  1. Randy, Ray, even more amazing from antique sound labs is the "THE WAVE AV-8", $99 each...wow!!! wonder how they sound???? tony
  2. randy are you thinking his bass cabs and keeping the k-horns tops? or going all the way? his bass cabs seem like they would do a great job in getting you down into the mid to upper 20's...tony
  3. sounds awful! my "bad" good friday was that the motor on my boat stopped abruptly while in the middle of a snorkeling trip off Abergris Key in Belize, had to drink rum punch and wait for the tow boat...not too bad in comparison to yours...glad to hear you are o.k., best wishes, Tony
  4. gotcha, lemon oil furniture polish it is...though I though they had never been touched due to the rather rough finish...I can feel the wood grain somewhat...thanks, tony
  5. very pretty! you sit kind of close to those cornwalls, don´t you!!!??? with that tube rig it must sound vert "sweet"...regards, tony
  6. small world bill rawls! I hope your wrong about the SS versus low powered PP tube issue! (since you are in the process of rebuilding my very own MKIV monoblocks!) however I still have my McIntosh SS MA6400 integrated amp in my bedroom to go back to!...I had it connected to my K-horns for a couple of months and while dynamic in the extreme I longed for some "liquidity" less "glare", stridency...oh well...lets see what happens...upgrade mine on the "liquid" side...regards, tony
  7. raw birch then it is...tung or linseed oil is the concensus then? just wipe it on, rub? thanks, tony
  8. looking at the back I see "KB BIR RAW 17" and "serial # 207494685" ...raw birch?
  9. Gil, Have you considered peening a "tube amps for idiots" ? or perhaps "high-end tweaking for idiots" or even "audio for idiots" ? at least one copy can be considered pre-sold! thanks for explaning to me, in words I can understand (no mean feat!), how a tube functions! warm regards, tony
  10. I know I am risking "dumbest klipsch b-boarder of the year" honors but can someone tell me what wood and finish I have on my k-horns?...as a color blind and organically-challenged individual I am not sure what wood is used for my k-horns...I can tell you it is not laquered, varnished or, seemingly to me, oiled in any way, just natural wood, what type? I don't know...you can see them by clicking my "house" Icon above...thanks, Tony
  11. john, two little things...one, could you aslo send me a copy of those curves? and two, where can I find information about the new RSW-15? I cannot find it on this site....thanks, tony
  12. thanks guys, as soon as they arrive and are set up I will ring in with my own ramblings...regards, tony p.s. you are right, I can hardly wait!!!
  13. sound dog, My lousy PA speakers (k-horns) sound better than any speakers I have owned before (Magnapans, B&Ws, JBLs, Infinitys and home cooked, modified KLHs) why? more clarity, more definition, openess and most of all dynamism!...the punch!...I still from time to time think about the best qualities of my maggies and of my B&Ws and try, through tweaking, to coax a little more out of the k-horns BUT I would never go back! might have some other speakers in a secondary system but the k-horns are my final sepakers!...my guess is that anyone who talks down a k-horn has not really heard it in an appropriate environment with the appropriate electronics...hook them up in a small basement, without acoustic treatment, radio shack receiver, etc. etc. you get the idea...the fanatics are those who have these and have invested time to set them up correctly, the nay sayers are most likely those who have not lived with them...MTC...Tony
  14. Due to the post-earthquake repairs my main system is now covered with sheets and inactive for a period of five to six weeks...I have taken the opportunity to send my Dynaco MKIV amps to the states for some upgrade work...New caps, better 1% resistors, better binding posts, etc. the most important change of all will be the mod to triode operation...halves the power but who needs more than 25-30 watts per channel with k-horns anyway! though I miss the listening (all listening now done with grado headphones in my bedroom) I am very anxious to hear my amps in triode mode! anyone out there have experience with taking these PP amps to Triode? regards, tony
  15. dammit randy, now I will have to go out and buy a transport for serious listening! (no way I give up the two mega changers, I am too lazy...they also keep me from scratching or dirtying them!)...what about that CEC (whatever is was I cannot remember) that audio advisros is hawking? any opinions on other options...? regards, tony
  16. I bought 75ohm digital cable from MSB which was a significant improvement (significant? well I thought I could hear better!) than some monster cable digital cable I had before...on the other hand Monster makes a nice toslink cable at the top of thier line with real glass and polished ends (they all should be like that, watch out for bending!)....regards, tony
  17. mdeneen, can you give me an example of a vintage amp that uses the EL84 tube? sounds very interesting when you say "sweet, sweet"...thanks, tony
  18. I hate to keep harping on this BUT be careful when you pry the access door off! it will drop towards the floor and yank on the connections tabs of the woofer (on mine it broke the tabs right off!) you need to slowly un-stick the door anbd support it sdo that it does not hang off the woofer by the wires....then you can check out what's inside...just trying to help you avoid a "stupid error"made by yours truly....regards, tony
  19. I genuinely cannot hear any difference with the switchable upsampling board in or out...I would not order it...others ahve suggested that the power supply upgrade and some of the parts (caps and resistors, op amps) have a more noticable effect...Randy did the power supply thing he can comment, but I have decided that I should be happy with the tremendous improvement the Link dac made in the sound compared to my Sony changer's DAC!!! sometimes even nutty tweakers like us need to throw in the towel...I have been looking at amps and preamps lately the MSB product seems nearly state of the art! regards, tony
  20. another happy alk x-over owner rings in! I have them for my K-horns and they sound great!...thank god for people like al who love this hobby so much they are willing to share their knowledge with the rest of us! Tony
  21. AND if after checking the fuses you decide to take the panel of the woofer cabinet BE VERY CAREFUL our freinds at klipsch did not leave very much extra wire and you are in danger of yanking things off the x-over or woofer (it happened to me) when removing the panel...slowly and carefully, o.k.?...the k-horns should put out very satisfying bass when placed correctly in the corners so, you definately need to track down the reason for this problem, and then enjoy these turly high fidelity speakers! Tony
  22. I clipped off one arm of my clips leaving an "L" to fit Als x-overs, still plenty of contact area and has stayed put..JMTC
  23. Marantz 9´s ???? if you ever, EVER get bored of those amps just let me know I will send you a great SET amp in trade!!!! regards, tony
  24. Hey Malcolm, start another thread and tell us about the electronics behind your system...for example, how are you driving the decware subs? I have the plans for that same sub, how hards did you find it to build? the instructions, I find, leave a little to be desired...regards, tony
  25. al k., congrats on your site and lovely stereo system....!!!! tony
