  1. If interested, please see thread in 2-channel audio. Thanks! Best in horns, triceratops
  2. Tom- This will crack you up. I just got back home from work-related travel and checked the serial numbers on my 1960 Khorns. They are very close to yours--my cabinets are 1568 and 1569, yours are 1505 and 1517. They are probably just a few months apart. The manufacture dates on my wooden mid horns are May 24, 1960 and June 1, 1960. Cool huh? Bring yours over and we'll have a sibling reunion--it would just be a couple thousand miles of driving... The closest thing to the Overpass tavern is the Overtime tavern, but it's on Bertelson not Highway 99. I guess the Overpass must be history... Best in horns, triceratops Hey m00n, Thanks for checking in. Did you and Audible Nectar ever get together when he visited this summer? I'd love to check out your HT sometime. Best, T
  3. If interested, please see thread in 2-channel audio. Thanks! Best in horns, triceratops
  4. Bkrop- Thanks for the suggestion, but I think m00n tried the Belle Klipsch route and decided it wasn't his cup of tea. I'm hoping there are some other members in the great Northwest who would appreciate these... Best in horns, triceratops
  5. Thanks, Paul! When I get everything set up on the 1960 Khorns, I hope you will come over and check them out. It will still be a few more months. My current plan is to go with a pair of Welborne DRDs w/ 300B tubes. I am still trying to scrape together the bucks for that. I went to the Valve State of the Art Conference (VSAC) in Silverdale, Washington last month and it was great. Horns all over the place (Edgar and Orvis, I think) all driven by some of the coolest tube gear on the planet. You may want to check it out next year. How are the Cornies working out for you? Did you redo the grilles? Best in horns, Triceratops
  6. Hey Tom, Thanks for the humorous recollections! Up and back from Medford to Portland in a day is definitely some serious mileage--especially in the era before Escort radar detectors and cruise control! I haven't seen the Overpass tavern on 99, but there are a lot of bars on that stretch so it might be operating under a different name. Not sure about the plywood company either, but I'll look both up in the phone book when I get back home tomorrow and see if anything is listed... I think our khorns are close to the same age--I'll check my serial numbers when I get home. Best in horns, triceratops
  7. Some of you may recall that I bought a pair of 1960 Klipschorns a few months back. I charged them on a zero-interest credit card to stall coming up with the cash, but now I've got to pay up so I have to sell my 1977 Belles (among other things). The Belles are oiled walnut with black grilles, sequential numbers, all original drivers, Alnico tweeters and squawkers. Condition is excellent, but there are a few chips on the edge veneers that I intended to fix but haven't gotten to yet. They look quite presentable as they are. They are located in Eugene, Oregon within striking distance of Medford and Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. Maybe even the Bay area if you are as dedicated as Tom! I could also work with forum members to ship them via Forward Air, but they would have to be professionally crated for that. I'm thinking the price for the speakers would be about $1600 plus shipping. If two forum members want to split the pair for center channels, I can work with that. I have sold two pairs of Cornwalls and a pair of Heresy's to Forum members, who could probably vouch for my ethics in transactions like this. Let me know if any of you are interested. For those of you that are looking for other stuff, I've got a Studer Revox B226 signature CD player on Ebay at this time--an oldie but goodie. Best in horns, triceratops
  8. Hey Jim, Dean, and khorn58, Thanks for your respective insights and encouragement. I bought the Threshold preamp Sunday and hooked it up for a test run Monday night. It works and sounds great! Now I need to upgrade everything else... It was a really cool deal, the seller had the manual and promo literature but no box. He didn't have it hooked up but said I could return it if I wasn't happy with the performance. The thing is in pristine shape, not a scratch! It is a Threshold FET1 Series II, which (believe it or not) retailed for $2200 in the mid-eighties. The seller had some other pretty cool stuff for sale, so I just bought everything. It was all nice stuff and the prices were real cheap, so I figured I could always get my money back. I also bought a Nakamichi RX-505 cassette deck, a Revox B-226 Signature CD player with remote, and a pair of ADS M-12 speakers. I think I'll definitely keep the Nak and the Threshold preamp. We'll see about the other stuff. Thanks to all. Best in horns, triceratops
  9. Thanks, Jim That's what I was thinking too. My usual strategy is if I come across an interesting piece of equipment at a good price I'll buy it and try it. To appreciate the pros and cons of a piece of gear it helps me to actually listen to it in my home over a few months or so... Best in horns, triceratops
  10. I realize this is not the most desirable piece of equipment, but I have an opportunity to buy a mid-1980's Threshold FET-1 preamp very inexpensively. Since I don't have a discrete preamp (all my amps are low budget integrateds) I thought it might be worthwhile to have this thing kicking around--just in case I come up with a power amp one of these days and want to run a turntable through it. Does anyone have expeience with thee units? I think they were well thought of in their day even thought that was a while ago. My speakers are 1960 Klipschorns, 1977 Belles, and 1986 KG-4s. I listen primarily to jazz and eclectic world music with a Sony midline ES CD player and an old B&O turntable. Lots of weak links in the chain... I would appreciate any observations, opinions, etc. Best in horns, triceratops
  11. Gary, I watched the end of this auction--the misspelling of Belle probably cut way down on the activity. I thought moondog761 was going to get a great deal, but the auction went to a low activity bidder with some negatives. I wonder if the transaction will ever really happen. Did you ever contact the seller? Any of the bidders Forum folks? Best in horns, triceratops
  12. OOPs! Disregard please--you said K-55's not K-77's! Sorry! Best, triceratops
  13. Are you looking for K-77s with Alnico magnets or ceramic? Best, Triceratops
  14. I hauled home the 1960 khorns I bought last week and discovered one of the tweeters is blown. They are K-77 Alnico of course, the blown one is serialized 1286. My question is this: the woofers are EV 15 WK Alnicos and the crossovers are K 500/5000 (dated 1960) and the terminals for the amp connection are labelled 16 ohm. Does this mean the tweeters might be 16 ohm instead of 8 ohm? And since they are so old do they use a different diaphram than the later ceramic tweeters? Or a different impedence diaphram? Any advice appreciated. I can take pix of the stuff if that helps but don't know how to post them. Best in Horns, triceratops
  15. Lynnm-- Sounds like good advice to me! I'll give it a try! Best, triceratops
  16. paulparrot, JCTurboT, Edster, lynnm- Thanks for the advice! I figured it is pretty straightforward, but I want to make sure I have everything I need when I go to pick them up! Best in Horns, triceratops
  17. Jim- For starters I'll be selling my '77 Belles. I have one local Forum member who contacted me first, so he will probably see them tomorrow. Then I have to get info to Frzninvt who asked for info second. I'll get the details to you third if you are curious about them. If none of those result in a sale I'll post all the details on the Forum for anyone else that might be interested. There may be two other Klipsch items that go up for sale, but I have to follow up with two Forum people that I promised first shot, before I open it up on those items. I'll keep you posted. Best, triceratops
  18. Hey Lynn- That is really great. I heard Khorns for the first time in about 1973 and have lusted for them a long time. I finally got a pair of 1981 Klipschorns in early 2000, but sold them a year later when we moved to smaller quarters. Have since regretted not keeping those--this is my second chance at super horniness! Best, triceratops
  19. Thanks guys!! I am SO psyched to be getting these! fini- You're certainly welcome to stop by if you're in the area. It will take me a while to get these set up though, and my remaining speakers will have to be sold off to make room. garymd- My wife is great, but this purchase stressed even her limits. I managed to demonstrate where I could raise the money and promise to reshuffle my priorities a bit--eventually she gave her support. She's going to really appreciate these once they are all set up. paulparrot- Yeah, for me this is kind of the culmination of several years of Klipsch tinkering. These will be keepers. lynnm- I'm just glad that guy in Kelowa didn't totally blow it with you! You would have blasted me out of the water with a $3.5K bid. I feel they were definitely worth it, but I just put in my absolute max and hoped for the best. Jim- If you would email the pix that would be fantastic. Thanks! jhawk97- I didn't think I had much chance of winning--I also thought they would go for more, and am really glad they didn't. Best regards, triceratops
  20. The last time I moved a pair of Klipschorns, I left them completely assembled including the side grills. This time I would like to split the cabinet and remove the grills to reduce any risk of damage. Can anyone describe what is involved in splitting the cabinet, or refer me to any previous thread that covered this topic. Thanks in advance! Still in shock, triceratops
  21. I just won the auction for the 1960 Khorns. I am shocked and very happy. Thanks to paulparrot who started the thread and everyone else on the Forum who encouraged me. Now I will have to sell everything else to pay for the Khorns, so I'll be posting info about that as soon as I figure out prices, etc. Thanks again to all you Khorn-o-philes! Best in horns, triceratops
  22. Greedy? Nah...hard to imagine anyone describing it that way. Ya just got good taste! If one pair of Klipsch heritage is cool, then more is even cooler... Best, triceratops
  23. frzninvt- Thanks for the interest in the Belles--they won't go up for sale unless I win the auction for the Khorns. If that happens, I'll have to sell just about everything! I'll get back to you with more info and pix of the Belles if I get lucky on the Khorns. dndphishin- You're absolutely right about "mint" not being expected or important for a speaker of this age. They are in good enough shape for me. I was just observing how casually most people use the word "mint" to describe items that are good to excellent condition. Mint is not what I'm looking for, but that is how they described these speakers, and they are not mint by any stretch. radiohead- The listening test was not a real listening test. The speakers are hooked up to a very marginal system which sounded very bassy and muddy. I think the loudness compensation was probably on. The speakers were standing way out in the room. I realized I would have a difficult time telling much about the sound under those circumstances, so I concentrated on learning about the history, originality, etc. of this pair and how the owner aquired them. paul cbc- Thanks for the PMs--I have responded and will keep you posted of any of my gear smaller than the Belles that goes up for sale. cybernalt- Absolutely drop-dead gorgeous! Best to all, triceratops
  24. paulparrot- Thanks for the encouragement. I remember there was a pair of Klipschorns like this on Ebay on the East Coast a few months ago and I actually started to think about what it would take to ship them. Here's pair that's just as cool in my backyard so why not? I've sold off my three pairs of Cornwalls (even though one pair is still waiting for shipping) and one pair of Heresys, so that totals up to the same amount of volume, right? I'll remember to try that explanation on my wife if I win the auction... Also appreciate your observation on the newsletter comment re midrange driver. I'll have to dig out my photocopies from Artto and have another read. The owner of these khorns insists there are no mods or repairs, but during 40 years we all forget a few things. One sad note--he had all the old paperwork up until a few months ago when he went on a binge with the paper shredder and it's all gone. Ouch! If I win this auction is there anyone in Oregon (sorry m00n, I realize it's a little late) or elsewhere intereested in a pair of 1977 Belles (all stock) with oiled walnut veneer and black grilles? The cabinets have some water rings on top from the first owner which I have not yet tried to clean up. Best in horns, triceratops
  25. Just a point of clarification. The designation Cornwall II was used to describe two different generations of Cornwall speakers. The first Cornwall II was A Cornwall with the horns oriented vertically, hence the pictographic "II" designation. These were available up until the early 1970's. The second Cornwall II (it should really be Cornwall 2) was made after 1985 and used front-loaded horns and a cabinet with a non-removable back. The second generation is what is described on the Belgian Audio site. I assume this is what you are looking for. They do come up here regularly and often are in excellent condition because they were very expensive speakers when new--so they were usually well cared for. They earlier ones are tougher to find in showroom condition. Best of luck in your search! Two horns are still better than one, Triceratops
