  1. While I am no Gary Biggs or Mark Eldridge, I have learned quite a bit from Mark and other "designers of car audio systems" that compete at a high level. Big obtrusive dashes are a big NO NO.....slimmer, shorter the better, and for speaker imaging (firing forward w/kick panels, or the like). Finally, maximize the distance between the listener and source and project balanced sound at ear level. OH, and don't copy a Trans Am design (lol).......too many obstacles, glass, and sharp angles to fight without performing "automotive surgery". Probably should have taken a course.........and saved a tremendous amount of time, money and energy. Of course, that's 1/2 the battle/fun of learning. I'll stay away from materials, and other details since I can go on and on and on!
  2. Welcome, and FYI, both my Grandmother and Mother had hearing loss at an early age (both w/implants age 50), but I am fortunate that my problem is listening impairment NOT hearing. (meant to be a joke). I agree that EQ can HELP to offset those frequencies where you are deficient, but depends on HOW SEVERE! My mother is 60/80 and despite my efforts to enhance the sound, she still cannot hear certain notes. Headsets work extremely well in comparing an "open" sound vs "enclosed". If you can discriminate between the (2), this will help you obtain what you seek. On the subject of EQ's, here's my position: I've always been an advocate of Equalizers in any form 5 band, 10 band, or 30 band (1/3 octave). Since acoustical environments differ, and the human ear is NOT perfect, some equalization is necesary, especially w/hearing impaired individuals IMO. Having said that, I cannot comment on which EQ would provide you the best cost/benefit. Maybe a 10 band can achieve what you are seeking, OR maybe you require more detail as in a 30 band. I would recommend listening to a system that has this level of flexibility.
  3. As Spock would say: "Fascinating".......thanks for sharing!
  4. Thanks guys, but it's like placing 10# of crap in a 5# bag........just not enough room in a trailer! Here's the HT system (not the Cornwalls)! Excuse the mess!
  5. I must say if I had gone a lifetime w/o hearing a set of Klipschorns, I would have been majorly dissappointed. I can see and understand the "responses" on those units. I've NEVER heard a set of speakers that had such a detailed-definitive center stage - WOW! Thanks for auditioning those Cornwalls Gary, as they confirmed my suspicions on my bass response issues. VERY NICE vinyl collection, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. You are welcome to visit me on the shore anytime, but I cannot match the hi-fi output your systems can achieve. FYI, still have an issue w/my preamp! Now a hum that comes and goes, and the M50 amp Bob @ Audio Clinic stated: PARTS NO LONGER AVAILABLE Looks like upgrade time down the road! Best wishes Mark
  6. Dean, I need to ask a question of you sir.........will try to get PM out later this evening Thanks Mark
  7. If it were me doing it all over, IN YOUR SHOES, I'd opt out for the Heresy's (12" vs 15" woofer), but will still produce the same "horn" effect for 1/2-2/3 price of Cornwalls. If space is an issue, you can't go wrong w/them. I refer to them as Cornwall Juniors[] Best of luck on your selection.
  8. E-filed w/Liberty, but still haven't received confirmation of acceptance by IRS yet! Which reminds me, THANKS, I have to followup!
  9. Owned by Fulmer (of Fulmer Helmets) and located in TN......been around for about 6-8 years. Thank you, and it has served me well. Sad part is, those Mac products are probably worth more than my entire setup INCLUDING car itself (lol) 145.0 db and its done fairly well in the SQ arena also! This vehicle is officially out of competition (retired).
  10. Actually, Memphis did this w/PEPSI truck (if you remember the commercial). Great advisement and marketing tool IMO..........SPONSORSHIP! Hmmmm......now maybe you just tipped me on to something there! Hey Amy............???????(lol) Like HK/JBL and JL's aggreement w/Unique Whips: http://manuals.harman.com/articlefiles/JBL/CAR/JBL%20Sponsors%20UnSips%20TV%20Show.pdf Back on topic, best wishes on your project, but from my perspective, I bought my Klipsch Cornwalls with the intent of them being a "lifetime investment", and still after 24 years, I won't give them up! Plain and simple, they still beat many units hands down.
  11. Thanks for the responses, and yes, I can lose the DBX and INR units, but my 10 band graphic EQ is definitely more effective than my parametric on the Preamp. You've told me what I needed to know!
  12. Yes sir, Distortion, and another good point I overlooked.......the more components, the greater the potential for noise being introduced into the system. In today's world, are Integrated's now BETTER, as opposed to the vintage separates that were available years ago. Thanks Doc
  13. I cannot clearly state one way or the other, so I'll ask the forum faithful. The Preamp/Amplifiers I am using are rated @ .003 THD @ 1V, however, if I loop my outboard devices in TAPE 1, I can enhance the sound. Now these units are roughly rated @ .01% THD @ 1V and .1% THD ?? respectively. The 10 band EQ is primarily used most of the time, but I negate the DBX and Impulse Noise Reduction units when not playing vinyl. There are some subtle audible differences, but my question is: Are the benefits gained from the peripheral devices a positive trade-off, or are they a detriment due to decreased efficiencies in those separates. Kinda curious about the responses. I must say the I find separates a much more viable option as opposed to Integrated units (no offense), but should the combined components be of equal ratings , etc. KISS please, since you are NOT dealing with a highly-technical individual (lol)
  14. Yes indeed, they sure look purdy! Love those cane covers!
  15. Damn teaser pics...........[] MMMMMM.......................drool![] I'll trade ya!!!!!!
  16. Good/Bad on the hatchbacks.............since I own one (lol) GREAT SPL machines, but too much glass (and large dash) deflection for SQL(at least my T/A), however they do throw that sub-bass forward. A hard to beast to tame IMO.
  17. Well I thought $2000 amplifiers were expensive, and $1500 speakers, but then I immersed myself into the signatures of KLIPSCH FORUM members, and am now humbled. WOW......2-channel hi-end is even WORSE! And Audiogon......OMG, outrageous! Actually, automotive audio technology has evolved dramatically over the past 15 years. YOU CAN ACHIEVE that same sound if you are willing to do what needs to be done.
  18. U stole my thunder (lol)......exactly my thoughts going forward on an HT system
  19. Just thought I'd post up pics of both the old and new network caps from Bob Crites:
  20. MON DEUX, that's INSANE.......now, I can understand 16V automotive requirements, but for Home Theatre?????? Thank GOD for surge protectors (lol), as I can imagine what a nice spike would do! Hey ear, now I know you're a CONFIRMED JL man, but how do you think a 15" JBL Pro Power (GTI, same diff) would work @ 6ohms in these Cornwall cabinets. Forget about the network for a moment, but I think the 3/4 ply would be strong enough to withstand the Sound pressure?
  21. This R&R band had some hits, but never really did make the big time during the late 60's - mid-1970's. The lead pianist was Ian Hunter, led by guitarist Mick Ralphs. FYI, Ralphs started the band BAD COMPANY!
  22. Mac and HK both make a HU, but both are very simplistic w/NO bells or whistles. Basically, a $1500 preamp IMO, but very clean as one would expect. My competition(now Event director) still runs a Mac w/his Dynaudios, and my IASCA Team JBL Firehawk friend (same car design) a Harmon-Kardon unit HU w/JBL GTI/GTO gear and the NEW MS8 7.1 SS unit. This unit (available early spring) will run about $800 from what I understand, but the prototype I heard is SCHWEEET. The Mac and HK units are TOP NOTCH, but not a good cost/value ratio, considering what you can purchase for the same dollars (i.e. Pioneer P9, or the Clarion DRZ9255)
  23. I'm pretty much up on all that stuff.......and just look at MBQuartz SOLD how many times in the past 5 years, and what NEW technology? NONE! Living on the namebrand! Yes, most everything is made in China, Korea, or Taiwan these days (spec'd out and assmbly line, mass-produced, and all w/cheap labor). Hell, we probably couldn't afford these products if they had to be made in the USA or Canada. I too, like the older PPI, ARC audio, US Amps, American Bass, Crystal, Zapco, etc. equipment I've only seen 1-2 setups w/Cadence within the last couple years. For the price, Memphis Mclass products aren't too bad for SQ.
  24. Sure enough....maybe the PT gave it away, and tried to remove the face! Your just too clever! WATCH OUT NEXT WEEK!
