  1. I own a number of Sony CD changers and DVD components. I had two of their receivers which I replaced with vastly superior Outlaw 1050s. They seem to make a good mechanical component but I use optical/coax connections and external DACs because their internal processors leave much to be desired. My experience is they have been better mechanically than sound quality wise. 2. Anyone have any experience with replacing the regular feet on Klipsch subs with spikes?
  3. Are you sure you were not hallucinating? I think ES stands for "Extra Sizzle"
  4. The best HT receiver both sound quality and value wise is the Outlaw 1050, available only online at www.outlawaudio.com. High end quality at a mass production price ($499.).... you save big time by buying direct ... great customer service... Only negitive in my mind: does not have Prologic II which could be usefull if you have a large investment in videotapes.
  5. What is your source equiptment? CD player, etc. I agree with the previous post ... if you have a lot of reflective surfaces you will need absortion and diffusion material .... Klipsch speakers have very sharp and distinct highs ... this is both an advantage and a disadvantage .... what is the surface like at the first point of reflection? .... if its reflective thats a good point to start to experiment.

  7. Dennon spends a great deal on advertising, on its sales/distribution network, etc. The stores it sells through have significant markups, have to pay for the cost of inventory , expensive real estate, salesman's salaries, commisions, field reps, etc. Outlaw sell's direct over the internet eliminating or greatly reducing cost and overhead - thus greater value for the consumer. Then there's the sales tax factor in many locations. However, you're right you can not hear it in a showroom which may or may not offer a great environment for comparison, by the way. Yet in almost all retail cases you can return items within a specified time frame for a full refund ( especially important with speakers). While Outlaw's customer service is FAR more knowledgeable and helpful than most store personnel, having a live relationship with a knowledgable sales person if you can find a good one is worth a lot also. Difficult decision.
  8. Funny how coincidence sometimes really surprises you. After posting the above, I left this site to visit the Audio Asylum site - High Efficiency Speaker section and there is a posting on removing "bug screens" from a driver. One comment stated that removing the bug screen was like "lifting a veil"! This message has been edited by soundog on 11-06-2001 at 06:09 PM
  9. I need to get a digital camera one of these days ... they don't look much different than the 55Ms except they are heavier with a bigger magnet ring and no brand name or other markings ... they screw into the horns the same as the 55s. Internally they dont have a screen over the diaphragm like the 55s. I installed one and A-Bed it with the 55 (set preamp to mono and rotated the balance control from one speaker to the other) ... sounded like a veil had been lifted ... not sure this is because of a bigger magnet or the fact that they are replacing 20 plus year old drivers. 10. The quanity of watts (65/ channel for each of 6 channels) in the Outlaw 1050 may not be as much as some but the quality is very substantal. I have two: one with my Heritage Speakers (Klipschorns & LaSclas) and one with the now discontinued Klipsch THX Home Theater System. This receiver got excellent reviews in a number of publications as well as on www.audioreview.com. It is true that this receiver does not have the latest: Dolby ProLogic II or DTS neo but for $499. it is an incrediably good receiver with sound quality on a par with much more expensive higher end receivers.
  11. A few months ago I replaced the K77 tweeters in my Khorns with NOS E-V T35 "A" stock replacements. One of the original tweeters in these 20 year old speakers had a raggy edginess and thus I realized a very significant improvement (Im still procrastinating over replacing the diaphragms in the ones I replaced). I got these tweeters on the web from Layne Audio as suggested by someone on this site (thanks!). I had a long and interesting conversation with Layne during which they persuaded me to also order a pair of K55 replacements (which they billed as "very high quality}. It took them until this week to get their shipment and fill my order. The drivers had no name on them and had bigger magnets and were heavier than the K55Ms they were replacing. They are incredible! What clarity, what presence, what dynamics! And they only cost $69. each! If Klipsch is looking for a supplier of K55 drivers these are superb! 12. Have bought several items from both with only one problem which was quickly adjusted. Great prices!
  13. The Outlaw 1050 6.1 receiver ( www.outlawaudio.com ) goes for $499. and will more than hold it's own with any of the above. Does not have PLII like the Dennon 3802, however. This message has been edited by soundog on 10-29-2001 at 06:25 PM
  14. You will have to experiment with absorption and diffusion material. The point of first reflection usually benefits from a diffusion treatment. Drapes over windows can help minimize reflections off glass. I'd try hanging some quilts (or similar material)around the room to test out absorption treatments ... old egg cartons stapled (bottom up) to a thin piece of plywood or thick piece of cardboard can provide some make-shift diffusion. Also does redirecting (repositioning) the speakers make any difference? This could give you some hints about whats wrong. Of course all this stuff would have to be replaced with commercial (better looking) acoustical material. (Try parts express) However, none of it is usually acceptable in the living room from a decorator standpoint, in which case, you'll have to get creative with curtains, wall tapestries, etc. Bookcases with different size books often provide a good diffusion effect.
  15. Why use a sub with a 2 channel pair of Khorns? The Khorn's bass cann't be beat and except for a few musical oddities covers 99.9% of all recorded music bass. I only use a sub with my Khorns and LaScalas for LFEs on DVDs.
  16. I have 4 concert LaScalas that I purchased off the internet. They have the handles but no metal trim. They were beat up somewhat when I got them. One set I got for $300. with a blown woofer that I replaced on ebay with an exact match for $57. I used wood fill and some corner molding on the front and repainted them black. They look and sound great.
  17. Ask if you can bring home cables and compare. Most stores allow returns within a certain number of days. If you use a credit card you won't have to lay out any money. I hook one brand to the left channel and one to the right and set the pre-amp to mono and switch back and forth to compare. I've found some small differences but not a great deal. I'd recommend spending money on other components first, unless you have money to burn.
  18. I'm having good success with the combination of a tube pre-amp and transistor amp. The tubes do a great job with the mids and highs and the transistors provide the oomph needed for the lows. 19. Let me get this straight ...your wife won't let you sell a woofer? My wife would say "What is that old thing and why are you saving it and could you put it in the garage? And if I told her it was a speaker she would say "Don't you have enough odf those already"? This message has been edited by soundog on 10-24-2001 at 02:08 PM
  20. Interesting ....dealers don't have them yet but they are already for sale on ebay. Wonder how this happens. Seems like the black/gray market moves faster than the usual distributon chain!
  21. Older Klipsch designs are listed under classics on this site, each design contains a list of "what matches this product". In the case of the KLF20 only a center channel match is listed but you might compare the spec sheets of these and other speakers and try to match internal components. On the other hand, there is much experience on this site and I am sure that some people will have experimented with various combinations and report on same. Front channel (left, center, right) matches tend to be more critical than surround matches. This message has been edited by soundog on 10-22-2001 at 04:13 PM
  22. It seems to me that Klipsch has always offered excellent value ... consistently beating out the competition. I don't believe there has ever been a better speaker for the money than the Klipschorn. I think the same is true of most of the recent Klipsch designs ... they are designed to compete in today's market and offer great value for the consumer. Today's market for all consumer products is over hyped with too much emphasis on relatively unimportant features, over bloated claims and gimmickry. Appearance is more important than reality. The consumer tends to buy the package, the name, rather than the substance. Thus a plain tee shirt costs a fraction of the price of the same tee shirt with an over hyped designers name. In this world of image over substance Klipsch is doing fine.
  23. I have an OutlawAudio.com 1050 6.1 receiver that I would recommend for both music and HT. So do a number of AV publications. It was recently reduced to $499.
  24. As you can se from below, I run pairs of speakers off a number of channels in each of my systems. I set the Outlaw 1050 to 4 ohms and each of its six 65 watt channels work admirably (100 watts is not always better than 65). I have discovered that if they do cut out at high volume the cause has always been one tiny stray strand of speaker wire very close to or touching the opposite terminal. This short doesnt cause the receiver to kick out at low levels but does at very high levels (usually DVD explosions). While I have some supplemental amplification available (via some old receivers I have)for the extra speakers, I am yet to hook it up because everything seems to be working so well. If I make sure all my connections are perfect, the 1050s dont kick out at even deafening levels (probably as much to do with Klipsch high efficiency as the Outlaws stability). On another note, I agree it would be good to have an equipment section in profiles rather than listing with comments. I do think equipment listings should be available because they are important when dealing with questions such as this one. Actually I would like to set up a web site with pictures.
