Not to throw cold water on your plans, but just be aware that forte and chorus ii are going to need room for the passive to breathe so if your Lascala were taking up to much space I’m not sure that will improve with one of these two sitting further out in the floor. I own Chorus ii and love them, but you might need stick with Chorus I. Just something to think about. And yea, $1800 is too much!

Christmas week bump.
Moved the 45 to my garage to try out on my modified Cornwalls, totally shocked by the sweetness and volume that this combo is producing in a large oversized 2 bay garage with high ceilings. The Cornwall will probably always be kept in my garage, but this is too nice of an amp to be kept for garage duty.

You probably want a 45 set amp…I just might know where one is. 😆
Honestly, I think you’ll enjoy the sound of just about any quality tube amp either modern or restored vintage. Imho pp el84 is a great place to start.

Oliver Sayes 45 amp in walnut base. Only had a short time, great with Lascala, Khorn Altec and or bi-amping . I’m in Chattanooga Tn and I’m willing to meet someone in any of the 4 major cities within 2 hours from me. It can be demoed here and sounds incredible with a pair of zu speakers I have. I have the packaging that Oliver shipped it to me in. This is designed to use a preamp but my buddy recently tried it on his Altec 605 without a pre and say that it was the best amp he’s ever tried including his 2a3 monoblocks. I also used it driven by a node and got sufficient volume for the zu in my large open living space.
This isn’t Oliver’s basic build it’s all premium parts. Below is the description from Oliver.
The details, it’s a single ended 45 amplifier with 6n7 driver and 80 rectifier with ~1.7v input sensitivity for ~1.5 watt output. Parts are finemet core output/choke transformer, film power supply/cathode bypass caps, copper foil/paper/oil coupling capactors, carbon composite resistors, Teflon sockets,$1900

I have a Scott 299b partially restored, got it out the other day thinking I might list it for sale. After a warmup from sitting unused for about 2 years I remembered why I love el84 amps. I don’t have an opinion on the fisher as I’ve never owned one and have only heard them a few times. As others have said you really can’t go wrong with either of they’ve been properly serviced or better yet restored. Can you take your speakers and go have a listen to them both?

Wow, that’s terribly discouraging. Seems all the guys at the haven that have had amps built by him were very happy.

Wow! Really? He’s built an amp for me that I’ll be taking delivery on in the next few weeks. I’ve talked with him several times and although he can be slow to respond sometimes he’s been very nice and helpful in helping me decide which direction to go.

Anybody using a 45 tube amp to drive chorus ii or the likes? I know people have used them on Lascala, Khorn and horn loaded that are more efficient, but I’m not sure about more “traditional” speakers. Concerned that the flea wattage will not be sufficient enough and I don’t want to deal with bi-amp and active crossovers.

Chorus ii with some slight mods and running off tubes. I’d say if I was going to buy new it’d be forte iv for footprint size or Cornwall iv if the footprint could be stretched.

Does anybody know if Dave’s fastlane 400 horns would fit in Cornwall cabinets?
Obviously I’d have to cut the motorboards, wondering about the depth, height and width.

Does the room have any acoustic treatment? One of the best investments you can make. This may not be your current issue, but you’ll never hear your speakers properly without wall treatments. Easy experiment is hanging moving blankets(harbor freight) on the walls and especially over that bay window.

Just wanted to chime back in to say I installed the k55v soldered lug and “301?” Horn in my chorus ii a while back. Did an a/b first and wasn’t sure I was going to like it. The midrange was definitely less in your face and I thought a bit too laid back, but once I installed both and listened for a while I was really happy with the results. It is a little more laid back, but seems to blend really nice and I don’t notice anything shouting or shrillness ad nothing stands out or draws your attention. I actually ended up toeing them in a little more and they sound wonderful. I haven’t run rew so all I’m describing is my personal experience. Would love to update the diaphragms in the k55v or try the a55g but right now I’m happy with the results.

K-61-k horn to k-55-v adapter

Whoa! I had to read back thru to remember what I was doing at this point in history. So I don’t remember giving the k55v on adapters enough listening time to give a review. What I ended up with is a pair of (I think) k-301 horns which are pretty much identical to k-61 horns except they are threaded and the k55v mounts right up. I really like them in this setup and believe that there was a definite improvement. I would think something is wrong with your k55 if they sound bad, possibly diaphragms, but idk, I think Crites talked about this topic some on his website. I’m not sure if you want to throw parts around, but I’d say leave your quartets as they are since you’re happy with them. Investigate the k55 to see what might be wrong with them. Have you heard other Heresy you liked? Maybe that sound isn’t for you? Also, what are you driving them with?
