  1. Anything? I just had arrangements for a set of klf30, klf20 and c7. The member went to grab them from his storage unit and found them submerged in water... So again, still looking for a klf set. Help!

Submerged??  Dang...  See if he'll sell the drivers by themselves.  I'd be interested in that as those cabinets are easy to build.

  2. KLF30 having less bass than CF3? Sounds like something is not right.

My thoughts exactly...  Even my wife said, "what happened?"

That's what I paid for my 30's , best 500 bucks I ever spent.... AVGUYTX Mine have tons of Bass.. perhaps your not powering them with enough go juice. I'm running a 90 watt amp.

I'm using a Carver M-1.0t MkII Opt 002 (heavily upgraded) which is about 450wpc.  I don't think there's a shortage of power.  The CF-3's and the other speakers I own have ton o' bass with this amp and even the smaller M-200t (120wpc).

I gave $300 for a pair out of Austin awhile back and finally got them here about Christmas. Straying to get them to sound right in my living room and "like" them. Bass is a little lacking compared to my CF-3's which is odd. Gonna try bi-amping and see how that works out.

Something doesn't sound right. I would ohm the woofers to see what they are.

Did that already.  I want to say all 4 were 5.8-ohm each and I know all were in phase.  Believe me, I can hear when somethings out of phase.  25 years in A/V and I could pick out when speakers were wired wrong on dealers' displays/showrooms when I was a rep.  But my Norman Lab Model 9's, JBL L100t's, Infinity RSIIIa's and even a 2 pair stacked set of old Dynaco A25's have more bass.  Rather odd.  After my carpul tunnel surgery heals up, I'll dig into them more.  I may try to bi-amp them this weekend and see what happens.

  4. I sure do wish I still had the immaculate '78 Khorns I'd picked up in Denton for $500 back in 2008. They even came with the original gallon can of Watco Walnut Danish Oil he'd bought for them for under a buck the same year. I think I posted about them years ago here. Can't remember. But even if I had them now, I still wouldn't have 2 corners to put them in...same problem I had with my living room in Texas sigh.

    Congrats on your find!

  5. It was seriously no big deal when I cut the cord on our Dish Network bill where I live now.  I took the old satellite dish off the pole, installed the new UHF/VHF antenna, ran my single RG6 from the antenna through the attic to the amplifier, then ran 3 coax to the TV's, tuned it in, and done.  I loved that phone call to Dish cancelling their service and love throwing away the offers they send in the mail.  $125/mo x 12 = $1,500 a year saved.  Was already paying for internet plus Netflix so no extra expense.  All I did was switch from DSL to cable internet to triple my speed for about $15 more a month.

  6. Also realize that at 48 years old and a long list of rock concerts in my past it may be my ears that are actually the limiting factor.

I can relate to that being 48 myself. The late 70's and 80's attributed to my tinnitus and slight hearing loss. My take on all of this, which I agree with for the most part, is like my analogy of designing/selling/installing home and car audio video for 20 years and being a manufacturers rep for 9 years. What I was taught by my mentors, and a known fact, is "trash in, trash out". $10,000 of gear behind an AM radio is going to sound like a loud *** AM radio. Now, yours source gear is quite nice so I'm not implying that whatsoever. I think you're on the right track looking at room acoustics being an issue and is typically THE most overlooked.

  7. You'll be amazed at how easy you'll pick up stations with even a basic low cost outside antenna.  I think I spent $30 on the one I used in Krum/Denton and I had all of the channels with 80% or higher on strength.  Currently, I go from the antenna to a powered/amplified 3-way splitter as I have the signal to the living room LCD, master bedroom plasma, and one of the kids bedrooms LCD and all get the same channels.  So if you're hooking to more than one, don't forget to add that.

  8. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr P back in 1981 when I was 14 and a budding young guitar player and music lover. I had an uncle who was a master craftsman/carpenter/cabinet maker who drove me to the Hope plant where we got a tour and met Mr P. He and my uncle talked a lot about woodworking and we got the plans for the La Scala's from him. Over the next few months, we built a pair of the cabinets and with money saved from hard mowing and 2 paper routes, I bought all of the drivers and had the crossover networks built by a guy who did sound systems for churches in the town I grew up in, and assembled them. They were awesome! The sad part is, I lost track of them somewhere in the 80's and have no clue where they got off to.

Thanks again for all you did and for showing me what the enjoyment of music could be like. Happy Birthday!

  9. I lived in Krum (outside of Denton) for 6 years and had an antenna in my attic fired towards cedar hill and picked them all up perfectly. Can't remember the antenna I used but I'm in the same situation now being 50 miles from Little Rock and with a Clearstream antenna mounted to the old Dish Network satellite pole, I pick them all up perfectly too. Where are you located?

  10. I use a Logitech K400r which does all I need it to do on my repurposed HP M8100n desktop with a dual core CPU, 8gb  RAM, two 2TB HD's in RAID 1, etc, etc.  I run JRiver for main room with iPhone/iPad control and then Plex to 3 other Apple TV's and a Roku 3 in the house.  1100+ CD's ripped as FLAC files plus maybe 100 DVD's are in with plenty more space and expandable as needed.

  11.

I wonder if the perception of more bass response has to do with the more forward nature of the KLF 30

I don't doubt that the Epics are just a flat out better speaker.

I could never listen to the 30's flat (or any Klipsch for that matter). Rather than boosting the bass I have to make several cuts throughout the midrange. In fact, everything is cut to a certain extent but definitely never boosted.

The 30's are underwhelming until you do something to them. There's a lot to do.....but needs to be done to get them to the next level....and even then they may or may not be as good as the Epics.

This is where I'm thinking about switching from my (completely rebuilt) Carver C-1 preamp to a Emotiva Fusion 8100 receiver that has 11 bands of EQ built in for the main channels.  I know it's the room more than anything that's not working for the KLF-30's and it will have to be compensated with EQ-ing.  I don't think my wife would go for a bunch of room treatments and I'm not really worried about going into all of that, either.  And I know how they work and what to do as I did that in my last "career" in Home A/V and being a rep for Sunfire, Elan, NAD, PSB, etc.  I'll try the bi-amping on the 30's to see how that works with the Carver M-1.0t on the low end and one of the smaller amps on top end.  Although, it's kind of a waste of that M-1.0t as it's been rebuilt to sound better and have more power.  That's where the other part of me wants to just leave it on the CF-3's and call it good.  I'm still going to add in a powered sub or two and augment the low end some more.  I do like-a da bass.

  12. Well, I'm rather Carver biased as will anyone be to the things they own. But that M-1.0t MkII is a beast of an amp and great sounding. Russ Kall is the one who rebuilt my amp and its outstanding. There are lots of people in Carver forum who would help out in a second for anyone with Carver gear, too. The Proton I've always had a huge amour of respect for in an amp and heard it run Magnepans, Infinity Kappa 7's and 9's surprisingly well, too. That Yamaha is a good amp but I've not personally had as much dealings with them. I'd be careful with that seller though as they have a 0 feedback rating and he gives NO description of his own about the amp; just a copy/paste from a website or another auction. I'd steer clear of that one unless it could be picked up locally.

  13. I wonder if the perception of more bass response has to do with the more forward nature of the KLF 30 vs Epic series.  There may be more midrange/treble overriding the bass response since the CF series has been noted as more laid back.  Also this will be further exhibited by the WTW layout of the CF.  Being off center of the horn will make for a dip because of timing problems and cancellation in the crossover region.  Lastly port location does make a difference.

Glad you are happy with the CF-3s though.

Yeah, there is definitely a "perception" of more bass and I agree in that it's the nature of the KLF (and other) series that have a more predominant mid/high nature.  But, it would be nice it were a little more balanced between the two.  Even my wife, who really doesn't care much about it, could tell the difference and likes the CF's better.  I like the mids and highs of the KLF-30,s though, so I'm going to have to work on that a bit and see if a happy medium can be found.  I may bi-amp the KLF-30's with the Carver M-1.0t on the low end and either the M-200t (120wpc) on the horns or the Stromburg Carlson tube amp (12wpc) on them and see what happens.

The low end is more solid on the CF's without any boost in comparison to when the KLF's have boost on the bass.  If it gets down to placement, distance from wall, settings, etc., the CF-3's will be the winner here.  But, I'm not giving up on the KLF's just yet.

  14. And for poops and grins, I pulled all of the drivers and metered the woofers and each one reads 5.8-ohm so they all match.  And, yes, their polarities were right....red wire to red dot, etc.  I'm assuming the ports are correct at right at 3" depth per port.  But it's definitely a big difference in comparing the CF-3's to the KLF-30's.

Oh well...back to your regularly scheduled programming.

  15. I swapped the CF-3's back in place of the KLF-30's and I literally had to turn the bass back down to the flat setting; the CF-3's basically stock to stock have much better bass in this living room.  I've only replaced caps and resistors plus extended the ports on the CF-3's and nothing has been done to the KLF-30's.  I'll order new caps soon for the KLF-30's, I guess, but I'm going to open up the 30's today and meter the subs and see if they're all similar in resistance.  But for now, the CF-3's aren't going to be easily replaced.
