I came across an old Sony CDP-85ES Elite 5-Disc Changer. Boy does that bring back memories...not to mention the fact that it's from the March after I was born...

Well you must be pretty young. :P

I am the youngest here that I know of. :)

But yeah...the serial/manufacture date appears to be March 1990, it's just two months younger than I.

  2. I wouldn't use them as side surrounds...dipole surrounds tend to work better as they're multidirectional.  The next thing is related to timbre matching...the series II reference is different from the regular reference.  It's a matter of opinion, but the RS/RB's are indeed superior to the R's.

  3. If you're going to spend the scrap on the R-15's, you might as well keep your eyes and ears open for some good deals on your local CL and eBay for some nice RS speakers instead.  I've seen some RS-25's, and 35's go for between $100 and $200 shipped in the last week.

  4. Corrosion is in the headphone jack and around the Phono and Tosslink out's.  The Control out is in good shape.  The rust is near where the paint has chipped on the top.  There's no rust or damage to the simulated wood on the sides.

Will get those pics either tomorrow night or Sunday afternoon :)

  5. I'll try and get some pictures taken this weekend.  :)

I know I need to get some cleaner to clear away the corrosion.  Also anyone have any tips to clean in between buttons and in tight corners?  The compressed air just doesn't do the trick.

  6. I have recently done some digging around in closets around the house as we're trying to lighten the load here.  I came across an old Sony CDP-85ES Elite 5-Disc Changer.  Boy does that bring back memories...not to mention the fact that it's from the March after I was born...

Anyway, it seems to be in good working order inside, but the outside has some rusting, there's some corrosion on the connectors and some paint chipping.  I'd like to get this cleaned up to sell, as I have no need for it anymore, and have found they go from like-new between $250 and $500, to used around $130-$180.

Does anyone have any tips I can use to get this unit fixed up and what things I should pay attention to in order to make sure it continues to function well?  Most of the issue's I've seen appear to be cosmetic, but I have yet to open the casing up to peer inside.  Anything I should check for?

    Nice pieces you've got there.

    I love RF-25s and am(was  ) a big Onkyo fan.

    GLWS!  :)

What made you change your mind?

    I got a pair of RF-7s.  ;)

Heh, I guess I should have been more specific in my question:

what turned you off of Onkyo?

The RF-7's don't play nice with Onkyo...

    See this thread https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/153691-disappointed-with-my-rf-7s/

  8. Story time for Klipschers!

I work on the side at PetCo.  Our store is right next to Best Buy - which is the anchor store.  On Wednesdays, typically people are setting up their tents for Friday.  By about 8 PM, people usually have electrical wires running from their tents at Best Buy, to our electrical outlet outdoors - as we're the only ones who have them.

On Thanksgiving 2009, one of my bosses and I went in around 9 AM to feed the animals and make sure all of them were taken care of.  We noticed one of the 50 ft long extension cords running from the tents to our electrical outlet.  Upon leaving the store that morning (the temperature was around 12 F, with snow falling), we shut down the electrical circuit to the outdoor outlet, as well as unplugged the cord from the wall before we left.

As I was pulling away from the stoplight I noticed who appeared to be a husband and wife (redneck style) come bursting out of the tent and running over to the outlet.  Too bad that was in vain.  It's now a store tradition to shut down the outdoor outlet the Monday before Thanksgiving.

driving them with an Onkyo...not good.

    QFT

I had to google that

Me too, and I'm pretty sure I'm the youngest one here

I'm picking up an Emotiva later today. I'll try that out before making a decision on the mod.

Thanks for your help, guys. I'll be back later.

It saddens me that the consensus on my Onkyo is so negative, but it should work well as a pre-amp, right?

I'd take bets that you're only second youngest...and no, I didn't have to google it. lol

In August I'll be in St. Louis, that's about my southern limit. lol

Guess you'll have to see about Gorm's super-awesome packing and shipping. :P

    Hi, Flame,

What will be bringing you to St. Louis?  I am 30 miles due west of downtown STL. . . .

I'm a returning student to Maryville.  I had to take a year off this academic year.

  11. My current budget is $300.  I'm just trying to figure out what's going to work out best for that.  The problem is, I'm wanting either a Speaker C option to control an additional room (the deck - come summertime).

This is the budget I've been given to work with.  The main issue right now though is the fact that most of the audio that is coming through the 730 is in 2 channel instead of 5, which is what I'm currently trying to resolve by wondering if just using an extra Yamaha with HDMI and then pre-outing would work.  I'm also trying to figure out if it has any benefits or cons over just going the route of not doing anything for a while and getting a nice used Marantz amp.
