  1. Pat, Heh, I don't recall "defending" the EICO in a Scott vs. Eico debate. I've never heard a Scott so it would be ridiculous for me to take that kind of stand. You may have interpreted my razzing of NOS440 (Craig) a little bit as he is a well known Scott aficionado. He made a valiant attempt at restoring a basket case EICO to hear the two units side-by-side for himself. It was a lost cause though as the original builder had their own ideas of how to wire one. It's think it's great that a Scotts are as good as the Eico. Since the EICOs are so hard to find in great shape, perhaps other BB members will just get Scotts instead. - tb
  2. Hey Pat, Glad your alive and kicking. Just so everyone knows, Pat is the fine gentleman that sold me his EICO HF-81. He did the restoration on the unit and did a fantastic job of it too. Here is my web page for my EICO, inspired by Mobile Homeless and how blown away I was with the sound. Photos taken before the output tube coupling caps were replaced with Auricaps. http://home.attbi.com/~tbabb/eico.html Pat I didn't realize you were working out of the country. I was beginning to wonder what happened to you? Have you found any good stashes of Telefunkens over there? Good luck with your LaScalas... You still have your HE speakers? - tb ------------------ Two Channel Source: Rega Planet EICO HF-81 Vintage Integrated AES -> Wright 2A3 SET Speaker(s) - Klipsch RB-5 II Klipsch Kg4s Bedroom Setup : Tube Headphone AMP - Antique Sound Labs MG Head OTL ( 5751 -> EL-84 ) HeadPhones - Sennheiser HD-600 Home Theater Toshiba 57HX81 Yamaha 5790 Panasonic RP-91 DVD Toshiba DST-3000 Klipsch Kg4 Fronts/Klipsch Klisch Academy Center/Klipsch Klipsch kg2 Rears f> c> s>
  3. Wow, what a surprise. Would that be Pat Landrum from San Antonio? Welcome to the Klispch BB Pat ! - Tim Babb
  4. Worth really adds up to suppy and demand and what people are willing to pay for it. While the final sound quality output may not warrant those hefty prices, getting a clean and workable unit might just be the reason? NOS440 - It's no surprise that you would not pay what others would for the EICO and why would you, your perfectly happy with the Scotts. You know them inside and out and know exactly what it takes to take one from junk status to magical deang - I'd have to agree with you. While $600 is peanuts compared with some current system, it seems a lot for a 1959 vintage piece. I can understand an unbuilt one going for top dollar, I myself would not pay that kind of money if it still needed work after the fact. I did compare my Eico to a couple other current intergrated amps in and out of my price range, and I liked the EICO the best. Manley Stingray and Jolida 302b are what I auditioned. One of these days I'd like to get my hands on a primo Scott 299 and have a good listen to it. Craig - I'm actually surprised that you would even rate the EICO at $500, I guess your value of the EICO is going up then? - tb
  5. Tom - At $600 + a pop for a good one, that's pretty good motivation. Do I ever feel lucky I got mine when I did. Mine was a steal at $350. Hopefully some BB member will get it. - tb ------------------ Two Channel System(s) CD Player - Original Rega Planet EICO HF-81 Speaker(s) - Klipsch RB-5 II Kg4s Tube Headphone AMP - ASL MG Head OTL ( 5751 -> EL-84 ) HeadPhones - Sennheiser HD-600 & Sennheiser HD-580 Home Theater Toshiba 57HX81, Yamaha 5790 Panasonic RP-91 DVD Toshiba DST-3000 Klipsch kg4 Fronts/Klipsch Academy Center/Klipsch kg2 Rears f> c> s>
  6. Stop it people your all making me thristy.. - tb
  7. db - Thanks for the feedback. I think I will be happy wth any of the AES line, I might just have to try several of them. The Wrights will be keepers, as is my Rega. It might be doing the edster pre-amp game until I find out what I like. The AES AE-3 DJH looks interesting. I like the idea of tube rectification, which I belive the AE-1 does not have? It would make an interesting comparision. Edster - Thanks for the post, sorry to hear about your DSL troubles. I've been there. Mobile - Howss Gustav treating you?
  8. Mobile - I am interested in Eds opinion on how it compares with the AE-3 DJH. I've read some postings on AA with some comparisions and comments on the sound differences. If what I read is correct, the AE-1 should be better. I didn't think of putting different tubes in the Wright just yet. I'm sure you know what your talking about so I'll make a note to get those soon. LOL - I'm sure the Wrights will sound GREAT with K-Horns. One thing at a time. I don't have that kind of room anyway. I'm using kg4s and RB 5IIs now as they are very neighbor friendly and I listen mostly nearfield. Keeping my eyes open for a decent pair of Cornwalls within driving distance. Hum Mod? I think I recall reading something about a very slight hum on the Wrights, but didn't know if i read that correctly. Care to eleborate? - tb
  9. Well, It looks like I'm going to purchase Eds AES preamp to go along with the Wright 2A3s. Well at least as long as he doesn't change his mind to sell it after he listens to it... ;-) I really didn't know about the AES / Cary relationship, so I'm glad you mentioned it Ed. Seems to be yet another great bargain in the audio world. Chris, sorry to have just squeaked past you. I wasn't sure that any other BB members would be bidding. At least you will be doing real important things with your money, the money I have saved for the new patio just bought that 2A3! Oh well, I guess I can figure out something to tell the wife. I thought for a few hours I would not be bidding at all, Just 4 hours before the bidding was to end, my power went OFF. Internet went down and stayed down. I thought just my luck. Internet came on 3 1/2 hours later just before the auction ended. I got lucky no doubt. Mobile - Thanks for your input. One question regarding the AES AE1 pre... Is the Cary SLP98 based on it, or the other way around? I've heard it both ways, so I'm confused. - tb
  10. Mike Since I am in the market it might be worth calling him to chat, but at this point I don't like to bother people unless I know I can afford to purchase their product. I have no clue what he charges for those. BTW: I did get a chance to hear his 45 amp at the Chicago hornfest this summer. Unfortunately the poor room setup, and strange mixture of equipment made it impossible for me to determine what that amps potential was. - tb
  11. kjohnsonhp Without getting into specifics I would suggest you find a reputable tube amp dealer in your area and arrange a home trial with a tube amp and try it with your cornwalls. I started with a high end AV receiver too, but now I keep my 2 channel setup and home theater setup SEPARATE. Replacing my Nakamichi AV receiver with a low cost integrated tube made a WORLD of difference with my Klipsch. I even tried some high quality Solid State amplification, but it still sounded "harsh" and tiresome to listen to. Tubes made the music WARM and pleasant to listen to. After I heard the difference it was a no brainier to switch. Try it and listen for yourself. - tb
  12. Jazman, How do you like your SLP-90? Any photos? I forgot what you are driving with it? Edster - I was amazed with rolling tubes with my Eico, and how NOS tubes made a huge diffrence in the sound and really opened up the sound. I belive much more now than before what magic a pre-amp can do. - tb
  13. Very true...good idea. Craig - Next time just tell ME ok? ;-) - Your good bud Tim
  14. Mobile, Where can I find more info on the Jeff Korneff 76 Preamp? Does he maintain a web site? What's the retail price of that unit ? Edster - Thanks for the info. I guess you feel the pre-amp is the weak link in your system? I've read so much good stuff about the moondogs and wright sound 2A3s I am leaning in that direction as funds allow. I don't want to end up with a pre-amp that won't do the 2A3s justice. The Syrah is way beyond my budget so I hope I can find a pre-amp that works well with either the moondogs or the Wright Sound setup. Mobile, Jazman - the WLA-20 makes a whole lot of sense if I end up with a Wright Sound. The price is also reasonable considering the cost of the Carys. I hope Jobman posts a review! - tb
  15. Mobile, Did you ever get a chance to hear this setup? WPL20 Phono/Line Preamplifier I thought you mentioned in some Klipsch threads a while back that you were looking at one of these yourself ? Edster, Did you consider this one as an option before deciding on the Syrah? Why or why not? - tb This message has been edited by tbabb on 09-03-2002 at 08:05 AM
  16. Craig! if your not going to bid on them yourself please let us know next time... I would of went for those, driving distance for me too. double doh. - T
  17. Edster, please email info on the unit. I am interested. I know nothing about that unit. Does it have a phono section? TIA - Tim
  18. Someone better grab this quick! $800 Cornwall I with Alnico and Vertical Horns! Local pickup in Oregon http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.pl?spkrfull&1036200370&2&3&4&
  19. Thanks mobile, that was just the info I needed. I had been following the info posted here, and on AA. I had been trying to piece it together. The website for Cary has little info on older units, which makes it hard to determine which models had phono sections and tube rectification. I'll take a look at those othe pre-amps in the meantime. I have not run my phono section on my Eico yet. Pat Landrum hinted me it was very good. - tb
  20. Crap! $%#%^^& I guess it pays to sift through the ADs! - TB
  21. I'm looking to get tube pre-amp to run as preamp into my Eico HF-81 and then eventually run the pre-amp with separate SET mono-blocks. Probably a 2A3 design. I like the design and build of the Cary line. Can anyone suggest used models that would be worth using, and would have a line and phono section that could surpass the Eico HF-81? Would a SLP-50 be worthwhile? Are there certain models that should be avoided? My budget will about $1000. My local dealer has a demo SLP-88 for $1400, but I know little about it. My timeframe is between now and 1 month. Suggestions please., Cary or otherwise... 22. Happy Birthday Tom! ah, your just a young pup. When you get to be my age, you will really start to feel old... I'm 38... ;-)
  23. Actually that rule should only apply if you indend to bid on the item yourself.....otherwise I feel it's just Klipsch - o - philes helping out other Klipsch people. Mobile, you have been know to post stuff, a many of a time... NOS440 maybe you can grab this one. At least you will know for sure it was not messed up before ... Gosh, that's a rare find. Like a time capsule, I never thought I would see a unbuilt one. Sure is tempting, but alas I have to save for my Turntable, Cary Pre-amp, and 2A3 amp... God, will this quest never end... - tb
  24. I can highly reccomend Sennheisers. Splurge for at least the 580s and if you can manage it, the HD-600s. You won't regret it. I have both models and use them along with a ASL MG-Head tube headphone amp. Works well with computer and also a headphone surround sound amp which I use watching flicks when the family is asleep. Surround sound with headphones and the latest games can really freak you out sometimes as you find yourself turning around to see if someone is really there! Maybe mobile can chime in as I shipped him my phones and headphone amp setup for a few weeks to evaluate. For more info that anyone can possible digest on headphones head over to www.Head-fi.org or www.headwize.com Lots and lots of good info there. - tb ------------------ Two Channel System(s) Phono - None: Looking CD Player - Original Rega Planet EICO HF-81 Speaker(s) - Klipsch 1.2s, Kg4s Looking for nice Cornwall or Chorus II Tube Headphone AMP - ASL MG Head OTL ( 5751 -> EL-84 ) HeadPhones - Sennheiser HD-600 & Sennheiser HD-580 Home Theater Toshiba 57HX81, Yamaha 5790 Panasonic RP-91 DVD Toshiba DST-3000 Klipsch kg4 Fronts/Klipsch Academy Center/Klipsch kg2 Rears f> c> s>
  25. I've seen this suggested on Vinyl AA forums. http://www.garage-a-records.com/spin.html It's low cost, which is nice, but I havn't tried it myself. Anyone hear anything good or bad about it? - tb
