  1. wish I had this information when I tried the ti mids. Fortes are resting for now....juiced up over LaScalas currently, just ordered fastracs from Dave for them....but Moray James has me thinking about klf 20's I have sitting too....too many choices aint good but its all alot of fun!...bet those Fortes sound mighty fine John....take care.
  2. definitely will be moving the 20's out and playing with them in the near future after reading this. Moray you bought ti mids from me a while back...were they for your klfs?...not to get off subject but before I start modding the 20's would like to hear feedback on your experience with these.
  3. This is interesting Moray, I found the bass in the 20's kind of resonant and non distinct (atually slightly plastic sounding to me) and set them aside. I have been thinking of them as a upgrade/renewal project but the bass issue haunts me....maybe this is the answer.
  4. I could feel a good bit of vibration on the back panel so thought I would address it. My reasoning was that is the area the woofer slot fires at first so alot of energy is present there....anyway the panels I added definitly reduced the vibration in that area alot. I tried to build up the cabinets without making them too heavy to move around....but they are still a work in progress.
  5. by the way sootshe your speakers look amazing.....nice work....do you think the port mod changed tuning in upper bass any?
  6. I have also added additional 1/4" of mdf to the entire sides of mine with another layer of 1/2" mdf over that . I only thickened the cabinet 2/3 up from the bottom with the 1/2" mdf to cover the bass bin...lots of screws and glue. Another thing I did was add dynamat on the rear of the cabinet with a 1/2" layer of ply over that and another layer of 1/2 " ply slightly smaller over that...so 2 layers on back with dynamat underneath. I finished the sides/top and some of front with oak veneer. If I knew how I would post pics. All of this did make a huge improvement in the sound quality but can't seem to get that last little resonance removed. I noted in prior post that I may remove the braces that I also have in the bin and see that helps lower the resonance frequency. sootshe do the sides of you bins still vibrate at louder levels? just curious.
  7. on the Krall cd its very noticable on track 5 when her vocals come in at start of song...less so on track 2 beginning and very slightly track 1 as well as some other spots in other couple of tracks on cd...its funny this is a great sounding cd to me, especially piano tones which you would think would show the resonance also . I do see where the energy at the frequencies in question could give a speaker some trouble and i do notice it on my fortes but in a more natural way...just seems too excessive and weird on my LaScalas....or I'll say it sticks out to me as odd sounding on the ls. Thanks for you interest and looking forward to your further thoughts.
  8. My reasoning for beefing up the cabinets was to improve bass/midrange quality...which has worked for the most part. I have/had no notion of getting more or lower bass from my LaScalas. I run a quality subwoofer with my La Scalas for bass extansion below 50hz. I do not use tone control or augment bass in any other fasion, I think the LaScalas bass is phenominal in its quality with power thats comparible to live music, The sub just completes the package. My only issue is with some upper bass/lower midrange resonance I cant put my finger on that some listening material stimulates...like the lower register of Dianna Kralls voice (girl in the next room cd) sometimes....it may be something I just have to live with but am hoping someone here relates and has found a solution if any exist.
  9. I am hearing this in my LaScalas that I have recently been upgrading the cabinets on. I hear a resonance on some material like Kralls voice sometimes and some guitar/upper bass guitar gets a little hooty or resonant sounding. When I listen to Metallica I get some strange resonance happening with the thick upper guitar sounds...almost sounds like an issue with sound reflections within the bass horn. I have added 3/4" more material to the bass bin sides as well as the typical wing brace inside the horn. I am also inclined to think the wing brace does tighten up the bass/mid bass but the resonance frequency is moved up higher and may make things worse in other ways. I am thinking oI may remove the wings and listen without them for a while...I was also thinking of a paintable sound deadener within the bass horn or part of it. I love my LaScalas with the exception of this issue on some material that i listen to. I also have had issues with the bass quality of klf 20's prior so some of this may be room related...although my Fortes were never as much of an issue. Would like to add that I have ALK universals and crites tweeter in these. Again they are fantastic sounding most of the time and If I could get this issue under control I would be floored by them( I am going to get Daves Fastracs for them soon though). Any thoughts or ideas on getting this resonance under control would be greatly appreciated.
  10. i could see where the ti tweeter units would be better matched with the Ti mids but i still heard an elevated level with the klipsch Ti mid diaphragms that i can't imagin going away with the crites Ti tweeter. My impression of my Al K. crosovers was of greater smoothness compared to stock especially in the mid area with better high frequency clarity. I would say to my ears that i would expect the stock crossovers to be even hotter with the Ti mid ? i may try the Ti mids again at some point down the road and i was going to buy the Crites tweeter diaphragms but he was/is out due to having alot of orders for these. I will say i have Jimmy Vaughn on right now and it is sounding outstanding and i'm feeling very content with these forte's as they are. I am running a Marantz pm11s2 integrated along with a McIntosh mvp 841 player. Its true that alot of the fun in this hobby is the fact that we all love music and sound but have such varied opinions of what great sound is.
  11. I installed klipsch titanium mid diaphragms in my forte's a couple of weeke ago and had been thinking they were too aggressive, and have a slight coloration or peakiness too them. I do feel that they sounded somewhat more open than before but could not live with the scewed sound character. I put the phenolics back in and too my ears are much smoother and "as one " with the tweeter. I may try the crites units some day but i think its clear to me now that the originals are really good.
  12. I recently added some thin dense self sticking foam craft material to the back of the midrange driver magnet so it would contact the back of the cabinet when installed. This uses the horn assembly as a brace taking alot of resonance out of the back panel when rapping with knuckles. I feel it improved the upper bass and cleaned up the bass in general. The back panel seemed to be the most resonant part of the enclosure on my fortes probably because of the large opening for the passive radiator and the radiator itself being so light weight. I made sure to use a thickness of material as to not be too tight causing damage to the horn when tightening down, just used enough to contact the back with a little compression of the foam material. This may have already been done and discussed here i don't know but thought it was worth posting. the lower portion of the back panel could use something too but i hate to add the bulk of a brace inside the enclosure and mess with volume.
  13. I purchased Forte crossover parts kit from Al this past December and can say that they were a nice upgrade for me. i feel that improvements were made in the overall balance of sound. Prior to the new xovers going in the sound quality was slightly dark with some uneven qualities in the upper mid frequencies that often went harsh at higher volumes. Now thay sound refined and detailed without losing the stark powerful quality that makes them special to begin with, and they never get out of control at higher listening levels. Al....i also mounted mine behind the terminal cup with good quality double sided foam tape with excellent results....Thanks Al for your quality design and support, I thought my Forte's were special to begin with but now they are just incredible. I would imagine your Forte II design will see similar benefits to what i have heard with my original Forte's and i would encourage anyone thinking about this upgrade to do so.
  14. Hey guy you should think about making the trip this Saturday ,would get to meet a great bunch of people thanks for the invite Mark, but i will be working saturday. I would love to hear your k-horns sometime though. hope all have a great time this weekend, take care.
  15. for what its worth i am responsible for the veneer work on these speakers, i was the owner prior to Mark. i used very nice quality oak veneer on the top and both sides with tung oil finish, replaced the woofer hatch with a oak veneer plywood, rope caulked the mid horns, they had stock modified x-overs when i sold them though. I would say they were the best loudspeaker i have ever owned. whoever buys them should be very happy. they are pictured in my avitar.
  16. i have been thinking about putting some kind of damping material on my Heresy II mid horn, not because of harshness though. i can feel some substantial vibrations when i touch the horn, especially the center channel heresy. i view it more as a weak point in the cabinet that could use some more solidity. i do detect a resonant quality from time to time on certain voices and suspect it is the plastic horn body being stimulated by the lower midrange frequencies. i would like to hear others thoughts on this. thanks
  17. if your interested in my 20-39 pci let me know, i'll start looking for a decent shipping container. thanks
  18. i happen to be selling my svs 20-39 pci. Its a terrific sub, i'm selling to purchase another svs model that is a more conventional box design( space issues in living room). its about 2 yrs old and well taken care of, i would like to get $400.00 for it, but am not crazy about trying to ship it because of its size. you can go to their site and check it out, this is the best sub i have ever owned, it will shake your room and flex your floors, but is very accurate for music as well.
  19. yup, Stevie was a rare talent indeed, we'll never see the likes of him again i'm afraid, can't help getting a little down thinking of the great recordings we'll never hear, or the progression he'd have made as a guitarist, i'll always regret never seeing him live, and have always thought how great it would have been to meet and talk with him. I have all the recorded material he's done i believe, i probably don't play them as often as i once did, but i still find them as amazing as ever. The feeling and power of the music that came from this man is simply unbelievable, rest his soul. Jimi Vaughn is also a tremendous artist, if you don't have any of his recordings your missing out on some great stuff, i like the sound of his recordings too, as i do most blues music. Jimi plays with great passion and a wicked tone, and a bit of a 50's/blues mix, check him out.
  20. tom, please check your pm's........T.Vincent
  21. hello, i am interested in getting a single Heresy II to use as a center. if anyone has one or knows somebody with one that they want to part with please let me know. i am also considering selling my NAD c-370 integrated amp for around $400.00 or trading it for a pair of Heresy II's. another option would be trading my RC-3 II for a single Heresy II. If someone is selling or would like to trade/work a deal, especially if you are near or in northeastern N.Y let me know..........thanks alot
  22. all is well at the new house, thanks for asking mark, take care of that foot, you probably hurt it moving huge loudspeakers around your house in the first place, klipsch are notorious for throwing toes out of wack!!!!!!beeee carefulllll. see ya t.vincent
