  1. i currently use the HGS-15 & am considering taking it back for the HGS-18. the dealer gal's opinion is that 18" subs are to "slow" for music w/ say the rf-3 mains (which I plan to upgrade to the new rf in may). but anyway, though I don't want to lose anything on music, i'm really looking more for more SPL/slam for HT. any comments on the HGS-18 abilities for both HT & music? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  2. yea have u seen the home theater review of the hgs-15 @ www.mcnaur.com/velo.dyne/ ? these guys think it's great for HT but just ok for music. i guess it's pretty subjective. has anyone ever seen the 25hz or even average output of the HGS-18? figure it's about the same as their F series 18s. & on nousaine, the hgs-15 is near the top, but I have to wonder how 2 CT-150s stacked would sound (that should be about 111db @ 25hz accordingly) & they don't have that accelerometer. so if the dealerlady (who is my wife equivalent goes along i'd consider exchanging for either: - 2 CT-150* - 1 HGS-18* - 1 RSW-15* *dealer basically only offers Vel or klipsch subs the rsw is the wild card since we're in the quiet period. but i wonder between the 1st 2 choices which would have the higher HT slam (albeit at higher distortion) my guess is the 2 CT. & that includes the ability to turn up outputs dman ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  3. thanks spider. didn't know if it was w/ older or newer gear. my sony definitely doesn't fit the bill
  4. never heard of these & can't find any reference to them on this bb. what kind of output devices use XLR outputs to like these inputs on my sub? what are they all about? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  5. dman & rw, part of the reason I called vel was i was getting some bottoming out of the sub like say on the beach of Priv Ryan in DD (I got it before the DTS version came out) with the output at 6-7ish & the crossover out (which I do for movies). i think what the tech was saying is that the hgs w/ their accelerometer servo control/limiter, like TV keeps pointing out, make the hgs more compatiable for music listeners that prefer nice tight, clean, low disortion bass but at the sacrifice of high output from HT effects. iow, the servo in itself reduces the efficiency of the hgs to produce high SPL as the mixers intended whereas the klipsch have no such limits. i think i fall into the latter category where I could put up w/ more distortion to gain the higher SPL. i mean the 15 does shake things up pretty good on the HT explosions & such, but i'm thinking that 2 stacked non-servo subs or at least the HGS-18 or FSR-18 may be more the ticket for me. the dealer is going to be sick of me pretty soon warning: be sure to audition in your home area before sticking w/ a sub set-up. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  6. so I call velodyne's own tech support line to check on a few things & 1 of their techies (who says he's a 50 yr veterern) tells me that the HGS-15 sub should not be used w/ klipsch speakers. says 2 CT-150s (less $ than 1 15) or possibly an HGS-18 would work. says that since klipsch play so loud w/ their high efficiency the hgs really aren't loud enough to compete. says hgs go better w/ less efficient speakers like the Quad. didn't have the time to talk w/ him further. could this be the HGS servo/limiter factor or what is he talking about? i can't put my 15 in a corner, so i thought that may be why the lack of gut wrenching bass. but now i'm thinking take the hgs back & get 2 other vel sub models or wait for the rsw-15 (may have to get 2 of those to suit the dealer). hard to believe this guy. maybe it was his last day. the hgs is vel's flagship model. any thoughts on this vel tech's thinking? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  7. yes bass is good. sorry, i see your fix, u want bigger front towers that match up w/ out a lot of dollars. keep looking but i would try to make sure that the fronts & your center have the tonal match & don't put powered towers w/ a seperate sub (& imo straight fronts & a sep sub sound better than powered towers). rock on.
  8. oh, & u got me on the sf-2. if they do go a little lower, must be the design. but w/ a good sub that doesn't matter much. the rf-3 are 2db more efficient & they sound better. but actually though the sf-2 may be the best way to go to match your current center & the 3.1s as long as u get a real good sub. not real familar w/ the synergy series though.
  9. not real familiar w/ the ksb, but thinking the ref may not then be best match for those & your center. possibly the klf or the new line would be, but i'd try to at least have the center match the mains real well. then u may want to put up some chicken wire for those partees. oh & i do love bass - look at my sub - it has a 3000W peak amp. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  10. frankly or imo the ksw are not the best subs for the price. the new klipsch subs will be much better but of course more cash. the rf-3 sound great & my vel sub blends great w/ them as the rf only go down to about 40hz. the rf-3 & a good $500 sub may be your best route. but then you'll need a center & rears & (?) a new a/v receiver. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  11. cb, no,no rp. RF-3: the MSRP is only 800/pr & they're 1 of the best if not the best speaker values out there. u should be able to get both the RF-3 & a good sub for $1500 or less total. i'll probably upgrade to the new ref speakers in may because they should better match my cornwalls. don't look at RP-3 or 5 unless u just have no space for a seperate sub in a corner. are u doing 5.1 surround or just stereo w/ a sub? ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  12. i just saw your other post. if you're going to have a seperate sub, u don't want the rp speaks. that would be duplication & possible severe low bass conflict. oh, & 100W is more than enough for any klipsch speaker. & lfe is a channel designation for 5.1 surround (.1 is the lfe channel). the sub doesn't distinguish whether it's lfe or low bass or whatever. the receiver & decoders do that.
  13. i had rp-5 & took them back for the rf-3 & a seperate sub. u could get those & a ksw-15 sub & save about 500 & have imo a better sound. unless your limited for space (?) also keep in mind klipsch has new speakers coming in may. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  14. the sony only has 1 preamp sub out? even if that's the case u can use the lfe outs on the sp speaks. then use a Y only at the ksw to both L&R line ins. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  15. this is an excellent case of what product manufacturers face in the future. we're just starting to see the tip of the iceberg in electronic commerce. it will only snowball from here, f.e., AOL Time Warner - just watch what happens. i think in the future klipsch will face a dilemma w/ their distribution policy/strategy to the likes of Compaq Computer. a possible solution - like a CompanyDirect online store selling every Klipsch product supported by company owned display/service centers. don't want to go into lengthy analysis, but the concept could be worth a thought.
  16. t-man, i feel your pain (see my set-up below). my room config allows the big beasts only in the rear corns. & the sony dsp modes and/or dvd mixes just don't put the same sound level to the rears. even w/ music in prologic mode. i turn the rear level up +2-3db & crank the effect level to just 1 or 2 notches shy of full, which helps some. some where down the road i'm sure i'll upgrade my receiver to like a denon or marantz. would really like to have that 5 channel stereo mode for music. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  17. yea ken i do have the digital set-top box attached to the receiver digital coax input. i put my ear by the fsr-18 at the dealer & heard the same light hum (like air flowing). figure it's somewhat typical then & it's only audible really right at the sub cone. how does 1 go about breaking the rca ground though? thanks for your help. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!

  19. yea i'm in a similar situation w/ cornwalls for rears (space limitations). wish I had a receiver w/ 5 channel stereo. also find myself building up my music dvd (preferably DTS) collection. ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  20. & being an anarchist at heart I do hate paying sales tax, but usually the shipping is a wash on that, so that's a good deal.
  21. is that the ct-150 sub? someone was inquiring on that i think under the powered sub section. how's it blend w/ the klf? we'll have to see how the rsw sound by may.
  22. flas, were u so enraged that u missed my post some acknowledgement would have been nice ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!
  23. flason, sounds like a great set-up. i'd get a C-7 before they're gone. if I had the room I would have gotten legends (yes the space is that tight). in hind sight, they have the bass impact I dig. doubt the new refs would be worth the extra $, wait & hassle for u, especially if u like the klf (which should be what really matters). & the new refs really haven't even been reviewed yet. but in my case, I will take a look at trading the rf-3 for the new rf-5 or 7(if it will fit) & the rc-7. should be a better match for the cornwall rears too. but will have to hear the new ones 1st. if I had legends I'm sure I wouldn't even consider it though for the extra $1k or so. i'd take the $ & get a good sub. like a new rsw in may (possibly). that would give u a pretty cherry & complete speak system. just my 1 cent ------------------ RF-3 (front), RC-3, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-15 sub Monsterbass 400 sub cables & Monster Z-12 speak wire Sony de935 a/v receiver Sony DVP-C650D dvdp Sony Trinitron 27" tv Technics dual cassette deck Technics direct drive turntable Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box rock on!

  25. not sure on just taking off the spikes, but that would take away the direct transfer to the floor some. I was talking vibration isolators (brightstar). but yea some absorbing platform would help, but u still have those darn bass waves hitting all over. good luck on your move
