  1. That's really great news. I was waiting to purchase until I ran a separate 20 amp circuit for amplification. Me thinks that could be the resolution! We shall see. Thanks for that tid-bit!
  2. And there's the rub. The headroom we look for can introduce audio issues with very sesitive loudspeakers. I, too, would appreciate a gain control on the Emo amps. However, once the preferred source material is underway, the impact of the floor noise is all but gone for me. That is unless the source has very quiet passages. I can hear quite a bit that no one else can hear, too. I'm just more tolerent with the floor noise and chalk it up to the trade off between high efficiency and high power.. Actually, I'm rather unsophisticated lately when it comes to sonic quality. When the budget allows, I upgrade. When the kids are not around (2% of the time) I squeeze in some favorite tracks. Each upgrade has introduced plenty of smiles and plenty of "what if I had purchased... instead." I will be purchasing a UPA-7 in the near future. I feel it will be part of my kit for 10+ years. There are a lot of Klipsch owners who have driven them with Emo amps. I just don't see a lot of aingst regarding hiss. I could be wrong but, I'm willing to try. And the resale value on Emo gear - if there is an issue - is outstanding. Darn near 100%.
  3. Well, I went to partstore.com where I got me KSW-12 replacement and they don't have any Klipsch sub amps. Give a holler to Klipsch directly.via phone or email at Technicalsupport@klipsch.com. If the amp is available, they will give you a price toot-sweet!
  4. You won't be disappointed with the XPA-5. Have you checked out the UMC-1 also offered by Emotiva? I have had mine since April. Wonderful! It's made for those who want full control over all the settings. If you would rather plug it in and just have it work, the UMC-1 is not for you. BTW: I've just upgraded to the latest firmware release and this version is very close to final. I will be updating to the 'Hot Rod" firmware this evening and all the reviews on the Emo forums are possitive. The reported glitches are mostly gone. I'm very happy with this unit and at $699 + $100 in EmoBucks on top of that, there isn't anything out there that has the capabilities at twice the price. Just my 2 cents.
  5. I understand what you are experiencing. Been there! I bought a KSW-12 used and it was a brick. I found a replacement amp, bought it, and things are fine. It was much cheaper than replacing the entire unit. ($85 vs $350) I would go for the replacement amp. The whole replacement process took 10 minutes. Good luck and regards!
  6. Finally got the chance to dial in the UMC-1 and found that the 12" driver in my Heresy II center is shot. (C R A P) I've had the HII for about a year and never had an opportunity to really drive it. Would a drirect replacement K-24-K be the best or would a K-28-E add a bit extra? Or something else? Regards.....
  7. I've used: 78s, 33s, 45s, 8-tracks, cassettes, real-to-real, quad, CDs, MP3s, DVD, BluRays. I guess the only thing I missed was wax cylinders and wire recorders. My first musical memory is my big sis playing Buddy Holly on a 78 spinning on a pink and white Sterling record player. I consider myself fortunate being born in the 50s. I've witnessed so many wondrous advancements in technology and will be gone before the best you hear is MP3 squeaking out of .10" smart phone speakers. (I have a teenage daughter.) About 10 years ago I was feeling old. I was single, no kids. All the old gang were still living day to day waiting for 5 o'clock so they could get stoned. Left that behind some 30 years ago. Then I met my wife. 15 years my junior. 2 kids under her arm and needing something other than a 30 year old man-child. Now there are 4 kids 14, 12, 6, and 5. I can't afford to feel old! The little guys are the fountain of youth. I have become the "answer man" and it is title that I take very seriously. I'm not a preachy person and have always spouted the philosophy - Thank God we are all different or we would all die of boredom. But, if there was 1 piece of advice I would give to anyone feeling a bit old, it would be, talk to the children. Remember how often epiphanies happened when you were young? Share your knowledge with the children and watch for the light bulb to come on over their heads. It's simply marvelous. Marvelous. Reading this thread made me smile a lot. Anyone remember shoving a matchbook under the 8-track to get rid of the warble?
  8. I agree with both/all of you. The cool part is that being a boutique comapny opens up a lot of possibilities that bigger corps. can't offer. This business model is the way the future is heading. The big guys suffer from corporate culture paralysis. I know first hand about that topic. Their model is the PEFECT way to do everything. Just ask them. Emo is the first to offer comparable gear at <= 1/2 the other guys pricing structure. Sure there are bugs. The big guys have a (relatively) long time frame and lots of bucks to work out all the kinks before release. Sometimes they fail, too. I would rather deal with a small companyn that listens than a big one who just enters your complaint into data base, tracks it against worldwide sales figures and market share analytics, and makes a change only when the sales fall off. BTW: I just received the billet aluminum UMC-1 remote today free of charge just for buying a UMC-1. They did not have to do that! But they did. I guess I'm trying to say that I will gravitate to these smaller companies rather than the old corporate giants when I get the chance. Don't get me wrong. I am not an anti-corporate mind numbed robot. Value drives my decisions and coming in a close second is customer service. And as you have pointed out, Emo has wonderful customer service not because they have to but, because they want to. Next in line is a UPA-7 and that should hold me over for about 10 years.
  9. Rivernuggets - Glad to hear that the wiring change and the ground isolator solved most of the hum issue. I knew the new HDMI cable wouldn't help but at least now you have a spare. I said earlier that the UMC-1 should be silent because mine is. MAybe the Monster HTS-2600 has something to do with it. I can have the UMC-1 up to insane levels, pause the source material, and there is no noise whatsoever. No his, hum, buzz, or any other pops.Honestly, it's THAT quiet. I have yet to try the EMO-Q. That's coming and I have not been exposed to Audessy [sP]. I like to adjust manually. I am really intrigued by the EMO-Q and want to see i I was close or not. What I can say is that if I use the THX standard settings (80Hz crossover points, etc.) it sounds terrible. If EMO-Q uses these standards as a base, I'll be disappointed. Emo has said that theissues found in the EMO-Q are a result of the supplied microphone and they will replace it if we see strange settings after running it. Time will tell. I chose the UMC-1 because: 1) Price vs. Features - The total control of EQ was a big selling point for the price. To get the functionality I wanted, it would have cost me 2-3 times what I paid. 2) The Company - Tell me what other company will let you talk the the president or his vices? 3) Resale Value - Even older Emo gear is getting top dollar. 4) Honesty - Even when Emo makes mistakes, they rectify the situation and tell you that they made a mistake and why. 5) The top dogs post replies to the forum users. - Actually they explain and help routinely. Agin, what other company will do that? 6) They act on user ideas. - A lot of what is discussed in the forums or at their annual Emo-Fest is taken to heart and acted on. 7) The 40% discount on Upgrades - That in itself is truley amazing. 8) Cutting Edge Thinking - Emo is pushing the technology to the limits with each equipment release. The products in the pipe are not just the "new and improved" variety. Each moves the needle. 9) It looks cool! [] 10) If I have a probelm...... - Emo treats my issues as if they are my pals not just trying to get me to stop calling. 11) I wish it were my company. - I'll bet that 90% of the time these guys are having a blast. What a perfect job! Audio/Video inside info and you get to make the decisions. 12) Warantee/Perks/etc. - Just compare to other manufacturers. Emo is kind of like a warm blanket on a cold night. (Ya, I know that's pushing it. Can you tell I like my UMC-1?)
  10. Yup, that's 60Hz alright. One thing that might be causing this is that your power outlet(s) might be wired incorrectly. There is a great little gadget for about 5 bucks that tests the wiring at the outlet. It will show if hot and ground are reversed, among other things. Actually, if you can hear any hum when the TV is off, that's not correct. The UMC should be silent. Hmmm..... (No pun intended.)
  11. Separate amp is by far the better option. I've been where you are and went back and forth for months. (Big receiver or separates.) Even with low end amplification, the pre/pro separate made a world of difference. I had separates 20 years ago and never was able to get the same sound quality out of an all-in-one unit. Decided to go back to what I liked and it was a great decision. My 40 yr. old mains sprang to life again! Your 82s will be/sound/perform much better with separates. .02
  12. 10 x 10 is really hard to set up no matter what speakers you have. Towers will out-do bookshelf in general presence but, the right bookshelves can be so nice when a sub is included. Your "C" option would be really sweet. These are matched tonally and you won't be dissappointed. It depends on what sound pressure you are looking for and what your future plans are. If you move to a 14x18 room, this option could be a bit thin if ya want to rock the house. But hey, I have a larger room and I'm running 4 RB-25s for surrounds with no complaints. (Yet)
  13. I don't think I saw in any of the preceding posts what the approximate frequency of the hum is. 60Hz? I have part of my gear plugged into a Monster power conditioner. (Blu-Ray, UMC, Piece of crap AVR, DirecTv DVR) The rest is in raw 2 wire outlets on the same circuit. (Panny 50 plasma, 2 KSW-12s, the WII, the WII charger) All are on the same circuit. That's right, no ground and no hum. I guess I'm just a lucky SOB. The point that needs to be made is that a cheap HDMI cable cannot introduce hum. Everything going over HDMI is digital. Ones and zeros. If all the ones and zeros get through the wire, there is nothing that can add any constant stream of bits to the data from adjacent power cords to make a hum. However, any interference on an anaolog interconnect can cause a hum. Bad RCA cables can pull a hum out of thin air! If the hum is 60Hz, all the advise offered so far is right on. If after all the troubleshooting you determine that the UMC-1 is the root cause, Emo can and will help you out. Is there is anyone in your vicinity who alos has a UMC? Swaping their's for yours would be the best test. I've read on the Emo forum that some UMCs have been identified as the problem with this process. Emo has replaced units when direct comparisons have proved that the original unit has issues.
  14. I agree. Get one if you can. Emo has put all the effort into audio and it shows. Video is still frustrating as with any equipment. The sound kills. (Compared to what I had.)
  15. Got it 1 month ago. Love it. The LaScalas sound almost new. I haven't tweaked the settings much and have not tried EmoQ. I still believe it's the best $699 I've ever spent on HT gear. I will update FW in the next couple of weeks. Time permitting, I'll post impressions and anomolies.
  16. There really isn't a 'recommended' sub from what I can tell. It's up to your ears. I've read where people shy away from the Klipsch subs. I've also heard that anything but a Klipsch isn't worth a pinch of ****. My first sun was a KSW-12. Too directional so I added a second. Once I got the xover dialed in, I can't tell where the subs leave off and the Lascalas come in. That's just what I have - NOT - what I would would want. (15s would be great or maybe a few from the RW line) This I can say, a good sub will pair up with any set of mains. What do you like? The low rumble or the in your face punch. Personaly, I feel that anything that overpowers the main source is simply youthful arrogance. It needs to blend. You don't want your neighbor's kid's car in your living room, right? Thump, buzz, thump, buzzzzzzzzzzzz, thump. That being said, the badder the sub, the more oomph on those sudden explosions or those 50 ton robots hitting the ground. If I would have had the funds, I probably would have went for something a bit more. But, heck, when the kids giggle because they feel the bottom end on their butts and the wife says "Whoa!" when the meteor hits the ground, I think I'm pretty much OK for now. That may change when I go to a pre/pro and separate amp. (Soon!) I have heard HT setups with 10" subs and yes, they are better than no sub at all but, when you then hear 12s or 15s, it's a no brainer. Just don'r skimp. There are a lot of members here that have great stories to tell and recommendation. If they warn you about what NOT to invest in, take their advice.
  17. Dang! I put my preorder in on 1/12/10 and no email yet! Maybe I should call? I have a few things to sell that will make up the difference (F3's, Academy, SC-3) but, even if they don't sell, I'll still opt for the UMC.
  18. And that's the perfect example of what to expect! (You lucky dog! You wouldn't happen to have another LaScala sitting around?) My Heresy center pulls it weight but I can't imagine what another timbre matched LaScala would do!
  19. But, but, but.... with the HDMI don't you get everything you need? Maybe I'm oversimplifying. HDMI will take the place of analog imputs. It's all there. Right?
  20. I just looked at the back of that Denon. You should be able to run the HDMI out from the UMC-1 to 1 of the 3 HDMI ins on the Denon. Then run the HDMI out on the Denon to the TV and use the amps. The HDMI will carry all the audio signals you need. You would set the Denon to the proper input and leave it there in perpetuity. Also, from what I can ascertain from the Emo forums, I should get my UNC-1 April or May.Then start saving for a UPA-7. Plenty of power for the big, ugly, cubes of sonic bliss.
  21. Can we assume that the picture on the left used to be straight? [] Wonderful setup. No matter what gear you add for home theater, your Dad will always be a part of your enjoyment. Regards....
  22. Same here. I'll run it through the cheapo amps for now. One piece a a time. []
  23. My take is that they had everything naileddown and then 1, one simple change corrupted the the entire firmware version. This has to be due to lack of change control that is always a risk in a smaller company. They have fixed that and added a couple of enhancements. Thumbs up! I think that their top guys drive the finer details, or lack there of. However, they do listen. My gut tells me that when I do get the unit, the bugs will be gone and there will be a few finer details included. Of course, there is always the firmware updates. The HDMI thing HAS to be a nightmare. I'm glad I don't have be the one having to downgrade functionality just to meet copyright laws. I'm currently running component into my 720P Panny plasma. I have the plug in HDMI board in a box waiting for the rest of the supporting hadware (UMC). I've seen many a complaint toward HDMI. It is the way we are going. Here's another wish that I'm going to ask for when my account is verified by the administrator..... 11 band EQ for speaker pairs instead of each speaker alone. If they can tie 2,4,6 speakers together when setting the EQ, It would make setup SO easy. There is one other thing that nobody seems to be addressing. What about more than 1 HDMI out? I know a lot of people who have a small monitor or a second room HDTV ready for connection. 1 HDMI out is sort of short sighted. Oh well. there are HDMI splitters, right? All that said, I can't find another pre/pro out there that will do what this one can. Add "party" mode and life will be good.
  24. I think I'll be waiting a while since Emo has quite a backlog of pre-orders. Been lurling around the Emo forums.... Quite a few users are requesting "party" mode. I use Multi-Stereo "party" mode VERY often. A lot of people drop by for a good sonic blast and having all speakers pumping out the L/R signal is great for get togethers. So far Emo (Big Dan) hasn't posted any yea/nea for this mode. I can only hope it will be there when I get the call! For those of you who heven't yet and are interested, there is a good video demo on the UMC-1 over at emotiva.com. This unit will be the capability king!
