  1. the photo is its own thread? hmmmm....are you going to crash this again? where is that photo thread? c7s ok...I get it now. its over in "technical".......
  2. Excellent! Just the idea of going DIY was a good insight. C&S
  3. I like that the cool gizmos are indeed working radios. I only wish they could tune in "Mr. Keen Tracer of Lost Persons" http://www.otrcat.com/keen-tracer-lost-persons-p-1629.html c7s
  4. First you had your all important radio and some were quite handsome from the artistic or decorator standpoint. Now you can have some art or decorator item which incidentally and rather unimportantly is also a radio. Radio, either a creator or a destroyer of countries. What a difference an era makes. c7s
  5. Are we going to ever know what was said in the other thread of the same name? Is there any way to retreive it or will it require a NOS E50 motor? c7
  6. I think some of those "popular" illustrations that use an illusion which flips from the young woman at the vanity to the skull was a reminder of the inanity of vanity in light of our inescapable mortality. Maybe though it was just another form or variation on the old seduction ploy, we could die at any time so sleep with me now kind of thing. The fear of death has a lot to do with the fact that we mostly operate in denial of this terribly inconvenient fact of life. The fear is also a fear of realizing our denial, as in, oops I forgot to reserve a cemetary plot.... putting off today....etc. The skull has often been a flag waved to prove or advertise a lack of these fears.... eg. so don't mess with me.... thus the violence connection. c7s
  7. All those skulls. Always with the skulls. You would think that these people who are always obsessing over skulls would conclude from the "death grooms life idea" compassion, but no, they only conclude dissipation, excess, and violence. I'm soooo scared.....! I better go out and get a death fixated tatoo. ok, I am just trying to drum something up....... c7s
  8. Seriously, I did learn a few things at the get-together. 1. possibly to utilize my recently retired iMac as a bank for music, ala the "server" concept, for the studio on the hill where I don't have access to all my CDs. a friend and fellow musicologist offered to fill a hard-drive with an accumlative compilation of nearly the entire history of latin music. Unbelievable how quick he can find something compared to my getting lost in the stacks looking for the misplaced piece. I do still also enjoy the library work, gives me something to do while listening to a whole album in order to locate some idea I vaguely remember from one of the tracks, eg. more the musicological mode than simply sitting in the sweet spot for pure enjoyment. A question might be something like: what is the earliest recording of the typical piano quajeo in a Cuban recording...etc. not exactly something you do by googling.... At least not until we ourselves post the answer. BTW, if you have any interest in this area of musicology, check out my friends amazing online and ongoing "book": http://www.timba.com/artists/bookpre/index.asp 2. possible usefulness and economy of LaScalas, folded horn bass, the one thing I don't have here with all my BRcabs including Cornwalls, is the horn loaded bass, which I somtimes miss listening to small group jazz.... eg. at the meeting, we directly compared within a matter of minutes, Bob's great "cornscalas" and Josh's Belles, in the middle of some Blue Note Dexter from Josh's collection. I could hear exactly the difference the horn loaded bass made, a subtle quality I simply do not get with any of my wonderful umpteen Bass Reflex designs around here. Sometimes that focused bass is a nice touch, one of the spectrum areas PWK's contribution is unquestionably dramatic. (oth, seems like so many conclude wanting to upgrade/modify those mid range horns though.....) c7s
  9. Little lord Fontley Roy, you need to jimmy that trac horn, I really don't care, but it is as sideways as a Pinot. -Ceeze & Deshorn I am starting to feel like Clo with the endless handle variations.....next thing I will have the ghost of Jacques after me......
  10. Ah .... so it is fini who is the illegal character..... Is there a work-around for this In-Font Terrible? LJß
  11. Hi guys, I apologize for being an illegal character in the path and an unhandled exception. It won't happen again, I promise. But please let me at least read the thread to see what you are saying behind my back, lol. Clipped & Shorn This thread has been clipped and shorn from my view for some reason. What's going on? 12. I have had pretty good luck with tri-amping (and bi-amping) with home built speaker systems, both with SS or tubes on the bottom. Currently my system is all tubes with SET in the mid-range (300B). The system is designed to maximize tweaking potentials to adjust for an extremely wide variety of vinyl recordings. I have also introduced an Apex 204 aural exciter into the mix along with the three-way electronic crossover. Not sure this all strictly qualifies as "audiophile", but I am and have been quite happy with the results for a few years now. This gives me the maximum tweaking without the usual "tone" controls. 13. So you can only spare 2 screws if you plan to restore 15 more TTs. (I remembered this from a jr. high school math test.) c&s
  14. Is a distinction being made here between NOS WE (original) and the newly manufactured WE tubes? c&s
  15. Unfortunately the USPS does not (yet) provide a good Priority box for 12" LPs. Good sellers use a cardboard box made for this purpose, they will also include an extra sheet or two of carboard and even some bubblewrap. Personally I recycle the boxes I have already received by turning them inside out. One thing not to do is use one of the USPS Priority boxes without opening them up, eg. using them flat. This does not provide the necessary protection. Other than these special type boxes I have yet to see anything else the works to my satisfaction. Here is what they look like, and hopefully you find a source that sells small lots. http://www.packagingsupplies.com/Record_Album_LP_Shipping_Boxes.html Almost forgot, always check on Ebay, for example: # 339002707809 Ouch, what ridiculous shipping charge. No wonder I have only used recycled boxes. Might be cheaper to buy a record just for the good box it comes in. C&S
  16. Seti, I googled a bit, it turns out that Garrard TT restored and hot rodded (Shindo?) with the right arm and plinth etc. can be around $20K. I think that is the find worth learning to fix. Apparently that very transport mechanism that you acquired is highly prized. Like fini said, there are guidelines on the web for turning this thrift store find into a total gem for playing some music! Whatever you need to do to it is probably well worth the effort and learning curve. Just my 2 cents. http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/garrard/301.html C&S
  17. I will have to check out that novel, sounds interesting. Its not so much that I want dreams to come true, I just want the stuff to be in my house when I wake up. Sometimes I have even dreamed that I pulled this off and still the stuff was not in my real house when I really woke up, and I have found some really cool stuff. It has been very disappointing to say the least. I think I am close though. C&S
  18. Great tale. You can't make up stuff like that. Sometimes I dream of such finds, but in the dream I cannot quite figure out how to make sure the "stuff" is real and physical when I wake up. I am still working on this. One of the great challenges in modern day physics, and only a few years ago considered merely "science fiction". Also I just purchased a new device, similar to a metal detector, for finding old audio gear within a 100 mile radius. The one for 500 miles is way too expensive, and what's the point really, fini lives only a few miles from me. C&S
  19. Fair dealers pay less than 50% of what they think they might be able to sell stuff for. Be generous but not foolish. Lot's of goodies there! I like the part about using the WE 300B to save the EH. C&S
  20. Most of what I know and what I use in my audio systems has had something to do with Mark, his knowledge, and generosity. 1. speaker system design and multi-amp concept. 2. Paragon preamp (now sold) 3. custom Dynaco-70 (still in use) 4. Blueberry X +Cream 5. Merlin 6. P-Cat (prototype) 6L6/KT66 7. open baffle explorations 8. coaching and consulting on several amp upgrades and scratch building. Thanks buddy Zeno
  21. I suspect that merely changing the rectifier tube to get more power may be an oversimplification of the situation. The experts will chime in momentarily I am sure. It is a cute little amp and those output tubes can sound very good indeed. Some minor upgrading and or replacing of caps if needed and I am sure you will get mucho enjoyment from this little rig. This amp may perhaps be single-ended which would also be kind of cool. Have you tried the tuner-in instead of the phono-in for your CD player, that should sound better I would think? Simple enough rig that you could possibly learn to make some little upgrades yourself. I only see three maybe four larger caps in the whole thing and a few small ones around the switches. One is a multi cap, that is the aluminum cylinder mounted on top of the chassis along with the tubes. That would be for the power supply for sure. The other aluminum looking cap under the chassis may also be power supply. There are those on this forum who could tell you a lot more just from those pictures. Do you have a tuner or a phono? What does it sound like at this point? Do you know if it was already worked on? Maybe it doesn't need anything yet. Just use it as is until you need or want to do something with it. Didn't the ad for this say it sounded great? c&s
  22. Well he did confess to owning a cheap car as the trade off. and the platter ring was a diy. I like these guys, they really love their music. I learned some possibly important things: The sound quality could be: 50% clear electriciy 20% rack 25% speaker cables (also nice if you can see your own reflection mirrored on your tubes). 3% motor being absolutely isolated from table, the further away the better. 1% stylus/cartridge perpendicular to grooves at all time. eg. same angle. The rest are some small factors we already know about. (I'm just having fun here.....I'll bet the sound is out of this world....) C&S
  23. Very nicely done film, very interesting. I like the portraits reflected on the tubes and other nice shots. I like the guy with the $250++K system. I kept thinking, one speck of dust on an LP, you might as well have a $20K system with normal electricity and rack. So is this stuff the real "high end" or are these guys putting together sensible buget versions of the real "high end" by making their own rims for LPs etc. and doing their own mods ? Is there a club somewhere featuring guys with the million dollar and above systems? The Athen's guys somehow seemed practical to me, very sensible systems for music lovers, its just that, as we all know, it ends up costing more than we think or like to admit. Well maybe 48 different amps in a year was a bit over the top. C&S
