  1. You can only buy the older, cheaper models at walmart.com. Also, also the higher Denon models, 2802 and up, are all made in Japan. Also, the original question was about the sound quality, not about it's ability to pass a HD signal. But you can't really argue about sound since it's all personal taste. ------------------ Paul This message has been edited by oogins on 12-09-2001 at 07:29 PM
  2. I just auditioned the KSWs today, and they aren't musical at all but they are cheap. $299 for the 10 and $399 for the 12. Not bad for the price. I also heard the RSW-10. Very nice but way out of my price range. They were $1349. I think I'll take another look at the SVS 25-31.
  3. I've heard it and I found it to be quite boomy. It's worse than the KSW subs. This message has been edited by oogins on 12-09-2001 at 06:07 PM
  4. As most of you know I have been doing a lot of looking around for a good sub to go with my quintets. I want something that is small, musical and can play higher frequencies. All the recommendations I got were fairly expensive and they were also difficult to get. So I'm looking at the KSW's again. They are both cheap and readily available in my area. And because they are so cheap, I'll most likely get two. So Im wondering what people think about the 10 and 12 inch subs. Are they musical? Do either of them have any punch, do they just go boom? Also, what do you suggest I should get, 2 10s, 2 12s, or a 10 and a 12?
  5. That's really up to him. There's nothing wrong with either configuration. He should experiment to see what he likes best. Personally, I like the surrounds on the side. It gives a more ambient effect.
  6. The Bryston 3B ST hasn't gone up. You paid $1400 US, that's about $2250 CAN. BTW, I've decided the 3B ST is too expensive, so I'm looking at the 2B LP instead. I figure I dont need that much power for my room (11.5'x10.75'x7.75'). Plus, reviews are saying the 2B LP has the same sound quality as the 3B, and it's more suited for bookshelf speakers and smaller rooms. 7. WOW! Progressive Scan, DVD-A, and SACD in one machine. I knew that someone would eventually release a player like this. Maybe some of the bigger names like Denon and Marantz could release an all-in-one player. Is Apex a decent brand? They only seem to be available at big chain stores. This makes me think that they are mass-produced and not necessarily made for quality. This message has been edited by oogins on 12-01-2001 at 04:28 PM
  8. We still have a Sony Beta VCR from 1985. I found it in our storage room along with a box of tapes. So just for the hell of it, I hooked it up to our TV and I was amazed. Even after all these years, the picture was incredibly sharp. It looked better than most new VCR's I've seen today. I've talked to several people about this and they all said that Beta VCRs were superior to VHS. After hearing that, I'm starting to realize that this is true. After all, they had a great picture and the tapes were smaller. So I'm just wondering, if Beta VCR's were so technologically superior, why did they go under?
  9. I don't have the KSC-C1 or the SC-1. But I do believe you will not have the front stage timbre matched if you use either of them with the Quintets. The KSC-C1 and the SC-1 have different and larger tweeters and drivers. The larger drivers will not only make then play louder, but they will also sound bigger. Even if you tune them with a Rat Shack SPL meter, the center will have a larger sound than the Quintets and overpower them. With this combination it will seem like something is lacking from the Quintets. Your best bet would be to get a Quintet center. Keep checking eBay for one. If you're too impatient then you can probably go with the SC-.5. It's not a perfect match, but it won't overpower the Quintets as much as the KSC-C1 and SC-1. 10. I bet a lot of people will like it. But who in the right frame of mind would spend $28000 for that? I can see why Colin gave that rating. This message has been edited by oogins on 11-30-2001 at 09:53 PM
  11. Thanks for the tip Colin. I know that Bryston is Canadian, but it's also is the most expensive amp I'm looking at right now. Which makes me wonder, how much would a 3B ST sell for in the States? I've heard good things about tube amps, but they seem rather high-end to me. I'm currently not interested in them. Maybe when I get some better speakers I take another look at them.
  12. I've talked to a couple dealers that carry the Marantz Monoblocks, and they said the sound will be very bright if used with Klipsch speakers. Do you guys agree with this?
  13. Yeah, I'm also considering the price ratio for the speakers and the amp. It does seem a little overboard to buy an amp that's twice the cost of the speakers (i.e. Bryston). But then again, I'm buying a Denon 2802 for my Quintets, and the price ratio for the speakers to receiver there is about 1:3. When I audition the amps I guess I'll decide if the performance is worth the money.
  14. I'm not too familiar with the Promedias, but I do believe the v.2-400's do not have a headphone jack. The v.2-400's were the original 4.1 speakers. You can upgrade the preamp to a CP-1. This will give you a headphone jack. This message has been edited by oogins on 11-30-2001 at 12:25 AM
  15. Yeah, that's why I'm considering the A200. Because they are discontinued the dealer reduced the price significantly. Their original price was $1700, which is about $1100 US. But now that I think about, I'm not going to get it. The dealer won't let me audition it before I buy. However, I did find a dealer that carries the Marantz MA700 Monoblocks. And to top it off, they are a Klipsch dealer as well, so I can test the Monoblocks using the RB5's.
  16. Have you ever thought of the Quintets? They are nice little speakers. I have a 6.1 setup with them for my computer. However, these little speakers aren't the greatest for music, hence the pair of RB5's I'm buying later next month. Another system that might be worth a look is the JBL NSP1 system. If I were going for an economical non-Klipsch system, I would go with these.
  17. Okay, I've been looking around and I've come up with two more possibilities. 2x Marantz MA700 Monoblocks 200 watts - $1250 Mondial Acurus A200 2x200 watts - $950 Are these amps comparable to the three I listed above? The reason I ask is because I can't audition them. All the dealers I've talked to say they don't have them in stock, but they can order them. But they won't order them unless I'm committed to buying. So I would like to know if these are worth considering.
  18. I'm guessing you have the KSW-10. This is a powered sub, meaning it has its own amp built in. You just need to connect your sub to the sub preout on your receiver. If your receiver doesn't have a sub preout, then you will have to run speaker wire to the sub's binding posts. But either way, you don't need to worry about your receiver needing to power your sub, the sub's amp will do this. This message has been edited by oogins on 11-29-2001 at 02:11 AM
  19. The 4800 does not use the Silicon chip. Because of the problems Denon had with the 2800 (Silicon), they switched to the Genesis chip. Currently, the Denon 4800 uses highly tweaked Genesis chip, even better than the one in the RP91. Essentially, the 4800 and the RP91 are the same DVD player with some little differences. The both use the same chipset, and they both support DVD-A. The 4800 is a 5 disk changer while the RP91 is only a single disk player. The RP91 doesn't have bass management for DVD-A while the 4800 does. The 4800 has some scaling issues with letterbox TV's while the RP91 does not. 20. You shouldn't have two speakers playing the exact same thing like that. It might increase the volume, but the identical sound waves will interfere with each other and bring the overall sound quality down. But if you decide to do this, your receiver or amp must have the capability of switching from 8 ohms to 4 ohms. The two speakers would be in a parallel circuit, and bring the resistance down to 4 ohms. However, another solution will be to obtain a Quintet center speaker. While it might be difficult, it will be worth it, as all your speakers would then timbre match and the center will no longer be overpowering. 21. Try asking this question at Home Theater Forum . A lot of people there own this player and are quite happy with it. If I was going to buy a Progessive Scan DVD player now, I would get either the Panasonic RP91 or the Denon DVM-4800. After doing a little research it seems that both players are the same, except the Denon is a 5 disk changer. They both use the same chipset (Genesis) and support DVD-A.

    Kickbutt

That appears to be the Denon AVR-4800. If you think thats sweet you should check out the AVR-5800. http://www.denon.com/catalog/products.asp?l=1&c=2
  23. Not everything made by Sony is crap. They make excellent DVD players, CD players, VCRs and TVs. I recently bought a Sony MD player and it is quite nice.
  24. quote: Originally posted by Vatican3: So how exaclty should i hook up the receiver to the soundcard to get 5.1 eax capability??? The picture shows an example of 5.1 inputs. For 5.1 EAX you will need to connect your soundcard to these. Line Out connects to Main Rear Out connects to Surround Center(left)/Sub(right) out connects to the Center and Sub input The Denon 1802 and Onkyo DS595 have these inputs, but unfortunately the Marantz 4200 doesn't. However the Marantz 5200 does. In fact the 5200 has 6.1 inputs. However that might be a little much if you're using the Audigy but could be helpful when you upgrade to a 6.1 soundcard.
  25. I will be buying a pair of RB5's solely for music playback, and I would like an amp that's decent but isn't too expensive. By not too expensive I mean less than $2000 CAN ($1300 US). Some possibilities I've found are: Bryston 3B ST 2x120 watts - $2000 Rotel RB-1080 2x200 watts - $1500 ATI AT1502 2x150 watts - $1275 These are the prices that dealers gave me when I phoned them, so I will be able to bargain them down a little. Can you guys suggest anything else I should take a look at? Also, what are your opinions on the amps that Ive listed?
