  1. Hopefully your desk has a pretty good mass to it. Putting "blue tack" or any other non permanant wall mount compound; or perhaps vibrapods on your desk to dampen the interface to the desk would be a good idea. 12 or 14 gauge speaker wire at rADIO sHACK WILL NOT SET YOU BACK TOO MUCH EITHER. Good Rockin'
  2. I had the KSB 3.1 before my RB5s. The 3.1 are somewhat of a predesescor to the S-3. Pretty good sound with the 3.1 from my perspective. Maybe get the S-3 with a good sub or save money for separates. An enjoyable decision with the Klipsch options. Good Luck
  3. "Sleepy" is a good description of the B&W sound. They sound good but laid back. RF3 is the inexpensive way to enjoy the Reference sound. I use Sanus Steel stands with lead shot filling($ 170) for my RB5s. My sub is an Adire Audio Rava. You get a little lower bass with the RF3 in a non sub 2 channel setup.
  4. Inhereting is a bummer cause it genrally means one is listening to music elsewhere. If you are hard pressed look for a used "high current" used receiver at a local HIFI shop. My local one in Michigan had a used Rotell stereo reveiver for less than $ 400. You cannot afford good HT that doubles for 2 channel at $400. Awesome speakers! Keep em!
  5. I am just waiting for al the kids to go to sleep... Ma and Dad bought a top of the line console Motorola Stereo HIFI in 1959; 42 years ago this month...their Christmas present the year before i was born in 8-60. Mono woofer and 2 ways on the outboard thirds of the cabinet. Really impressive presence for Johnny Cash , Roger Miller, Herb Albert, Nat King Cole and others growing up. The brothers that baby sat me next door snuck over Jimmee, Yes, Who, Moody Blues, Byrds nd others in the late 60s and early 70s. Bing singing Christmas tunes tooo! I like my rig now but I do not know if it is age or nastalgia my Cds sound a bit fake compared to the vinyl I grew up with(have not had a vinyl rig in 9 years due to kids and stuff). Fantasies about a smoking analog front end will have wait until better economic times. My best to Ray(?) and others harmed by the current economics. Peace Merry Christmas
  6. Listen to both; they should both be reasonable well built.
  7. Sorry about your disappointment. I modified my system from 2 channel to entry level HT 3 years a go and really did not like the Kenwood HT receiver "guts". I now have a Sherwood Newcastle 5 x 125 power amp that weighs 70 pounds; the performance really cannot be compared.
  8. Sounddog, You are correct Outlaw Audio service and product performance are excellent. If I did not find a sweet deal on Sherwood Newcastle separates I would have bought the 1050. Unless you experience it; mail order often has better service than a store front. I have never heard of a customer that Outlaw did not bend over backwards to make them happy. I bought a Rava sub mail order from Adireaudio.com for $ 399 that is an excellent value and various accessories from Audioadvisor.com. Both companies staffs are very knowledgeable. Working with department stores or electronics superstores is almost always a frustrating experience(Sams or Costco are OK). The Outlaw 1050 is a very low risk mail order puchase.
  9. HTR is the "commidity" mass market line from Yamy. The RXV is a step up. I try to keep things simple and keep just one audio signal going through my preamp at a time; no video. My old Sony TV has only one S Video input so I use A Terk video switcher for about $40. Watts rating on receivers are deceptive; one of the more knowledgeable forum participants could probably comment better than I. Wattage needs to double for every 1 db increase in SPL as I remember. The availiable current for the dynamics of the source material is a factor in amp quality. Robustness of the transformer perhaps is more influential than manufacturer rated watts to aid in satisfying system sound quality.
  10. You have some real sound investment in speakers but the receiver choices you are considering may be limiting the performance of the Klipsch. Outlaw Audio 1050 was only $499 and is a robust high current 60 watts. It also has pre outs so you could add a power amp for th mains at another point in time.
  11. Welcome to your foray into a post Sony homogenous system. You may want to leave a note on your source component you use. I use a Sony DVP S530P DVD player for HT and really like it. It outputs DTS to my Sherwood Newcastle HT preamp quite nicely. Good luck with yyour new habit.
  12. I really think the term bookshelf speakers does not do the RB5s justice. Perhaps "mini monitor" or "cookin' shelf" speaker would be a more respectful designation. I like the chance to tweak stands for the first time. I have never had a smaller high output speaker before, the non resonant stand is important to get the most out of them. I have the Sanus Steel 24 inch stands with 20 lbs of lead shot per stand. Even at high volumes the stands vibrate just a minimal amount. I could add sand to take up some of the airspace in the vertical columns; but it probably would have little effect and be a bit of a mess in the family room. I started out using the RB5s with a Kenwood HT receiver after demoing them with Rotel separates at the store. I now have Newcastle separates which are a dramatic improvement over the HT receiver. Never underestimate the effect of high quality power with the RB5s!
  13. I kind of define politicians as self important; statesman as being selfless. Clinton was a hec$ of a politician. I am just hoping Bush and his team turn out to be the best statesmen we have had in the past 60 years.
  14. Hump, I meet only a few people from Ark. Most have very limmitted fond comments abount Bill and Hillary. Would it not be noble of a public servant to go home to their home state to run for office? Would Hillary have been able to win a senate seat in Ark?
  15. VH-1 has a 1997 interview and a couple of live accoustic songs on this morning. I would expect it to be replayed quite a bit. These audio video rarities always take place when I am having problems with VHS recording. UGH! I could have listened to George more; I have been looking for the reissue of "All Things Must Pass" at a discount, I will just go pay retail this weekend. My roommate in college 20 years ago had the "Concert for Bangladesh" I have never found a CD of this. Does anyone have it?
  16. I really like college football through the HT. Some commercials are very impressive.
  17. I really enjoy listening to my RB5s and reading the Heritage discussions. You guys give me great ideas to ponder for future Klipsch purchases. I am amazed Q Man has room for all of the speakers. I am probably a few years away from acquiring the space(negotiating with my wife to get "refridgerator" size speakers) to try Belles or Lascalas(K Horns probably would not work in my current rooms). Thanks
  18. The PS Audio product line is very impressive, but I cannot afford their equipment at this time. There was a comment somewhere I cannot remember where somone used a high value computer surge protector from "Sola" for audio with some success. I used equipment from this company in a very old building to provide clean power to a CAD system in 1985 and never had a problem. I think this may be an interesting less expensive alternative to investigate.
  19. Ray, True, Nixon was a criminal. My great uncle used to tell us before Watergate; if McCarthy did not run the communist witch hunt, Nixon would have. Vince Foster's death and other suspicious and amoral incidents in the past 8 years certainly comprimised the integrity of the office of the president. Blaming Bush for the economy is so strange. It makes so little sense. My opinion is that the economy is heavily influenced by consumer confidence and personal & corporate spending. Being involved in the Auto industry since 1982, in the past 2-3 years I have seen the least amount of corporate investment in major capital items( that would have 7-10 years usefull life) in over 10 years. Hopefully there will be some depreciation incentives in the stimulis package to get "Cororate America" investing at home. The Peso is currently very strong against the dollar and euro due to all of the investment of foreign currency(primarily dollars) in Mexico. With a few exceptions(Reagan?), presidents generally are either victims or benificiaries of economic conditions; they do not shape them to a large degree.
  20. Kevin, I thought you said you were going to get the RF-7s. What changed your mind?
  21. It was a good thing I was deer hunting or I would have jumped all over that. Of course it is only 7 weeks since I bought my Sherwod Newcastle amp and preamp and my wife would have killed me. I live in Livonia Michigan and would have been close. I am glad I was not tempted! Good luck "Shape", a fine addition ot the Klipsch collection.
  22. Do not throw Ray a "hanging curve ball"; he has the experience, resources and time to sweat the details more than most people on the forum. Ray, You keep us all honest and well informed. Thanks Rick
  23. If your Technics CD player has a digital output an outboard DAC is an option to consider. Several people on the Forum have MSB DACs. I really like my MSB Link II.
  24. I thought it was Ma"sushi"a electronics. Us plastics geeks would just use PTFE as an acronym; Teflon being the tradename not generally used by the snobby plastics geek. The plastic ABS is acrylonitile butadiene styrene( I am sure it is not spelled correctly). That is a mouthful! Polymer science generates at large amount of nasty vocabulary.
  25. I really am nuts over Klipsch speakers for music. The pre Reference subs were ok but I felt I needed to try something different. I really liked the musical nature of different M&K subs. They seemed really overpriced to me. A friend of mine had a Paradigm Servo 15 that was very impressive but again way out of my price range of $550 maximum. My Adire Audio Rava sub, purchased mail order, sounded closest to the M&Ks for only $399. I do not have the equipment to objectively test the performance in my listening room but I am very pleased subjectively. Have any other posters used Adire Audio products? I find the "Rava" to be a great value.
