  1. For those who don't want to cut and paste and read let me ruin the surprise. He uses Manley tube monoblocks and a Hovland tube preamp in his home system.
  2. Speaking of Manley, what does that Rick Rubin guy know anyway. Uhh, maybe a thing or two about making a record: http://www.musicangle.com/feat.php?id=38
  3. Wha???...Manley,that, that, what is the word that has been tossed about? Oh yeah, Manley the "audiophool" gear maker also makes STUDIO gear? Yes. Yes, I believe they do.
  4. I kept waiting for another snappy Bill comeback, but it appears Amy put him in the penalty box. I like a lively forum, but I gotta be honest...I won't miss his "contributions."
  5. Very nice!!! What model? You may want to check the Vinyl Engine or Vintage Knob for maintenance / manual info. on your new purchase.
  6. Bill, why did you post to this thread in the first place? Back on track, for an interesting discussion of the early Thorens tables, especially the 124 and 125, see Dr. Stefano Pasani's article in Sound Practices Volume 17. Some fun facts: The original 124 was produced from 1957 - 65 and cost $99.95 with the MKII in production from 66 - 68. In 1969 the 125 debuted at $280 ($385 with an Ortofon arm) which was $100 more than the Empire 398, another cult fave.
  7. Ok, then. This IS a dance club system. Someone, in the shallow end of the gene pool, missed: When at home.............. Dahlquist DQ-10's Dynakit MKIII's Haffler DH-101 Nakamichi 1000 Thorens 166 MkII w/ Grado Prestige Silver Velodyne sub Honestly, Bill, what is your problem? It is pretty clear that Allan is referring to you use of the Technics which does not appear in your home system. It does, however, appear, to be in your DJ set-up per your profile. So it would seem that Allan made the correct assumption. No need to be so rude all of the time.
  8. Betty or Veronica? Or is that just too weird?
  9. No link available, yet. This is as close as it gets: http://www.stereophile.com/artdudleylistening/ Follow Bill's link and read issues #40, 41, and 61. The first two discuss the Thorens in detail.
  10. I'll retract what I wrote earlier, as it was Mike that brought up Technics in this thread. Not an attack of that brand, however.
  11. Classy, though, with the "adult" comment.
  12. In another thread, I tried to point out that the Technics 1200 was a good alternative for those seeking a turntable. What one person referred to as the "124 mafia" responded as if the sky was falling. I thought it was a little humorous. I seem to be the only person on this forum with any experience with both the 1200 and 124. Those with only 124 experience seemed the most threatened and most vocal. Typical. In this thread, I made no mention of Technic 1200 turntables. You did. If you wish to discuss 1200 turntable like an adult, please start a new thread. Well here we are, way off topic. What are you talking about. Find in this thread where I mentioned the 1200. Please. Do you see it? No? That is because it does not exist.
  13. Once again, you just don't get it. Nobody is bashing the 124. Also, your post was the first to mention Technics and the ignorance of others, so I think that it is not I that isn't getting it.
  14. I was. Jeez, Bill, we know you don't care for the Thorens, but do you have to make it your mission to poopoo the table? Get a grip. It's not that I don't care for Thorens, hell I have had 2 124's and have a 166. I just get a kick out of the folks who have never owned a Technics, yet put it down with condescending remarks that only illustrate their ignorance. How you chose to "interpret" my response is truly enlightening. "Get a grip"? I'm awfully glad you are enlightened, Bill, but you are one of the rudest members in the joint. I didn't realize I was making a jump with my conclusions, given your prior posts about the Thorens. Also, the tone of your posts in this thread with respect to the 124 were, I thought, fairly obvious. Internet being what it is, however, sometimes I can make the wrong call. Whatever the case may be, your response is out of line. If I misinterpreted you, wouldn't it be more helpful to point that out and explain what you meant by your original posts? I mean, unless it was your intention to just be a jerk and add nothing constructive...
  15. Bill, what is your complaint with the Thorens 124 anyway? I know you had a pair. What did you find wrong with them? I'm curious as I've never really heard anyone complain about the 124 before.
  16. Michael, I've never seen the 125 in person, but I believe they are totally different animals.
  17. I was. Jeez, Bill, we know you don't care for the Thorens, but do you have to make it your mission to poopoo the table? Like the Garrard 301, the costs to manufacture these older idler tables would be far too high. The rumor going 'round at the time of the Garrard craziness off of the 6moons restoration site was that it would be on the order of a million in start up costs to engineer and manufacture these from scratch. Again, THAT is rumor, but if you compare the actual mechanical workings of the Garrard or Thorens to a Rega it is like comparing a fine swiss watch to a sundial.
  18. Very cool. I know I must be getting old, because it took me a few days to appreciate this fact...that tape is over FORTY years old!
  19. Mark - That does look nice. What is the wood - Walnut like the rest of your cases? Was the original Tercel tube rectified?
  20. Hell, actual music listening is overrated anyway. That just takes time away from reading and posting about music listening on the Klipsch forum.
  21. Gary - C'mon. With all that gear, Bill is one bad man. It's best to let this one alone. We'll just have to deal with our crappy idlers.
  22. Whoa...disappearing post. Looks like Amy turned the ahole filter on this morning.
  23. Coytee, When I am in England, I live about 4 miles north of Lewes (the county town of East Sussex) about 50 miles south of London. However at the moment, I am at our other house in the South of France, where I spend about 6 months of the year. www.tourisme-tourtour.com/indexa.php3 I retired from working in the City of London about 4 years ago, when I also realised a long term dream of owning a house in France. I had been looking for about 8 to 10 years, not found a house I liked and finally found my perfect house on the last day of a two week house hunting trip. Wilson Perfect house, indeed! Beautiful house and it looks like a beautiful location. Thanks for posting those pictures, Wilson.
