  3. most channels are broadcast in stereo, and many in stereo surround... these formats are decoded by your receiver and sent to the appropriate channels. it's not a gimmick... you can definitely tell which stations are broadcasting in surround vs the ones broadcasting in mono IF you have your speakers setup correctly to your receiver. the surround channels take full advantage of the rear speakers... in "sports" mode, especially, it sounds like you're right there at the game, with the crowd cheering all around you and the commentary coming from the center speaker. do you have cable or satellite? oh... by the way, to answer your question... yes, it's a 2-channel source AFAIK, but it is encoded with ProLogic data which the receiver then decodes... same way with VHS movies from the store... almost all of them are encoded with 2-channel information along with ProLogic data... the only true separation of channels (someone correct me if I'm wrong) is when you go to digital... DolbyDigital or DTS from DVD's or from HBO/Showtime or the like into a DolbyDigital satellite receiver or digital cable box... regardless, TV most definitely sounds better thru the HT system... even a cheap Panasonic shelf system... because your TV is not built to be an HT system - the most power I've seen built into a TV's amp is a whopping 5 (maybe 10) whole watts per channel! Into maybe 3.5" paper cone speakers.... not optimized for sound - optimized for picture... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! 4. HECK YEAH! To echo other sentiments, why have a nice stereo system and not use it? 70% of my viewing is regular TV... I get much use of my Yamaha's DSP's, especially regular Pro Logic and "Sports...." ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  5. any particular reason you want to listen to regular cd's through all 5 speakers? regular cd's are not intended for 5-channel sound... your DTS or DVD-audio on the other hand, is. Any time you play a regular CD through a receiver's soundfields, you will lose some of the original sound (you'll notice less bass, mostly). Play regular CD's with no soundfield. Just straight-up 2 channel. That's the way it was meant to be played. Especially with Sony receivers. Their built-in DSP's (Digital Sound Processors) suck, to put it plainly. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!

  7. simply insulating walls to make them more dense does NOT do much for sound deadening... sounds like she has plenty of money to do it right, with 'floating' walls, using the super sound clips and foam mats, 2 layers of drywall, etc check this link in particular: http://soundproofing.org/infopages/channel.htm I also just found a company that will send you a whole kit (all you need is drywall and screws) just from the dimensions of the room that you give them: http://www.asc-soundproof.com/home-ent.htm ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  8. check out www.soundproofing.org for all directions and supplies for sound deadening. The new "Supersoundclip" they sell seems pretty awesome, and they sell all of the foam mats, acoustical sealant, etc, etc. Here's a link straight to the Super Sound Clip: http://www.soundproofing.org/sales/supersoundclip/supersoundclip.htm ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  9. most definitely have DirecTV played through the HT speakers... haven't heard my crappy TV speakers in years! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  10. gnarly, have you tried getting a TV repairman to 'degauss' your tv? He may be able to fix it using a degaussing magnet to reverse the affects of the speaker magnets... by the way, you all, I am the world's biggest MORON! I totally forgot about uBid's bidding strategy where the price you type in is for ONE not BOTH speakers! (even though I've bought speakers from them before! total brain fart!) So, I'm in the process of cancelling the order... No way do I have the funds for $900 speakers right now... but there WILL come a day! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  11. OH MY! I AM STILL IN SHOCK and DISBELIEF... I just bid on KLF-20's on uBid for the HECK OF IT AND WON!! How to explain to the wife... she has NO IDEA!!!...... 13. are NOT magnetically shielded? How much do the bucking magnets cost, and how hard are they to put on... and do they work? My 15" dbx's are a good 3 to 4 feet from the TV, with a large, solid wood big-screen entertainment center in between them and the TV...and they still affect the picture some (of course they don't have any shielding or bucking magnets...) Just wondering, because there are some good deals going around, and I may be biting the bullet soon ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!

  16. Parasound is definitely what I'm looking at... not in the very near future, though... The 2205 is what I'm aiming for, paired up with their very highly-reviewed 2500u pre-amp. Looking to spend around 4,500... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  17. if you told the Denon that no sub exists, I believe it will send a full-range test tone to the mains, therefore, the 'kuggggghhh' instead of the higher-pitched hiss. i get the same thing with my setup. nothing to worry about. your system is doing what it's supposed to do. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  18. Toy Story 2 and Saving Private Ryan are good ones... also, see Legends of the Fall. There are some great war scenes where gun fire is going diagonally from behind you left to in front of you right and it really sounds like whatever it is (I think it's a shell) is going right over your head. Lethal Weapon 4 also shows off your stuff pretty darn good. Lots of guns, glass breaking, and rain, especially in the first 5 minutes... Braveheart has some good sound editing, too. Awesome music, of course, but the fight scenes are kick-butt as well. The plane crash scene in Cast Away is also great... lots of great ones! Enjoy! ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  19. you're asking for tons of features for that low of a price... the Parasound AVC 2500u that I'm leaning heavily towards comes close, but at around $2500, it still does not have ALL of the features you want, and it's $1000 more than you want to spend... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  20. a good third of that was probably in the projector alone..... runco 20K and up ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  21. I think the 'professional' recommendation is: 5-7 feet from floor to bottom of speaker, slightly behind listening position. As far as the "back wall" goes, if you notice on that "surround speaker config wars" page, the only sounds that are specifically recorded to come from the back wall are the THX EX ones (and DD 6.1?) which require a source recorded in that format. Regular 5.1 surround is meant to come from the side, as in a regular theater house. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  22. Kain, with speakers that are made for being on the side, it will not sound weird. It will sound great. You and your listeners will be enveloped with the sound. By "speakers that are made for being on the side," I mean DIPOLE. By having two opposed driver planes, with the opposed drivers working out of phase (as one driver goes out the other goes in), sound is radiated back towards the back wall, front towards the front wall, and off the ceiling, creating a diffuse, enveloping ambience. This is how theater houses are built (although their speakers are monopole - direct radiators, you'll notice they've got 6-10 of them on either side of the room), and the sound is very natural, like you're really THERE (wherever the movie is). I particularly like the design of my Polk RT f/x's. They are trapezoidal, with the drivers angled slightly up towards the ceiling to create even more of a radiating effect. They also have a switch to switch them between dipole or bipole, depending on where they're mounted and what sounds better... I found 2 very informative sites: The first one, Audiovideo101 - Definition of dipolar , is a straight-forward definition of this kind of speaker. The second, Surround Speaker Configuration Wars , is an excellent in-depth explanation of surround sound and how different speakers, whether dipole or monopole, handle it. Hope this helps. ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  23. Kain, I posed this same question to the board... I say, save some money and buy from Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, or Target... Wal-Mart is carrying Audio Research interconnects, and Target carries Gold RCA brand... You'll save enough $$ to buy a few DVD's, perhaps. Is "Monster Cable" really worth it... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V -5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
  24. I will be eventually replacing my non-DD RX-V990 with separates (pre-amp/amp) for hopefully less than $4000... anybody here have Parasound separates with their Klipsch speakers, and how do you like it? what about Bob Carver's Sunfire series? I'm leaning more toward the Parasound (more in the budget), and their HCA-2205A and AVC-2500u have some pretty awesome specs. Anyone with firsthand experience? ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 5-way w/15" woofers Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk RT f/x Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation connected to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound! 25. Most of this decision is going to be left to you and your own ears/wallet... what are you going to be playing on this system? movies only or music and movies...radio...?? but many of us on here have real-world experience with which we can advise: The Quintet micro-theater system is fine for SMALL rooms (12 x 12 and less) and for MOVIES ONLY... musically, they are very lacking. They just don't have the 'balls,' for lack of a better term, to play music with feeling like large speakers do... Personally, I'd stay away from any of the 3 systems you mentioned. There's just way better systems that you can piece together that will satisfy your longings than having to buy something tiny like those ones and be disappointed after a while... they're just... tiny... ------------------ Front: dbx Soundfield V - 15" woofer, 8" mid, ribbon tweet, 3.25" mid & dome tweet on top Center: KLF C7 Rear Surround: Polk f/x bipole/dipole Amp: Yamaha RX-V990 100x3; 25x2 DVD: Yamaha DVD S795 (built-in DD Processor) CD: Yamaha CDC 575 5-Disc VCR: Toshiba M752 6-head TV: Mitsubishi 40" Tube DirecTV Sony Playstation w/ s-vid & RCA to V990 for awesome gaming picture & sound!
