  1. Floyd Toole wrote a few papers on mixing subwoofers.  I have mixed everything from 8 to 18 inches subwoofers vented and ported.  I could get a flat FR down to 15=20 Hz with a combination of different size subs in a room of 700 Sq ft.

  2. Yes, you can mix different size subs.  How much wooferage do you need? Depends on room size, music vs movies, location upstairs or downstairs, on concrete and neighbors?  Integration is the key when mixing multiple subwoofers and a good AVR or FR correction software.

  3. The KLF 30 is/was an excellent speaker.  Something similar should shine with tube amp.  My Focal Aria's are 91.5 db. sensitivity but, even with my Oldchen amp, most of the time I am under 5 watts which is blasting.  Build a good XO for your speaker and no need for multiple amps.  After all, we are in an arena of distortion and not necessarily looking for a flat frequency response.

  5. Big Conglomerates that buy up Sonus Faber, Klipsch, Onkyo, Integra, etc. , offer what? A similar product with different names to give you choice.  Oh, where are the unique products going to come from without the corporate bottom line coming in 1st. Sonus Faber and McIntosh were premium brands, will they be dumbed down to increase sales.  Audiophile may become a generic term due to mass marketing.  This may be all hyperbole?  Invest in Sonos?

  6. I don't have an RC 64 ii but, I have an RC 64 I need to get rid of for next to nothing. I used it with my RF 7 II system.  Using system EQ, no difference in sound.  The RC 64 centers are excellent speakers.

Where are you located?  There may be forum members near you that can help.  A want to buy in the Garage Sale section may gain you some traffic.

  7. What speakers will you be pairing with the amp?  Any Heritage should shine with that amp.  It is twice the size of my r8. I can't say I have not looked at the 805 and 845.  Not sure if I can lift it, lol.  The r805 and r845 are considered to be a significant step up in the food chain but, at a price that is still a bargain.

  8. Hi Dave, I don't own the R800 I 845 amp but do own the R8.  The China amps get a lot of so called modifications.  Look at the video, the amp is well built, quality components and craftsmanship that will cost you triple if it was American made.  Yes, you can replace some caps or do a few other things but, the amp already functions at a high level and will the changes be noticeable.  I can't imagine any huge gains to be had.  I have thrown everything possible at the R8 without a blink from the circuits. I have used 7N7, 7F7 12au7, 12ax7, 6gu7, El 34 to KT 90.

I have owned five different amps from China HiFi,  they make good amps.  The Chinese continued to make and use tube gear after the transitor ear dominated the late 20th century.  I would do nothing and get some nice tubes and enjoy.

  9. A XO of 60Hz is about right for that speaker.  No need to force the speaker to play lower if voice/dialogue clarity is sought. Adjust the 3000 Hz band up 3 db.  Voices are mostly in the 1000-4000 Hz range for easy detection by the ear. Playing a speaker to the XO cut-off just introduces more distortion IMHO.  The RB 61 is a nice bookshelf speaker, wish  I still had a pair.

  10. Stands work very well and get the tweeter and midrange closer to ear level.  Vibrations, not a real problem and bass: get a sub sub a stop asking a speaker rated to about 50 Hz to do bass.  I have always used subs even with my large efficient Klipsch because in was equal or better than running speakers full range.

The tone will be set in the 80-300 Hz range and will determine the systems over all bass SQ.  The room.\?

Are thumb drives considered physical media?

Yes, yes , yes.  I keep a lot of those things in the car for long trips.  Let's start a thread on the days of wired speakers?????   lol.

  12. I gave up on physical media years ago because I did not want the storage problems.  I got rid of my Blu-ray/DVD collection and the CD's went years ago.  A lot of high end audio companies are pushing their streamers. Time are changing///

  13. We all like the three C's, clean, crisp and clear.  It is likely the amp and speakers are showing some age.  A new amp may be cheaper than upgrading an old amp with new capacitors, etc. and can be more powerful. Fresh XO for the speakers may get you a more lively response.

In most cases changing the amp for 6 to 4 ohms or 6 to 8 ohms makes no real difference for most basic 100 amps/AVR.

  14. Will  more power matter.  The Chorus speaker is 101 db efficient or 1 watt - 101 db at one meter.  The difference between an amp with 100 watt vs 300 watts is around 4 db.  Not much, where are the watts?  To appear twice as loud you need 10X the power.  A 1000 watt amp would be twice as loud as 100 watt amp.  Really pushing a Chorus, max spl 121 db can't be listen to for over 15 min. without hearing damage.  What is the goal or is the sound dull or not as lively as you would like O.P.

My RF 711's were 101 db and used for music and HT in a 800 cu ft. space.  I would frequently run my HT at reference level. Amps  rated up to 270 watt all 9 Ch. maxed out.  Eight 18 in. subs with 3000 watt amps. Some times I forgot my 40 watt tube amp was running the mains. The mains kept up with the system. The tube amp coasted thru reference level session without a blink.  Did I need a higher watt amp for the mains?  As far as headroom, a 40 watt amp was sufficient.

  15. A correction to my earlier post on the Oldchen K3 KT 88.  I finally decided to open up the amp since it was just sitting a round.  After replacing a fuse that appeared to be good, the amp worked.  Although this is a budget amp, I was impressed by the point to point wiring and the quality of parts.  I can't imagine the cost to produce this in the U.S.A.  After checking the bias and all connections, it was time to give it a go since I never really spent any prolonged time listening to the amp..

First off, I put the stock tubes in, 4 PSvane gold label KT 88 tubes and 3 PSvane Oldchen Fever CV 181(6sn7) tubes.  This amp has the 3 C's , clean, crisp and clear.  In many ways I prefer this over the Willsenton R8 which is an excellent amp.  The amp is simple design and well executed and is a steal cost wise compared to the Willsenton R 8.  The Fever CV 181 are one of my top two 6SN7 tubes. Other 6SN7's tube that I have are the NOS Slyvania GTB's, Tung-Sol, RCA, Hytron and others.

The Oldchen does not have the power tube rolling  of the R8 and is a straight KT 88 amps. The R8, can use El 34, 6550, KT 88 and KT 90 tubes.  The preamp tubes of the Oldchen can be rolled with noticeable effects.  This is an excellent amp for people new to tube and want something plug N play with excellent SQ.
