  1. Thanks for your reply, it confirmed my thoughts that the vibrations of the woofer might be too much for a spade connector, solder is secure. Considering that the first (Jensen) woofers lasted 46 years, I won't be around to change the new units.
  2. I am replacing my K-33s on my early 1960s Khorns. Should I replace all the wiring at the same time? Should I solder the wire to the new woofers or use spade connectors? Thanks, Richard
  3. I have examined one and there is no K33 on the magnet, only on the left hand side of the label. I wonder who is manufacturing these, as there is no identifier such as "E".
  4. Thank you for your quick reply and explaining the RoHS compliance. I need a K33 to replace an old Jensen woofer in my Khorns. I very recently purchased a "new" woofer on Kijiji for only $80, but was nervous that it was not really a K33. Now I see an identical woofer on eBay, and you have verified that this is a Klipsch K33. If I can get this for <$100 I will replace both woofers, as there may be differences between the very old Jensen woofer and the new model.
  5. Is this really a Klipsch K33 woofer? I have never seen that label on the side of the woofer on my original woofers. http://cgi.ebay.ca/BRAND-NEW-KLIPSCH-15-INCH-WOOFER-CORNWALL-La-SCALA_W0QQitemZ140395028334QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item20b0321f6e#ht_500wt_1182
  6. I blew the K-33 in my Khorns last week. Is this e-bay speaker really a Klipsch K-33? http://cgi.ebay.ca/Vintage-KLIPSCH-Fifteen-Inch-15-Woofer-Working-Well_W0QQitemZ250505430509QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item3a534985ed&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 I need to complete this inexpensively, otherwise I would purchase a pair of Crites cast frame woofers. Thanks for your help,
  7. Turn up the volume, close your eyes and enjoy then watch the video.
  8. I have owned a Marantz PM7200 for 4+years and love it, but drive very efficient speakers, Khorns, La Scalas and Cornwalls. Recently replaced the Marantz with a McIntosh MA2275 integrated tube amp, so the Marantz is now driving my bedroom system, vintage Coral speakers with AlNiCo magnets, once again efficient speakers. I won't be selling it as this is a keeper. The price on the link, in your posting, is a Canadian price. I believe that this unit sold for $499 or less in the USA. I believe that you should pay half, or less, of the MSRP for used electronics. In class "A/B" the amp delivers 95 wpc. This is a great budget amp for the money, however the power may not be sufficient to drive your Epic speakers rated at 800 watts. Call the toll free line at D&M, Marantz, and ask them for advice. I always ran the Marantz in class "A" mode, 25 wpc. Found the bass full and tight with my speakers. Highs are very detailed and separation is great. Reviews say that it should warm up for 20 minutes to achieve the full effect of class "A". I use a fan to keep it cool, as the transistors run "full on" in this mode. This amplifier has phono inputs, however the phono is not as full and rich as the phono section of my new amp. This amp also has A and B speaker switches. This is great if you have multiple sets of speakers. The remote control is basic; On/Off, Mute, Volume and Source are the only keys which operate the PM7200. This is similar to the remote for the McIntosh. This unit is very popular in Europe, where 2 channel audio is still very popular. Note: If you purchase this unit read the manual. The unit must be off to change the mode from class "A" to class "A/B". It is not recommended to drive 2 pair of speakers simultaneously, unless you are using 16 ohm speakers.
  9. With plans of retirement in 2009/10, I decided that I need to complete my system soon. I added the following: Klipschorns - May vintage Pioneer tuner - August vintage Coral speakers - August power meters - November RG expander - December McIntosh MA2275 integrated tube amplifier - December For 2009 I will stop upgrades/additions, as I believe that my system is finished, with Khorns, La Scalas, Cornwalls and McIntosh. Excess equipmrnt will be used to assemble a bedroom sound system. Resolution - to stop the madness.
  10. I have read and listened to all of your advice in the past, and I need it again. There is a <1 year old McIntosh MA2275 (integrated tube amplifier, 2 channel @ 75 wrms) available locally for $5,500 Cdn. (about $4,500 US) I can only compare the McIntosh to my solid state class A amplifier (25 wrms/channel). I am confident that the McIntosh will sound better when I do the audition, but is it a good choice? Is the price right? Am I better off spending almost double for a Juicy Musie Blueberry and PCats? I will be using it to drive my Klipshorns, La Scalas and Cornwalls (one pair at a time). My listening pleasure is light rock, female vocals and classical. Thanks for your comments and Merry Christmas to all.
  11. Thank you to all for the feedback. I really needed to be talked out of this purchase. I recently completed a pair of Khorns, and must move my La Scalas and Cornwalls to make room for them. I really didn't need two pair of KG2s. Most recent purchase was a pair of vintage Coral speakers with alnico magnets for $31. These have a 12" woofer, 5" mid and a tweeter, all in very good condition, except the cabinets are a bit scratched. I have speakers for 8 corners of my livingroom, but the livingroom only has 3 corners! Thanks again - Richard
  12. Are 4 KG2 speakers for $250 a good deal? I live only 30 minutes from the seller. They have the passive radiator on the back. Thanks, in advance, for your input.
  13. Can I replace an old pair of K-77s with K-77Ms in Khorns, or do I need to change something on the crossover? What give a better sound in Cornwalls, the original alnico K-55 with a B crossover, or if I changed to a K-53 with a B3 crossover? The capacitors would be upgraded in either case. Thanks, in advance, for all of your great advice.
  14. According to the attached link, "twice as loud" requires a 10 db increase, which requires 10 times the power. http://www.analogrules.com/dbwatts.html
  15. This was a whole 3.5 miles each way, and in Canada that was 5.5 kilometers for a total trip of 11 km. It was grewling, but was worth it in the end. Seriously, I drove to the USA for my Cornwalls, about 20 km for my La Scalas, and 11 km for my Khorns. Life just gets easier.
  16. I have just picked up my first set of Khorns. What an amazing road trip, I had to drive a full 3.5 miles to get these. Who would think that I could find Khorns in Canada, let alone in Stoney Creek (population 60,000)! These are the Decorator series, and require a lot of work, but it will be a great summer project. Cabinets are rough, and were painted white (yikes). One tweeter is blown. I have already been in contact with Bob Crites. (What a wealth of information that man pocesses!) I may need an older tweeter, pre 1966, or 2 tweeters and 2 type A crossovers. Hope that I can find the older style (shiny metal) K-77 tweeter. I have no clue how my little apartment will house Khorns, La Scalas and Cornwalls; may have to down size my system. What am I saying, I would rather move to give my Klipsch family more room to spread out. I will post pictures when I start the project this summer.
  17. Bob Crites, I am sending you a PM. - Richard
  18. According to the Harmon Kardon HK730 manual, it states that the unit will accomadate ONE pair of 4 ohm speakers adequately, but not to hook up a second pair of speakers. See page 4. http://manuals.harman.com/HK/HOM/Owner%27s%20Manual/HK730%20om.pdf
  19. My 1993 La Scalas have the AL-3 crossover network, and the 9 digit serial number, on a "different" Klipsch label. The label is not the commonly seen label, but Klipsch infomed me that it was used when my speakers were manufactured. The 9 digit S/N was used from 1990 - 1997, and the AL-3 crossover was used for part or all of this period. My speakers are not industrial or professional. Date Code: DOY Y1Y2 #### Example 123391234 123rd day of 1993
  20. I am intrigued at the high price commanded by Tannoy speakers. I have only read about them, and do not know anything about their sound. I can't comprehend how such a small HF horn would deliver large sound. My favourite, based on appearance, the Westminister Royal SE (a little expensive). Have a look at the great wooden flair at the front. Their manual gives a great sketch on the rear folded horn sound path. http://www.tannoy-speakers.com/s.php?product=138&title=Westminster+Royal+SE&s=27
  21. I am looking for a little advice and direction before I bid on a couple of items, listed on E-Bay, only 20 minutes from my residence. I know that these are Altec speakers (not Klipsch), but I am confident that some of you have experience with these drivers. The speaker package is a total of 6 items: pair of crossovers, pair of wooden horns and a pair of 15" Altec woofers in horn cabinets. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Altec-Lansing-Vintage-System-Wi-Edgar-Horns-Very-Rare_W0QQitemZ300205589864QQihZ020QQcategoryZ50597QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I know nothing about tube amps except that I should expect to spend some money on a tune up, caps etc. The listed tube amplifier is a Motorola El84 6bq5. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Motorola-El84-6bq5-Tube-amplifier-very-clean_W0QQitemZ300205598807QQihZ020QQcategoryZ50593QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Appreciate any comments, Richard
  22. Congratulations on your new La Scalas. Is the cherry wood oil finshed or lacquered?
  23. Thank you to Craig and Bill for your quick replies. Craig, your commet on the price has helped me to decide not to audition or purchase the EICO amplifier. I might hold off for a Scott 299. It will cost more, but I know how the forum members regard the Scott. My Marantz is only 3 years old; I love the sound and the features; I am in no hurry. Richard
  24. Your advice is requested. I have an opportunity to locally purchase an EICO 2080 tube integrated amplifier for $300. I know nothing about the EICO, except that I am told that it works and is all original. Of course, I would ask to listen to it first, to ensure that it is absent of hum and noisy pots. Is this a desirable amplifier at this price? Will this be an improvement over my Marantz PM 7200 solid state integrated amplifier? My Marantz is switched to Class A output at 25 watts per channel. I am using it to run La Scala and Cornwall speakers, (one set at a time). Thanks for your advice, Richard
