  1. I had a couple friends over last week to listen to my system and check out two of my for sale reel2reels. Now to put things into perspective these are two guys that travel to alot of the audio shows during the year, they also both have deep pockets!!! So I let them get use to hearing my setup for a few tunes then I broke out the Master tape dubs I have!!! To say the least they were blown away by what they were hearing to the point they bought both tape decks and asked where they could get more tapes from!!! They both have recently bought the Xilica 4080 DSP and started to learn about REW, needless to say they want my help with that, I gladly said I would help.

So I am thinking now that what I have thought for a long time is true, my system is sounding really as good as I thought. For these two guys who really don't know much about horn speakers and have a ton of cash in their systems, to give the praise they were giving just confirms everything that the members of this forum have known for a long time!!!

My bass section is not fully horn loaded, it's the mini punch (dual 12's) that were done by JWC a few years back and after running different ss amps on them, I'm sticking with the QSC on those.

Assuming that you've run them with SS exclusively at some point, what did you gain when you went to your current setup?  I think some of this for me might come down to my audio addiction and wanting to see some glowing tubes in a good looking amp for aesthetics.:D

That was a long time ago when my system was all SS. What I remember is the air created by tubes and the space between notes, that is what really stood out for me. Also the ability to change tubes to alter the sound slightly... At one time I was interested in the look of glowing tubes not anymore, now its all about the sound quality...

I've been interested in what a cost is no object set of crossovers would sound like. Someone have them built so I can come over and hear them, please!

I had them built years ago for my upgraded Khorns, after going all active I sold them for roughly half of what I had in them.

  4. So if your new pre amp uses 6SN7 tubes you can try the 6F8G tubes with an adapter which are better than any 6SN7 tube I ever heard. Or even better and what I use in my Rogue are the 6J5GT tubes with an adapter, they are the most linear octul tubes out there. You will need a quad though, they are exactly one half of a 6SN7 tube so 4 tubes and 2 adapters.

Got a new preamp to test out and all 4 tubes are 6SN7s which I have a lot of. I often read the "signal" tubes are the ones that matter the most when rolling tubes. Is that only in amps and not preamps? the manual states the following.....

So of those two choices above, right or left, which are going to have the greatest sonic impact?

Would this be a Rogue 99 by chance? If so the two tubes on the right side will have the greatest influence on sound quality, let me know if it is a Rogue I can help.

I have purchased 1/4 inch 2 track tapes that have been recorded directly from the master from a guy named Leslie Brooks. His company is

    https://analogaudioinc.com/

They dont list these for sale on his website but email him to get on his list. From time to time I get an email with available titles. Way more reasonable than other sources.

Leslie's tapes are awesome but he is pricey!!!

    Two questions I have :

    (1)  In your Type 45 and 2A3 comparison, did you ever get a chance to compare EML versions of each, directly, one to another??

    (2) How do you suppose the comparison would have gone if the single tube had to play the entire speaker/ music spectrum, and NOT as a narrow part in your quad amped system???

    Jeffery,

    (1) In this case no I was comparing NOS tubes not the EML tubes.

    (2) I did run just the 45 amp with NOS and EML tubes by itself before I went to an all active setup. Nothing ever sounded better to me until I went active.

Just so you know when I said quad amped I was including the subs, so in reality my system is tri amped.

Now, an EML Type 45 is a horse of a different color, and it performs well.  But its hundreds of dollars, isn't it? !! .

Now you are on to something, yes it cost more but you get what you pay for as you stated earlier they other 45's were cheaply made.

My system is quad amped so I have not trouble using a flea powered tube in my setup, at 118db the mid drivers in my system can be driven with a cell phone.

In my system the 2A3 did not sound anywhere close to the 45 and that's what I was referring to when I posted earlier.

I disagree.  There is virtually no difference in linearity between the two sets of curves.  Both are linear !!

Look at their curves more carefully, and if you can document the difference, I'd like to find out about this from you..

One has to define WHAT manufactured  Type 45 and 2A3 you are talking about, before making any blanket recommendation..

There are manufacturer's  differences, that extend well beyond the two different tube " types ", themselves. Eg : EML, vintage, bi-plate VS single plate, solid, mesh.

    Jeffrey

You should read my reply more closely, I did not recommend anything I said what I was using and what differences I heard between them...

What's the main differences in the tube characteristics between the 2a3 and the 45... 2a3 is capable of more output, correct?

The 45 tube is much more linear so the sound quality is much better...

I agree and I regret selling my Korneff 45. I ran it with EML solid plate 45's. NOS 45's paled in comparison. If you try them you will be AMAZED. FWIW, I preferred the solid plate over the mesh plate.

I too run the EML 45 Solid Plates nothing I've tried comes close to them, they just do everything better...

  12. I been using a Korneff 45 amp for years with my Khorns and nothing has ever sounded better to me. I had a 300B for years in the same set up then tried the 2A3, they did not compare to the 45 amp not even close...
