  1. My Cornwalls are exhibiting muffled sound at times until I crank up the volume and then they "kick in" and I turn it back down. I imagine it's oxidized connections or something as the tweeters work fine otherwise. I'd just like to have them checked out and whatever is causing the tweets to not kick-in be fixed. I also picked up the two Heresy's a few years ago and they need to be looked at and given a little tender loving care. :-)
  2. Are there Klipsch service centers anywhere in the US? I'm in New Jersey. I have several different Klipsch speakers and I'm wondering if there's some place I can take them to have them serviced. Thanks!
  3. Thanks for the suggestion. I swapped the squawkers between cabinets and the problem followed the squawker. I guess I'll be sending the K-53-K out for repair. The guy at simplyspeakers.com told me with the tweeters they were either good or if they were messed up they just wouldn't play at all. I guess this isn't the case with the squawkers because this one would play ok, then distort a bit, cut out and cut back in. Anyway, guess I'll pack it up and send it out. Anybody have any other suggestions of where I can either get this repaired or replaced? ---------------- On 7/23/2004 2:06:15 PM Stephen Phillips wrote: It may be a bad cap in the crossover. 4. I just picked up a couple Heresy's off eBay to add to my home theater setup which is fronted by a pair of Cornwall 1's. I got a matched pair of HBR's and the cabinets have seen some wear so I'm going to either have someone refinish them or *try* to do it myself. I'm leaning towards having someone do it. Looking to have them match my black Lacquer Corns. If anybody has suggestions, I'd be interested. Besides the cabinet refinishing, I found out when I received them that one K-77 tweeter was blow. Could hear that right away. I pulled the K-77 out of the cabinet and sent it off to www.simplyspeakers.com for a diaphram replacement. $48.00 shipped. Seemed pretty reasonable to me and it came back working perfectly. Now, on to my next delemma. Seems that I have an intermittant issue with one of my K-53-K squawkers. Not sure if it's the diaphram or a connection issue. I don't know WHAT it could be but I know what it sounds like. It basically seems to crackle a little then cut out..then comes back and it sounds good. But it keeps doing it. Only one of them does it. I tried disconnecting all the terminal connections from the network and then retightening them down. Doesn't seem to help. Could it just be a diaphram going or what? If I need to replace them, should I replace them with the K-55-V's or K-55 somethings to better match the corns? Also, while I'm jabbering about the speakers, I played them a bit and I had the back unscrewed for the one exhibiting the squawker problems. What I noticed is if I have the back cabinet open a bit like 2" angled, the bass seems much more pronounced. Has anyone ever ported these cabinets like the Corns? Or is that blasphemy? I could easily hear the difference in bass response between the open one and the closed one. Figured somebody here has played with this and can provide knowledgeable information on why it wasn't designed in and why the sealed cabinet is better. Anyway, enough rambling for now.. I look forward to your replies. Thanks in advance!
  5. Heresy's mounted on the walls would be fine. Just gotta fine good strong mounts and anchor them into studs. I'm in the same boat.. I have some Heritage stuff and some newer stuff. Cornwall 1's as fronts. KLF-C7 as center, RS-3's as rears. I just picked up a pair of Heresy's off eBay. First thing off the bat was one tweeter was blown. Sent it out to www.simplyspeakers.com for a diaphram replacement. $48.00 shipped. Now I'm finding one of the K-53-K mids is cutting in and out.. can't quite figure out what it is as I checked all the connections. I loosened and re-tightened all the screw connections. I didn't try melting the solder contacts. Would this be an indication of the diaphram going or is it either sound or no sound? At any rate, I was planning on using this set of Heresy's as front/rear centers. The problem with all the Heritage stuff is it's huge. I can prolly deal with the Heresy's but forget putting 6 Corns all over the place. View my profile for my equipment list with pics (minus the Heresy's I just got). Good Luck! ---------------- On 7/21/2004 12:09:32 AM Cornwalled wrote: Hello, I'm 22 and live in PA. I've been in the process of assembling a Klipsch home theater. Have Cornwalls for mains, Yamaha HTR-5650 Receiver, Panasonic 27 inch flat screen TV. I'm wondering what to use as rears. I'm thinking Heresys, except they're too short- though I could put them on stands. What would you guys think of using Chorus or Fortes? Would they not be well matched to the Cornwalls? Any input you have would be appreciated. Thanks, Jon ----------------
  6. There are several ways to go cheaper and smaller to match your Corns. None of them are the optimal solution for sound but may be better for your asthetics (or your wife's). I purchased my Cornwalls new back in the day and I've just kept them because I can't find anything that sounds as good that I would be able to replace them with. Not that I want to replace them. So, I tried to find low-cost solutions to creating my HT setup. While the speakers don't all timbre match as they should, they are *relatively* close. I'm working on replacing some of the speakers with more appropriate ones and I'll do that as I can. My point is that you can purchase cheaper/smaller speakers to round out your HT system, maintain reasonable kick-assedness, save money and keep out of divorce court. But like many things in marrage, it requires compromise. You will compromise your sound a bit, you wife will have to compromise her need for crappy ceiling mount speakers. Nothing mounted in the ceiling or walls is going to come close to your Cornwalls from my experience. Here's a link to my setup for some ideas. http://www.ravenimaging.com/bobl/audioequip/ Note that the subwoofer didn't cost me $1000 and seems to do a wonderful job after being meticulously setup and modified. It's a AudioSource SW-15 with a 200 watt amp. Was very inexpensive because it was a floor unit. The rest are Klipsch line speakers and are typically available on eBay. Anybody that ever hears my system gasps in astonishment. While it's not perfect, it certainly gets the job done and didn't cost me my marrage. Good luck.

To tell you the truth, I think the Sony amp isn't the best for the Cornwalls. I'd be better off separating the pre stage out and going to a batch of mono amps or stereo amps like the Haflers or something better. I was going to hookup my old Hafler but it seems something is wrong with it.. it just outputs noise so.. I'm stuck with the built-in amps at this point. It's not terrible but I don't think it's the right matchup. I have the full adjustments on the 1070 also. I'm crossing fairly high to the sub from the KLF-C7 because it needs it. Of course the Cornwalls don't need the sub that high but there's got to be a tradeoff somewhere. I'm in HT hell! Well, sorta.. I mean.. when I pop in a DVD and crank it up to between 1 - 5 watts, whoooo.. things are shakin! But we all know or we're figuring out that it's very damn hard to match Heritage speakers for HT and Klipsch really doesn't give us any choices in it's current crop of speakers. The KLF-C7 is a kludge and not the best one at that. An Academy is probably only minimally better if at all.. I don't really know. Hereseys might be a pretty good bet. More Cornwalls or a couple K-horns and using the Corn's in between (front/rear centers) would probably be really good but c'mon.. I'd need a huge space. Like I said.. 12. Unfortunately, there's no easy answer. You can look at what I've got in my link below in my signature. This works well. It's not the best but the best requires a HUGE room and super strong mounts for flying all your Cornwalls around the room! I'm currently looking for Academy speakers. They seem impossible to find. I never see them posted on Ebay. I got tired of trying to find some so I got the KLF-C7. It's not a perfect match for the Cornwalls but it's pretty darn good. If I can find Academy's to replace it, I might have to get another for the rear cause I'm not too keen on flying a Heresy over my RPTV or putting a Heresy on top of it. Like I said, there's no easy answer. It's a lot easier for those undescerning listeners who just get those little itty bity Bose cubes.. isn't it. ------------------ Bob Lindabury SPEAKERS Fronts: Cornwalls (2) Center: KLF-C7 (1) Rears: RS-3's (2) Sub: AudioSource SW-15 Rear Center: Umm...any suggestions? BTW, congrats on those La Scala's!! I know Rob is equally thrilled with the package that arrived on his front doorstep yesterday! Regards, Colin I'm afraid the Klipsch email reply is really looking at matches available from their current line and not at what is *best*. It's too easy to pick a couple of current line speakers and say, "good enough". Well, it's not good enough for me. Only thing I can figure for me are: Cornwall Mains Academy Front Center Academy Rear Center Heresy Surrounds These would all fit and maintain very similar timbre I imagine. What I mean't when I said Klipsch should support Heritage in HT is that they should PRODUCE new HT speakers that SPECIFICALLY match Heritage speakers. Giving us some lame RC-3 or RC-7 matchup doesn't work for me. It's bad enough I'm using what I'm using. Even though my HT setup pretty much blows away most other ones I've heard, I believe it could be quite a bit better with a closer match all the way around. ------------------ Bob Lindabury SPEAKERS Fronts: Cornwalls (2) Center: KLF-C7 (1) Rears: RS-3's (2) Sub: AudioSource SW-15 Rear Center: Umm...any suggestions? I was in high school and Klipsch were some of the best and highest priced speakers around. I joined the Navy after high school in 1977 and I was stationed in Norfolk, Va. I was sent off to Sigonella Sicily in 1979 and finaly had the money to pickup my first pair of Klipsch, 1979 Cornwalls, BB. 3. What is your current age? 45 4. Why did you choose Heritage loudspeakers over another Klipsch model? Well, let's see.. THERE WERE NO OTHER MODELS! lol..well, at that point I certainly didn't know about or care about any other models. I was looking at K-Horns or what I felt was the closest match for less money. 5. If you currently own some Heritage loudspeakers, and could purchase some more Klipsch speakers(new or used), which ones would you purchase? Why? K-horns.. why? Doh.. Academy Center - HT Heresys - HT I don't know about anybody else but I love my Cornwalls but finding matching HT speakers that will actually fit where you want them is difficult! Some people say get more Cornwalls..yeah.. ok.. righto.. you need a TON of space for something like that and a cornwall center and rear center are rediculous! Even the rears! 20. Thanks all for the comments! Shapeshifter: It's funny you should mention that. I've had the Cornwalls since 1981 and when we were shopping for a home, we viewed several in the area. One was beautiful with three acres of land, barn and everything you'd want but there was no room large enough to place my Cornwalls and audio system in it! So, we purchased this house instead! LOL The only reason we didn't get the other house was because my system wouldn't fit. TheEar: No, the Sony doesn't have to work hard.. especially when I'm using the Hafler DH-200 to power the cornwalls. <grin> I plan on hooking it up soon to see how it sounds instead of the Sony built-in amp. And to think, I was going to auction off my Hafler amp... James: Slamma Jamma is right! When turned up, I have to take everything off the tops of the cornwalls or they dance off themselves.. lol Only issue I have at this point is there's some overlap on the bass between the sub and the cornwalls so I get a raised db level at around 75-90Hz. I can't see a way to avoid this as I need the crossover to match up with the KLF-C7. Well, that issue and the issue of getting a rear center speaker or replacing the KLF-C7 with an Academy for the front and putting the C7 as the rear center. 21. I've always had an ear wax buildup problem. I used to use Q-tips a long long time ago but heard they were bad and only jammed the wax further into your ear and packed it, so I stopped. Now only place I use Q-Tips is on the outside and in the nooks and crannies. If you have some sort of ***, your co-pay is only like $10 and it takes them maybe 1hr to get you in and out. Last time I had this very VERY attractive nurse cleaning my ears. Whooo! Added bonus! I asked her a few questions like if she was the official ear cleaner. She told me she does a lot of them. I told her last time I had it done was probably 3 years ago and she told me that some guys come in once a month. Now.. I wonder *why* they're coming in for an ear cleaning once a month. LOL At any rate, it's better to get it done at the dr's because, like someone else posted, those home ear cleaning remidies are only partially effective. The little bulb syringe they provide is inadequate for the job and if you don't do it right, you can end up with an infection and you'll have to go to the dr anyway. Save yourself the hassle and just go like once a year or so depending on how your ears build up wax and you'll enjoy your audio system that much more for it. 25. quote: Originally posted by Ray Garrison: Everytime I see posts talking about the "high margins" that dealers make, I wonder if the poster has ever worked at a management level in retail. Taking forresthump's comment that "...They can give you a 25% discount & still have a 50% markup over their cost from manufacturer ..." that would mean that if a dealer's selling a pair of speakers for $1,000 list, then their cost is $500. ('cause if they discount it 25%, or $250, then they're selling it for $750, a $250 profit on the $500 item, or 50% markup.) Is making $500 on the sale of a $1,000 set of speakers unreasonable? Let's see... if I have those speakers in inventory for 6 months prior to sale (not at all unusual for a fairly expensive pair of speakers at a dealer who carries a large and varied line), and I'm paying 12% in interest to finance the cost of inventory (not unusual for a small business that is typically using unsecured credit - the bank's not gonna take La Scala's as colateral for a loan ), I've got $60 in interest charges. That leaves $440. If I pay $15 / ft on my lease (which is really, really cheap around here), and I have small store, say 4,000 sq ft, I'm paying $5,000 per month in rent. Add in electric, heat, telephone, other monthly bits, I'm probably up around $6,000 / month. I have a technician, who I probably pay something in the area of $45K if he's any good (again, this is cheap around here.) With benefits, that's another $4,500 per month. I have to pay myself a salary, let's be conservative, I want to make enough to live fairly well but not get rich on this... say $80K (which is less than I'd make doing just about anything else.) That's another $6,700 per month. So far, we're generating $17,000 / month in costs. I have salemen, who probably get a small base plus a commission on each sale. If their base is, oh, $24,000 and I have two of them, that's another $4,800 month fully loaded, more or less. Now I'm up to about $23,000 per month. If my salesmen made NO commission, I'd have to sell 52 pairs of those $1,000 per month just to break even, and we haven't talked about the cost of maintaining a repair facility, inventorying spare parts, test equipment, interior furnishings, advertising and a gazillion other things. If the salesmen make a small commission, say 10%, my profit per speaker drops to $340, and I have to sell 68 pair per month to break even. Why did I bother with this? It just bothers me when a retailer is critized for charging a reasonable markup to cover the cost of providing the service he's offering. Does that mean that everyone should pay that price? No, I don't mean to imply that there's some moral imperative to shop at the dealer... I bought my DVD player over the Web, 'cause I didn't need the services a dealer would offer me when I bought it. But if you DO appreciate the opportunity to listen to speakers before you buy them, to take home and try out an amp before you commit to purchasing it, to returning a pair of speaker cables and trying something else if the one's you got don't work too well in your system, then for goodness sake don't ***** about the price the dealer has to charge in order to keep his doors open. Ray Great post! I have nothing but respect for retail audio shops.. well, maybe not TheWiz and the other chains that hire minimum wage sales people who don't know anything. I had a friend who also owned an electronics shop in Ohio. He tried to compete with online for a while and soon found out that you have to charge apppropriately for your retail business. For the knowledge, support and convienience you provide to your customers. He ended up selling at retail and his business was thriving because he DID supply the added customer support that you don't get online. That being said, I don't fault the online people for selling cheaply. They have less overhead. If you're a buyer, you have to make the choice. Buy from a local retailer, pay a bit more BUT have the support and service or buy online at deep discounts and hope for the best. It's up to you. ------------------ Bob Lindabury SPEAKERS Fronts: Cornwalls (2) Center: KLF-C7 (1) Rears: RS-3's (2) Sub: AudioSource SW-15 Rear Center: Umm...any suggestions?
