  1. Ok, with my tax refund this year I have decided to build myself a sub. So far, I have decided this: -MDF cabinet -Dayton Titanic MKIII 15" driver -1000 watt Dayton plate amp -ported design Questions questions. Here goes. Is HDF better to use than MDF? Front or rear ported? Flared or regular port ends? Where can I get the materials to construct the port? Do I need the 1000 watt amp or will 500 watts suffice? Do I need absorption inside the cabinet? Do I need to account for the volume of the absorption when calculating cabinet volume? How do I reinforce the cabinet? What is the best way to build a cabinet (wood screws, wood glue, epoxy, silicone, etc.)? Should I seal the seams with caulk or something similar? Do I need to use wood glue or epoxy at the joints? When modeling in WinISD, how do I know if port noise will be an issue at high volumes? If I can come up with any more I will post later, but it would be great if anybody could answer just a couple questions. Also, I tried entering the TS parameters into WinISD but I am not confident that I did so correctly. Can someone email me a correctly configured .wdr file for the Dayton Titanic 15" driver so I can model it (Jetsch@insightbb.com)? Thanks in advance guys.
  2. I highly suggest the sub-12. Definately best bang for your buck and is a very capable sub.

  4. No they are not out, and even if they were, no way youll get it for $450. You got this one right? http://www.klipsch.com/product/product.aspx?cid=653
  5. I run a MythTV frontend with my projector. Its like tivo but with a 1.4 terrabyte raid 5 array behind it instead of dvr. My entire movie collection is on demand stored on the server along with all the FLAC so there is never any disc swapping. TV movies music are all at the touch of a button. It is amazing.
  6. For those of you that have pain problems, may I ask what kind of doctor you are seeing? As for an alternative for those of you that live with pain, I would humbly suggest seeing a clinical psychologist that specializes in pain management. My father works at the University of Kentucky as one, and roundabouts people are always stopping him when he is out shopping/jogging and telling him how well their pain is doing. Seeing a specialist may open up some new option that you may not have realized were availible (both drug related and others). Just a thought.
  7. Also very important is the linear travel of the drivers, no? They could have beastly excursion and therefore move more air anyways. All I'm saying is that I think Klipsch knows what they are doing. I anticipate (and fairly I think) that these will outperform RF-7s
  8. These are 64 ohms. A possibility? http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productspecs.asp?transid=004729 These are 32 ohm. http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productspecs.asp?transid=500156
  9. Well, I need it to drive SOMETHING else, becuase these sure as hell arent cutting it. Are there no high sensitivity headphones out there? I guess the only thing to do is swing by the Ovation and test some out. I wonder if they will let me hook up my iPod to see if it can drive them.... As a completely unrelated note, I just listened to Dream Theater's Liquid Tension cds both volume 1 and 2. I was already a fan of their other work, but this was even above and beyond breathtaking. Audio bliss on compact discs. Amazing. I really dont know what else there is to say. I think I just reached the climax of the audio experience today on January 4, 2007. Now the only thing greater to move on to is a better system.
  10. So I got an iPod for Christmas. I immediately detested the earbuds for both poor audio quality and for the fact that they will not stay in my ears. I want some headphones that sound nice, that will hit around 24 hz with about -3 dB or so and want to spend around $140. Am I asking too much? Preferably I would like them to be circumaural, but it is not a requisite. Since I am running them off of an iPod, I assume that they must be fairly sensitive. Can anybody point me in the right direction or give me some reviews or good companies. I'd rather shy away from Bo$e and that is the only reccomendation Ive gotten so far.
  11. Grrrr..... Dont mean to be picky, but BASH is not a brand! BASH = Bridged amplifier switching hybrid, which is an amplification tehnology blending the advantages of class D and Class AB amplification. The result is a marriage of both high efficiency and high fidelity amplification which is often ideal for subwoofers. Just because an amplifier uses BASH technolgy does not make it flawed. BASH amps can be fantastic performers, it all comes down to how well built they are. Arguing that a cheap amp uses BASH breaks down often provides no grounds for asuming that all BASH amps (particularly on subs that made Nousaine's sub list) have the same problems by nature.
  12. Amen. There is nothing like that feeling when you cant see the speakers but you still feel those woofers rippling the air violently all around you...
  13. I contest. Newer, but undeniably faster and more powerful. Fastest street-legal car ever produced. Although not really factory built. http://www.fast-autos.net/lingenfelter/lingenfelter427tt.html What they are doing with the new Z06 looks promising, but there arent any cold hard numbers on it yet. Sounds plain frightening though. http://www.lingenfelter.com/LingenfelterC6ZO6427CIDTwinTurboCorvette.htm
  14. yes the RF-35s will sound great as rear surrounds. Also, go listen to the RSW-15. It will blend magically with the mains and is an extremely capable sub.
  15. I was just pondering that kind of stuff the other day. Allow me to propose a question. Can one use a nice directional microphone (cardioid?) to gather data in a frequency domain and they apply a reverse fourier transform in order to convert the data into a time domain? If this will work, I can write a program to do the math, unless there is one readily availible (and free). Would that be the way to go to really analyze things in a time domain, or am I mising something?
  16. If the candle was made of paraffin wax, there is a simple solution. Paraffin, being an alkane, is soluble in various ethers, esthers, benzene or other various aromatic hydrocarbons. You best bet may be to get your hands on some ethoxyethane (diethyl ether). This can be had at most auto part stores in the form of starting fluid for diesel or gasoline engines. Be advised, ethoxyethane is extremely flammable. Not only that, but it has a very high vapor pressure. That fact, when combined with the fact that it is a powerful anaesthetic, could spell disaster without precautions. Anyways, just go outside and use the ethoxyethane to clean the wax out, it should dissolve readily. It should be nonstaining as well. Just dont inhale too much, or you will wake up on the ground a few hours later.
  17. Dang. So what exactly DO you do for a living. Remind me to get a degree in that. [][]
  18. Thanks for the help! I only asked because my dad wants me to build him a big sub. I think he will do a double take when he sees this one, but I may be able to talk him into it. I just need the TS parameters to medel it and give him some extra info about size extension SPL etc...
  19. I cant find the T/S parameters for the Ascendant Audio Avalanche 18'. It isnt in the T/S database as far as I saw, and I cant seem to find them elsewhere. Anyone know where I can find them?
  20. That is obscene. What kind of extension does he get, and how loud? Is it high quality?
  21. Thats a great point, I guess I never thought about cylinders from a practical applications standpoint. Only goes to show you that mathematics only gets you so far...[]
  22. Thumper, as far as enclosure proportions and sizes (for transpotation purposes) think outside of the box. Cylindrical enclosures are very space efficient. I remember a forum member, maybe Mr. Hurd that used a good stiff material for a diy cylindrical sub and had good results. As far as whether that driver will work for a down-firing application or not, you will have to ask others more knowledgeable than I. I dont know which T/S parameter accounts for the stiffness of the suspension, but I would assume that down-firing sub drivers must be stiffer.
  23. That is hardly the optimal cabinet size or tuning frequency for that driver. You would have been WAY better off with a tuning frequency of 20 hz and a cabinet volume of about 8.2 ft^3. Then you would have ended up with 0 dB at 20 hz and -3 dB at 17.5 hz rather than 0 dB at 25 hz and -3 dB at 23 hz. Another problem is that with your design there is a large peak in FR between 26 and 55 hz. It is actually +4 dB at 34 hz. This may result in a somewhat boomy subwoofer. EDIT: There is no way you will have output at 1 hz no matter what the design. Maybe you mean 10, but that is still impossible, especially considering your cabinet volume and tuning frequency.
