  1. It´s not exactly audio but it´s an ht disaster. So I will tell the story. I was building the black paneling in my ht with a friend of mine. It´s a wooden construction covered with black stage-cloth. We used staples to fix the cloth on the wooden framework. We had been working all day and finally had to mount the cloth on one of the biggest and most difficult pieces. We took every precaution and worked really slowly so that the cloth would have nice tension in the end, eventhough the frame had a lot of tricky angles and edges. When we where finished we picked it up from the floor and marveled at our work of genius. Well.... at least until we tried to put it in place on the wall and finally discovered, that we had mounted the cloth mirror-inverted. Dooooooohhhhhh! We spent another 45 minutes on the floor pulling out around 250 staples with a scredriver and pliers. Then we did the whole thing again. The good news... in the end everything looked perfect! Nick
  2. Are you replacing the standard caps and resistors with higher quality parts? I am really interested in the outcome as I think about doing the same thing to my amp and dvd-player. I heard that changing the caps in the signal path will make a significant difference in sound quality. Nick
  3. Well... at least the guy on the phone had a good day! The guy who got paralized by pepperspray and beat up with a bible probably had a less glorious day. I picture the old lady similar to the old lady in "The incredibles". Nick
  4. One strange thing that I found with my Primare amp is the fact that the sibilance will vary in the different modes. With no source connected you will not hear any hiss or at least almost no hiss from the speakers at any volume level, if you are in one of the digital input modes. If you switch to one of the analog modes such as SACD (where the amps DACs are bypassed) the hiss will increase greatly at a certain volume level. I have to say though, that these volume levels would either kill my RF-7s or me.... I figure that this hiss might me produced by induction caused in the interconnects through other electrical wires or high frequency radiaton (cell phones...). This induced signal will then be amped in analog mode. Nick
  5. No matter how good they sound, I wouldn´t pay 1 buck for their looks. Uglyyyyyyy. I´d rather haver Marylin Manson stand naked in the corner of my living room than those monsters. (The price might be the same though....) Nick
  6. That was an interesting information. So it´s not only a feeling, it´s actually been proven. But if I think about it, that seems to be global issue. When I turn on the radio here in Austria I hear swear words at 9:00 in the morning. This was not the case 10 years ago. Same thing with TV Programm. You will hear people swear and see violence scenes in the afternoon or the early evening. We had "Night Rider" when I was a kid. And eventhough it was "action" it was the kind of action I would accept for kids. Michael Knight was our hero... nothing wrong with that. Nick
  7. Yepp! I see what you mean. It seems there is more passion for agression than passion for passion! I believe that many of the problems start here. Kids are kept from a whole number of social spare time activities by the law (going to clubs and so on), left with little options how to spend their time. The world they are presented with is full of agression and fighting whereas some important topics like sexuality are pretty much banned from them. Well... if that isn´t the wrong singnal....
  8. Well! Thats a tricky situation. One thing that comes to my mind is, you could try do lay them on the floor right behind where you sit and have the speakers face upwards to the ceiling. This might create a feeling of sound coming from behind as it will not be cleary locateable. To really find out I would link the speakers to the amp, put in one of your dvds with 6.1 signal and just try various speaker positions until you find the one that works best for you. Nick
  9. Hmm.... What I do in cases like this is, drive over to my local dealer, load the stuff in my car and install it at home. I listen to it for a day or two. If I like it I go and pay for it if I don´t like it I simply bring it back. There is nothing better than testing the speakers in their final environment. I really cannot tell you if the RC-7 will match your system, but what I can tell you it is, that it is a great centerspeaker! Nick
  10. Well in the end it is your personal "taste" that decides. If you feel the sound and feel of your system is the way you like it, then you should stick with your Jamos. I prefer my speakers to be matched to each other. Meaning if I have horns in the fronts, i want horns in the surrounds and the center. Especially when listening to multichannel music I find it important that all speakers reproduce the music in the same way. Differnet speakers add different "color" to the sound. This doesnt really matter when watching movies as the surrounds mostly reproduce noises and add to the atmosphere. But it does matter when listening to multichannel music. You wouldn´t want that guitar coming out of your fronts to sound different from the guitar coming out of your surrounds, right? I use the RS7s as my surrounds. To get them closer to the sound of the RF7s I have linked them to an extra sub. This way they system is more balanced. Listening to SACD like Diana Krall or Norah Jones is truly great! Nick
  11. Hi everyone! I am european as some of you know. I spent quite a few time in the US and I do feel connected... BUT one thing, that I find truly weird is the american movie rating system. I want your opinions on this. So here is what I think. Why, oh why is a movie like "Tin cup" (Kevin Costner) rated R? (meaning 18+, right?). Just because there is a mildy erotic scene with two people kissing in front of a fire place? I mean is there anything wrong with bodily contact and love? We are not talking XXX here! On the other hand a movie like "Mortal Combat" is rated PG 13 or was it 16? Anyways.... this movie is all about fightin, and killing. With very graphic display of violence. Am I the only one that feels, that the rating system is transporting a completely wrong picture to juveniles? Or has this rating system changed since I have last been to the US (which was 6 years ago). Nick.... still wondering
  12. ---------------- p.s. The THX-Us's sounded much more suited to movies than music btw. The reference 7's have a sound that appeared much fuller and pristine. ---------------- I too think it is more suited for movies.... but you can still listen to music in an enjoyable way. At least I felt that way. As I tend more towards good music performance I own an RF-7 system! ;-) 7.2.... talking about LFE... Nick
  13. I have pretty much the same situation as you, if i understood you right. I run my system in a 7.2 configuration and found that it works best for me, if the surrounds are mounted to the side walls at ear level and the rear surrounds are mounted behind and above. Have a look at the picture (you can´t see the left surround, because it is hidden under the table). http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/files/HT113.jpg Regards Nick
  14. ---------------- On 8/18/2005 6:25:12 AM Smokem wrote: The KW-120's ROCK!!! Keep it all KLIPSCH!!! ---------------- Absolutely! The 120s and the amp that comes with them are top notch. My dealer has the system installed and it delivers killer performance. If you want the maximum for movies, this is the way to go. What truly amazed me though is, that it´s also a nice system for audio sessions. Smooth, well balanced. ... as i said... amazing! Nick
  15. Hi everybody. I talked to one of the chief developers at Mundorf today and he told me pretty much the same things as you guys. ... which shows how good this forum really is! He said, that in some cases it is actually better to stack the caps in parallel as this will increase discharge speed and by that improve the sound. This will however have no effect with their new silver/gold caps due to their highly advanced...blablabla.... then it got really technical. Anyways. He told me to measure all the values of the components and send him a diagram. He will then sort out, which parts I need and which make sense. Now thats what I call great service! Thanks everyone. Nick
  16. Okay. I think I got the point. Simply from a "clean looks" point of view I would prefer finding parts that do have the right values and avoid doubles to reach a certain value. The big advantage with Mundorf is, that they are located in Germany, right next to Austria. I know that global shipping makes distance relative, but I still like the idea of buying a product from the neighbourhood (okay... very, very sort off....). I will give them a call tomorrow and see, what they say. It´s just a guess, but I am pretty sure they will come up with a solution using Mundorf parts! Thanks for the quick answers! Nick PS: @ Dean: Is there a reason why one should leave the inductors on the x-overs as they are? I mean, stick with the original ones....
  17. Good evening. I am not a whizz kid when it comes to the advanced electrical stuff. I am trying to buy the components needed to do the mod on my crossovers. The problem is, that it seems that the values I need are not availiable. I am looking to buy Mundorf parts. Caps, resistors, maybe inductors. Now here is what I need and what I can get: Needed: Availiable: 5uF 4.7 / 5.6 uF 12uF 10 / 15 uF and so on. Same with the resistors: 2 ohms 1.8 / 2.2 ohms Now my question is: Can I use parts that do not have the exact values? I guss this will bias the sound in some way. Can I "stack" parts. Say a 4.7 cap + a 0.3 cap to make it 5? Will these values add or not? Questions and even more questions. Nick
  18. Hi Dean! Well Austrians are a bit funny sometimes. (You might know if you have seen "the sound of music".) Okay.... forget that. We are not runnig around singing and dancing waltz all day. ;-) I already talked to Mundorf today. They where very helpful, eventhough their capacitors cost a fortune! The have come up with a new, even better capacitor topping their supreme capacitors. It´s the supreme silver/gold cap. To give you an impression... the 10mF cap costs approx. 160,- $. Thanks for your help! I will post pictures, once the new x-overs are finished. Have a nice day! Nick
  19. Hi Pat! Primare equipment is a story of its own. When it comes to sound quality it is hard to beat (price/performance ratio). Especially the DVD-30 is one excellent piece of equipment. Apart from beeing a very good dvd-player it is an even better CD and SACD player, easily matching dedicated CD players. The same applies to SPA-20, which is a great multi-channel amplifier and an outstanding stereo amplifier. Now to the downside... Primare is a Swedish product. And my god... it really is Swedish sometimes. The menus must have been programmed under heavy vodka influence, because it takes quite some time to figure out the "inner logic" for a sober person. The SPA-20 needs a hard reset every once in a while because the system simply crashes (no... Bill Gates has nothing to do with it in this case...). And as common with all Primare products, there are no fancy extra features. Theres no gadgets and gimmicks. These components are all about good sound and nothing else. You either live with their little "moods" or you go and buy something else. ;-) Thanks for the hint. I will send Dean an email! Nice evening! Nick
  20. Hey Dean! I have taken apart my RF-7s during the weekend. Apart from fixing the foam inserts, which were partially blocking the rear ports, and tightening the various connections I took pictures of the crossovers. Would you be so kind and tell me which part is to be replaced by which new part? (was that a correct english sentence?!?) Thanks a lot! Nick
  21. Sorry for the poor quality. Pics were taken with my cellphone.
