  1. I've followed this thread with much interest, as it digressed into politically correct/incorrect verbiage..of course, none of us are going to agree on certain topics. I have to applaud Dean for keeping his cool, and addressing each attack on a one one one basis. I'm a little disappointed by Kelly (MH) for agreeing with Dean, than blasting him, after Jazmans comeback. (Kelly, you offer the best audio advice I've ever seen, but let's keep the politics out of here..that goes for all of us..me especially) Jazman, yeah you've gone thru more than most of us...but see above. I'm luckier than most of you guys, living in Alaska for more than 35 years..I don't have to experience the aggression of living in the lower 48..I'm a true believer in the "full boat" theory..aggression due to overpopulation! (NOT to start another thread!) People carry guns up here, and no one considers it a threat! It's not a self defense for crimes, it's a deterrent for bear attacks! And no, most of us don't shoot animals for fun. Or club seals..let's not start that! Let's keep this to audio..what we appreciate best..I certainly appreciate the info I have gathered here.. And who associated religion with guns?? Geez! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  2. Rowooo sounds great! I'm looking for a new preamp in the future also! Two questions.. 1. Does the Mac have tone controls?? 2. Which Adcom preamp were you using previously?? Thanx! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  3. well.. I changed woofers, and the problem followed the woofer..not the cabinet. So I know I have at least one bad driver...the other one may be bad, but not near as pronounced as the other. Andy thanx for the tip on the sealed (or lack thereof) cabinet..I didn't realize this could be a problem. They're sealed up now! I will order a new woofer from Klipsch this week. Thanx all for the input! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  4. Andy thanx for all the help on this matter- I'll swap woofers tomorrow, and post the results. These speakers aren't critical, as I run the khorns all the time..sometimes, when there's more than 2-3 people over they have to sit in odd locations, and I have the heresys on to supplement the horns i.e. filling in the areas outside the horn envelope..again that's not too often but I know what these little speakers can do, and I want the most out of them. I'd probably go for new woofers, as I live in a very small town, and there's no such speaker re-cone shops for hundred of miles.. Thanx again for all help- Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  5. Actually, I did turn them over and sure enough, you were correct. They did have risers at one time, and no one plugged the holes! So I filled the holes with wood filler, from the inside and outside..and it seemed to help a bit. But they still do it, one a great deal more than the other. So next I'm gonna switch woofers, and see if the problem follows the woofer..if so, I'll know I have a bad one ..and of course if not, I'll know that cabinet isn't sealing properly. Also..is there a chance of a component in the crossover network being bad?? I did tighten all connections, and also all drivers to the cabinet! Thanx again for all the great advice! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  6. Andy thanx for the reply! It's sure be nice if that's the only problem. I'll check em out tonight..maybe the drivers have backed away from the mounting..I'll check that and the seal on the back.. also, how did you know they were 1982?? How is the serial number(s) deciphered?? Thanx again, Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  7. Tom thanx for correcting me..you are right..I read that somewhere and got my terminology screwed up..amp clipping destroys speakers as you described..so that said..can anyone answer my questions about the year of the speakers/how to order new drivers?? Thanx! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  8. Hello all you knowledgable types.. I bought a pair of used Heresys a year or so ago..both type HBR serials 118W705/118W651 (I do have a pair of Khorns, bought the Heresys as supplementals and for sentimental value) Anyway..I never played them loud until the other day, and the woofers clipped..mostly one of the speakers, but the second one did too..but not nearly as noticeble. When I say loud, I don't mean ear bleeding, just squeezing the rock and roll out of them. I had two pairs of Herseys in the late 70's, and I played them MUCH louder than this..and they never ever clipped..so I suspect the previous owner(s) may have abused them..I tried two different amps..an 8 watt tube amp, and a 100 watt SS amp..both had similar results. So I don't think this is an electronics issue.. Here's my question(s) First off, what year would these be?? I suspect somewhere in the 70's..there are no speaker risers built in. Secondly, how do I go about ordering new woofers?? I can find anything physically wrong with the drivers, but I know that doesn't mean anything. Do I call Klipsch directly? I have ordered parts for my Khorns (two-three years ago, with the expert advice of Bob G) but those were other parts then drivers. Thanx all for your advice! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  9. Mr. Klipsch was an audio genius, and has made us all believers in his extraordinary speakers..he made us question our other components, always searching for a source worthy of his fine products! Listening to music has been one of my lifelong hobbies, and I'd like to join others here in thanking PWK for allowing me to get as close to possible to the artists via his creations. Thank you Paul, for my wonderful Klipschorn speakers. They're for life. My sincere condolences to your family. Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  10. oops.. how DO the amps (or how DOES the amp) compare? I need to proofread before I hit the submit button! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  11. Edster how does the Welborne amps compare for soundstage?? And was the Zen amp clipping? Thanx for the help! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  12. rowooo sorry..I re-read your post..my questions pertain to the VTL-not Marsh..got ahead of myself.. Thanx! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  13. thanx all agin for the advice! leok-I have tried the Creek remote attenuator ($200.00) I sent it back-it was a good unit, no doubt but it didn't do anymore than a less expensive attenuator did (see first post-I have one in the system) Only diff is the Creek is remote-the one I use now is not. Also, talking to Steve at Decware, he seems to feel that an attenuator between the preamp/source and amp invites clipping..as it compresses the signal. Not being a rocket scientist myself, I can't attest to that, but he certainly seems to know what he's talking about..and I've certainly heard a lot of great reviews about his products! Thanx for the suggestion though-I appreciate all input. Rowooo-does the Marsh have any phono inputs? I'm kinda thinking towards the Decware preamp, if the Zen amp does it for me..but I'm open to suggestions-thank you! MaxG..thanx for replying. I'll definitely let you know how I perceive the Zen amp..I've researched it, looked at the reviews, and believe me I'm jazzed! Steve gives a 30 day guarantee, so what have I got to lose?? As for the CD player being connected to the Zen amp, that was his suggestion. The Zen has a built in pot volume control..so it'll work coupled directly. He WANTS me to remove the preamp, as comparison. I'll definitely look at the ZTPRE if the zen works for me. As stated in an earlier post, he steered me clear of the more expensive pre, and said I should try the amp first, as this may be the problem As for the possible bass (or lack of it) problem, I too utilize a sub for the lows..not too much either (altho I have been known to accent it if the mood calls for it!) I use the Bob Carver true sub..that little bugger sure puts out! Anyway, I'll report on the Zen in another post when I receive it..Steve said it will take 2-3 weeks to build/send. Thanx again all! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  14. first, thanx to all of you that responded. I was intrigued by all and checked internet sites for the aforementioned preamps. The Decware that MaxG suggested piqued my interest, so I emailed Steve Deckert, and he suggested I call him. I talked to him today, and explained to me that the problem was more than likely in the amp and preamp..and that I'd notice a bigger change in the amp than the pre. That said, I ordered a Zen Triode amp, with a 30 day guarantee. I've enjoyed the 300B SET that I have, but I've read a lot of great reviews right here on this BB singing the praises of the zen amp. And Steve said to be prepared to be surprised! So I'm gonna give it a go. Be advised I will go directly from the CD player to the amp, eliminating the pre amp whilst comparing the differences. Then we'll think preamp. I'm glad I'm not alone in my crazy quest for that unattainable perfect sound! Good thing I have a wife that understands! She says I could have a lot of worse habits!! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  15. thanx all for answering! MaxG the decware sounds inticing..is the bass response acceptable in this amp? Are the highs too harsh? That's what I notice in my Adcom setup.. My volume control is almost useless in the Adcom due to the KHorn's efficiency rating..I have a passive attenuator between the preamp/amp..will the output selection i.e.hi/low on the Decware take care of this problem?? Thanx for your input! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  16. I've been absent from the bulletin board for awhile, as I ventured from this town, and then moved back after 8 months. Anyway, I need some of your expertise advice. I'm looking for a nice tube preamp, with phono inputs if at all possible. I currently run the Adcom GFP-565 which is a nice preamp, but what with Klipschorns I believe tubes all the way around would be less harsh. I have 1982 KHorns (purchased new) Assemblage SET300B amp, and an Adcom GCD750 CD player. Also run a JVC QL5YF turntable, purchased new. (am I dating myself??) Any suggestions on a nice smooth (not too expensive!) tube preamp?? Thanx all! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  17. Thrusti Parts Connex is out of business?? This is new to me. I bought an Assemblage 300B amp from the a couple of years ago, and really like it. (powers my Khorns) I syill need to get a good tube preamp..am using an Adcom GFP565 now..but want tubes all the way. I had good luck with the guys at the Parts Connex..nice to deal with and fast delivery on tubes. Any idea why they closed their doors?? And where might you get your tubes?? Thanx for any info! Regards, Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  18. and chiming in from Yakutat, AK. Running 1982 KHorns( AK original crossover) powered by Assemblage SET tube amp (love it!) and Heresy speakers powered by Adcom GFA545II, both fed by Adcom GFP565 preamp , upline Adcom GCD750 or JVC QLY5F turntable, depending on source material. All this in a dedicated stereo room..all two channel, no surround, no phone, no video. Anyone visiting Yakutat is welcome to audition, email me or pm me...no fish guiding tho! That's up to you!! 19. I've been reading this post for several days now, and like most, (especially Mobile) can't tear myself away from it! And although, darn it, I fall into the category that "can" hear the difference ( or think I can, yes, I bought Audioquest, interconnects and speaker cables, but not without a moneyback guarantee!) I think, without sounding trite,it comes down to this. It's your money, and your opinion, and your ears ..so if you like it, go for it. If you don't, well..don't! It's like that channel on TV..don't complain about it, change channels..we could argue all day about how we perceive the content of the show being viewed..but we all have the same choice. Do it or don't. Leave it on..turn it off. There ain't a gun to the head. Speaking of which, Mobile, since you post some of the more clever replies on this board..don't do it. There's so many more subjects on which you can enlighten us! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  20. Keith you can't get a rise out of Heritage owners! They're no more "worn out" than we are! We'll welcome you into the "club" when you get a pair! Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  21. let's see..1972..10th grade..I modified my dad's old "hifi" -the great wood cabinet looking thing with the hidden turntable..built in speakers etc..added a couple of Akai reel to reel fold out speakers..the more the better right? After all, Led Zep and Deep purple needed more volume, and more volume needed more speaks! Right..ha..after that, 1973..I heard my first set of kHorns at Shimeks (Anchorage, AK) and swore I'd have a set sooner or later. 1974.out of the house/my new stereo..Bose 501's/Marantz intregrated amp (with bass treble and mid! controls) and Garrard turntable.. moved again (1977)..new system..JVC-QLY5F turntable (which I still use today!) Harmon Kardon amp, 2 sets Klipsch Hersy speakers, and a TEAC 4300SX reel to reel. Realized my dream when in 1982, bought a pair of K-Horns and since then (20 years already??!!) have only changed amps etc. Speakers are for life! Current system (music only) Adcom GCD-750 CD player Adcom GFP-565 pre amp (best they've built IMHO) Adcom GFA-545 (driving pair Heresys for fill-in) Assemblage 8 watt tube amp (driving KHorns) Klipschorns..ahhhhhhh.... and the beloved JVC-QLY5F TT and it never sounded better..old horns/old tubes.. Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  22. I have to agree with all the tube amp owners..I've had KHorns for almost 20 years now, and have experimented with solid state amps, from Harmon Kardon to Krell to Accuphase..maybe I didn't buy the $5K plus models, but spent a lot of money experimenting! I am happy with Adcom equipment, using their GCD750 CD player, and their GFP565 preamp (which I highly recommend over the top of the line GFP750!) but I traded in all their poweramps, the GFA535, 545, and the 5802 , along with the above-mentioned amps, for a flea powered 8 watts a side Assemblage tube amp (SET300B) and it made all the difference in the world! All the ringing went away..and the harshness! This amp is a spinoff of Sonic Frontiers..well respected. As for the lack of bass..and yes, I suppose SS amps have more..I opted for a Bob Carver Sunfire sub..which took care of that problem, no sweat! Bottom line..as stated above..Klipsch/tubes..it doesn't get better than this!! Best Regards, Steve ------------------ Happiness is coming
  23. I put the attenuator between the preamp and amp, and as Ray stated..I got better low end, and no noise! I just had to adjust my Carver MKII sub, as I had it hooked to another preamp out on the Adcom unit. I'm happy now..I have some gain control! Thanx again to all who offered advice! Steve
  24. Thanx guys.. Ray, I'll try the unit between the amp and preamp..this crossed my mind, but didn't think that it would make a difference..appreciate the advice and explanation was not long winded..just easy to understand. Steve
  25. "Sleep to Dream" from Fiona Apple's first CD has absolutely the most bass I have heard..I have to kick the subwoof off when I play this! Fleetwood Mac's "I'm So Afraid" from "The Dance" has a lot of bass also! I run KHorns, an Adcom GCD750 CD player, Adcom GFP565 preamp, Assemblage SET tube amp, and a Carver MKII subwoofer. Steve
