  2. Forget about Alpine subwoofers...this is what you need. 56mm travel one way, now that's incredible! They're even coming out with an 18" version. Seriously though, most of the car audio market is waaaay over priced. I haven't looked at what Alpine has to offer but I'd bet you'd get a better sub cheaper by looking at Adire Audio, Stryke, Blueprint Drivers(www.audioliquidators), or Resonant Engineering(www.respl.com).
  3. They can be put right up against a wall. They have a threaded rod for speaker mounts or keyholes for screws. They're also front ported so you don't have to worry about blocking the port. I uploaded a pic of the back of my brother's KSB1.1's. Which Wharfedale are you using? The KSB1.1's can sound very good if coupled with a subwoofer.
  4. Are KSB1.1's too big for your setup? They would sound much better than the quintet's as mains. Something like KSB1.1's for mains and surrounds, paired with the matching KSC-C1 would probably run around $300. This would blow the quintet's away.
  5. If you want to save even more money, you could look to ebay or ubid for the older KSB bookshelves, the models are the KSB3.1, 2.1, and 1.1. The matching center is the KSC-C1 and the matching surround is the KSB-S1 but any of the bookshelfs would do fine as surrounds as well. These bookshelfs are front ported so you can put them smack up against the wall for surround use if you had to. My brother used to have KSB3.1's as his mains and I thought they were very impressive. We lined the inside walls with polyfill and it made the midrange butter smooth. It was a very dramatic change, I suggest people try it out.
  6. I think you might get more responses if you try the DIY section at Home Theater Forum.

Why do you say no center channel would match with those? ---------------- I said don't use a Klipsch center channel if you're using the Wharfedale bookshelf(unless you plan to change them to something Klipsch) because it won't be timbre matched. What is timbre matching? I'm glad you asked... Timbre Matching: This is the term used to describe a set of speakers that are sonically matched to eachother. This is very important to ensure that you get the same "type of sound" out of every speaker. Imagine a motorcycle in your left speaker...as it moves towards the center the sound starts changing...by the time it gets to your center speaker the motorcycle now sounds like a moped! That's not good HT. Ensuring that your speakers are timbre-matched will ensure a good sonic imagine throughout your room. Many companies now offer HT speaker packages with similar drivers in them...those will definitely be timbre matched. This is from HTF's newcomer primer.
  8. If you're gonna continue to use your Wharfedale bookshelf's, I'd suggest you try to at least find the matching center off ebay or ubid.com. Nothing in the Klipsch line will properly mate with what you have. Surround matching is less critical but that doesn't mean it's not important. Quintet's would work here if you're tight on space but I'd still prefer something from the same line of speakers as my front three speakers.
  9. I've done 250+ transactions on ebay and I haven't heard or thought of a ways to tamper with the feedback ratings. I would feel confident buying from him. I also like the new percent postive feedback thing ebay added.
  10. The KSF8.5's were my first Klipsch speakers. Even though the current synergy line replaced them, they sound much more like the RF-3II's than any of the current Synergy line. Same goes for the KSF-C5 and RC-3II.
  11. I think Klipsch has a winner as well. With their corner porting idea, they can fit a longer port and let the sub go deeper. The continously variable phase is also a big plus in properly integrating a subwoofer. Doubling the amplifier like they said in the S&V ad can't hurt either. These are suppossed to replace the current KSW subs aren't they? If so, they look a hell of a lot better as well. I also don't know what the big stink is about the new speakers looks, I think they look better. The front baffle has a more cohesive and smooth look. The new magnetic grill is cool as well.

It says 350watts RMS handle, but i have a 100watt stereo receiver rated at 8ohms... this mean i should get an amp for like studio monitors, ya know the ones that are in most music gear catalogs? and secondly, can i still get an amp less then 350watts, cause that may be a little overpowering in a 12x12 room? cause if so then i'm going to go with this passive sub idea, plus it goes down to 25hz and thats what i'm looking for. I haven't seen any mono-amps either know of any? thanks for the suggestions, i know i'm asking ever question imaginable. ---------------- Your 100 watt stereo amp should power it fine. My brother is using my Audiosource Amp5.1(100w@4ohms) to power a DIY sub using the original SVS CS driver(current driver is capable of more output). It's tuned to 17hz which means it has less overall output than the 25-31cs but he can still hit well over 100dB in his 1500cu ft room.

I only got half power going to mine now and for me (insane & retarded) it is ENOUGH. ---------------- You can call me fully retarded, because I'm thinking of doing each in a 7.5 cu ft enclosure tuned to 19hz, with an 8" port for each. My brother ordered an AV-15 for his car with the 1st preorder, we built a 3 cu ft sealed enclosure. He doesn't have a car yet so I'm using that right now.
  14. ---------------- Hey Frankie: The pro amp I'm using has NO volume control, just an ON/OFF switch. So I've been using a Pioneer pre-amp with it also. Like I said above, this set-up works fine for a split signal (full-range) from the head unit, but will do nothing with the LFE output. Is it possible the voltage output from the head unit is THAT much greater than from the LFE? Wouldn't using a line amplifier (like the SVS Bass Interface or your RCA amp) in effect be like just putting ANOTHER pre-amp in-line before the amp? A pre-pre amplifier? Just how many damn pre-amps do these pro amps need, anyway? Considering I'm already using ONE pre-amp to no avail for the LFE, maybe TWO might work? I'm gonna go for one of those SVS Bass thingys soon, but they are back-ordered right now anyway. I just may have to take you up on that RCA amp doo-dad... ---------------- I really don't know what to tell you. What is the Pioneer preamp you're using? Is it no output with the pro amp or just low ouput?
  15. I got my amp from Zzounds.com. Samson S1500 - 750Wx2@4ohms for $369 shipped Samson S2000 - 1000Wx2@4 ohms for $$429 shipped (keep in mind these amps can do do 4ohms bridged) These amps are factory resealed and they have a limited supply. I was going to get the S2000 but for the AV-15's but I did the math and it only get's me about 1dB more output so I figured I'd save $60. What was the problem you were having with hooking up a pro amp? I had a problem with my Yamaha receiver driving a Samson S1000, it couldn't output enough voltage to drive the Samson. Is this what you're talking about? If so, I fixed the problem by boosting the signal with this RCA mini amp I got for $60. Later I bought the SVS Bass Interface to do the same thing but it adds variable phase, and subsonic filter. I still have that RCA amp if you're interested in buying it. I'd sell it for $35 shipped.
  16. ---------------- Wait lemme check my math: how many Cerwin-Vega bass bins could I have got for $600 some dollars? ANSWER: NO CERWIN VEGA BASS BINS HAHAHAHA ---------------- LOL Congrats on the new sub. I just sold my CS Ulta and decided to get on the 2nd preorder for the AV-15's, I'm getting two. Also just got a Samson S1500 yesterday for $369 shipped. A 24" cube doesn't seem that big until you actually see it does it. I bought an Infinity Sub that was a little larger than a 20" cube and it was much larger than I figured.
  17. Not an authorized dealer, but it's new and only $216: RC-3II from Crazy Eddie
  18. It's a better match than the current Synergy center's but I've seen used RC-3's around $200 and sometimes a tad under. I'd hold out for a little and keep an eye on ebay or audiogon.com for a Reference center.
  19. I actually don't like the word musical when dealing with subwoofers. If one subwoofer excels with HT and not music and another excels with music and not HT, I don't want. A subwoofer should not have a sound of it's own, if it has a sound of it's own, it's adding something to the sound that shouldn't be there or it's not reproducing what it should. I think a better word to describe a good subwoofer that has low distortion and can play low would be "accurate".
  20. Here's one of Tom Vodhanel's posts from HTF, he does an exellent job of describing what makes a subwoofer *musical*. The *musicality* of a subwoofer is dominated by several factors non related to the subwoofer at all (or related incidentally---like a built in XO). The room, the positions of the listening position and position of the subwoofer, the lowpass and highpass XOs used for both the subwoofer and the rest of the speakers , the phasing of the subwoofer relative to the rest of the speakers, and the calibration of the subwoofer. If you are using dipolar mains, a dipolar subwoofer will also have the advantage of a like acoustical dispersion pattern. The primary factor not related to the listening room or the setup method is simple user preference. The deepest bass has the longest soundwaves...the longer the soundwaves, the more of a bass *decay* the room will have. Deep bass takes time to decay, that is natural and inherent to the beast. Some folks mistake the longer decay for "slow" bass...when in fact, it is actually a more faithful reproduction of the source material.(compared to some of the smaller *musical* subs that cannot produce clean output <30hz). Then there is an issue of harmonics. Much of the pitch of the musical bass/drum will be determined by the number and amptitude of the harmonics of the fundametal note played. To some ears, if those harmonics are emphasized...even by a very small amount...the *pitch* of the bass guitar is made more obvious. The pacing of the bass line(s) become easier to follow...and folks can feel like that aids in the musical nature of the source playback. So in the end, the most accurate audio reproduction may not be what someone prefers. Some folks feel a well setup SVS is very musical, others disagree...it is largely a matter of personal preferences. (which is why the 45 day trial period is a good idea ). Group delay is one of those terms that oftens gets introduced to a thread like this, but only in ignorance. In this context, (16-22hz tuning for most of the ported subs being mentioned) group delay isn't going to make an audible difference on any bass guitar, kick drum ,piano...ect. Tom V. SVS[/i>
  21. ---------------- oh yeah by the way nice system Frank is that your daughters? ---------------- No I don't have a daughter, but thanks for the compliment on the system. ---------------- btw I dont know if you know this or not but stuped is someone that would could call someone else stuped. ---------------- I didn't call you stupid, I said the thread was going to turn stupid. Sorry you took it that way. ---------------- when you switch over to something at least decent start calling me stuped. my 11 year old daughter's system would put yours to shame. sorry... ---------------- Why does what I have in my system have to do with me calling you anything? I could care less how your system, your daughter's system, or anybody else's system compares to mine. Like I said earlier, this thread was about to cross the verge of stupidity...well with your last post, you crossed it. Kain I'm sorry your post is ending up this way, since it looks like it will no longer be productive, I'm not going to respond anymore.
  22. What does a pair of the Cerwin bass bins and a pair of the Crown amps you mentioned cost?
  23. This thread is about to be on the verge of stupidity. If he doesn't like Velodyne or SVS, that fine, but I know he's just trying to start a flame war on purpose. Why does he have a Velo HGS-18 in his signature?
