  1. Hey fini, Although the seller is new to Canuck Audio Mart, he seems to be on the up and up, he even offered have prospective buyers come by in person to look and negotiate. I am not sure how the P-300 rates sonically, but it does have some historical significance as it is the very first production model from Accuphase. It would be neat to open up the box after close to 35 years... I think the production run was 1973-1977.
  2. Just saw this classified on CAM: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/108509-new_in_box_vintage_accuphase_pioneer_nakamichi_etc/ I wouldn't mind having the ACCUPHASE POWER AMP P-300. Any idea what price this stuff might fetch?
  3. Congrats pythagore, Too bad for you they are not the lacquer finish, as everybody knows that lacquer ones sound a way better. Because I am a nice guy and would like you to have the best sound, I would be willing to take your new inferior oilers off your hands and give you my sonically superior lacquer Khorns. [6] Way to go [Y]
  4. Hi pythagore, I saw those ones, they do look nice. This seller seems to be selling a lot of gear in the last week or so, a buddy at work inquired about a Copland 505 amp that Paul was selling last week. I have a pair of '75 K-B-WL Klipschorns that I bought here from a fellow forum member and I paid $2000 usd, delivered from Detroit to my place in the GTA. I would think the $2500 cnd price is not out of the ballpark, his listing price at $2800 is starting to get a little on the high side. Paul's look to be in a bit better condition than mine are and they are an oiled finish [], which I would have paid a little more to get if I could have. I had Corns prier to the Khorns and I would agree that the sound is not necessarily better, different, for sure. Wish I had kept my Cornwalls, along with the Klipschorns. I think you will enjoy them, I know I am.
  5. tommyboy, You are right, it is amazing what a huge difference this has made. I am excited all, over again with these speakers! I was able to get the drywall up, mudded, and sanded. Hopefully I will get the wall primed tonight after work.
  6. Doctor, With the little bit of listening that I have done so far, things are sounding pretty good with the couch up against the rear wall. I am sure the sound will change again (hopefully better again), once I have the new wall dry-walled and finished. Sitting in this position, the sound stage seems at least twice as wide as what it was on the 15 foot wall. In the old set-up, the rear channel effects were very good with the Heresys being 3 or 4 feet behind the main couch. The rear channels for HT are definitely going to suffer, but for the 10 percent of the time that we watch movies will be overshadowed by the huge improvement that I am now getting in stereo music. Not sure if I will get everything finished this weekend but I will at least have the drywall hung, that will let me hear how things will be sounding.
  7. This is very sad news. oldbuckster was one of the very 1st members to welcome me to the forum and as a matter of fact is the one who got me officially into this "Madness". When I was considering the Cornwall as a speaker that I would like to try, Rob pointed me toward Tuned4life and highly recommended that I buy Doug's Corns. Rob was right on the mark and subsequently, I was lucky enough to get help from OB many more time over the last year and a half. Thank you Rob, RIP.
  8. The sweet spot... it will be much sweeter once the job is done and the room is put back together:
  9. Well... I got side tracked yesterday watching 3 blow out games and didn't get much done other than clean up a little and take a few pictures to show my "lack" of progress. Still to do, hang the drywall, mud, sand, paint, stain trim, install trim. I will what to relocate my dedicated AC lines to the long wall for the electronics... not looking forward to working with that 10/2 Romex again.
  10. Hey MechMan, If it is from Scarberia, you should probably give that one to me and try and find another one that has not played so much heavy metal... [] PM sent
  11. Congrats Rick, Where you able to find the 2505 locally or did you have to have it shipped? I am in the process of moving my room around right now, once the dust settles down with that, I was thinking about adding another type of amplifier to coexist with the DRD 45s that I am really liking. I would love a pair of used VRDs but they don't surface that often, maybe something like your MC-2505 might be an interesting higher powered option... you seem to be loving it.
  12. Hey Guys, Thanks very much for passing on your experiences. Yesterday, I got up to discover about 5-6 inches of snow and since we are a little slow this week at work I decided to take a "snow day". First thing up was cutting an old butcher block into a couple of 12.5" x 16" amp stands for the new to me, DRD 45s. Next was drag my right Khorn to the diagonal corner to make it the left speaker on the long wall. I slid it into the false corner and moved the electronics to the centre of the long wall and fired it all up. WOW, what a difference! You guys are absolutely right about there being much better detail and the sound on the long front wall is HUGE. I am not sure if I fiddled a bit with the left and right gain on the JM Peach but the sound as well as being bigger and more open, seems to be louder at a same spot on the volume control. Everything is just bigger and better, so much so, that off to Home Depot I went and got some lumber to build the wall to separate the front and back of the basement room. I got the wall framed and erected and then moved the rest of the furnishing around a bit to get an idea of how things will look and sound... a little stiff this morning. I may have to shorten the wall to 8 feet from 9 feet to allow for a better opening into the front part of the room. I have not moved the old rear projection TV yet, but Bill, read my mind about mounting a nice flat screen on the wall above the La Scala, right side up... Maybe when I move the TV I will accidentally, on purpose, tip it over and break it. Honey, I don't know how that could have happened [*-)] but maybe we should got to Best Buy and have a look around. I think you guys are also correct about the sweet spot may be better if I move the couch off the back wall a bit, I will have to play with that location after I get the room back together. I will maybe snap a couple of pics when I get home tonight to show what stage I am at. Don, I wish I had access to another Welborne DRD 45 to try the La Scala as a centre for the 2 channel music. 1st impressions are that I am getting a pretty good centre stage, but it is something that I would like to look into.
  13. Here is what I was thinking for the new layout:
  14. Hey Guys, I have been rethinking the layout of my basement listening room and would like some thoughts before I commit to the rearranging. My current room is really 1 long room that I use the back 15' x 20' area that is raised up one step from the front part, which is about 4 ' narrower. I have been relatively happy with the sound I am getting with the current layout but while I was playing around with my new amps I was doing some listening standing in front of the sofa coffee table and was thinking the Khorns sounded better with that ratio of listening distance to speaker width. I was probably only 10' back from the Khorns compared to approx. 15' in the normal sitting position on the sofa. With the new layout the speaker would be in corners 20' wide and the main listening seats would be approx. 12.5-13 feet back. Before I go all out and build a 10 or 11 foot wall to separate the front part of the room (and form a good corner for the left Khorn) I will probably move the one speaker over there and try it in one of the false corners that came with the speakers when I bought them from Claude. Anyways, does this ratio look better, or will I now be too close for the speaker width? My main focus here is for stereo music listening, but what do you guys think about the proposed positioning of my La Scala center and Heresy rears? Here is the current layout:
  15. Did I just see forum member, Mowntbkr, just sell a nice looking MC 2105: http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstran&1232389120&/Mcintosh-MC-2105- Looks like a nice machine and a pretty nice asking price?
  16. Hey Islander, I am not sure what might be the closest to you, Mt Vernon, Bellingham... but find the closest American UPS Store to you. They offer a very similar service that US Address does and if it makes sense to drive and pick up your packages there, try it. I did use the UPS Store in Niagara Falls, NY up until this year with just as good success (I was using a buddies work mail box there). After reading about US Address over at CAM, I gave them a try, they happen to be 10 or so minutes closer to the border than the UPS Store. This saved me the better part of a 1/2 hour on my round trip, other than that I would have stuck with the UPS Store.
  17. Rick, The exchange rate right now might be a killer, but shipping is not. When having thing shipped from The States, I have all my packages sent to US Addresses INC which is a company that will take delivery of shipped goods and hold them for you to pick up (up to 7 days with no extra holding charge). They are 2 minutes across the Lewiston Bridge, 75 minute drive from my work at Dixie and Eglington, they charge $5.00 per package. Here is their web site: http://www.usaddressinc.com/ As far as I'm concerned, this is the only way to go. Cheaper to ship to Niagara, NY than Mississauga, less hassle for your American seller, it is faster, no brokerage fee, and all you pay is your 13% tax on what ever the amount you declare as you come back into Canada. On some lower valued declarations, I have just been waived through without having to pay anything. DO NOT get ripped of by FedEx, UPS , etc with their outrageous cross border shipping rates!
  18. Now that I have convinced you guys that those VDRs are crap... Anybody consider selling theirs at a good blow out price. [6]
  19. Well, at 5Grrr vs. 2Grrr, the Mac would have to be a lot better to justify the jump in cost. And you already know how the JM works with Craig's amps. Speaking of the VDRs, probably the weak spots in all (nu2toobs, fenderbender, and mowntnbkr) your systems. How could a basically homemade amp compete with real amps like Mcintosh and the likes? [^o)]
  20. Lothar... I LOATHE you [] Outstanding pick-up! [H] speakers.
  21. Hey fenderbender, I can mention a few things that I hope may help. Mark also recommended to me the Pass, First Watts... He said if you have to go SS, First Watt would 1 of the best options. About 4 weeks ago I sold my Jolida 300B integrated and bought a Tim Rawson "First Watt" F3 clone and a JM Peach II. It is not a bad combo, but after the 300B I found myself missing the tube sound. The F3 does a lot of things much better than the Jolida... faster, more dynamic, more detailed, more powerful, and more importantly to me, much more quite, DEAD quite. The part that was missing... the fullness and ease to listen to. I am sure to some ears the F3 would be an easy choice to go with, my cousin was over just before I shipped out he Jolida and we played both set ups and he much preferred the F3, saying it had a much better bass response. He is a die-hard SS guy. Yesterday I just bought a pair of Welborne DRD 45s which will be here this coming Tuesday. This will be an interesting switch. If you would be considering a brand new "real" First Watt, I would suggest getting a hold of Mark at Reno HiFi and ask him about his limited time Demo offer... no restocking charge if this amp doesn't fit well into your system. I would recommend trying either the F3 or F5... all you would have to lose is round trip shipping if it didn't work out. Footnote: Over the last week or so that I have been researching and ultimately buying a new SET amp, I have been playing the F3 /Peach and the sound seems to becoming more fun to listen to. Either the F3 clone is burning in a little more, or my ears are getting more climate-ized to the new sound. Again, it will be interesting when I drop the 45s into the system. As for Bryston, I am a big fan. Before I got into Klipsch a couple of years ago, I had a high powered Bryston system. Musical Fidelity CDP> Modwright SWL 9.0 Pre> Bryston 14B amp> PMC OB1 speakers. This was an outstanding sounding system, but only after I added the Modwirght, put $300 worth of NOS tubes into it, and put $$$ worth of Cardas Golden Ref cables into the system. Up until then I was battling an over aggressive upper end with a fair bit of sibilance. I have got to think with horns, it would be a worse result... just a guess. The F3 is very detailed in the upper end, but in no way harsh or bright. Never owned any Classe but it is suppose to lean away from how I just described the Bryston and to a warmer SS sound. Well, there's my 2 and a half cents worth.
  22. Hey Sunny, Here is what I did: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/107256.aspx If and when my clunker of a rear projection Hitachi ever dies, my plan is to just turn my La Scala right side up and sit the new flatscreen tv on top of the Scala... Done.
