  1. I cant see any defects in the wood - did you fix these up yourself - Nope I purchased them this way and then spent some time just wiping them off with warm damp cloth over and over. I would agree with waxed as I did take a lot of build up off the tops. I applied some spray can Pledge to them to continue the sheen look. There are a few marks and also the veneer has split at the top of one but not enough to even allow me to glue it. (2015 and I post a blurred pic, sorry was a quick shot)
  2. As mentioned above I always thought that the tops were like the sides with less of a shine to them. I do like how the tops have a lot more luster to them. Are all BB like this?
  3. Few pics of the new to me 1979 Klipsch La Scala speakers. Not minding the black finish at all, always thought it had less shine. Digging em more daily!
  4. Gonna keep an eye out for it and if found at a good price will grab it to try it. Thanks again
  5. Sticking with analog, no interest at the moment in DAC.
  6. Well the decision was made... I even tested out a few Jolida tube amps as well. Although they sounded nice I still went back to the solid state integrated. Proud owner of a brand new NAD C 356BEE. Going to read the manual and she how she works. Thanks again for all the advice, would not be where I am right now without it.
  7. I am not a NAD "fanboy", okay maybe I am but their integrated amps(and receivers, pre/pros, amps) sound wonderful with Heritage as well as Reference. Bill Too funny man... anyway that is why I am going to audition one tomorrow. Will report back. I wont be able to listen to them on La Scala's but will ask them to play on a very efficient speaker. I am going to this place http://www.targethifi.com/ I bought a turntable a few years ago from them and they deal with NAD, he also said he has some other suggestions. Ears wide open and mind! Thanks again. Greg
  8. I'm not trying to get caught up in the higher watts game, I am looking for a well suited Solid State receiver, amp, separate units, integrated amp that will work and match up with the LaScala's characteristics. A kinda of best matched scenario for sound and only sound. I can have it loud and unbearable but I would like it loud and fantastic sounding and soft and fantastic sounding! I have all the power I need in the Kenwood amp and my Sony, on top of that I also have a 200 watt/Ch amp to hook to them if I wanted to. Most people are telling me that if I want the best sound I need to go tubes, while that may be true I want simplicity and ease and stay with in my comfort zone of Solid State gear. I will check into the Yamaha stuff that was mentioned and I do honestly appreciate the feedback and advice that you are all giving to the new guy on the block. Awesome to see, thanks, Greg.
  9. Still looking around at the suggestions everyone has made. Much appreciated. I don't need another AVR but thanks anyway. Only looking for 2 channel. Have a line on the NAD 356BEE going to listen tomorrow, found a Pioneer 1080 for 600 us and a Harman Kardon 730 that I mentioned before. No rush as my 2002 Kenwood 6070 THX AVR works not too shabby for what it is.
  10. The same direction meaning in or out. It is a push pull design. In phase the sub is pushing the speaker out with the rest of your speakers. If out of phase with the other speakers then the sub would pull back the speaker when all other speakers woofers are pushing forward. Same as if you had two woofers in one enclosure and you hooked one in phase and one out of phase, when one fired forward the other would pull back and you would not have much bass. Hope that helps and I explained it correctly. If not someone here will correct it!
  11. Just an online catalog and what your catalog is worth based on going prices.
  12. If you have read the reviews on the 730s on these boards and like what you read, what's a couple of hundred dollars. you can resell it quickly if you don't like the sound, check the sold prices on the auction site. just checked the sold prices, $200 is a fair price if in good working order and good cosmetic condition. If they re-capped it great! The reviews on the site and else where are what has me interested and you are 100% correct about the $200.00. Maybe I am being too cautious on older gear. Will inquire about this one, thanks. Also thanks for the tip on searching sold prices.
  13. Use them sometimes and worked out fine. Just like ebay or any other site, lots of people have the same thing for sale and hope for the best. I have never had an issue and the sellers that I purchased from were good. I really paid attention to the feedback and the condition columns when buying records. Good luck.
  14. Is the price inline with what you guys would expect from a Harman Kardon 730? Works out to be approx $220 US. Only concern is the statement I put in bold, or should I even be concerned about it? Thanks all. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1049467112 This unit has been professionally serviced with clean bill of health, sounding excellent*Select problematic capacitors on driver boards were replaced with top quality caps for long life of beautiful sound* Note: Sorry about my first post in this thread, my Sony AVR is a Sony STR-DA5300ES 7.1 not a 5400, I was thinking of the SACD player model # when posting. My my other AVR is a Kenwood VR-6070 6.1 THX Select.
  15. Thanks for the many suggestions and comments. Will try what I have and will start looking for some of the gear that was mentioned.
  16. Thanks for the assistance, picking them up on Friday! Will clean them up and post some pics and thought later. Thanks again all.
  17. I am looking for a good 2 channel amp/receiver to match with a pair of La Scalas for music use only. I have IMO two decent AVR's, a Sony 5400ES and a Kenwood THX receiver. I could try the Kenwood with the LA Scalas but again it is an avr and I am only wanting to run 2 channels. Phono and SACD will be my only function from the receiver unless it has a day built in or XM radio. I have a Bellari 130 so I can use that or the phono on the receiver which ever sounds best. I do not want to venture into tubes right now, I just want to stay solid state. What would be some of your suggestions? I prefer new or current but can look into vintage. Is there a go to receiver brand or model that works well with the heritage line or specifically La Scala's? I'm just looking for ideas and do know that people's opinions and hearing is different. Thanks for reading.
  18. I still have but do not use anymore a Kenwood THX certified amp and I use to wonder what settings and if I should use THX or DD or DTS Master etc etc etc. I would adjust then readjust then set the Crossovers to 80 and then small or large.. hell I was all over the board with settings and mics and sound meters. I never did get use to the THX sound modes as I found them to be a bit thin so I as others have mentioned above would turn off the THX and listen to the DD or DTS-ex etc that the amp had. In my case it was just a matter of selecting or de-selecting the THX button and then if I wanted the THX formats I would cycle through them. As soon as I de-selected the THX button it would cut off all THX functions. Here is some theory about THX modes taken from Sound and Vision mag http://www.soundandvision.com/content/difference-between-dolby-digital-and-thx THX modes do not encode or decode audio—instead, they process the sound after it has been decoded by the Dolby Digital, DTS, or any other codec. For example, THX Surround EX in the Integra DTR-7.9 applies Re-Equalization (Re-EQ), Timbre Matching, and Adaptive Decorrelation to the audio decoded by Dolby Digital EX. So you don't choose one or the other—instead, you choose whether or not to apply THX post-processing to the decoded audio. In your case, if you enable THX Surround EX, the AVR applies THX post-processing to the Dolby Digital EX soundtrack; if you choose Dolby Digital EX, the THX post-processing is not applied to the audio. According to THX, "THX Listening Modes can be used in conjunction with a variety of audio encodings (Dolby Digital, DTS, etc). For instance, THX Cinema Mode does not override material that was encoded with Dolby Digital. However, it does add some settings that help adapt the audio for the home environment. "Setting your speakers to 'Small (80Hz)' insures that they are passing off the appropriate amount of bass to the subwoofer. If you are not able to do that, for whatever reason, with one or more of your speakers, that's okay. It just means you'll hear a little less bass out of the subwoofer." You won't notice this much at all, since your surrounds go down to almost 80Hz. You fear that I'll tell you set your AVR to whatever sounds good to you, and I'm afraid I must do just that. If you like the brightness of unprocessed Dolby Digital and the punch of THX Surround EX processing but the highs sound muddled, enable THX Surround EX and turn off Re-EQ.
  19. Thanks for the feedback and opinions really nice info and much appreciated. I had a pair of LaScala's back in 84 so I am familiar with the sound but I am not technical with electrics and stuff. Thanks again for the info. And as mentioned I do love the sound of the Heritage series from the 80's, no other sound like it anywhere!
  20. Yes I think it could be glued and it is horizontal with all wood is intact. Thanks.
  21. Thinking of purchasing a pr of 1979 La Scalas with sequential serial numbers. Was told they had original parts. Finished in black with a small flaw that looks like the veneer on either side where it butts up against the top has separated approximately 3 inches on one speaker. If it was on the bottom I would have said it looked water damage. Looks purely cosmetic. With original parts how can I tell if electrical parts require replaced when listening to them or is it that they will work and then if pushed to much they will get fatigued and possibly quit. I'm new at auditioning 30 year old speakers so what should I be listening for other than good sound. How do you know when your speakers need new caps or other parts replaced or refreshed if the speaker works? I'm just hesitant because of the age and I am not handy with electronics. Price is approximately $875.00 US. Thanks for reading, hope I can contribute in the future.
