  1. Craig, I thought (and I could be wrong here ) that when you you did the DC balance that we talked about that we were balanceing the two tubes that were in each channel and than you did the bias again and that would bias all the tubes correctly, but if this is indeed true your idea would be easlier and faster to do anyway and keep me from haveing to take the amp apart to do the DC balance everytime I wanted to check the Bias or change tubes and reset the bias. If you have any pictures of what it would look like (on the 299B) post them so I can see what you are talking about, I might want to send you my amp sometime for such a Mod. Randy
  2. Craig, Looking at the picture of the back of Deans Scott 299B on top is that the Bias Mod you were taking about in your E-mail to me last week. If it is how does it work and how does it make it easier to bias the amp. Thanks, Randy
  3. I have mine on two milk boxs each and the speakers laying on their side with the tweeters towards the center and the speakers cocked in to the center of the room where my recliner is ( sweet spot). For some reason this setup being pushed by a vintage tube amp sounds the best to me and is heaven to me.
  4. Radiohead, I bought a MacIntosh 225 two years ago for $700 on E-bay and it has been completly rebuilt and it isn't for sale, But if you looking for a Mcintosh 225 and is willing pay $2500 for it we need to talk. But getting back to what everyone is saying about using USPS money orders I think it is a great Idea if it makes someone think twice about ripping you off. Down hear in Texas we call it covering your ***.
  5. Boy, I'am sure glad you all told me about useing USPS money orders over the bank money order, I have made about 80 buys of E-bay and I don't sweat the small stuff but when you send a guy $700 for a Mcintosh tube amp you kind of worry ( I'am I going to be the first guy he rips off) even when he has 100% great feedback. I will use postal money orders for sure now, just some added insurance, I like it when I learn something new. Thanks all!
  6. If Scott was still in bussiness in the USA and still building this amp I bet it would go for three to six thousand dollors new. A new Mcintosh amp built today costs six to eleven thousand dollors and I bought a Mac 225 two years ago for seven hundred dollors and I think I got a pretty good deal. I still think that for poor people like most of us, that love great sounding music and don't have thousands and thousands to spend on it that vintage amps are the way to go. I imagine that vintage amps will keep going up in price as more people figure this all out. I bought a Scott 299B three years ago for a little over two hundred dollors and now that I got it upgraded and sounding nice I wouldn't let it go for a thousand. Randy Taylor
  7. I own a Scott 299B and it is one of the nicest amps made in the 60's. You are very lucky to find one at Goodwill at that price.
  8. Bill I have a pair of the Waves and they are good for the price they are kind of Mid-fi sounding (cheap Transformers)and you would be much better off getting a vintage amp like a Scott or Eico from the early 60's and have someone upgrade the caps, like Craig (NOS Valves) and when you were done you would have a high-end amp that sounds great that if you bought new today would cost $3000. to $6000. for a lot less than a thousand dollars. Scott amps for one like the 299B has a sound to die for and can be found on E-bay for two to three hundred dollars if you keep your eyes open.
  9. The Pilot 232 that I bought last year is one of the ones that came from the console, the only differents with the console ones and the stand alone ones is that the stand alone one is painted gold and has a tube cover, all the transformers and the circuit is the same on both types. I use the Bottlehead foreplay for the preamp and seems to be a great match. My Pilot 232 is not the prettiest to look, but the sound sure is pretty, with lots of "WOW" factor.
  10. This amp is rated at 18 wpc, which is plenty loud with the 96db/watt of the Klipsch heresey II.
  11. I was lucky enough to win my Pilot on Ebay last summer for $180. but would not take a thousand dollors for it now. It's a keeper!! Last year I think I ran into six of them up for sale at different times and this is the first time I have seen two on Ebay at the same time. Two people are going to get a great amp. This amp of mine is just great with any kind of music but I think it is at it's best with classical, it's like you are right in the studio.
  12. For everyone looking for a great sounding Tube amp to go with your Klipsch horn speakers you might look at the Two Pilot 232's on Ebay this week.I have a Pilot 232 that was rebuit with auricaps and Riken carbon film resistors and the sound that comes from my speakers is fantastic with this little EL84 based amp. Pilot was considered one of the best audio amps made in the late 50's and the early 60's.
  13. I have a Mac 225 (that was completly rebuit in 2001) that did the same thing. I also was using EH 7591 tubes, the tubes had about 1000 hours on them. I had a lot of dirt in the tube sockets, but I could not say for sure that this what was causing this red glowing plates (runaway tubes)one tube at a time, every few weeks or so. Since then I have gotten some GE NOS tubes and no trouble. I think that the Russian EH 7591's are not that great of a tube and are not holding up like they should. I like the sound of the EH 7591's but the tubes are fairly new to the market and don't seem to have a real long life. I have read on the tube section of the audioasylum.com of others having the same trouble with this tube. Hopefuly the people at EH will inprove this nice sounding tube.

  15. I have a AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000, Klipsch Heresy II,Mcintosh MC-225 and a foreplay pre-amp . They all sound great together. The Ah! njoe Tjoeb 4000 has a very clean open musical sound to itself and is a bargain for the under $600. price, sounds like a CDP costing a lot more. I love mine.
  16. iferI know how you feel about your amp and the way it sounds. I just had the same people at Vintage Amplifier Restoration do a upgrade on a old Mcintosh MC 225. They changed out all the capacitors, resistors and power supply filters and it sounds great. They do beautiful work.
  17. I recently purchased the ASL AV-8 "Wave" and also the Bottlehead full Deal Foreplay and I must say for a pre amp and two mono blocks just over $500 they seem to sound great with my Klipsch Heresy II speakers. I listen to them last night and they seem to have a lot more detail and tighter Bass then my Scott 299B amp that I was using for my main amp. This Combination seemed to have a lot of sound in my 14x20x8 living room, and seems to have a wider ( what I think people refer to a sound stage). They also them to be easy on the hears not harsh and grainy like some amps made made my speakers sound. I don't want to come off trying to sound like an expert because I'am not, I just wanted to pass on what I think sounds good for new equipment for people on a budget like myself and can't afford to spend $3000. or more on tube amps at this time for good sound.
  18. Thanks for the info Weiming I have seen the 2A3 Paraglows and what I read they have great sonics, but I was worried that they might be not strong enough with Heresy II 96db/watt for the rock I still listen to even at the age of 50 that is why I was looking at a 300B amp.
  19. Thanks for the info so far guys, but I live 140 miles from the closest High end audio shop. Unless you think Radio shack or Circuit city are High end Ha Ha!I did take your advice Ray and ordered the Wave AV-8 mono blocks today. $99. each it would be nice if they do sound good. I have a pre-amp on order from Bottlehead a $289 kit called the Foreplay that I have read sounds great Ill try my Waves when I get it built and let you all know how it sounds . Talking about the Bottlehead amps has anybody tried the 300B amp kit they have with Klipsch speakers, I would like to know how they sound $1600 is a lot to spend on a kit that I never heard to be disappointed with the end product.
  20. Last year I purchased a pair of Heresy 11's but soon found that the solid state receiver that I had was much to bright and harsh with the klipsch speakers I had so I purchased a H.H. Scott 299B off E-bay and it sounded great with the speakers, but being 40 years old I started to think about a new power amp (tube)to replace the old scott in the future. I have read on line somewhere about a company that has done a reissue of one of the old Marantz tube amps with lots of improvements to the amp. Dose anybody know any info on this reissued amp thank you!
