  1. 269 is a great price for a PS3, but from my experience and IMO the SD DVD upconvervison to 1080p on the PS3 was in now way a comparison to the Pioneer 51 or the Sony S550 in my setup. From reviews and comments the Oppo with the ABT upconversion chip is even better, so if SD DVD upconversion is a major priority the Oppo may still be a good idea. As far as blu ray goes all blu ray player image quality is about equal with proper calibration.
  2. Oppo is known for having great customer service, for example, I had a question about The EAP and priority list, I recieved a reply withing 10 minutes. Oppo has responded this way to everyone (not 10 min but within hours). Oppo has also released 3 firmware upgrades in the last 2 months, even addressing issues with individual discs. From my understanding they're service is amoung the best. Even though sony is at the fore front (being the manufacturer of blu ray) does not mean that they have the best players. If this were the case then everyone would only own a sony. IMO sony looks at Blu Ray and Blu Ray players as nothing more than a source of revenue (all companies do I know that). Sony's primary goal is not performance oriented or they would sport thing like HQV upconversion ( in the Samsung models from last year) or the Wolfson DACs in the Pioneer, each company has tried to tailor to one crowd or the other (ie video or audio), the sony is smack dab in the middle with no one really boasting it's performance in any arena. Sony know's for them it's an easy sell to go with sony because all the sales personel at BB (Bogus Buy) tell them "well the sony is the best they invented blu ray you know" so to the average consumer this sounds great because who would know how to do it better than the inventors, the actuallity is that all sony did was invent the Medium for Blu Ray, that is using a higher frequency laser to pack more material on to a single disc. The manufacturers who take the time to implement devices to properly function and decode the material that's on the Blu Ray disc is what's more important. So companies that have higher price points but focus on performance ( ie by using better quality parts) you are going to (in most cases) get what you pay for. The reason I believe that the PS3 gets so much attention is because of it's far reaching crowd, both gamers and the video crowd. So at any given time when comparing the PS3 to any other player the PS3 will almost always be twice as popular, the demand for the PS3 is high and it is by no means a slouch in any area, the PS3 is probably very suitable for most people. The analog outs is a neccessity for me at this time, and after living with the PS3 for a year the fan noise was attroucious.
  3. I've had a PS3, a Pioneer 51 and the sony s550, the s550 it a very nice unit, respectable load times, options for multi channel analog outs (ie distance, trim, x'over) and DTS MA decoding all of which the Pioneer did not have. The Pioneer definitley had more video tweaks, both had good SD upconversion with the Pio looking better IMO. The s550 beats the pio hands down in load times. The biggest/ most noticeable difference between the oppo and the sony is obviously the DVD-Audio and SACD playback. On top of those 2 features (for 100 bucks is a steal) the oppo offers top notch DAC for those of us using the analog section for our older processors. Gold plated terminals and the ability to add a RS232 port (for use with creston or AMX module). If you have no need or desire for DVD-Audio , SACD playback and plan to bitstream the advanced codecs the 100 bucks may not be worth the investment. However, if top of the line SD upconversion is a priority the Oppo may also be worth the extra money. From all that I've read the oppo seems to be at the top of the game in all aspects of its feature set with the exception of some DVD-audio quirks. The multi channel Analog DACs are used in denon's all new super uber AVR are the same that the BDP-83 uses and it's stereo out's are compared to the Burr Brown PCM 1796 DACs used in last years Onkyo Models (TX SR 805, 905, 875 and so forth) so these are probably a step up from what sony is providing as I've been unable to find what sony is using. My 2 cents.
  4. If all you're looking at is that both have optical and HDMI connectivity then the PS3 is probably best for you. On the other hand if top-notch SD upconversion, Multi Channel Analog Output, SACD and DVD-Audio playback are on your list I think the Oppo is a no brainer. juat my 2 cents. at 499.00 the Oppo truly is a steal of a deal.
  5. How do you have it connected to your setup Berserker multi channel analog or HDMI? Have you checked out the analog section? If so do you like the sound? I'm anxious and curious as the AVS thread has gone insane.
  6. I was lucky enough to have signed up early enough on the Oppo interest list and just placed my order. when I recieve it I'll let everyone know who it sounds with the klipsch stuff as I will be using primarily the analog section of the BDP-83 with my Aragon Stage One.
  7. shoot....... I posted and got a time out and now post is all gone. anyways I calibrate at 85 dB as it give flexibility for those TV channels that come in quieter. For 2 ch It's all bumped up another 15dB for an even 100dB which reaches peaks in the 110dB arena.Only when the wife is gone and the neighbors are sleeping......do i listen this loud
  8. I calibrate all speakers to 85dB for HT which we listen to at Ref levels. I think setting it higher than 75 is beneficial for us because it's also our primary room, some DTV station don't come in as loud so it leaves flexibility. For 2 ch listening I bump the mains and sub up to 100dB and listen between 95dB - 102dB with peaks into the 110 arena. I only listen to it on the high end when the wife is gone.....who would have guessed.
  9. I will check tomorrow but one album that comes to mind is the sgt peppers album. Lots of hard panning and if i recall track one has paul playing almost solely out of the left speaker. I could be wrong but for sure give that album a try
  10. Here's a wild thought, I know the Mc's sound real good but as a show of product confidenc, support and reliability why not use something from the older Aragon line. It could be a potential re-invigoration of the Klipsch - Aragon merger. May spur some talk amongst those looking at the High-End Palladiums. If they sounded good together in the demo room how cool would that be..... Probably not but it would be nice to see Aragon make a come back in the future.
  11. it is connected via optical, the buzz would stay constant even through HDMI, component video. Eliminating the ground plug fixed the problem
  12. Thanks for the input guys, I figured the gauge would be the most importantjust didn't know if there was something speacial i needed to know. The SVS Ultra IMO is a better sub then most. It's a very smooth sub the has serious output down low. I say smooth as it doesn't have the punchy sound the klipsch subs have, THE ultra is great for HT and music but if you're use to that punchy bass in music you may feel the SVS doesn't perform as you want it to. Once I got it dialed in and got it out of the corner it's been phenomenal for both. I like the smooth bass it gives to blues rock and classic rock.
  13. Got rid of the buzz by using the cheater plug. That eliminated the rest of my hum.buzz problem. Now my question is since I've bypassed the safety mechanism should I ground the cheater plug to the grounding lug on the APC unit? I think the amp is far enough down the surge protection line that it will be fine, the amp is pluged into a Mondial RPC 120 switched outlet the is plugged into the APC H15 power conditioner and it's plugged into the wall. I don't have a Multimeter. Should I still have the DirecTV guys come out and look at the coaxial lines if they are the ones that introduce the buzz or is it something on my side that needs looked at?
  14. I've exhausted my thoughts and efforts in eliminating the buzz/hum I'm getting. I had DirecTV installed about 2 months ago and have been getting a hum through the speakers when the Pre amp and amp are one. When they are off the buzz does not come through the TV speakers, only the HT speakers. I've unplugged all components individually to narrow it down. What I've come up with is the the DirecTV coax lines are cause the interence. The hum which is excessively loud (70 dB's) happens even when the power is removed from the DirecTV box and only disappears when the coax lines are removed from the DirecTV box. I've managed to get the hum down to a minimum by running it through the surge protector. any thoughts and Ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've got 1 APC H10 and 1 APC H15, the amp, pre amp and sub are plugged into the H15 and the rest is plugged into the H10 (TV, XBOX 360, CD player etc.). The H15 and H10 are plugged into the same wall outlet. I don't think it's a ground loop, I've looked all over the house for other potential grounds and still only find the Main Ground. It could be some Major RFI getting into the lines, if so how do I shield the cable from it? I've got a Tech comming out sunday to see if there's bad connections or a bad grounding block. Hopefully they'll send someone knoweledgable . I'd still however appreciate any input from you ladies and gentleman in resolving the issue.
  15. I've got a SVS Pb13 Ultra and I need a longer power cord than the one supplied, is there anything I should know before replacing it with something longer?
  16. not sure what shipping would cost but there's a Sunfire True MK II for 375. Zip code is 68147, may be worth it if shippings isn't too much
  17. The performacne issue could be the difference in display resolution indy, I see that you having the PS3 upscale to 720p vs 1080p. This could be a the perfomrance difference I felt the PS3 was lacking. It may at 720p be stellar, never tried it at 720p.
  18. Yes, I did have a PS3 and due to changes in my system I went with a standalone BD player. The PS3 was very audible from 12ft away during normal dialogue at reference levels. The SD upconversion I thought was really good until I saw the S550 and the Pioneer 51FD. The sound difference was a large change because I switched from digital (HDMI via PS3 to Onkyo 805) to analog (7.1 via Pioneer 51FD to Aragon Stage One). The speed was very nice in comparison to the Pioneer, the s550 is much speedier than the Pio. The SD upconversion on both the standalones were much better than the PS3. As well as much much queiter. I'm not a gamer so the acutal processing power the PS3 has is not that important, it helps with load speeds but the 3-5 second wait is not horrible. The upgrade option is nice via wifi but again firmware updates are easy enough to download and burn. My experience has not been bad with the PS3, I think it's definitely the biggest bang for your buck. I enjoyed having the PS3, as the setup changed so did the BD player. the video card is pointless in the PS3 for all of us who are using HDMI to their TV now it's the DACs in the TV. Same goes for the audio. As far as hype goes and being sold by what the manufacturer Print says is not really me, I'm sure I had it setup right I mean it's 1 cable right.....j/k. I always try to keep me ears and eyes open. I never said the PS3 was crap, I think the hype has gotten alot of people hooked on the PS3 because of it's functionality , you hear the same thing all the time " Get a PS3 for a blu ray player, you get a blu ray player and a gaming system" It's a great component, but I think that the standalone may give you better performance in their speacialized arenas (ie audio and video). The PS3 has alot on it's plate to be great at. I've been through a few BD players and with the exception of a few features I think they have all outperformed the PS3 on the audio and video side and all in the 399.99 price bracket. I'm awaiting for the release of the oppo, i hope it's soon.
  19. I've read and read that the PS3 is the best Blu Ray player more than once, I on many levels have to disagree. The PS3 is loud and noisy, it does a poor job at upscaling Standard DVDs and is also shotty on the audio side. The benefits of the PS3 is speed and connectivity. The speed is nice, the connectivity thing is moot because BD Live is still in its infancy so profile 2.0 IMO is a waste of time. in the 399.99 price bracket the PS3 gives the most bang for your buck but lacks in actual performance. The performance gap is closing ever so fast.
  20. I noticed a difference, I'm also waiting for the Oppo to be officially released.....
  21. I wantted to post about this movie when I first saw it, it has a great sound track, and if you like Martial Arts movies, this is THE MARTIAL ARTS movie. It starts off a little slow but is completely non-stop Jet Li, Jackie Chan type fighting the entire movie. Definitely a must if you like Martial arts, I was kind of disappointed at the beginning of the movie because it's subtitled but once the story got moving there was very little dialogue so no worry trying to keep up. Good watch ....
  22. I agree with sjcruiser, the sound characteristics of the brand will stayrelatively close. As far as power, processing and all the other bells and whistles the 805 will stomp the 606. I had the 805 for about a year before I traded it in, it's a great reciever and at the price they can be had for now, it would be ridculous to not get the 805 over the 606.
  23. I've never had Klipsch in-ears before, I've had Shure E3's for years and I absolutley love the way they sound. The fact that you get the different seals, including the FOAM plugs (which are a must IMO) are a greatsounding product. Shure also has great customer service I damaged a pair and they sent me a new pair promptly. As jay said, seal is important with in-ear to really maintain the dynamics.
  24. I think there is a RP-3 in there too somewhere.........
  25. I think most people adjust the speakers to small for HT use so there are not so many standing waves in your room as well as taking the load of the reciever. If all your speakers are set to larger, during dynamic scenes you may not get the impact you deserve because you have a limited power supply. I think your problem is most so as Todd has said, you probably having standing waves in the room that are canceling out at other seating posistions. I use to be a very selfish listener, ONE chair in the sweet spot, I've moved everything around in order to maintain the best oomph at all seating posistion, it's not MY ideal setup but sound better over a larger space.
