  1. in my area & others lascalas frequently sell for $1200-1600+ depending on condition & vintage of course. chorus & ii sell for 500-800, 800 being the high end in excellent shape. pretty darn close to $1k difference.
  2. i hear ya,, they are out there. but CL will get them out there for legit buyers. easy to weed out the scammers. just make a buyer call you & get a feel for their intentions. definitely avoid the " i will have my agent pick them up & i will pay you western union" or please email me at XXX@gmail.com.
  3. depends on the area & current demand. my opinion would say yours may be on the "high end" of what they usually sell for. i bought mine for a little over $2k last year in the midwest & see them sell for that ballpark quite often. cant comment on the west coast prices though. if they are really "mint" & being you or your family are the original owners, that will increase the value, they are worth what a buyer will pay. so if you arent in a hurry leave them at that price & let someone make a reasonable offer. or for a quick sale adjust the price some. & list them on CL & other places for max exposure.
  4. love the early gixers. had a 86 750 that was modded a bit & had a 93 engine in it. that thing was fast as heck. could beat late 90's & early 2000's 750's in short drags or the 1/4 mile. nice speakers, twins to mine. GLWS.
  5. very curious to hear your impressions. & a good deal makes it much easier to justify. my main point is/was, for average market value, the lascalas are not a thousand dollar improvement over chorus2's.
  6. a "flipper", in this regard is someone who intentionally looks to buy stuff cheap, only to turn around & jack the prices up. selling something you have owned for years (or a short period) at about the same price you got it for is NOT flipping. or even if the market has driven up the price of a somewhat rare item you have owned for a long time. things do increase over time, cars, coins, gold, antiques etc etc flipping is what fjd mentions above, when all you do is scour CL or other places (like the alerts section here) with the sole intention of taking advantage of other buyers. by taking advantage of, i mean basically snagging up all the good deals only to jack up the price so you can make a profit & line your pockets. just makes finding a good deal for the average joe that wants to OWN the item even harder. basically ruining the hobby for the non flippers. but i digress, essentially that is what businesses do, in my area we have many "stores" that do nothing but that, they frequent estate sales, auctions & garage sales looking for items they can mark up & make $$$. same with pawn shops, they are there for desperate people that need money for whatever reason & then openly re-sell the item for 2-5+ times what they paid for it. personally i would probably excell at that but my morals seem to get in the way. takes a special kind of person to take advantage of you in your hard times, only to turn around & take advantage of the next guy in the door by jacking up the price. but in reality, businesses do that every day, from the groceries you buy to the pair of jeans you are wearing, guaranteed that sears buys levis for less than $10 a pair & charges you $40+. technically every business out there is a "flipper"
  7. not offended at all... likewise, "dont interpret my comments the wrong way." i started my post with "no offense intended." just found the hip hop & rap blanket statement kind of funny. you must own lascalas to come off so offended.... while i dont own lascalas, i DO own k-horns, & i will still use the word "limited" or maybe a better term is unbalanced. for as strong as the mids are, the bass is disproportionate. this isnt just me, do a search on here or especially other non biased forums, i frequently see people saying the lascala & even the might k-horn are, what i prefer to call not proportiante to the mids. the mid & high sections are without a doubt overpowering. especially when driven with "mid-fi" s/s gear. if you have high dollar or tube amps & preamps etc then yes they are probably a better speaker, but for the averge joe with average gear, i still feel the chorus are a better "all around" speaker. each has their attributes. just my opinion.
  8. no offense intended... but saying "if you like rap & hip hop the chorus are for you" is way off base. thats implying they are only good for that kind of mucic, sorry but the chorus excell at every type of music & IMO are a better overall speaker than the lascala.... not as big, cost less & dont need tubes or high dollar gear to sound good. lascalas are a great speaker but kind of limited in what they are good at.... mids, highs, "detail" yes, good chest punding bass that is in rock, jazz, modern alternative & heavier rock etc, not so much. unless you adjust tone controls or EQ to boost the bass, myself & many others feel they are actually lacking in the bass dept. or at least "unbalanced" compared to their mids & highs. in regards to the OP's question, i would say there is indeed a "difference" in SQ, not saying one is better than the other, thats a personal preference, however saying the chorus are only good or better if you like rap & hip hop is not a valid statement at all. also consider the cost of the lascalas, usually they are $1000-$1500 while chorus can be had for 600-800, sometimes less. i would not say the LS are worth a grand more in sq. do some research & see all the comments about the lacking bass of the LS, more often than not, people say they need a sub to balance them out. they may have more "accurate" bass in theory, but you dont hear theory. only saying my opinion of the 2 pairs of lascalas i have heard, they were nice & of course had very strong, if not overwhelming mids, but they dont have the balance of the chorus or forte speakers IMO. chorus do everything good, if not great & ive only heard one pair on lesser quality gear than the lascalas. definitly listn to them with music you are familiar with on your chorus before buying them.
  9. think he meant m/s for mineral spirits... there is no water damage. its just one speakers top is sun faded... so i DO want to change the appearance of the finish. i want to darken it a shade or 2 in order to bring it back to the original color. i appreciate all the suggestions but the different opinions everyone states are making my head spin. one person say use mineral spirits to clean, another says dont use that. one says murphys oil soap, another says it will damage the wood.... forums can be a great resource of information, but they can also be a conundrum of conflicting info. heres what i finally did for cleaning.. used a very damp rag, almost dry, with a very diluted dish detergent, wiped very lightly & got quite a bit of dirt & grease on the rag. no damage to the surface at all. then used a light coat of lemon oil to condition them so they aren't overly dry after cleaning. next step will be howards in the maple shade for the sun faded top, it gets great reviews & i do need some stain added back for color. again i appreciate all the advice on this, will post pics when i do the top surface. thanks.
  10. sorry, they may have some parts like diaphrams etc... but no woofers or individual surrounds, dust caps, cones etc.
  11. ok, thats what i was asking about, just cleaning the years of oils & residue off the surface. not trying to remove the factory applied oil finish. just like prepping a car for paint, its always a good idea to clean & remove wax or grease before sanding, otherwise you just rub all that crap into the surface. MOS is said to be caustic & the name is misleading, its ok for a poly or cleared surface but real wood it can hurt. thanks for the reply.
  12. klipsch doesnt sell any heritage parts, at all. ebay wont have just the surrounds either, maybe a complete passive from time to time. simply speakers will recone them & use the correct accordion surround, but they dont sell just the surround. as for foam i wouldnt bother, it dries out over time & will fall apart. the best way to repair the surround is to apply some flexible silicone type material to the back side for best cosmetics or the front too if you can get a black color. i use & suggest an automotive gasket sealer type, like permatex ultra black, it is very durable & flexible & will hold an air tight seal. as for weight issues... i would suggest forming your own opinion on that... but if you ask moray james he will say to add up to 2.5oz of extra weight to improve the bass. a foam surround wont weigh much more than a few grams compared to the accordian surrounds. if you want to do that it should be just fine.
  13. opus: im talking the average used market price, not forum members that might be a little more keen to their value. you know as well as i do that2-3 pair recently popped up in the midwest for $500-600. & i see that quite often over the last couple years. just saying what ive seen lately.
  14. cool! glad a member here got them. & i like how you ambiguously posted they had been sold.... seems the accordion surrounds are commonly torn or damaged. my recent forte 2's had the same problem, its very thin & fragile. klipsch should have stuck with the thick rubber surrounds used in the original fortes or on the forte 1 & 2 woofers. much more durable.
  15. RCB: can you elaborate on the cleaning of oil finishes. as with any surface, over the years dirt does build up as well as grease & residue from being touched, smoke build up, etc. so before re-oiling or if light sanding is needed for minor restoration or repair, what do you suggest using to clean them? i have heard everything from paint thinner/mineral spirits to murphys oil soap to a mild detergent on a dampened rag. curious what your opinion is on murphys, many here hate the stuff. how do we clean dirt & non wanted oils & residue from these oil finish speakers?
  16. this was a pawn shop selling them, bet they could have been had for $650ish. he offered me the $700 with no hesitation at all, bet if i offered $600-650 cash in person he would have taken it. as a pwn shop i bet he gave about $400 for them, or the package was about $700. pawn shops pay very little & mark prices up very high. anyone here get them? i was just going to post this morning... WHY ARE THESE STILL FOR SALE???
  17. i have used uship for car parts in the past, its a nice option but makes it hard to line up a shipper for when/where you need it. basically uship is a reverse auction type system... you post the ad for what you want shipped then you have to wait for "shippers" in the area to offer their bid on the price. if you can wait for all that to happen & if you even get a shipper to meet your terms then thats great. however, when buying things that are sought after items & usually listed on craigslist you just dont have the time for all that to fall into place before another buyer, usually more local, will snag them up. unless you can pay the seller upfront & trust them enough to do that with no protection at all like ebay can offer, uship usually wont work out. & keep in mind, most shippers are just private people with a truck or van etc. as for fair price for chorus2 speakers, i have seen them sell all the time for $550-$700. IMO anything higher they better be 100% mint or literally like new in factory boxes... & even then, $800 or so would be tops. unless you have a pair like what colter had (which he should have kept if he now wants a pair) that are literally new in box, never removed or played, those would have a collector value & fairly priced at what they sold for new or even higher. dont let this recent frenzy of people wanting chorus's fool you, while they are desired they are not "rare" or hard to find. just be patient. i just missed 3 pairs in my area recently for 500-600. & the $500 pair turned into a bidding war because the seller was bombarded with interests & offers higher than their asking price. good luck on your search.
  18. welcome. i have a few unanswered questions posted on this & another recent thread. answer away if you wish to. whats best to clean oiled finishes with? whats products do you use for maint & minor restore? what is best to use on a laquer finish? any other suggestions im sure others can use.
  19. thanks muel. i will stick with the lemon oil for cleaning &/or maintnance.
  20. thanks, i didnt mean actually spraying water on the surface, just a lightly dampened rag with a detergent of some kind to get the dirt & grease off the surface. nothing to soak in or absorb, just a damp rag. so what is best to CLEAN with? mineral spirits? lemon oil? murphys oil soap?
  21. wow budman, those do look very nice. but how was the finish to start with? if you see my pics the one top is very faded, almost to an oak color compared to the other one. i appreciate the suggestions though & will be experimenting very soon. & plan to do what colter said & test on the backside of the bases first. as a side note & not intended personally to anyone.... but i get a kick out of forum advice sometimes, im a member at many other automotive & computer related forums as well... the advice you get is frequently contradicting to others advice given. in this case the murphys oil soap thing, there are other members here that say DO NOT USE M.O.S! as it is caustic & can actually damage oiled real woods that can absorb it. another example is suggestions to use a wax on oiled woods... klipsch actually says do not use any wax products on oiled woods. makes one have to take many suggestions with a grain of salt or decide if an "opinion" or uneducated guess is correct. i usually ask for suggestions & then go with the majority, & then my own outside research as well. & when i give advice its usually not based on opinion, unless asked for an opinion on something like "what speaker sounds better." i try to reserve advice for things i actually know about. opinions are usually, well, opinions, not based on fact. for the time being i think i will try the howards restorer in the walnut shade & go from there. thanks again for everyones input.
  22. absolutey 100-140wpc is enough for almost any klipsch speaker. unless you want real concert level sound or trying to fill a movie theater sized room. im sure you know but fortes & other heritage speakers are VERY efficient & do not need big power. shoot, my fortes sound amazing on my 90wpc onkyo 605 AVR in a decent sized living room. unless you are truely unhappy with your current setup i dont see any need to spend 500-1000 to add ~60 watts. while extra headroom on an amp is a good thing, you probably are more than fine with 100-140 watts for teh fortes or any heritage speaker. IMO of course.
  23. wow budman, those do look very nice. but how was the finish to start with? if you see my pics the one top is very faded, almost to an oak color compared to the other one. i appreciate the suggestions though & will be experimenting very soon.
  24. was just curious why you had that opinion. most people like adcom, especiallly in the "budget" price range. i have owned/own many different adcoms over the years, mainly the gfa-5xx & 2nd series 5xx. i currently have 2 555ii & short of going to much higher end stuff at a much higher price, i cant see how the "build quality" can get much better. adcoms are tanks & have some pretty good parts internally & for me have been very reliable. plus they are brutes when it comes to power & bass output at 200wpc & 600w bridged @ 8 ohms, 800 @ 4ohms. while they may not be the most musical amps there are they do pretty darn good compared to some higher end stuff i have heard. & the smaller 535 & 545 actually sound "better" than the bigger 555 & 565 IMO at "normal" listening levels. but for concert level volumes on speakers that can take or need the power the 555ii is hard to beat... for the price of course. i own a 200wpc rotel rb990 & an onkyo m-504 @ 165wpc. the adcom 555ii looks much beefier inside & kicks their butts in the bass & volume category but the rotel & onkyo do have a "smoother" more musical sound at lower listening levels. but as with everything in this hobby there are too many factors that come into play, other gear in the system, speakers, room etc. but personally i would not put adcoms build quality or sound at the bottom of any list.
