  1. The expense wasn't too bad, I paid about $700 for the total package including amplifier. It goes down into the mid teens typically, even lower depending on room gain. Made it because it is crazy efficient, massive amount of head room, and probably one of the best bang for your buck subwoofers you can build.
  2. Here is the BEAST in my living room, should be able to have it up and running tonight!
  3. Thanks for the input wuzzer!! Can't wait to get this sub pounding!
  4. Horn subs are crazy efficient, and this being a very popular one to build I have gotten a lot of guidance on how much power is needed. I am using this Driver http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?vReviewRateForm=1&vReviewSource=E&orefer=reviewEmail&vReviewRand=690620222477&Partnumber=295-190 and this amplifier http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-811&source=googleps This amplifier has some features I really liked, though I really wanted the O-audio 500 watt amplifier which is unfortunately on backorder through the middle of January. So I decided to go with the Dayton which has the same features, a little more money, and has been bench tested at being able to put out a clean 500 watts without even breaking a sweat. This horn and woofer combo never really needs more than 100-200 watts of power, so I will have a nice amount of headroom.
  5. Well I have had the big help of a master woodworker and will be finishing up this beautiful beast tonight! Pictured is Joe the great friend that carried my non-woodoworker-skilled-butt through this project. This is a 30" wide version of the Tuba HT.
  6. yeah, I wasn't thinking of replacing my system, but thought it would be an awesome system to use in another room or maybe piece out and just keep the speakers.
  7. http://kansascity.craigslist.org/ele/1510577608.html Is this a smokin deal?
  8. I would definitely think it would hamper the sub's performance, but I have been wrong once before so.....[H]
  9. I had my heart set on this amplifier for my Tuba HT subwoofer I am building http://www.oaudio.com/500W_SUBAMP.html I was dead set on this amplifier, but I tried to order it just now and got an email back stating that they don't expect to have any available until mid January!! I simply can not wait that long, the subwoofer will be done in a weak or so, and I have company coming over for christmas that I gotta have this subwoofer working for. So is there anything that has similar features as the Oaudio amp, and at a similar price?
  10. DANG!! that is a nice system I bet it really tickles the ears! Did you modify the center so that the mid and tweet would be aimed correctly?
  11. Thanks for the link, these are the kinds of pictures I am looking for.
  12. The issues with some of the plate amplifiers are that they have a built in subsonic filter that you have to bypass if you want to go below the set point. The Oaudio aplifier was tested on AVSforums and it is was deemed one of the best buys as far as dollar for watt with more features than almost any other plate amplifier within the same price range.
  13. So I am building a subwoofer and will be using the Oaudio 500 watt plate amplifier. http://www.oaudio.com/500W_SUBAMP.html I will not be mounting it to the subwoofer box, but want to place it in its own cabinet and sit it on my audio rack. Does anyone have pictures of the cabinet that they made for their plate amplifier? My initial thought was to make a black wood cabinet with some passive cooling vents low on the sides near the front of the cabinet for air intake then have other vents on the top back of the cabinet for the passive warm air venting. Maybe a nice looking brushed stainless steel or black handle on top for a bit of an industrial style appeal. Any help and creative ideas are much appreciated.
  14. It is perfectly fine, your receiver will be lucky to actually put out 40 watts of true wattage even though it is rated at 110 watts per channel, so you will be just fine. Go ahead and get th speakers if you want them.
  15. GO66 I noticed that your surround speakers are aimed towards your fireplace, what made you decide to aim them so far away from the listener? Just curious to see what your reasoning is.
  16. I'm starting to build one of these http://billfitzmaurice.net/THT.html Seemed like a design that is a little more trouble since it is not simply a box with a port but instead a folded horn. I have done a ton of reading and no one using them ever goes back to a simple ported design. The efficiency is stellar.
  17. A little non spoiler info about the movie first. It is filmed like blair witch, though it doesn't have near the jostling of the camera that Blair witch had, so no dizzy moments for those that are sensitive to it. It is filmed like a documentary. So don't go into this movie with notions that it competes on the same level as other typical scarey movies. The movie does a great job making you believe that the people shown are just normal people. There are a few points that you will have to suspend a little disbelief as far as comparing the main characters to yourself and how you would react, but definitely no where near that of a typical horror flick that has chase victims running upstairs instead of through the nearest door or window. A BIG HEADS UP: This movie uses a lot of silence, as many of you audiophiles know, the use of silence in movie recordings can be very important. I would avoid whatching this one in a movie theater that is packed, especially with a bunch of highschool teens that can't keep from squeeling long after anything scarey has happened. It is a movie that is easily ruined by people that are talking, shuffling candy wrappers, or with people trodding up and down the theater stairs. The documentary style story, and filming technniques are done well in a believeable manner. The movie sounded great to me, though this is subjective since I only saw it in one theater (AMC) I believe it could honestly sound amazing on a home theater that makes use of a solid subwoofer. My recommendations since I rate the film at 4 stars out of 5, and given the sensitive use of silence and subtle sounds, I would recommend that you stay away from packed movie theaters, and enjoy this one once it come out on DVD/BR instead of running out to the movie theater.
  18. He's trying to couple the sub to the floor by using spikes, not isolate it from the floor which is what the mat you posted would try to achieve.
  19. Definitely doing the Trick R Treat movie, I hadn't even heard of it and you are right it gets rave reviews everywhere! Does anyone know if best buy or walmart is going to sell the DVD's on opening day (the sixth) for super cheap? I know when I worked for CC back in the day that they would sell new release DVD's super cheap for the first day or so.
  20. I am having people over for a scarey movie night right before halloween, what are your recommendations for scarey movies that SOUND AWESOME!
  21. They don't ask you to ship the whole subwoofer to fix the amplifier issue, they only ask you to ship the amplifier to them.
