set up to run a center channel. will it run a two channel setup as well? will it run klipschorns for instance? just wondered...
  8. we have a caravan and the seats unclip and pull out very easily. look for a lever at each place they attach in the back to the floor. by the way, the exact measurments of the k-horns are: 51 1/2" tall (total), base bin is 38 1/4" tall, 31 1/4" wide, 28" deep and roughly triangular if you veiw them top down. if they are in the box those dimensions increase radically because you lose the triangular shapes which make them fit in a space better, not to mention that the boxes have about 1 1/2" foam all around the speakers. i've got them into a fairly small space by simply turning them to face each other. they are heavy so be prepared for that. best of luck on your purchase, delivery and listening enjoyment!
  9. jon, you don't sing with YES do you? as far as the jazz goes my list is only mentioning the artists and you will see that i'm a lightweight when it comes to listening to jazz. although i enjoy some early jazz (dave brubeck quartet, duke ellington, etc.) i enjoy listening to soft jazz by the likes of grover washington, jr., chuck mangione and bob james. i especially enjoy bob james... and has anyone ever heard of tim weisberg? cool flute playing! again it's more smooth and light than some but i find it fun and relaxing.
  10. hi all, i have the sr-80's as well and they are very different from any other headphones i have used. i've never owned any high-end phones but have had various models of lesser expensive ones. possibly the nicest pair i've owned in the past were some heavy full-coverage pioneer phones vintage late 70's. i include this info so you know the limitations of my knowledge... my immediate impression of the grado's playback is accuracy. they seem to really play what they are plugged into. i have no problem with their ability to play low frequency response. they sound at least as full as the klipschorns. but they seem to me to be very literal if that makes any sense. they aren't warm or have exaggerated bass or any real personality that i can tell. they simply play what they are plugged into. i can hear a marked difference by plugging into different sources...the amplifier(NAD 320cee) vs directly into the cd player (one of the more expensive pioneer players crutchfield had a few years back..can't account how good of quality it is really) for instance. i do find it interesting that they are less efficiant than the klipschorns forcing me to crank up the volume controls a notch or two to attain the same volume. another interesting example of the accuracy are the background noises i'm not used to hearing in live recordings and even some studio recordings. i've heard various extraneous noises, mis-cues, off-notes, etc. which i hadn't really noticed before. maybe i'm simply catching more because i started listening for it. a good example are the cd releases of the beatles albums i've enjoyed collecting. one of the things i enjoy about them is that they don't seem to be as canned as some albums i have by other artists once you get past the accompanying music inserted by their well-meaning producer george martin. by this i mean they didn't always retake and remove every gaff or human touch that occasionally got caught in their studio recordings. that, to me, adds a fun human touch and it's fun to catch those tid-bits. but not to get off-topic, i do enjoy the grado sr-80 phones and have gone back to listen to a lot of recordings that have collected dust in the cd shelves. the warm sound and boomy bass i used to enjoy with the old pioneer phones aren't there but i've discovered some interesting new things in the music. it's got me interested in doing some more comparison listening with different headphones.
  11. hi all, i found the year my horns were manufactured but wonder if anyone can offer a little more information about them. the model is kbwo, ser.# 19x581 which according to the list would have them assembled in 1982. they have a k77m tweeter and k400 squawker. just wondering about crossover type and whether there are upgrades, etc. recommended for them. any info would be fun to know or perhaps someone can direct me to a site that has such info available. do all khorns have what looks like an amplifier inside the cabinet? two coils and various other components mounted on a metal plate along with the terminal board. just curious... pete

  13. one of the things i wanted with a new amplifier was absolutely no background hiss. i'm pleased with the results from my poor-boy's amplifier an NAD C 320BEE. ofcourse with the klipschorns i can barely crank the volume control more than a couple notches before starting to rattle the windows. and as far as i can tell the balance is fine between the different channels. i wish i had a better room to set up the speakers...not only is my music room/library/office fairly small but one wall is taken up by a full length/full height book shelf and another by a passageway into the hall. still and all i enjoy the sound very much. i don't often have a chance to crank up the tunes very loud with the wife and kids in the other room (or more often than not in the same room) so the quality at lower volumes is as important to me as much as anything else.
  14. hi all, i asked one time before but didnt get the answer i needed. i have an older set of khorns but would like to know how to identify what vintage they are. can someone suggest how i can find this out? also, would it be possible to find out how to improve their performance? i'm new to the forum and maybe need to apologise if this topic has already been beat to death. thanks for any info you can share.
