  1. If you don't want to fix it just turn it off manually when not in use. Better than wont stay on which is what I just had to fix on my Sunfire sub.
  2. I have mine set up away from the corners or back walls, this kills their low end extensions but great for mid, I have a Sunfire sub that fills the bottom in nicely. I too looked into doing the Titanium mid but Bob Crites told me that not everyone cares for the upgrade so I decided to pass.
  3. It seems the company fell into a black hole for a period of time, its looking up for them maybe, they recently got sold to a company that turns companies around. I am glad they did buy them out or they would have surely gone away entirely and these great speakers would not exist. I don't think to many of the old companies are building stuff like thy used to. Klipsch was bought out by Audiovox, Polk bought out by DEI Infinity got bought out by HK. Acoustic Research and Advent went away. Anyway Wikipedia is right 99.9% of the time, I looked it up on Wikipedia, lol.
  4. Thanks, Actually I did a little more research and Sparkomatic did not acquire Altec until 2000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altec_Lansing These were made in 86
  5. Thanks, I like your too. I had two H-100's in a huge 18 x 30 living room with vaulted ceilings, still managed to rattle the room with music and movies. Really good subs for the money and then some.
  6. I got the amp back from Bill today and its flawless, great guy and easy to work with. I highly recommend him. I will recommend following the return direction on Bills site to a "T" though.
  7. There is this, should power it fine, external mounting. http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-sa230-230w-subwoofer-amplifier--300-813
  8. Capacitor on the sub amp usually. but sometimes its more or less to it than that. Does your sub hum when nothing is plugged into it?
  9. Pretty low mine went to 24 these go to 22, the Polk goes to 23.
  10. I had the less expensive H-100 and thought they were great subs, I actually returned two Klipsch RW-12's and replaced with these because IMO the Bic's simply outdid them for half the price. This is the more powerful version so one can only imagine they should do even better than the ones I had. I don't know if you have a line on one locally but if not I can recommend the H-100 and this as well http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-12-Inch-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B000092TT0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1417405376&sr=8-5&keywords=bic+acoustech+pl-200
  11. All the mods you are planning are good, I have Forte II's and bought them with upgraded crossovers and titanium diaphragms. All I have done is add some weight to the passives to bring the frequency down, it also tightened them up as well. Also I built some stands to get the horns up to ear level all per good advise here on the forum. I know what you mean, I have other speakers that are more neutral and detailed and on some things prefer them but for the most part prefer the more forward sound of the Klipsch. Also like not having to turn the volume up so loud like with the other inefficient speakers I have. Welcome.
  12. I have got these before, well made http://www.ebay.com/itm/24-Nakamichi-Speaker-banana-plug-connector-24K-Gold-USA-/270661331816?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f04ac2b68
  13. These sound great, a bit on the bright/ forward side but not harsh at all. Huge wide deep sound stage. Vocals and instruments sound natural and well placed, at times they were projected a few feet in front of the speakers. These have a high jump factor as well sometimes stuff sounds like its right next to you. These have a lot of characteristics of my Forte II's, after all Altec are famous for their horn speakers. Bass sound good, tight and not boomy, they go pretty low however I feel a sub compliments them on the way low end. They made speakers in this line until after 2000 I believe but don't know how they sounded. If anyone can find them cheap like I did I would suggest you give them a try.
  14. Like I needed more speakers, I got on CL one day and it and some guy just posted these with stands for 25 bucks. I have had the smaller version of these, the 205's and really liked them but sold them. When the seller posted these I had no idea what version they were and figured they were worth a look. So I drove in a snowstorm to check them out. Excellent condition one tweeter was pushed in but was able to take apart and push out and of course the foam was gone. I picked them up for 20 bucks. I got the foam on them and they sound fantastic, not just for the price but fantastic period. They got a good reviews from Stereophile that I happen to agree with for the most part. http://www.stereophile.com/content/altec-lansing-301-loudspeaker These came out after the buyout but from what I understand these were clean sheet design from the original team and made in the USA. The stuff I don't agree with is that these are well made and do have internal bracing, crossovers look top notch. Real wood veneers cleaned up nicely with some Old English, Grills are in good shape too. I was a little leery of the re-foam because it was an underneath cone but it was easier than over the cone job. Anyway enough rambling, some pix.
  15. I found a Klipsch KV-3 for pretty cheap to go with these, matches pretty good and sounds great. http://www.klipsch.com/kv-3/details
  16. The Local repair shop sort of fixed it but not really, after it was on for a while it would stay on but not for the full 12 minutes as it was designed, and real intermittent when it first comes on. So I sent it into Bill Flannery, if you have any vintage Carver or Sunfire gear he is the guy to send it into. I sent it in last Friday and will update this when I get it back.
  17. Thanks, whats kind of funny is I took the guys word for it that it needed repairs and sold one of my home made subs to cover the costs, a real nice guy came and picked it up yesterday and then I tried out the sub only to find there was nothing wrong with it. Oh well I can always build another, but really like what this puts out and the size of it is just insane vs. output.
  18. I got this off of CL, the owner had it fixed at a local repair shop and then thought it still had problems, turns out he just liked to listen to music real low and the internal amp would shut off. It took the repair shop 8 months to fix it and in the meantime he got another sub. It is pretty much like new and sounds fantastic, blends well with the Forte II's and will shake the house. Best of all I got it for a 100 bucks. This is the one with the single 12" no passive and rear mounted amp. Hard to imagine you get that much bass from a 13" cube.
  19. Nice! if those sound as good as they look then you re in for a real treat. Congratulations!
  20. Thanks guys, I could not imagine going back to the stock ones. And thanks Moray for the push to do this. I did think about putting some weight in there just as I got them glued together, lol. I could always cut a hole in the top and fill them with something, theres room for 30 Lbs of sand. Time to do some listening. Thanks again!
  21. I got them all done and painted, Just need to let the paint dry. Will post finished pics. got them done! now off to work.
  22. Nice work! I never used Solen on my re-builds. Looks good though.
