  1. Oops, square pegged that round comment Sorry cjett, I know better. Your SVS experience gave me much of incentive to write that Ultra check. I was tired from a 14 hour drive through redwood forest backroads and reacted to the green scene without thinking. My BAD, I just react strongly to people who don't work toward fulfillment of worthwhile heart's desires. Obviously, with your equipment, you don't even begin to fit in that category. I am hoping that the CS-Ultra will arrive before my son (he of perfect pitch... must have gotten it from his mother) ends his surprise father's day Scrabble visit. Given the reputation of SVS subs (like the twins you have) and the twin 16-46's TV touted me out of, my expectation level may be disappointingly high in the "no boom... just a great feel" category. Once again, cjett, thanks for the inspiration... I'll let you know if it paid off post haste! ~ They just got to get that little green guy with the tongue working right for envy posts! 2. Wow, Mr. Blorry, with a terra cotta factory like that you could earn new digs in no time! Okay, back to the drawing board... The smallest units I have used with KLF 30's are SB-2's which were used for front effects. The new surrounds would work but you would have to move some "terra cotta" to make them affordable. 3. JPahl, the hope is my unit will be shipped next day before the end of this month. SVS is a fairly small operation and my favorite sub-human is up to his ears and then some. So, I told him if he needed a rest to hold off on building my fully paid unit. No, I am not patient... I just want a "Wednesday" build (to cite the old Detroit cliché) and that is a lot to ask from a guy who is working night and day weekends included! While my ears are primarily Klipsch centered, I have to admire the effort of Tom and the guys to be one with their ideals. It kind of reminds me of this guy in Hope with a horn in his head and a schoolteacher wife (who taught German) in his heart. HornEd
  4. Hear! Here! ColaBear. I like it when you put your mouth where your ears are! Mr. Blorry, I have enjoyed your candid posts.. so candidly I say, Legends go with Legends in a way unequaled by any other Klipsch combo IMHO... and I have tried a lot and will try a RC-7 to replace my KLF C-7 if the Good Guys get better. BUT, you can do a lot worse than Heresys... and you will be surprised how good KLF 30's are on the side of rooms as narrow as 14 ft. 5. Hold on to your breath mints, HONDADX, you will find the "inside stuff" on this board is way faster than any speeding production line in Hope. The new "Reference 7" lines are being cranked out to replace vaunted Legends now relegated to yesteryear. The neat thing about following this board is that its about as fair and honest a commercial board as you will find these days. And the Klipsch minions from Trey Cannon in the trenches of customer service to BobG atop Bon Mots Mountain, I have never seen the new Klipsch speaker insider excitement any higher. A few of our "great unwashed" (i.e. customers, like yours truly, who has not been bathed in the new Klipsch sound) have been fortunate to get their ears around the cherry demos at avant garde dealers... and all the "first ear" reports have been rave reviews. However, for those who live in the backwaters of less up-to-date places, like the San Francisco Bay Area, it is a "Wait & Hear" proposition. You'll find the posters here quite candid and helpful of one another... whether it says "Klipsch" on their paycheck or not. Of course, their are a few old reprobates whose bated breath is held in the Legendary inner sanctum of their old fashioned KLF 30's... or any of a hundred+ other Klipsch offerings over the last half century. This site has been recently upgraded... all that you seek is probably here... just be patient and mouse around a bit. Oh, and not to be discouraged if you like the new sound, I know first hand that there is a cash market for your KLF 30's... 6. Ah yes, kenratboy, yes indeed I know the "Biggest Little City in the World" as a target for my sporting Bay Area family for generations. I also know, first hand, that the folks in and around Reno are some of the friendliest I have ever met. Maybe that's why your Good Guys is full of good guys & gals? Your "redneck" comment tells me their mostly conservative, but I didn't think they were so conservative as to mention the length of their commutes in "minuets" (how well I know the dance of the spellchecker)... although I did enjoy "Riverdance" live the last time I was there. It is amazing how close the "Riverdance" DVD sounds to the Reno experience on my Klipsch based sound system. I plan to be roaming the Sierra's next week and if we can fit in a side trip and still make the airport on time, my son and I might just roll into a positive Klipsch encounter sooner than you think. I just made a deal for some vintage Cornwall II's from beautiful Jackson Hole, WY, and now my "Klipsch Dealer" faith has been restored by a town well known for the fair play of its dealers. Somehow greatness seems to spring from small-town America... and with all the Klipsch dealer doings, there is still Hope in Arkansas! This thread has been an "eye opener" for me. It is great to see people speaking out for the "good" and "bad" side of the Klipsch distribution system. It is refreshing to hear of a community where Klipsch buyers are not treated like salmon swimming upstream to spawn their purchasing power in exchange for a little sonic bliss before they cash in their chips. Well, this is one salmon who may be a little smoked but who is determined to stay one jump ahead of the cream cheese! HornEd This message has been edited by HornEd on 06-22-2001 at 07:28 AM
  7. I bought a pair of 47" tall equipment cabinets, put them in the corners and inverted a pair of KLF 10's on top. That put the horns at just the right level for a magnificent "front effects" background to the KLF 30 mains. I had been running Klipsch SB-2 monitors on six foot columns but needed more rack space... and mounting the speakers conventionally put the horns too high. An added bonus is the woofers sound better in the inverted position as well. Now I am wondering if I should create some kind of stand and invert the side surround & rear KLF 30's as well. It is a good thing that my elderly mother doesn't have the decor hang-up my previous significant other had. HornEd ------------------ Horn Legends LIVE!!! 8. Speedbump, I really feel snakebit on the shipping issue. I sent a cashier's check by Priority Mail from the SFO airport (often a day faster) on the first day the Ultras were available and it took a week to get to SVS! Here is the comment from SVS, "Great news! I received your cashier's check today for $2,765. It had been totally soaked and then dried. The envelope was stamped 'RECEIVED IN DAMAGED CONDITION'" A single Ultra PC is now being field tested and may also be something you might want to consider downstream. I think I am going to be able to tweak the Ultra down to about 17Hz with dB's to spare. I think the Ultra's are likely to be great for HT and greater for music. But, I also realize not everyone has a desire or a need to plumb the subhuman depths. HornEd
  9. JPahl, your extra ports let me know your my kind of person. I know the pain of unrequited tweak. Since I have never heard an SVS woof into my particular ears, I am somewhat apprehensive about sending $2,765 to a company that has such glowing reviews of its products. Your considered statements, JPahl, bring me comfort in this time of anxious waiting. Thanks. Although I have herd of subwoofers going unheard, I turned to SVS in search of excellence. I was attracted to the twin 16-46 for some first octave therapeutic use for nonagenarians. Through frank and in-depth communications with Tom Vodhanel (SVS) I am following his suggestion and awaiting delivery of one of the first Twin CS-Ultras with 1,000 watt Sampson and ART351 EQ. It would seem that he CS_Ultra answers some of the same concerns you (and I) have about the tweaking concerns about 16-46... but I suspect I can tweak the Ultra down to about 17 with all the broad spectrum advantages not yet available in a 16-46 format. It was only the promise of the Ultra that had me hold off on ordering dual 16-46's. In the meantime, I am gathering Cornwalls, etc. for some further Klipsch experimenting. Hopefully, Speedbump, I can give you some insight into an Ultra solution for your quandry in the next couple of weeks. From what I can tell, bass management in multiple discrete speaker formats is in its infancy... and I expect we all have a lot to discover... particularly the makers of speakers, pre-amps and power amps. I am thankful that we have the sound of Klipsch to steady the wall-of-sound above subwoofer range. So, I will stay tuned to this board... for I believe the best is yet to come. 10. Not every bump has a silver lining... glad yours was a winner, Speed. After FedEx did a similar number on my last pair of KLF 30's, I repaired the damage at my own expense rather than wait out the FedEx bureaucratic hassle that I thought might take months. I tip my horns to you for your perseverance and good fortune. I am arranging to have a pair of Cornwall's shipped to me and was having an attack of "FedEx abused speakers I have known." Your experience brings me renewed confidence that there is a viable alternative to just taking the abused Klipsch FedEx delivers. Oh, yes, and I had to pay a little more than your Cornwell example... but not much. Having said that, I believe your FedEx feat to be the far greater accomplishment! HornEd
  11. Craig, glad to hear you were happy enough to buy another "sub-dude" tube. Enjoyed the photo of your new sub and KLF 30... especially since noting that you are such a Klipsch enthusiast that you have employed a "wee green Klipsch defender" as sound protection. Cjet, I spent too many years being green with envy and urge you to let it be an incentive to putting the green in your wallet just long enough to ear's desire. You will be amazed at what you can do when you exercise all that you are! I realize that your comments are not so heavy as all that... but I did not get my present "resource set" as a present... I got it the hard way and bear the scars of someone willing to pay the price... and then some. On balance, it may not be worth it. I believe an honest full-range sound system can be used to relax or excite the human condition as needs arise. As such, it is an essential household tool for mental well being... and can pay its own way in increased productivity. Hmmm, I guess that means that I prefer not to buy a dog that won't hunt. Enjoying life is what you make of your own environment. Color it with Klipsch as much as you can. I'll be happy to share my MHOs on the Ultra... and probably on the new Klipsch subs as they appear. But for now, please pass the pop-corn I'm still doing Father's Day. HornEd This message has been edited by HornEd on 06-20-2001 at 04:22 PM
  12. Cutting little circles of Dynamat (A self-adhesive sound deadening mat found at auto audio stores) and sticking them under the feet of all components has harnessed a lot of negative vibes for me. Also, it is thinner than most sound absorbing materials, so it takes less room from my equipment stack. 13. PhilH, thanks for the timely and well received reply to which I am in accord. BobG's post did indeed touch a nerve... in that a fair amount of my business income came from decades of experience in evaluating customer relations environments for corporate clients across the country. Granted, that did not include Klipsch, but it did include a great many household names in a wide variety of product lines... including electronics. Although retired, I would not disclose potentially damaging information about any retailer without quite compelling proof... and certainly not on a whim or some imagined personal slight. I am quite careful about establishing the fact situation before I make a public comment... and IMHO, BobG's inferred that perhaps the speakers were not even there! This board is a cut above many others in many ways... and the more honest and candid it remains... the more likely it will retain and grow in service and influence to Klipsch and its consumers. While I may be guilty of a flip comment here and an ignorant blunder there, I would not knowingly compromise the image of Klipsch or any retailer without strong cause. The length of my posts is often caused by my concern not to be misinterpreted as to content or the intent that spurred it. I dropped in at the Good Guys store yesterday for a hundred meters of Cat 5 cable (which they no longer carry) and received an assurance that (as a response to my earlier concerns expressed to management) the advance demo RF-7's and RC-7 that they had received will now be set up in their better sound room... and another confirmation of the existence of internal disagreement over the early display of the new Klipsch products. For what ever it's worth, PhilH, when my early efforts to encourage was dismissed out of hand... with the comment that I had probably "shot my wad" buying so much equipment so that my opinion was not as important in their quest for new sales. Ah, yes, the dread "What have you done for me lately" syndrome. Clearly, the new manager doesn't know me very well. It was only then that I made this post... and informed the local store that I had... so there would be no mistake as to the author if the controversy continued to spiral. Good Guys (or any other retailer) exists because they are able to maintain sufficient customer confidence to be able to pay their creditors and give a return to their investors. That is not easy to do... witness pioneer retailers Woolworth or Montgomery Ward. The point to Good Guys is that Klipsch engineered products are sufficiently unique to attract a market segment that has more word-of-mouth potential to influence new customers in addition to sales generated by their own consumer upgrade path... and the ongoing product development by Klipsch to foster it. Oh, and PhilH, thanks for the comment regarding Father's Day... it looks like my son will be returning home with a new Klipsch attitude... and a fair sample of my Klipsch "warehouse" as BobG referred to it in another good natured post. Trying to earn a living as a salesman or manager in the competitive maelstrom of a high volume sales environment is no picnic. Usually, any time-eating "customer comforts" (e.g., in-depth comparisons, rig set up advice or "how ya doin'?") must be reduced to a minimum in the crunch of bottom line reality. That's not what we as consumers want to hear... but it is a fact in building effective distribution chains that affect the price/performance potential of any mass produced product line. Klipsch spends money maintaining this FORUM so that we consumers can benefit from making each other aware and, yes, doing some effective consumer handholding for each other (and, don't forget the "lurkers"). It is a bonus when a "K-minion" responds to a post and you fellows do it with style, rumor squelching accurate information and just enough attitude to keep it interesting. Fortunately, you are not perfect IMHO, and so, some of us retired folks have something worthwhile to do. Love that Klipsch sound! HornEd
  14. Sorry, BobG, but this is one time either you are mistaken or the sales and management staff at Daly City Good Guys is. Cherry RF-7's and an RC-7 are sitting in boxes in their store and I was told in no uncertain terms that they would stay there until someone bought them or some room could be found in the showroom. That's what upset me. While I am more voracious as a consumer than demanding a consumer, I thought that after the first $10k (and I am way beyond that this year) or so they would at least open the box and give me a demo. Frankly, cherry doesn't match the rest or I would have bought the RC-7 they had for display. The store has recently acquired a new head guy and the rest of the staff seems to be quivering a bit as they jockey for position. But, that is not my fault... actually, I came in just to check when the R_-7 might arrive and was told they were there but they did not have any immediate plans to display them as per the new manager's orders. I am a tall, 280 lb person with a full beard and long hair from my medieval festival performances... and a reputation for buying for myself and others that has every salesman smiling as I enter. As a veteran CEO, I have the ability to be very demanding... but now that I am retired, I am trying to quit. Yes, BobG, I intimately know the hassles of a retail sales floor and, therefore, would be among the first to give a store the benefit of the doubt. It is not only the convenience of a neighborhood Klipsch outlet that I lose in my dissatisfaction... it is the "bargaining power" that past purchases have given me on better deals that come available in the store. Due to my experience and (hopefully) gracious attitude with store personnel, the better salesman there tend to gather round with sales technique and Klipsch questions. Sadly, I am much better on the former than the latter... but still way ahead of these Good Guys. Frankly, the Klipsch based sound system that was built to stimulate my mother's cognition is not bad as it stands. And I will probably buy another as a gift to my son who took the time to come visit for a couple of weeks as a father's day present. As a retired person with comfortable transportation, a long drive to a satisfied end is far preferable to a short drop into sales stupidity. I realize, BobG, that it is in the Klipsch interest to build a positive relationship to its stores... but in that direction, to suggest that the Klipsch name and RF-7 nomenclature was not on the box boosts the stores credibility at the expense of one who has been, in the main, positively Klipsch oriented. It should be possible to boost the store without trashing the customer. Your "Horn-Edifying" posts, BobG, have been a primary reason for frequent perusal of this board. When you have found my posts wanting, I have appropriately posted mea culpas and/or explanatory follow-ups. Whatever your opinion of me, be it known that I have tried at every turn to boost this board, your products old and new, and the K-staffers and members that make it special. I wasn't looking for any special favors from Good Guys... or this board... just the "fair shake" good business practices imply. There is far more joy than gloom on this board... far more help than hurt... the staff gives us posters good natured jibes when we need it... and allows posters equally well intended opportunities to point out potential stumbling blocks to Klipsch success. I hope that backbone of candor and good will may grow as our favorite speaker company seems to be giving up expanding Hope to spend more time in the land of the "fast track." After my less than wonderful experience, I have done some research into how Good Guys sales personnel view Klipsch and the Klipsch promotional team effort. Like everything else, there is room for improvement. If you like, I will send some of the observations to you for they are not suitable for posting. I may be upset, but I do not lack respect for the challenge of you or your work BobG. HornEd not read? This message has been edited by HornEd on 06-19-2001 at 07:42 AM
  15. Greg, good to hear from you. Sure, some shift in tone & timbre occurs due to the acoustic characteristics of the room... but the changes reflected in a sound moving from side surrounds, to mains, to center deserve a bit more continuity than some configurations allow. I can easily detect a difference in my six KLF 30's as the pink noise is generated to each speaker... but it is more like an honest sound with a slightly different character. I had just about decided to buy a new RC-7 from my local authorized dealer... but the manager has not allowed their demos out of the box in their storeroom. So that encouraged me to slice up the damaged KLF 30 which I have since fully restored. I also have an extra KLF 10 that I could use as a center... and that may have some advantages given what has been previously posted on this board. That would allow me to keep the KLF 30's as three matched pairs (7.1: Fronts, Side Surround, & Rear Effects). I have installed matching, 47" tall, equipment cabinets in the left and right front corners of the room and mounted L&R KLF-10 front effects speakers on them in an inverted position. It makes the best front array "sound wall" I have yet tried. Greg, I appreciate the encouragement and will let you know what happens. 16. Ahh, MaxG, thought provoking as usual! Glad to see your nOrh reference... I thought of you when I reviewed their drum speaker designs in solid wood and marble. Cylindrical designs fascinate me as well. The concept of a room full of cylindrical column speakers holding objects d'art atop them is something that would make a Hurst Castle aficionado stop and take notice! In subwoofers, cylindrical designs appear to provide an even pressure on all interior surfaces... negating the need to build a heavier box. Standing waves, while no problem for subs, can be real performance killers inside full-range towers. Some higher end speakers use internal pipes but keep the outsides essentially rectangular. Rectangles seem to be easier to produce and more in tune with the buying patterns of consumers in the mass market. And that produces a corporate stability and growth potential that keeps stockholders happy. I am afraid, MaxG, that those of us who find swimming against the tide a reasonable exercise of our time and resources may not constitute a prudent market base. I think some of the secret of Klipsch success comes from finding the right blend of innovation, quality and market-segment attractiveness. I hope the new Reference 7 additions will be so successful that they bite the backsides of all the authorized Klipsch dealers that could not find room in the showroom. Could it be that these new speakers are so dynamic and so cherry... that retailers are afraid they will make their other brand offerings pale by comparison? I hope so. Meanwhile, I will keep looking for an IPO for a "Midas Touch" speaker manufacturing company with MaxG at the helm... after all, once you hear sold gold chambered nautilus speaker cabinets... No, just a minute, didn't I read something about Stradivarius beating fine grains of gold into the wood that would become the world's finest violins... how about gold laced MDF cylinders? The wilder it gets... the more I respect the acoustic engineers and the job they have done in Hope. HornEd
  17. Q-man... as I page through memories of "Sound Rooms I Have Built"... I remember one with a concrete slab floor and concrete blocks with the hollows filled with play sand. The large room had an esoteric shape to break up standing waves and accommodate the corner horns... plus a small stage. I don't remember the size... but I do remember it as being a favorite gathering place on the 36 acre estate. I built another structure once that may spur your thought processes. I used straw bales held together with rebar rods and sprayed them with concrete (as in pool building). I was building a replica of a 12th century English church... but the end result was so acoustically exciting that I filed the thought away for some future time. The method is an approved construction method in California and provides a far sturdier and cost-effective structure than you might surmise. I feel another structure coming on... so I especially appreciate your posts, pictures, drawings, etc. I have a particular interest in your experimentation with ceiling treatments and their effect on standing waves. Decades ago, PWK had some formulary approaches to room size (including ceiling height) but I believe that contemplated a two-ear:two-speaker music set-up. Life sure takes a dynamic turn when you build a roaring multi-speaker sonic jungle to explore and conquer! Build on fellow Klipschers... a Klipsch end justifies diminished means! More later... Here is a photo of my Klipsch motivated 93 year-old mother watching her favorite S.F. Giant, Rich Aurelia, on my HT system. Rich is from Brooklyn, N.Y., but makes his home as a dougdrake neighbor in Scottsdale, AZ. Aurilia is a shy, soft-spoken guy with a BIG heart who recently played in an 18 inning game and got up the next day to inspire the senior citizens of WalkAbout... a group of seniors (including mom) who walk 1.75 miles in a mall twice a week... plus warm up and cool down exercises. Aurilia signed mom's photo and chatted awhile... but mom forgot to mention Klipsch. Maybe you can do it for us in the off season between dougdrake2 posts. HornEd
  19. Hey, BobG, our Klipsch collections are an exercise in indulgence. Putting a bi-wire option on the rear speakers is in keeping with our indulgence potential... at what should be a very little extra cost to Klipsch and us. Who knows what whims we may want to impose on what the factory calls "rear speakers?" Not being a "bi-guy wirewise"... my needs are not abridged... only my freedom to indulge in them. And, that, my would be friend, is far more expensive. HornEd
  20. A few days ago, my software engineering son in Texas (we communicate almost daily by high speed computer) linked up to tell me how busy he was and ask if it would be okay to play one of our legendary Scrabble games on Father's Day? 23. Actually, Monty, some of my key purchases have been made by driving up to your area (Davis) after scoring a web contact. I have family ties to Auburn and (further up the North Fork of the American River)Foresthill. I also participate in the annual medieval festival now held in Vacaville. It looks like I have just acquired a pair of Cornwalls (thanks to Dougdrake's alert) but they will likely wind up as a part a music-oriented system. At least I come by the "HornEd" alias honestly! If I run across any more good KLF 30 deals in your area, I will let you know... I sure have enjoyed trading with other Klipsch enthusiasts... more fun than the local Good "Guise" and their Bose bozos. HornEd
  24. Gee, guys, it sure is nice to hear that my case is not an isolated one... and, better yet, that there are some really good Klipsch dealers worth patronizing. In fact, I am making a list of the good dealers you guys have suggested so I can pass them on to my friends, acquaintances and maybe even an ex-wife or two! I hope you understand that I am really not interested in having a salesman lick my boots because of my purchases... I just don't like a store that ignores (and refuses to build) a demand for Klipsch speakers in one of the most expensive to live areas in the whole U.S.A. All my personal purchases point to is that, hey look Mr. Manager, there are some Klipsch fans who also walk the walk. Hey, looking at the price on our gas pumps, even the oil companies know that there is much more business for the "Hope/Indy" speaker connection than Klipsch has collected. I hate to think that I was born and raised in a land of "Bose-ohs" as some high volume store managers would have me believe. Now that the long awaited R_7 series can finally make the scene of our neighborhood dealer... it is so sad to find the showerooms R_7 empty!
