  1. It was the amp. It just went poof when I plugged it in. Dang warranty is out by one year. Klispch can't replace it until ($190) DECEMBER! Definitely last one (Klipsch) I'll buy.
  2. Hi, I have a (until today) GREAT little RPW10. I unplugged it as always when I left town. When I returned today and powered it up it would not power up. Blown fuse. Any fuse I place into the unit blows immediately. Any clues before.when I take it in for repairs? as always, thanks so much for any advice.
  3. hey Bruno- I have a Klipsch rw10D sub coupled with Monitor Audio Silver R6 in the front and my old Klipsch KG3.2 as surrounds. The sub really is only there for ultra low & punch as the rs6 are really smooth & musical down to 40hz. I love the Rf82 but the RS6 is as musical a speaker as I have ever heard foir less than a grand. I made the purchase on a great deal and could not be happier. I am saving up for rfx surrounds now. As for cheap but tasty pre/pro - amp - receiver gear you simply can't beat Outlaw for their price/performance. http://www.outlawaudio.com/ Not sure what you are looking for in feature set but they a great deal on their (soon to be discontinued) 990 pre/pro right now. I have older 950 pre/pro & 750 amp. Again i could not be happier (I do not have a room for 7.1) for the $$. IU have not heard them but their LCR speakers also have great reviews. although, you rally can't go wrong with the RF series either.
  4. I'm partial to hearing female vox as they can be really colored by systems/speakers midrange. Bonnie Raitt's "nick of Time is good, Kate Bush, Allison Krause, Emmylou Harris ... Tool's recordings, especially the song Anemia from that CD has a LOT of complex bass/kick drum work that can really tax your bottom end for clarity, response, and tone. Listen to it LOUD :-) Their latest CD 10,000 Days' track "Vicarious" (at the end) taxes the bottom as well. Peter Gabriel's "So" is just an amazing sounding record- so good that it sounds pretty good on anything, but if you are familiar with it you can really test details like reverb decay, separation, and dynamics. Telarc's recordings are also great - I LOVE the series they did with Fred Fennel (and especially the Holst Suite in E flat with "the bass drum heard round the world"!). Awesome "classical" recordings with a ton of dynamics. Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales is an excellent recording as is Lyle Lovette's I Love Everybody. His voice is just so colorful- with a great recording that details each instrument "behind" his vocal. of course re-mastered Aja and Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" are astounding and a great way to judge depth and separation King's X's "dogman" has about as much very bottom end as I have ever heard on a pop recording. I don't know how they got that much low frequency compressed & on there. It will push your sub for sure. Somebody already mentioned the Stereophile discs - they are superb.
  5. http://www.audioholics.com/news/industry-news/blue-jeans-strikes-back interesting especially this paragraph: After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1985, I spent nineteen years in litigation practice, with a focus upon federal litigation involving large damages and complex issues. My first seven years were spent primarily on the defense side, where I developed an intense frustration with insurance carriers who would settle meritless claims for nuisance value when the better long-term view would have been to fight against vexatious litigation as a matter of principle. In plaintiffs' practice, likewise, I was always a strong advocate of standing upon principle and taking cases all the way to judgment, even when substantial offers of settlement were on the table. I am "uncompromising" in the most literal sense of the word. If Monster Cable proceeds with litigation against me I will pursue the same merits-driven approach; I do not compromise with bullies and I would rather spend fifty thousand dollars on defense than give you a dollar of unmerited settlement funds. As for signing a licensing agreement for intellectual property which I have not infringed: that will not happen, under any circumstances, whether it makes economic sense or not. good for them!

    RF-82

Well I got the RS 6's. And man they are killer. I can't compare them to the RF 82's which may sound excellent as well, but these things sound wonderful. The mid range is superb and hI barely need the RW10D, and would not really miss it for music. The KG 3.2 are now my surrounds (but really bad WAF) and the room itself has issues but the sound of good recordings in stereo, and music DVD (this week it was Porcupine Tree "Arriving Somewhere" and Allman Bros live at the beacon Theatre) sound terrific. Not to laud other brands so loudly here but I did want to say how good these speakers sound.

    RF-82

OK the RS6s came today (new in box- 700 bucks, all shipping etc. included). Need to get some better cable, bi-wire, & burn them in. Will report back. Anticipation ...

    RF-82

thank you all so much for the advice! Great group. I think however in the end I am going to buy a pair of Monitor Audio RS6 int eh box new for a really good deal. I heard these once at a friend's neighbor's a few years ago and I was blown away by the detail. I'll let you know how that turns out. Thanks again!!

    RF-82

i guess I should state that any "new" room will be more square as opposed to bigger. I would expect a 14 X 14 more or less. I have no probs with volume, 165 watts and a Klipsch "anything" should be good. I also have an opportunity for a pair of Monitor Audio rs6 in box. And the WAF - Decisions decisions....

    RF-82

at this point in time a very small room- 10 X 18 with open ends (e.g. stairway & opening to dinning room on one end & kitchen on other) which makes it effectively 10 X 30 with 12' vaulted ceiling. Now I expect this to get bigger (e.g. a house move) in the next year or two. FWIW, the RW 10D is barely running 1/2 power now in the room with the kg3.2s. thanks

    RF-82

Hi all- VERY late to this thread but I have comparison question. I am looking at an RF-35, and RF 82, and RF-7 and even a pair of RF-62. There are 2 dealers & a 2nd hand guy. I will be driving these with Outlaw 950 pre/pro and Outlaw 750 amp coupled with an RW10D sub. I may add the KG 3.2s as surrounds in the future but for now in the small room, 2.1 is what I am listening to- and 90% music. I love how clean and neutral the Outlaw gear is for the $$. I wanted to know which of the speakers above would you consider most neutral and a better match for the sub? I listen mostly to hard rock/metal but a considerable amount of acoustic, classical and a little jazz. With 165 watts per/ch and the sensitivity of these speakers all seem to be a offering plenty of volume- heck the KG 3.2 are plenty loud right now! I am after more clear mid range/low mid and presence (not harshness) in the upper register. Before I beg to take any of these puppies home to hear I wanted to get some informed opinions and thanks so much for any advice!
  12. ended up getting a slightly used Outlaw 950 to replace the Marantz. So far I like the sound- very neutral. My only quibble is with the Vid switching- got some noise in the composite connection for the cable box- working on that.
  13. 2 things- i saw them opening night in Charlotte. 1) LOTS of fun- and it wasn't THAT loud. I saw them in 85 and I was in pain- liken it to the bottom of a 12 foot swimming pool. 2) See above as well as: Metallica - 1990- OUCH!, YEARS of playing drums in loud rock bands (snare crack is murder on 6Kz!), YEARS in the studio, YEARS doing live sound (feedback alone has altered my ears). Take the plugs as a precaution but enjoy the show! Eddie is still a monster-
  14. I've got a fried amp on my old SW-V. I've replaced the sub with an RW 10 D. My question: I've got a great cabinet & speaker sitting here with no amp and an older simple 5.1 capable system running only stereo in the den. should I invest in an outboard mono amp? Look for a plate amp that will "fit" my SW-V? I hate to just ditch a great cab & speaker. Thanks as always folks!
  15. I'll 2nd Leo Kottke's "6- and 12- String Guitar." and add: Django Reinhardt, Peche à la Mouche: The Great Blue Star Sessions, Not the best recording quality but his playing transcends the technology. The Doc Watson recording "Down South" (sugar hill) because i was 2nd engineer (seriously!) recorded on an Ampex 8 track w/Dolby and mastered on a (digital) sony F1 processor/Betamax in 1984! To my knowledge, the very first (if crude) digital master in the South? Country? Great mics and classic recording technique. Doc always said it sounded more like his guitar than any other recording. Bright, but his guitar WAS bright, and the room was wood & stone. Alison Krause & Union Station "Every Time You Say Goodbye" is just awesome. Jeffrey Foucault "Ghost Repeater" is a very intimate mostly acoustic record i always thought the acoustic guitar on JC melloncamp's recordings was really well done- and this is judging from the radio over the years as i do not have anything by him - but the acoustic guitar always jumps out at me when i hear his stuff.
  16. Thanks so much for all the great (and friendly) advice & the cool vibe here. I was very tempted with the Hsu research. I ended up going with the RW10d. The owner let me take it home for a week. He essentially gave it to me at cost (($265)). We talked a lot over some Krispy Kremes one afternoon. The shop is dropping all retail sales & going into semi retirement as a repair shop & keeping some TV sales before the patriarch retires. A sad story and a impact of the big box stores. I am happy :-) Now... I'm looking at replacing the marantz av 600 ;-) My needs are really too greedy. I want, at the moment, a pre with great 2 channel audio performance, sub out, AND a good video switching/HT processor so I can add speakers (and a nice display) on to in the next year or two. Or I may just get a mid line Rotel pre. Or ... as always your suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks again.
  17. thanks a bunch! so... the cheapskate in me says "what do you recommend at $300? :-) I'm looking seriously at a Klipsch RW10D I can get locally for 265. Thanks again- this is a great forum!
  18. I'd like to stay less than 400 bucks. BTW- official Klipsch replacement of the amp/pwr supply is 285
  19. thanks CECAA850. That was my feeling as well... I have a small listening room so I don't need a lot. I'm looking at an RPW-10 (there is a dealer going out of retial biz nearby- $265) or I keep hearing good things about the SVU and Velodyne lower priced models (like the DLS 3500). BTW your or anyone's suggestions are welcome. Again- I am much more interested in musical accuracy and natural bass extension than butt rumbling movie effects.
  20. Help - I have an old (circa 1996) SWV 8" Sub. Love it. It was hit by lightening and all I get is a nice hummmmm now :-( Can I get a new amp/supply for this unit? Or Would it make any sense to get an external amp and bypass/remove the circuitry & power the speaker? Or Is it time to upgrade? For what it's worth I'm using a Marantz AV 600 with KG2's driven by a Macintosh MC 2125 and the primary use is music. Thanks in advance for any advice!
