  1. Hey Scrappy - I've got a pair of RB-51s that I just bought to use as surrounds in my living room. Unfortunately, due to some serious WAF trouble, they aren't going to work there. If you're interested, shoot me a pm and we can work something out. Brian
  2. That was the hardest part for me, because when you are new to all of this, it is a new world. Good luck on your quest to audio nirvana. +1 Nothing beats listening to different speakers before pulling the trigger to buy.
  3. I don't know, but if it were me I'd definitely aim farther up the reference line. I love my 62s, don't get me wrong, but with that budget I'd shoot for a quality used set of RF-63or 83 and a RC-64 center and a used set of either RS-52s or 62s. Or, I'd try to find a used pair of RF-7s with an RC-7 and RS-7s. For around $2500, I'd bet you could put something like that together. You can get a used Emotiva UMC-1 and XPA-5 for around $1000. That'd leave a fair budget for a sub as well. So, I'd be patient and put together the nicer used system. Like I said, the 62s are nice speakers, but the 2 systems I mentioned above would definitely be much better... Guess that might just be my opinion, but unless I was buying a RF-7ii or better system, I wouldn't buy them new. You can get far more for your money buying used.
  4. I don't own the 7's but I think the consensus is that calling up Mike from Acoustic Sound Design gets you the best deal on the 7's & 64.
  5. Congratulations wuzzzer! That's a pair of really good deals in the last week...you're on a roll!
  6. Congratulations Mark! That's a great score for $50. A little research and, like you said, he could've gotten more, but it sounds like he wanted his space back more than he wanted any more $$. Great find
  7. Nothing like a new toy to play with around Christmas! If you get it soon enough, you can give me your impressions when you stop over for that beer... []
  8. Still one of my all-time favorite movies... Great sound, great plot!
  9. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in, but I think the EQ that Audyssey is defaulting to "off" is the parametric, which can be adjusted manually. Page 50 of the manual has a note under equalizer that says that when Audyssey is turned on, it's settings prevail over the equalizer. So, there are 2 equalizer sets, manual and Audyssey's. Maybe I've missed it so far, but I haven't found the screen where one can adjust the Audyssey specific EQ settings, (I doubt it exists). If you go to Audyssey's web site, it's obvious that the program is doing significant calculations to flatten out the response. I have yet to find anywhere in the menu or in the manual that tells you where you can adjust Audyssey's specific calculations though. Edit: Nice call Tas...beat me to the punch! []
  10. Mine did not set the equalizer bands...it looks like Audysssey defaults these to off.
  11. I'll take a look at it tonight when I get home. To be honest, I played around with so many screens and such last night that they're all running together! [] But, I'll give it a look and let you know what it's showing.
  12. Something sounds off to me...with mine, I've not had this issue at all. Audyssey set the fronts at -4.5 and the center at -3.5, and the setup sounds significantly louder and fuller after running Audyssey than prior to running it. I'm only running mine as a 3.1 system right now. Just so you know (in case you didn't), after it asks for the 3 listening positions, you can continue to add listening positions. I think you just have to select continue or something like that. I ran mine on 5 or 6 positions. I saw earlier that you mentioned you could turn it up to 100 and it wouldn't seem loud, I can't hardly get mine much above 70 for fear it'll blow out the windows. In actuality, it's very loud at 60. Not sure what's going on with yours, but something really seems off from what you've described.
  13. Wouldn't get too disappointed yet Wuzzzer...still haven't run Audyssey yet. I figured that I'll wait until the Christmas tree comes down before I do that, since it's definitely in the way. So, may yet need some help with fine tuning...which leads to more beer! As an early review, this thing works great...without much in the way of calibration, it already blows away the Yamaha. Watched Dark Knight Rises and the Avengers the last couple nights. Great movies, great sound!
  14. Well, got the problems figured out. Did a little searching on AVS and found out the issue was with the Blu Ray player output into the older TV. After a lttle trial and error, and some temporary component cabling into the TV so I could adjust the player, it appears everything is configured and in working order. Now, on to the fun stuff of actually putting the 809 through it's paces and seeing what it can do! So far, the sound is far superior to that of my Yamaha and I can definitely tell that there is more power into the speakers. Definitely glad I bought it so far...[]
  15. Wuzzer Might have to...so far nothing useful from Onkyo!
  16. Well, got mine on Christmas Eve and finally had a chance to get it all hooked up yesterday. Works flawlessly with the DVR/Cable box, but does not output video from the BluRay player or my new Apple TV. Both are hooked up to the receiver via HDMI and I have the same HDMI to DVI cable running from the receiver to the TV (yes, TV is really that old [:$]). Can't for the life of me figure out why I get sound but not video from the other 2 components...Blu Ray is hooked up with the same cable as I used on the old Yamaha, so it should work. Ran through the troubleshooting and everything. Got a message in to Onkyo support since I didn't feel like waiting on hold for their estimated "110 minutes" last night. Any thoughts/ideas? I'm stumped...especially since the cable box/DVR works just fine... Thanks!
  17. Hey wuzz...that's funny, I was waiting for you to chime in! Yeah, the Yamaha took a dump on me here...so, when I saw this deal it was too tempting to pass up. Figure that once the Yamaha gets fixed I can move it into the family room where it won't be used as much. So, once I get the Christmas tree out fo the room and everything set back up again, I'll give it a whirl. I'm sure I'll be sending you a PM in early January offering beer for help! [] Brac - thanks for the info, was actually able to cancel my order and re-order at the lower price. A great deal gets better...something tells me if I waited a couple more days, it might even be cheaper since it's dropped for a few days straight. Oh well, a really good deal regardless! Bill & Fish - thanks for the advice...I'm sure I'll have more questions as it goes. Appreciate your opinion!
  18. Just pulled the trigger also. Too good of a value to pass up for the specs it has. Will be here after Christmas so I've certainly got something to look forward to on the 26th! Do those onkyos generally work well with an external amp? That is, do they usually integrate well?
  19. Hey guys - I'm slowly in the process of building a home theater system and have a couple "what would you do" questions. At present, my system is smaller with an older DLP TV (as you can see in my signature). What I'd like to eventually do is move the RF 62s to the rear and replace with either some 63/83/7ii's and the corresponding center. That isn't going to happen overnight, unfortunately. I have an older JBL sub, as well, that I'm looking to eventually upgrade. I'm also looking in the next few weeks to replace the older TV with a Panasonic plasma (probably ST50 series). Long-winded...but to the point (and the thread title)...I have a Yamaha RXV667 that I need to take in for a warranty repair (not pushing sound to the center channel). The Onkyo is now $449 at Amazon...is it worth buying the Onkyo and moving the Yamaha, when fixed, to the family room. Or what would you do? Focus on a sub? The 809 has me intrigued due to it's price, the ability to eventually add on an external amp, and the (at least in my mind) perception of being a large step up from my current Yamaha. With it and the new TV, maybe something to build a system around? Sorry for the rambling...I'm just not sure what the best way to go is at this point and I know you guys will have some great ideas. Thanks for any input! Brian
  20. Skyfall in the theater on Friday, Dr. No a couple nights ago, and Thunderball last night. A good week of movie watching.
  21. Welcome to the forum! I couldn't agree with Scrappy more...you will be much happier with the RC-62ii than with the 52. It's a nice center and does a good job, especially with the matching RF62ii towers. If it comes down to a $$ thing, I'd buy the bigger center and forgo the surrounds until later, just to make sure you have a matching front soundstage. Plus, the RC62ii will be easier to sell when the upgrade bug strikes again later!! I think you'll find this place an excellent resource...the folks here are incredibly generous in sharing what they've learned along the way. I learn something almost every day just from reading the many posts/threads. Good luck in assembling your new system!
  22. Episode V...one of my all-time favorites.
  23. I'd echo Jason's comments. RC62 is a far better center than the 52 (which is still a fine speaker).
  24. Congrats! That thing is huge and really does make the Fortes look small...
